We are starting the thing! Yay!
Were Katapesh as bleak and barren as tales of its trackless plains and vast deserts suggest, there would be little opportunity for adventurous spirits to take up arms and seek fame amid such merciless wilds. As any Solku guardsman or Katapeshi trader can relate, such is not the case. Gnolls, rocs, and beasts of legend from the Brazen Peaks prey upon the unwitting residents of the central veldt, and in the cities stalk beings from ancient lore and countless strange lands. Katapesh is a land of mystery and menace, yet there is no end to the number of brave souls who rise to confront such dangers.
This will be part one of the Legacy of Fire using Pathfinder rules.
Please look at my profile for additional information.
Good luck!

Wow, that's a VERY generous stat spread. I was thinking about an Aasimar ranged Paladin before but it almost seems gross to ask for Aasimar with those starting stats. I might do it anyway though... :)
The other possibility I'm thinking of is a Sylph Sky Druid with wind domain.
I'll do a bit of research and get an app in. What is the deadline?
And thanks for picking this AP up as a GM!
Sixteenbiticon |
Wow, this looks great. Thanks again for running this, Lurch. I've got an idea for a dual wield inquisitor for this, although I'm not quite sure which diety I would choose. Or I might still go the ranger route. Hmm, so many choices.
Would you entertain the idea of a deserty/arabian nights thematic spin on the ninja? I think that might be a very flavorful choice as well.
Sixteenbiticon |
Ugh, dual scimitars would be so fitting for this campaign, but I just can't deal with the massive penalties in an already less than optimal build (gotta say that generous ability spread helps though!) so I'm probably looking at a human inquisitor using dual shortswords. I'm not quite sure which deity I'll follow. Besmara, Nethys, and Sivanah have caught my eye.
Otherwise, if you approve my proposed spin on ninja (posted above) I'd likely look into building a gnomish ninja who is a follower of Sivanah. That sounds very interesting indeed.
Thirdly, I might just build a nice standard archery ranger. Obviously, I'm still torn.
To echo other sentiments: How many characters are you looking to recruit? What is the starting wealth? And what is the recruitment deadline?

Good morning everyone! I am excited to see the activity here! Let me get to those questions:
Wow, that's a VERY generous stat spread. I was thinking about an Aasimar ranged Paladin before but it almost seems gross to ask for Aasimar with those starting stats. ... What is the deadline?
Sylph or Aasimar are both allowed. Those stats are lower than I typically assign for my F2F games. I have always felt like the heroes of the story should be truly heroic from the start.
Deadline. I knew I forgot something. Recruitment will be open until Friday, Feb 12. I will make my decisions over that weekend and we should be getting started by the following Monday.
Would you entertain the idea of a deserty/arabian nights thematic spin on the ninja? I think that might be a very flavorful choice as well.
A 'deserty/Arabian', dare I say, Keleshite spin? :) Yes a desert themed ninja would be very interesting.
Could make a mean throwing build with those stats.
Might look into it. However I game run the game before, so if the GM is uncomfortable with that I won't bother to submit.
I would be okay with running someone through the AP who has played/run it before .. provided you are able to maintain a very clear distinction between your personal knowledge and what your character knows and would do.
I do have a question that seems important to everyone as well. But, what will the starting gold amount be? Average of class, max amount by class, or a stand alone amount you have set GM?
GP will be average by class.
dot, are you allowing occult? (just wanting to make sure)
I do not have a ton of experience with occult yet. But I have no problem allowing it.
Do you plan on doing anything about the Finding Haleen trait? Backstory-wise it seems really fun to build around, but the bonus seems way to strong to me.
Yes, and thank you for bringing that up. Since LoF was written before there were alternate favored class traits, it seems that the main intent is for the player to get two of the favored class bonuses when they take a level in their favored class. As such, I will be modifying it so that at each level that a player takes in their favored class, they may choose two of the favored class bonuses available to them.
To echo other sentiments: How many characters are you looking to recruit?
I will be looking for no more than 6. A little bit about what I look for in a character:
I want to get the feeling that it is a character and not an optimized build with a justification story. Interest me in your character and it will go a long way to getting chosen.
Also. I try not to be a spelling/grammar nazi on these forums. Gods know I make some of those mistakes myself. But please put effort into spelling and writing well.

The problem with the Finding Halen trait was that it was too strong, not that it didn't work. You just made it stronger. It's far stronger than the other available traits.
How do you feel about summoner? I know some GMs hate it or restrict it to only the unchained version. I kinda want to build an arcane trickster too... Decisions, decisions...

I understood the motivation behind your question. But as written, it allows a player to choose to have all of the choices. A player already gets to choose one of the three options (HP, skill point, or other) with a level in a favored class. With the trait as it is written, it allows a character to take all three options with each level. As I have revised it, it allows only one additional choice with each favored class level. This keeps it in line with the flavor of the trait as well as toning it down to a more reasonable power level.

I try to err on the side of stupid when playing something I have played before. I basically made very little in the way of suggestions, thus I merely role play and kill things.

I think I'll be moving forward with the gnome ninja idea. My idea is that he was resupplying in Tiven's Reed before heading south to brave the Trackless Storm when his caravan was raided by slavers. Mistaking him for a halfling they took him to Katapesh to sell. Through some sort of event he escapes/is freed and falls in the with the Order of the Blistered Beetle a sect of ninja and worshipers of the goddess Sivanah.
I think the Missionary trait (if you'll approve using it to serve Silvanah) might be interesting for this character, but I can't ignore the flavor of Reclaiming Your Roots or Finding Haleen. I'll probably skip the Earning Your Freedom trait as it is a bit plain for my tastes.
The Dread Pirate Hurley |
Sixteenbitcoin, desert fantasy ninja could work really well as hashashin. It would not be unlikely to find such a spy or ally attached to the caravan given the wealth of the owner and the political importance of the mission.
I'm considering throwing in for this myself, likely a genie-summoning conjuration wizard.

That is a great idea and I am, ah, stealing it. Hehehe.

@drbuzzard: Pushing the game forward constantly is a big part of pbp though, so it might make it harder on the rest of you stay passive. Of course either way might have it's disadvantage.
On the plus side, I rad the game maybe 5 or 6 years ago, so I don't really remember much beyond broad outlines. I could at least do some pushing to keep things moving. Of course who ends up doing that is usually the front liner or scout, so it depends on if I angle for that job.

MisterLurch, how do you feel about the vow of silence? Writing things down in order to communicate while out of combat, and maybe coordinating the use of sign language with another player (which possibly means tying together our backgrounds)? I know it will heavily impact things, but I thought the flavor could be interesting so I figured I'd get your take on it.

Contemplating a mounted halfling character, mostly Paladin with some sort of dip into Cavalier taken first. Worshipper of Sarenrae, wandering defender of the people type.
Question for thing I haven't found confirmation either way yet, not having used animal companions often before, would Cavalier+Paladin (if mount taken for divine bond) class levels stack to determine the animal companions levels and abilities?
Solomon Azar |
Doomed Hero here getting my submission in.
Solomon is a Warpriest of Sarenrae who's perfectly comfortable in the thick of melee, or at range. He's a well-rounded switch-hitter designed to be able to fit in well wherever a party needs.
His background and mechanics aren't quite finished yet, but I'll have them done sometime tomorrow night.

Details to follow:
- Captured as a slave as a child
- Worked in Salt mines till 15
- Killed 3 grown men in conflict at mines.
- Bought by Gladiator master
- Trained as a Gladiator...known as a "bad guy".
- Released by master after winning him much fame
- In Katapesh figuring out what to do with his life.
My first memory is of being woken up in the morning before the sun rises, and carrying rocks all day. When I was a child they were small rocks, then as I grew in strength they became big rocks. When I was big enough to reach the salt veins I was given a Pick, and a Maul and commanded to dig out the crystals, and break them up into smaller pieces...Other children then carried them away. Soon I became among the strongest of the miners...I could work all day.
Then one day a man came and told me that I belonged to him now. He took me to his estate, and there I was taught to use weapons, and defend myself. I took to it rapidly, as it was easier than the salt mines...till my first combat...I lost to a pair of halflings much to the delight of the crowd...That is the last time I lost. I fought many times, and praises and gifts were showered upon me, but I had no reason to fight, except for the profit of my master...It began to show in my fights...I didn't care anymore...I would do just enough to win. Finally Jaxoran, my master decided that I wasn't a good enough draw anymore...and here I am.

Did you miss my question about the summoner MisterLurch?
Sorry, thought I had answered it. I am okay with the summoner, but having never encountered one from either side of table, I will restrict synthesist. That is, unfortunately, simply because I have heard so many horror stories of the synthesist that broke the game and I do not have time to figure it out for myself while prepping this.
Knew I forgot to ask something. Which format would you rather we use for our character sheet? Myth-weavers?
To answer this question, I will refer to Doomed Hero's guide to PbP. Specifically the section that talks about the character sheet, aka character profile:
The Character Sheet:Your character sheet is your ambassador to the game. The GM will look at it when deciding to pick you, other characters will look at it throughout the game. Think of it like a resume. It’s nice if it looks good. It’s better if it’s clearly and concisely organized.Use spoilers to break up sections. Use bold to highlight important numbers. Site your source for everything. Use links to the SRD to cross-reference spells and abilities.
Look around at what other players do with their character sheets. Steal things you like.
In short, other than what is said here and on my profile (which I did ask everyone to read, btw), make it neat, easily understandable, and many bonus points for using url links.
Thinking of rekindling an old LoF character that I played on the Forums before the GM up and disappeared. Since Gnoll however is Not allowed, how do you feel about Human with Gnoll Heritage?
Can you provide a link to that one? It doesn't show up on the D20PFSRD. Thanks.
@MisterLurch, Would you consider using fractional base bonuses from Unchained for PCs that multiclass?
I am slightly torn on the topic. Mostly due to being burned in the past by having players take 1-3 level dips in many classes for optimization alone.
I guess I like the mechanic at face value, and I will allow it provided it does not get abused as described above.
I try to err on the side of stupid when playing something I have played before. I basically made very little in the way of suggestions, thus I merely role play and kill things.

I really am okay with you playing, DrBuzzard. And the gap since you last read the adventure will be helpful. (honestly there is nothing to prevent anyone from reading the adventure and playing with foreknowledge) I just wanted to make the statement of expectation up front.

The Vow of Silence will be an interesting facet to the AP. I am all for weird, interesting character things. I would allow a player to learn a type of sign language for the cost of two "languages". The Drow (TM), after all, have long had a special sign language. If you take the Vow of Silence, please put your writings and sign language bits into spoilers. :)

I was unable to find clarification either, so I will say that since they both specifically mimic the druid's animal companion, the levels would stack. However, all the drawbacks will also apply (i.e. wait 30 days to replace if mount dies, -1 during that time).

Excellent game choice! I'm not applying, but this is the perfect game if you want to play a Gnoll (if the GM would allow it as an exception to his rules). Note however, this can make things difficult for your PC and the GM since as a Gnoll pretty much everybody hates your kind, including most other Gnolls!
I personally have been playing in my GM's game for over a year (we only get together once a month) and have been playing a Gnoll Desert Druid of Seranrae with much success and enjoyment.
