Normally yes, and they cost 100gp for whatever ungodly reason.

However, in my hands they will act as a masterwork throwing weapon as described under the Deadly Dealer feat. I'm not going to sell them but taking that trait will give me 54 masterwork throwing weapons at the beginning of the game, is that alright?

As a balance-safety-precaution, the deck consists of only 22 cards (number of major arcana in tarot) but buying new cards is possible and not too expensive or difficult.

This should fix the issue of "not too expensive starting items" while keeping your build possible. The build isn't too powerful, the trait is. And since the trait is crucial, the trait needed a little nerf. Sounds fair?

I'm willing to accept that. Another alternative is to have Harrow Born gift a full deck of normal cards rather than Harrow Cards, which count as normal weapons rather than masterwork weapons.
Didn't Card Caster's features give the cards +1 magical enchantment or something? If so, masterwork is pretty much necessary. 22 masterwork cards it is?

They can enchant an entire Harrow Deck as if it were ammunition, enchanting all 54 cards with one expenditure of Arcane Pool points. At 3rd level they also gain a slight benefit if they attack with a Harrow Card that matches their alignment. Those are the only two abilities that rely specifically on Harrow Cards.

Anyways, I'll take 22.

let me see if the dice are merciful today.

3d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 2) = 10
3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 6) = 12
3d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 1) = 7
3d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 1) = 8
3d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 2) = 7
3d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 2) = 8

Wow that's so phenomenally bad that I'm almost willing to roll with it. Almost.

15 point-buy it is.

Well, I must say that I'm quite interested! Let's see what my stats are.

3d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 1) = 6
3d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 1) = 6
3d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 6) = 11
3d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 3) = 10
3d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 4) = 13
3d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 3) = 7

.... Point buys are lovely, aren't they?

Welp I was interested in sorcerer to begin with and my stats pretty much delegated me into one :)

Since I put the stats in order, my Dex was originally 11. I added the +2 to it making it the 13 now.

GM MG wrote:

Mechanics seem to be alright. Green light on that part. A note: "urban environment" in this setting refers to any part of the Labyrinth that is mostly non-ruins. There'll be some of those areas, no worries.

Mask of the Lost may or may not be cursed, but that remains to be seen. Right now the curse or drawbacks (if any) aren't affecting the character. If you can incorporate the gift in your backstory: GREAT!

I see that Goromar is NE. Just make sure that he can work in a team and support even Good characters.

Goramar is NE, but he is very much an opportunist. He will utilize whatever means necessary to better his standing, if that means working with a team, as he has done before, he will do it.

Hey GM MG,

How long do you think recruitment will be up for this game?

This is Johnnycat with my submission. All information should be in the profile, any feedback/criticism is always welcome.

Stat Roll: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 4) = 14
Stat Roll: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 4) = 15
Stat Roll: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 4) = 6
Stat Roll: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 5) = 13
Stat Roll: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 4) = 12
Stat Roll: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 3) = 9

Oh wow, that 6 score is LOW!

Hmmm... what to play? A Monk would be pretty good, considering they don't rely on weapons. A Magus is also a possibility. Maybe a Slayer?

How common are undead enemies going to be? I know that in the Dark Souls series there's basically a constant flow of them, with only certain kinds of enemies like demons and constructs not being among their ranks.

Given the series love of constant surprise instant deaths, how are you planning on handling character deaths?

Mechanics seem to be fine, except that HeroLab decided to give you 150gp. Looking forward to backstory.

Whoa, I totally forgot your slayer had 11 Dex before racials! I admire your attitude and guts, but you know you can still change to 15-point buy, right?

Looking forward to Goramar's (I think I misspelled his name earlier, sorry!) backstory as well!

Volkner wrote:

I'd estimate that recruitment closes on Sunday (earlier if there are way too many characters submitted). After that's done, I'll take a short pause from Monday to Thursday (I have a business trip with limited internet access, no point starting the game before I can actually GM properly!). Game begins on Friday, 3rd of July.

All this is just an estimate though.

Kekkle Smoughbon wrote:

First of all, I love the scarecrow reflavor! I'd prefer the statistics to be in the standard stat block (copy-paste the format from others) but yours will do for now. Backstory is good, though it could use a reason for why this character wants to get out (for example, maybe Kekkle desperately wants to undo the misery in his/her/its hometown to get back home?) I have no problems with a CN character doing things in the name of Auorink.

CampinCarl9127 wrote:

Definitely common. About the same ratio of undead:other types as in most Pathfinder adventures (that is, relatively high).

Enemy creature type spoilers:
Most common enemy types are aberration, humanoid, magical beast, monstrous humanoid, evil outsider and undead. Animals, constructs, dragons, oozes and vermin are not as common, but a few may pop up at some point. There will be little to none fey and plants.

Dave Herman wrote:

No surprise instant deaths in Labyrinth Souls. There's always at least a Perception throw and/or a saving throw involved at some point. Stupidity and recklessness, on the other hand, may result in quicker deaths than simply activating a trap or something.

As for how character death is handled, refer to OP's "New Mechanics" section: one optional respawn and after that, a new character or Game Over for you.

There may be items that allow more respawns, but those items have their own limits.

I know, I like keeping to the original plan. It gives the character more flavor IMO. I find that with point buy it's much easier to fall into the trap of minmaxing. I will get the backstory up today.

Alright, my character is more or less done now. Really ran with the Undead theme present in Dark Souls, and made an Undead Bloodline Bloodrager as a result. I plan for her to be a Primalist/Spelleater, though of course this can change if the archetypes are not allowed. I will be putting up her backstory at a later time.

Traits: Deathtouched, Inured to Death
Skills: Acrobatics +5, Intimidate +7, Perception +3, Spellcraft +4
Languages: Common, Orc
Other Gear: Mirror Shard
--------------------
Special Abilities
--------------------
Bloodrage: At 1st level, a bloodrager can bloodrage for a number of rounds per day equal to 4 + his Constitution modifier. At each level after 1st, he can bloodrage for 2 additional rounds per day. Temporary increases to Constitution (such as those gained from bloodraging or spells like bear's endurance) don't increase the total number of rounds that a bloodrager can bloodrage per day. The total number of rounds of bloodrage per day is renewed after resting for 8 hours, although these hours need not be consecutive.

A bloodrager can enter a bloodrage as a free action. While in a bloodrage, a bloodrager gains a +4 morale bonus to his Strength and Constitution, as well as a +2 morale bonus on Will saves. In addition, he takes a –2 penalty to Armor Class. The increase to Constitution grants the bloodrager 2 hit points per Hit Die, but these disappear when the bloodrage ends and are not lost first like temporary hit points. While bloodraging, a bloodrager cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except Acrobatics, Fly, Intimidate, and Ride) or any ability that requires patience or concentration.

A bloodrager can end his bloodrage as a free action. When the bloodrage ends, he's fatigued for a number of rounds equal to twice the number of rounds spent in the bloodrage. A bloodrager cannot enter a new bloodrage while fatigued or exhausted, but can otherwise enter bloodrage multiple times during a single encounter or combat. If a bloodrager falls unconscious, his bloodrage immediately ends, placing him in peril of death.

Bloodrage counts as the barbarian's rage class feature for the purpose of feat prerequisites, feat abilities, magic item abilities, and spell effects.

Fast Movement: A bloodrager's land speed is faster than is normal for his race by 10 feet. This benefit applies only when he is wearing no armor, light armor, or medium armor, and not carrying a heavy load. Apply this bonus before modifying the bloodrager's speed due to any armor worn or load carried. This bonus stacks with any other bonuses to the bloodrager's land speed.

Frightful Charger: At 1st level, when you hit a creature with a charge attack, that creature becomes shaken for a number of rounds equal to 1/2 your bloodrager level (minimum 1). This effect does not cause an existing shaken or frightened condition (from this ability or another source) to turn into frightened or panicked. This is a mind-affecting fear effect.

Favored Class Bonus: +1 Bloodrage Round/Day

Intimidating: Half-orcs receive a +2 racial bonus on Intimidate checks due to their fearsome nature.

Orc Ferocity: Once per day, when a half-orc is brought below 0 hit points but not killed, he can fight on for 1 more round as if disabled. At the end of his next turn, unless brought to above 0 hit points, he immediately falls unconscious and begins dying.

Orc Blood: Half-orcs count as both humans and orcs for any effect related to race.

Deathtouched: You gain either a +1 trait bonus on Fortitude saving throws or a +2 trait bonus on saving throws against mind-affecting effects (your choice).

Inured to Death: You gain a +2 trait bonus on saving throws against death effects.

Sorry, but Primalist is not OK. I don't often say no to more martial class options, but Primalist is just a failed concept if you ask me. No tradeoffs and allows some pretty powerful stuff.

I know Primalist is not a game-breaker and its good stuff won't come online until level 4, but this is just a matter of principle. I hope you understand.

Other than that though, Moritat looks fine mechanically. Spelleater is OK. Looking forward to her backstory.

Got my alias created. Need to finalize backstory stuff.

Like so many posting here, I love the Dark Souls games.

Grim, brutal setting for a grim, brutal game...sounds like rolling 3d6 in order is a great way to determine my character...

Str: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 5) = 17
Dex: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 2) = 12
Con: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 5) = 7
Int: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 3) = 13
Wis: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 3) = 10
Cha: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 2) = 9

That...is a very fragile front line combatant. Maybe a barbarian to help offset the lack of Con? I'll post a character later tonight.

This is my kind of game, played Demons Souls, DS I & II and now Bloodborne XD

If there is still a spot I would love to join.

It's perfectly OK. Moritat will still be perfectly functional without Primalist, so it's no big loss regardless.

-----------

I haven't decided the exact number of player slots yet. Right now I'm feeling like eight would be the magic number.

Right now, if you haven't yet submitted a character but are interested in joining, your best bets are to make a good character quickly. Displaying interest is nice (and believe me, seeing many people genuinely interested in the campaign feels good!), but if you really want to join, act quickly.

I have returned with my character completely done and ready for review. Say hello to Pahleg, also known as Lightning Pahleg (kind of like Iron Tarkus). All information is under his profile, including his deity.

Amazing work with the backstory! Oh, and mechanics seem to be fine. (For some reason the gear tab has mentions gp, not that I mind but just letting you know in case it's an oversight)

Thank you! Ah, yes that is an oversight. It has been fixed now.

I've so far been stuck with class choice. Can we use occult classes? With the dark souls-esque theme i'm thinking a pyrokineticist would be fun.

Threeshades wrote:

Sure, occult classes from the playtest can be used. Be sure to use any official playtest errata you find (not sure if any apply to the kineticist, but I do remember that one of psychic's disciplines changed quite dramatically).

(Sorry I forgot about occult classes when I wrote the section on allowed classes. If any of you who have already submitted a character with stats would want to change to an occult class, feel free.)

If that's the case I might consider swapping as well. I'll decide by the end of the day.

Dotting for interest will come up with a concept later

This is Volkner's Submission, Rilian Sol the Cursed Summoner.

I ended up with point buy and I bit the bullet and decided on the Labryinthika as my gift. A little light reading to pass the time.

And now for Moritat's Backstory. Here goes!

Backstory:
Before the Maze, there is only darkness for Moritat. She doesn't know who she really is, where she came from, anyone she knows, anything. All she has is her scythe, a shard of a mirror, and a sense of utter hatred for one name: Myzaraphiston Synderfell.

Unbeknownst to her, there is a reason for her lack of a memory. She once worked for a Synderfells, a noble family who dabbled in the art of diabolism. In particular, she was the sworn guard of the potential heir, a young man by the name of Tobias. Originally, it was nothing more than a professional relationship, one that stemmed from Moritat's desire to repay the family for taking her off of the streets, away from her solitary existence in the slums of the city they ruled. However, as time passed, the two slowly started to become closer to each other. Eventually, a relationship developed between them, which quickly escalated to a torrid affair.

Things persisted like this for quite some time, with both parties perfectly happy. However, one day, Tobias' sister discovered the affair between the Half-Orc and the noble. Disdainful of such an impure relationship, and more than a little insane, Myzaraphiston decided to help her brother break things off by having some of her daemons murder the girl. They were quite successful with their job, all but annhilating her on the spot. However, rather than truly die, Moritat has somehow wound up in a place known only as the Labyrinth, with most of her memories missing. Now she seeks a way to escape, to find out more about herself, and to kill Myzaraphiston.

Background

Spoiler:

I was a knight, once I think. I can see through my helm hard leather gloves on my hands, a sword by my side, shield in my back, and mail in my body.

Now I’m walking down a street of a beautiful a city… filled with crafters and gentle folk they smile at me… Do I know them?

I know this place, the beautiful blue roof tiles, and familiar smells, and sounds. Yet I can’t remember it, the name of this city. Wait, more importantly. Who am I, what is my name?

What? Where am I now, I feel it’s a familiar place again.
I see a fire place a small girld running around playing and I smile at her, a woman calling me, I can’t quite make what she says, but I get up… why? I do not know.
I’m at the table now eating with them, are they my… family? She is quite a lovely wife if I say so myself and my daughter… why can’t I see her face? Wait… what!?

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why am I scared, wait… why am I screaming?
What’s going on, what happened to my family?
Everything is on fire… the house half way collapsed. I see the same fire place, or what is left of it… I’m wearing my armor again, why? Everything around me is burning and collapsing.

What is that loud sound? Like a growl, but foreign… unnatural, it brings fear to my body, but why?
I hear it again but closer this time, I see other knights coming and the call my name, Kendall
Yes! That’s it! Kendall Lark… I shouldn’t be this excited over remembering my name, but it’s a start.

Now I’m looking at the gates with other men, I see fires from the other side, bestial growl and heavy steps. Screams, silence, growl and scream again, like macabre cycle of death.
We turn around to see a woman speak, I feel courage and valor where fear used to be, she screams loud and clear Astoras… Then a deafening creaking sound from my back pieces of the gate flying and a deafening growl to keep it company. I turn with sword in hand and my shield up!
But it’s all dark now….….? ………? …………………?

Did I die?? Yes? No? Then, why am I cold and uncomfortable…? I feel I’m about to throw up…
Argh… I think I’m going to… blergh!!

Am I dreaming still?? Where is this dark place? Am I in hell?

Hello, a quick update on my character.
I will be getting him done a bit later but for now, presenting Ushio Takei's Backstory.

Backstory:

Ushio has a family of two. His family consists of his mother and sister, Ritsu and Shiro. He had always been really close with his family, especially so since his mother fell ill with a mysterious disease. Ushio returned weekly from the city to ensure that his mother's condition wasn't worsening, paying the local priest to come every day to heal her. Though these daily healings worked to only recede the illness and could only help aleviate some of its symptoms.

Having to pay the priest to come everyday was tasking, and so Ushio turned to a life of crime. He mostly stole and sold items in the underground and only killed if his targets were just as or more malicious and vile than himself. However, one day, he recieved a letter from the local priest that was healing his mother, Ritsu. It said that his mother had stopped benefiting from his healings and most likely wouldn't make it past the fall. Even as he read the words, Ushio was on his way home. Soon after that day his mother had passed but not before passing on the illness to Shiro. Ushio, hadn't wanted Ritsu to die, and now even more so with Shiro. And so every morning he went on his way to the church, to pray from morning to night while the priest continued healing shiro, coming by every few hours to check up on her.

A month went by, and Ushio had barely eaten and barely slept; spending every waking hour devout in prayer. However, Shiro's condition continued to worsen. He could not understand what kind of God would allow his constant prayer to go unanswered; to allow his innocent sister to continue to die. And on the night the snowflakes had fell, autumn turning over for winter, Ushio in his weakened state cursed his god's name and left the church, a man no longer under Immortals. That night venturing home, the chill and cold seaped into his wasted muscles and collapsed him. Ushio lost consciousness... His last goal in life to return to his sister and make her well....

Ushio awakes in the Labyrinth...

Mechanics seem fine, except that you have your eidolon's hit points wrong. 1d10 + 1 = 6 , because the eidolon has no class and its HD comes from race. Also I'm pretty sure eidolons don't benefit from Augment Summoning (summoning the eidolon is not a summon spell, it's a ritual.)

The backstory is very interesting and I like the flavor of making a deal with the devil (literally in this case) in order to get powers. Bonus points for including the gift in the backstory!

Let me be honest here, I'm not a big fan of first person backstories. And definitely not a fan of multiple consecutive exclamations marks (they could be substituted with writing in 3rd person, like "AAAAH!" he screamed loudly).

From what I can tell, the backstory is that he was a family man whose house burned down, managed to survive the house fire but got defeated by something. Not a bad backstory, but it could have been better told in 3rd person, or at least not lose anything while being easier to read.

Also, work on your punctuation please. At some points I had trouble understanding what's happening because a comma or two were missing.

Waiting for this guy's stats.

Good backstory. Tragic and gives a motivation for wanting to get out of the Labyrinth. It could include something about Ushio's class and the gift he has. Neither of those were asked in the OP, I know, but I've noticed those really enhance the backstory.

Waiting for stats for this guy.

Sorry I should have asked if the Eidolon would be getting Max HP at 1st level too. I'll fix it and will be changing out Daze Monster for Rejuvenate Eidolon...he's got a few less HP now...

Augment Summoning works for the Summon Monster class ability since the less Maris is near me, the less likely I am to be dragged to hell. Fiendish Dire Rats are cool!

Also it kicks in for the eidolon should I ever reach level 4 and gain Summon Eidolon which is a 2nd Level Spell that allows for a quick summon of an Eidolon and would activate Augment Summon (downside is the Eidolon can be banished easier)

Ah, didn't realise you were planning that far ahead with your feats. But Maris won't benefit from AS for some time, so why don't you remove it from calculations in Maris's stats?

How does Maris have 15 AC? Shouldn't it be like:

AC: 13 (+1 Dex, +2 armor) (17 when mage armored); Touch 11; Flat-footed 12 (16 when mage armored)

I can remove it, I was just leaving it for future reference - not that it matters much.

AC is 15 [10 Base + 1 Dex +2 Natural Armor +2 Improved Natural Armor] ; 11 Touch ; 14 Flat Footed

Unless my understanding of the Improved Natural Armor evolution is wrong it adds an additional +2 to the base forms natural armor. (biped already has +2 bringing the total to +4)

Good backstory.

Your hit points are slightly off, forgot to add Constitution modifier. 1d12 + CON(-1) + Toughness(3) = 14. Other than that mechanics are fine.

Oh, and one more thing:

You might want to rewrite that once the game begins... but you'll see.

Oh right, base forms have natural armor. I was only looking at the chart that says 1st level +0 armor bonus. You are correct.

So has anyone read the backstory of the iconic Spiritualist Estra?

Her phantom is the spirit of a Knight by the name of Honaire. Am I the only one who can't help but think of a certain knight we all know?

Also here is gnome pyrokineticist Elyna, Threeshades's character I think the crunch part is mostly done. I just need traits. And then fluffyness. The avatar may be subject to change.

Backstory:
Goramar practically grew up on the streets, that is after he finally decided to leave his home. His mother Amyra constantly made sure Goramar was aware that society saw him with nothing more than disgust. For Goramar’s 5th birthday, she even went as far as to gift him a wooden mask that she would make him wear out in public. The mask was nothing special but she said it would help from people gawking at her because of the hideous child following her. Self-esteem is everything for a child, and Amyra did everything to constantly destroy what little Goramar had.

What Goramar did discover in all his time hidden behind the mask was his disdain for his own family. At the age of thirteen, the half-orc ran away from home and as imagined, his mother never bothered to look for him. Instead of discarding the mask along the way, Goramar keeps it by his side as a reminder of his past. It wasn’t long after leaving home that Goramar killed his first person, learning quickly not only the way of life on the streets, but that he had an uncanny knack for slaying people. Overtime, he continued to hone these skills: he got better at hiding in the shadows, learning how to use the buildings and alleyways to his advantage as getaway paths, and even the best ways to kill a person quickly and quietly. Despite his mother’s disdain for him, Goramar has been slowly building himself up, hoping to either one day impress her or take her life…whichever seems more fitting upon their next encounter.

The biggest problem facing Goramar now is he’s awoken in a dark room, with no recollection of the events that brought him here. One desire continues to push him forward, either acceptance of his accomplishments by his mother, or her death by his hands.

Did you use the FCB on hp or skill points? Your starting hit points are 1d8 + CON(4) + Toughness(3) + ???(1) = 18 and you have 2 + INT(0) = 2 skill ranks per level but you seem to have three skill ranks: one in Perception, another in in UMD and third in Stealth.

You could remove the whole "DR none; Immune none etc" because the default for those is none.

Shouldn't Kinetic Blade's attack roll be at -1 because of Strength penalty?

Damn you guys keep writing amazing backstories. I'm starting to feel pressure my own writing won't match up to my players'.

It's up to you whether you want to play as your 3d6 version or 15-pt buy version. I wouldn't even think of forcing you to play something you're not comfortable with. Though I must say that the 15-pt buy version would improve Goramar's chances of survival, that much is a given. That said, I take it you still want to use the original?

I'm willing to go with either. I don't want to be dead after the initial encounter or a liability, but would like to play the hardcore stats if possible

It's your call.

Here's my alias for Ulrich- I took an extra hp for the favored class bonus, which I had initially forgotten.

Good luck to all!

I used the FCB on HP. Stealth is just in the list of skills because of the +4 size bonus.

The kinetic blade is -1 STR +1 size, so total +0.
The DR and immunities are in there because I have stock statblock that i copy over when making new characters, i can remove them if they disturb you, but i tend to just leave them where they are in case i do get any of the abilities from somewhere, then i don't have to look up where i should put them.

I might have to take my character out, since I just got dropped with a big team project for my masters.

He was going to be a Human fighter, sword and board.

I will follow this game closely, now to pull my character application from another game. It always happens on the fun ones.

Wow, I am stupid for not realizing the size bonuses.

Go ahead and keep them if it's more trouble to remove and later add them than just keeping them there.

Well seeing as my characters wisdom sits at 4, I am just slightly smarter than a rock I get to have some fun being the oblivious one.

Nezruik Backstory:

I have never been the sharpest quill to be dipped in ink but for some reason people have always loved me. Wandering through life I am more often than not oblivious to everything aside from women and children. My charming good looks and charismatic presence has always been enough to woe most people into doing things my way. Throughout my life I have felt as if I was special, slowly over the years I have developed odd abilities that I use mostly as cheap parlor tricks. Winning over the affection of towns people by helping them with small tasks; illuminating the town on the darkest of nights and dispatching a few zombies from time to time.

Things sometimes have a tendency to not always go my way, a few days ago I was enjoying myself in a small village. This wonderful village was tucked away deep into the forest, one might say it was almost one with the forest. Like most villages in locations like these they had a slight rodent problem, I found an opportunity to help out and really seal the deal with the majors beautiful daughter. Deciding to show off and not taking into consideration the strangely powerful abilities I possessed, I decided to set a few rodents ablaze with a beautiful cone of fire. Needless to say things did not go over so well and once the fire spewed forth from my finger tips it was time to turn and run. The raging fire that consumed a large portion of the forest was absolutely astonishing to see from a distance, I then felt sorrow for all of those people. I decided that they must have made it out alive and well, laying my head down to rest up a bit I swiftly drifted away into blissful slumber.

My HP calculations are:

12 (HD) - 1 (CON) + 3 (Toughness) + 1 (Favored class) = 15
