Background:
To his wealthy parents, Alexander was the disappointing son. This was especially bad because he was the firstborn son. He tried, he honestly did, but at the end of the day, all he was really good for was studying this or that book of ancient lore. He never really seemed to do anything with the things he learned. While his sisters were busy establishing families of their own or getting into business, Alexander quietly withdrew from the world, venturing out only to buy more books or confer with noted scholars. It was fortunate that his parents were wealthy enough that this did not cause any undue strain on the family budget.
Timothy, the second son born to the wealthy Pierpoints, was not disappointing. From an early age, he was charming and energetic, constantly looking for some way to better himself or the family, for new friends -- or some new way to have fun or play pranks on people. He often exasperated his decades-older brother, but Alexander would always forgive him in the end; as incomprehensible as he found Timothy, he was his younger brother. He was family. And although he was not that comfortable with displays of affection, Alexander cared deeply for all his relatives.
When Timothy took to the adventuring life, his parents were concerned -- and found themselves completely unable to hold him back. They tried to prevail on their other children, but found them equally impotent to stop their brilliant, loveable youngest child from going out into the world and having mad adventures. Every time he came home with new stories and trophies of his travels, Mr. and Mrs. Pierpoint would try to persuade him to stay and do his duty as the family heir. Timothy would always laugh at the idea, saying the eldest son was the heir, and go tease Alexander that he needed to get to work on finding a wife. This pattern continued right up until the day that Mr. and Mrs. Pierpoint died, and their bodies were lowered into the earth.
Alexander was happy enough to let his sisters take over management of the house, but now he was the one to feel the sting of concern when Timothy announced his next adventure. Concern turned to outright worry when his younger brother declared he planned to follow a treasure map to some marvelous trove hidden in Katapesh. Timothy's promise that he would bring Alexander something to study did not assuage his worries -- but he did not know what to say or do to stop his little brother from going. And so nothing was said and nothing was done.
And instead of Timothy coming home with a tan and some odd piece of treasure, a sealed coffin and a letter came. A letter which told them in bald terms that Timothy had been found out in the desert, the remains of his Gnoll-savaged corpse somehow withered to a status approaching mummification, his eyes and tongue ripped out and unfound.
The interesting, wild son of the Pierpoint family was dead, leaving his middle-aged brother and their sisters behind.
Alexander's sisters found their sole remaining brother slowly, methodically packing up some belongings on the day after the coffin had been buried. He had set up paperwork to transfer all his rights to the House of Pierpoint to them in the event of his death, and he had booked passage to Katapesh. He was going to find out who was responsible for their brother's death, he told his sisters in a soft, deathly voice.
Alexander's sisters tried to dissuade him from going, but now that he was finally doing something, he was grim and implacable. Someone had killed his younger brother, whom he had loved in his own quiet way. Someone was going to pay, or else Alexander would at least die while trying to find out who or what was responsible.
Appearance
Alexander is a middle-aged man, his hair turned solid grey and tied back, his beard equally grey and cut close to his face. He has few wrinkles as of yet, but his skin is pale from spending too much time inside. He is thin but tall, which combined with his oldfashioned clothes makes him look like a rather dark stork or similar wading bird. He has developed a limp with the onset of middle age, and walks with a cane to counteract this. The fact that this cane is in fact his magical bond item and conceals a well-honed blade is a useful bonus.
