L5R: The Spirit of Bushido (Inactive)

Game Master R0B0GEISHA

1 to 50 of 81 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

The year is 1137.

Four years ago, Rokugan faced the forces of the Lying Darkness at Volturnum. With the return of the Empire’s ancestors through Oblivion’s Gate, the Shadow was defeated, though at great cost. Many of these spirits chose to remain in the mortal realm, to help Rokugan recover from the grievous wounds dealt by the Empire’s enemies during the War Against the Darkness. Emperor Toturi I, himself a returned spirit, has made every effort to reintegrate the other spirits into the modern Empire. The major conflicts over the last decade have taken their toll, and Rokugan has been long in rebuilding. But the Empire’s foes have been biding their time as well, and the reign of Toturi is not as secure as most believe…

Konnichiwa! This is the recruitment for my new L5R campaign.

Theme:
This campaign should run the gamut of samurai settings, from courtly intrigue to open battle, but the core of the game will revolve around a central concept: bushido and the inherent contradictions of life in Rokugan. Expect situations where there seems like no good choice and prepare to face the benefits and repercussions for your actions.

Setting Considerations:
The first adventure will be set in Tsuma for the first Topaz Championship in a decade. I know, I know, I can hear the groans already: why must every L5R game begin with a Topaz Championship?

Fear not, friends. The conceit here is that instead of participants, each of you will be visiting Tsuma to assist and guide the young samurai of your Clan. You are their sensei, friend, or parental figure. It will be up to you to decide that when I release the list of contestants shortly.

Character Creation:
Players should follow the guidelines of the Core rulebook of Legend of the Five Rings 4th Edition in the creation of their characters, with a few caveats:

1. The Tamori Family and Shugenja School in the Dragon Section are named "Agasha" for purposes of this campaign. Additionally, while the Family bonus remains the same, the School bonus becomes Intelligence, and the School has an Affinity for Fire and a Deficiency for Water. They receive Sense, Commune, Summon, 3 Fire, 2 Earth, and 1 Air for their spells. All other mechanics of the School remain the same (Technique, Skills, Outfit, etc).

2. The Kitsune are not a Mantis Clan Family.

3. The Agasha family of the Phoenix have recently been renamed "Gennai."

4. All Spider clan schools and paths, the Kenku swordsman school, the Ikoma Lion's Shadow school, the Enlightened Madness Disadvantage, the Asako Henshin Basic School, the Shosuro Infiltrator Basic School, and the Shosuro Actor Basic School are not be allowed.

Sample Character:
This is what I expect in an L5R character. Obviously, you'll be starting at Rank 1, but I'm looking for similar attention to detail in backstory and personality. Feel free to use the format. :)

HISTORY

Mihime's Family

Mihime has memories of a time before she was seven years old, when her parents treated her no differently from her brothers.

Dim memories.

Once she was taken to the hall of ancestors and proved she could hear their voices, everything changed. Since then, there has not been a single thing asked of Mihime. No more chores, no more punishments when she was bad, no more admonitions to treat her brothers nicely. Instead, her childhood was a long chain of castles as she was taken around to every Kitsu family and made to show off her gift, while dozens of adults gave her things and told her how
much honor she brought them by her very presence. It didn't take long for her to believe them.

Mihime's brothers complained that she was spoiled, and privately, she'll concede that she probably was, but the ancestors speak and the Lion obey. That's just the way it works. The Fortunes know that.

Besides, her brothers didn't understand that it was not all rice-candy and silk kimonos. There were constant lessons, the entire lineage of the Kitsu family to memorize, creepy and arrogant dead people to speak to, and the constant knowledge and snide looks that said she still was not good enough. As a half-blood, her gift will
mostly serve to be passed on to the next generation, when her parents pick a suitable husband without consulting her.

Mihime's Rebellion

Mihime wasn't about tot stand for that. For a clan called the Lion, there sure are a lot of sheep in it. She met Kanimoto, a scrappy Mantis kid, the clan kept around for the prodigy duels, at her first Winter Court, and the pair made sure to always keep things interesting when the Matsu and Akodo got snotty. When a pack of Akodo ridiculed him about his lineage, Mihime faked the voice of his ancestors so he had the right to demand a duel. He did the rest, and
there was something terribly exciting about seeing the Akodo bleed, and know it was her thoughts that had caused it.

Mihime's teachers berated her afterward about the clan all standing together, but she could smell their cowardice and scapegoating ten ri away. It struck her as typical Lion: they bow and scrape before their ancestors, then turn and spit on their own children. Why would they expect this pattern to ever stop?

As she grew older, the command structure of the clan chafed constantly. Mihime was playing middle child between the Lion
clan and the forces of the universe. And frankly, between the way of the universe and the way of the Lion, the big kitty goes down.

Becoming a Magistrate

Mihime has escaped the trap of marriage...for now. And it wasn't easy. Pulling favors with a Dragon magistrate she had carefully arranged to coincidentally meet at Winter Court, she got her to convince her parents and lord to get her a position as a
magistrate.

Working under Kitsuki Fumiko.

Yeah.

The peasant.

But, though it's hard for Mihime to admit it out loud, she thinks the Dragon's presence has been good for her. Mihime has changed since she became a magistrate. For once, she found things more important than herself. She likes solving problems, she likes the gratitude of people whose lives she actually saved. It's great... and there's one less ancestor out there.

She can still hear the ancestors, but now, Mihime can find it in herself to ignore what they tell her, and once or twice, she's lied to them and thought it worked. She's getting praise for the job she did instead of the blood in her veins, she's had a chance to train with bushi, to fight bandits and travel all over the map.

Recruitment will last for a week. Depending on who applies, I might take everybody or have to cut a few out.

Sorry this took so long to get up. Had a crazy couple of days.

Dot! Thinking Matsu Bushi at tho stage :)

At some point, I'll post some information on each Great Clan and their contestants for the Topaz Championship.

HMM what now Ikoma Bushi, Doji Duelist or Shiba Bodyguard.
Well have to check 4th edition and the changes, I have the complete first edition still here.

STATE OF THE GREAT CLANS AND THEIR TOPAZ CONTESTANTS

Crab Clan:
No one could punish the Crab for their alliance with the Shadowlands during the Clan War any more than the Crab have already punished themselves, and woe to the fool who brings up the subject. The lands of the Crab were ravaged just as the rest of the empire was during the following period of anarchy, but as always, they have rebuilt themselves, renewing their focus on the defense of the Empire. Never again!

-----

Hida Takumi is the son of a Hida gunso and a Kaiu engineer. He has the typical Hida build, and even at sixteen, he towers over most Rokugani. His size belies a piercing intellect and it notorious for being a voracious leader. He has a broken nose that never healed straight from a training “incident”, and is trying valiantly to grow moustaches, giving him a slightly scruffy air. He gained some notoriety among his Clan by bringing back the head of an ogre at his gempukku, having led it into a trap. This early success, combined with his natural ability, has made him slightly more confident than is perhaps warranted.

Crane Clan:
While all of the clans are still recovering from the Clan War and the War Against Shadow, there are a number of issues that continue to trouble the Crane: The recent civil war, the Second Yasuki war, and the devastation caused by the Great Sea Spider have put the Crane in a bind physically, both in terms of production and population, and the fact that the Emperor does not have a Crane bride has hampered them socially. This is not to say that the clan is weak by any means (certainly no more than the others from the recent conflicts), but they are currently focusing on rebuilding the families, finalizing the repairs on their lands, and defending their eternal hold on the courts.

----

Doji Aroshi was a skilled duelist who died in a kharmic strike with a Lion general during the Clan War. His son, Arata, has a significant amount of talent with the blade, and bears a burden of expectation from his family as a result. However, Arata wishes to be a poet far more than a duelist. He is not afraid of combat, he simply enjoys writing more (and has a great deal of talent for it). The two different paths before him leave him torn: his soul yearns to hold a pen, but his honor demands he follow the dictates of his Clan. Arata is a handsome youth with white-dyed hair and a nearly
perpetual worried expression.

Dragon Clan:
Times are difficult for the Dragon clan. The recent conflicts (both internal and external) have cost the clan greatly in terms of population and strength, but they are slowly rebuilding. The defection of the entire Agasha family to the Phoenix was an especially painful blow, one which has not been forgiven, and even the more reclusive members of the Dragon clan have come out of seclusion to hunt the madman, Kokujin. The clan perseveres, though- Hitomi has ascended to the moon, and the clan is led by Togashi-Kami’s son, Hoshi, making this period of time the most active for the clan in memory.

-----

Mirumoto Ukira has been a noted prodigy of the Mirumoto dojo since he was a child. His undeniable talent with the sword is refreshing for the Dragon, who suffered immense losses during the War Against the Shadow. He is a serious young man who takes quiet pride in his ability but is concerned that he will not be able to live up to his sensei’s hopes. At 14, Ukira is one of the younger contestants, and he is not all that tall for his age, which makes his serious demeanor somewhat unsettling.

Lion Clan:
Recent events have turned the Lion clan upside down. While their numbers were cut short due the battles surrounding the Second Day of Thunder, the War Against Shadow, and Storms over Matsu Palace, Hitomi’s Naming of the Lying Darkness has replenished the Akodo family with returned ancestor spirits and ancient heroes. The clan struggles internally due to the returned spirits’ divided opinions on whom should be Emperor and whom should lead the clan, however.

-----

Matsu Sachiko is the first student trained by the Akodo after the return of their name. She is highly controlled, unlike many other Matsu samurai. She is very honorable, and like most Lion, has a great respect for tradition – her sensei is a returned spirit who instilled in her the values of Rokugan’s history. Sachiko is a tall young woman who wears her hair in a maiden’s foxtail. She is, unfortunately, plagued by minor mishaps, a fact she attributes to some form of kharmic balance she must address at some point in her life.

Mantis Clan:
The Mantis clan is strong and proud, reveling in their newfound status as a Great Clan, busy consolidating the great gains made from the previous few years. However without a war to fight, the Mantis are slowly losing focus, settling into traditional commercial patterns, where the minor clans are moving away from them, and the great clans view them with suspicion at best and outright contempt at worst. Rumors of war across the Great Sea are spreading from port to port, though…

-----

The daughter of a Mantis marine that fought alongside their founder on the Day of Thunder, Yoritomo Ayano has a proud heritage for a member of the newest Great Clan. She does have a fondness for the finer things in life (music, sake, games of chance), but usually manages to temper this with some restraint; unfortunately, her impulse control is somewhat lacking when it comes to finding a fight. She is a very athletic young woman, pretty in a tomboyish sort of way, and years on the sea have given her a very strident voice.

Phoenix Clan:
The Phoenix are in a difficult position. The recent conflicts and wars have left their population on the brink of destruction, and even with the absorption of the Agasha family and the shugenja brought into the fold by Shiba Tsukune and the late Naka Kuro, the clan is still short-handed. While the land can be healed quickly through magic, children only grow so fast. The clan has worked diligently with their allies, especially the Empress, to stave off the advances of both the Dragon and the Mantis in the last few years, fighting with words in place of steel.

-----

Isawa Ume has had a strong connection with the Void for all of her life, and this was recognized early. She was taken to be trained as an ishiken at a young age, and despite an accident while traveling that left her with a strong aversion for horses, she has become a valued member of the Phoenix as they continue to rebuild after the last decade of devastation. She has significant potential as a shugenja, but is currently a better scholar and is very aware of it. Ume is reserved and quiet, and prefers study or communion with the spirits to socializing. She does, however, have an almost worshipful attitude toward Toturi Kaede – the Empress is her personal heroine.

Scorpion Clan:
Having been restored by Toturi in 1132, the clan has moved to reclaim their rightful place in Rokugan with speed unmatched. Their population was ravaged by the wars and the Exile, but this only serves to further the other clans’ underestimation of the Scorpion forces. While they openly work to reclaim their positions in the courts, the clan is also busy rooting out any last remnants of the Lying Darkness that might be hidden throughout Rokugan.

------

The Scorpion Clan has a tradition of “secret gempukku”: having their young samurai go through the ceremony in private and then using the public event as a means of furthering other goals. Bayushi Shichiro has a mission to observe and report back on the guests and contendors of this tournament, a mission given to him because he is a very subtle and blends in well with the background. He is quite average in appearance, and seldom does anything to attract attention to himself. He knows his orders, and will obey them to the letter: the Scorpion did not send him to get blackmail (yet), just to identify prospects and try to gain allies at the event for future use. His mask is a plain black scarf, worn around the lower half of his face, though he does have a somewhat nicer one with embroidery for special occasions.

Unicorn Clan:
After the purge of the Kolat and the defeat of the Dark Moto, the Unicorn find themselves in a strong position within Rokugan. Unified under the Khan, respected by their friends and feared by their enemies, the clan works diligently to be accepted into the higher circles of power within the Empire without giving up their unique identity.

-----

Though many have recently returned to the Empire, not all Moto were born in the Burning Sands. Moto Katsu was born in Rokugan to parents who were both members of the White Guard that fought alongside Otaku Kamoko and Moto Gaheris to destroy the Dark Moto. His entire life has been spent in the Empire, giving him a somewhat better understanding of Rokugani culture than most Moto, but he is not above taking advantage of other samurai’s expectations. However, he is generally more comfortable in the wilderness than in social settings and tends to be something of a loner. Katsu is a dark, handsome young man of about average height, with a stocky build and the bowed legs of a practiced horseman.

Imperial Families:
The Imperial Families emerge from the chaos of the past two decades battered, but not broken. In little over twenty years, they were forced to endure the possession and death of the last Hantei, a new dynasty, the disappearance and madness of Toturi, and then Toturi's death and return. Now that the empire appears to be entering a new era of peace, they will try to resume their traditional roles.

-----

The sole ronin competitor, Kohuri managed to secure sponsorship from Seppun Nakao, the commander of the First Imperial Legion, due to his parentage. Kohuri’s parents were both ronin that fought for the Emperor during the Clan War, and distinguished themselves admirably. Kohuri himself wishes nothing more than to join the Imperial Legion, and has worked hard to get into the tournament as a means of achieving that goal. He is a little older than the other contestants, and spends a fair amount of effort on his personal appearance in order to avoid the “dirty ronin” stereotype. Tall and thin, he is not a good-looking young man, but he is dedicated to his goal of serving the Toturi dynasty, and that is obvious in all his actions.

Dotting. This was my first attempt at a L5R character thanks to Zen, but will most likely re-tool him.

Ooh fancy, okay, so I am currently building a Shiba Bushi. More of a scholarly warrior, probably will take the lost love disadvantage. Tinkering with a back story around the fact that he knows that he will never be famous, that he will be one of the thousands of samurai that will never be written about or be in songs, he thinks he's a pawn in whomever's plans or cannon fodder in whatever conflict might show up. Anything that is more abnormal (like being summoned to the Topaz Tournament as a sensei) would throw him for a loop.

OK, ready to present my character!

GM Furumaro, hope it's ok I have added a connection to the Lion clan contestant, happy to change if needed :)

Matsu Akuro:

NAME: Matsu Akuro
CLAN: Lion
SCHOOL: Matsu Berserker
RANK: 1
Age: 21 Sex: Female Height: 5'6"
Description: Akuro might be considered pretty were it not for the stark difference between her eyes, one bright gold and the other as pale and colorless as ice. She keeps her gaze off to the side much of the time, an affectation that has been mistaken in the past of lack of sincerity, but in truth it is her way of helping others keep their composure and not instinctively recoil from her troubling gaze. Her hair is dyed blonde and kept loosely swept back over her shoulders, shifting as the mane of her clan's namesake when she is in battle. Her black and gold kimono is simple but functional.

“On the battlefield, all actions are honorable”.
--Akodo's "Leadership"

HISTORY

Decades ago there lived a Kitsu Sodan-senzo, dutiful and respectful of her ancestors. When the time came for her to marry, she revealed the results of a divination, she was being guided to marry a Matsu warrior whom she had met at the last winter court. Though unusual, her citing the guidance of her ancestors that the union was blessed by Yomi to produce a powerful Soden-senzo was taken seriously, and the arrangements were made.

Though the couple were happy enough, at the birth of their first and only child, finally the truth was revealed. There was no guidance, no divination, no powerful sodan-senzo. The Kitsu had lied, the entire marriage arranged to allow her to marry the one she loved. Though swiftly covered up by her family, the realm of Yomi was not so forgiving. To punish her, they forever turned their backs on her and her line. As a mark of disfavor, one eye of her daughter was the bright gold of those descended from the Kitsu, but the other was pale and colorless as ice.

Though her mother committed seppuku to atone for her sin, life was difficult for Akuro, even though she herself had suffered no dishonor. As a Lion marked forever as being apart from her clanmates, she has been an outsider her entire life.

Devoting herself to the study of Akodo's Leadership and the practice of constantly improving herself, she is seldom found without a text in her hand. With few people to call friend, she has had plenty of time to perfect her skills.

Knowing from a young age that she would never marry, for no man would choose such a fate for his children, she has carried herself through life alone and was prepared to continue doing so until her honorable death in service to her clan, whenever that occurred.

Whilst an exemplary bushi, Akuro has proven a problem for her superiors in that her very presence creates disharmony within the ranks of her fellow Lion bushi. Whilst she started out with the most honorable of intentions and impeccable politeness, Akuro's attention to courtesy and propriety has somewhat suffered given the indifferent and even derogatory treatment she has received from other members of her clan. The Lion eventually decided to place her on the path to training as a scout, trying to leverage her ability to operate without fellow bushi, a role she took to with great fervor, proving a quick study in both the skills and mindset required for the role. Her clan have since used her skills for a variety of tasks and she has even managed to earn a modicum of respect for her achievements.

Akuro met Matsu Sachiko when the clan assigned her as a mentor to the young samurai-ko. Surprised to be entrusted with such a promising student, she soon realised that as well as teaching her skills, Sachiko was placed with her so she could associate with another samurai who had... 'spiritual issues' like herself. The two women have forged a friendship unlike any Akuro has experienced before, and she was only too pleased to serve her clan, and her friend, by attending the Topaz Championship in support of Sachiko.

PERSONALITY

Akuro is calm, collected and in control of herself at all times. In battle she fights like a woman possessed, with no hesitation or second guessing, simply executing technique after technique until either she or her enemy lies fallen. Her understanding of her nature and lack of hesitation extends to all things. She has only now just begun to explore the world outside herself, and make her first tentative connections to other people. She guards this tiny new hope like it is her last candle on the darkest of nights.

** spoiler omitted **...

On the contrary, I want each of you to have a relationship of some nature with the contestant from your clan, ie. sensei, parent, sibling, etc.

Apologies if that wasn't clear earlier.

Sounded cool 'til I read what you put down about my Crab clan. Siding with Oni? Nah, rather die of seppuku thanks. Honor is a thing.

Dot. This looks neat, think I might draw up a courtier or bushi. GM Furumaro, are looking to keep this strictly a Great Clans/Imperials thing, or are Minor Clans and ronin allowed? Also, is this core only, or can we use stuff from other rulebooks aside from what you've already prohibited? I'm cool either way, just want to know the options.

Gathrix: Furumaro didn't create that. The Crab allied with the Shadowlands during the Clan War. Kisada was a great warrior, but was swayed by a devious advisor. It happened, and the Clans have moved on. They don't speak of this horrible decision, as that violates the tenet of Courtesy in the code of bushido, and as Furumaro says, anyone who dares suggest that they might be allying with the Shadowlands again is in for a world of hurt by any Crab within earshot.

I can't tell if this is serious. You've heard about the Clan War, yes? It was kind of a big deal.

Minor Clan and Ronin characters are allowed, although neither would have good reasons to be present for the Topaz Championship. If you're set on making a character like that, we could work together to make it fit.

Dotting for interest.

I didn't answer all of this the first time around. This game is not Core only. Only the things that I've listed are restricted.

Good to know. I think I'll just play a Great Clan or Imperial courtier, then; it's just easier to link them to one of the existing contestants, and I've got a few concepts already brewing. We'll see what I can come up with.

I somehow do not feel right building anything but a lion clan character. GM would you feel bad if you had three in your group?

Ikoma wrote:

I'd prefer submissions from a variety of clans, but I'll wind up taking the best characters. If that's three Lions, then so be it.

Are nontattooed monks allowed?

Kakita Tanawe humbly asks for permission to represent his clan at the Topaz Tournament.
Backstory during the day.

Minor clans? Specifically Falcon and Badger.. how are they in your world atm?

Okay so the Phoenix kind of turned into a Scorpion... But I've always wanted to play L5R and my two favorite clans are the Scorpion and Phoenix.

Bayushi Takeya

There will be a link in his description soon linking to a myth-weaver's page, but most of the information including background are there.

I didn't mean to imply that you wrote that about the Crab Clan sorry, but I did not know what the clan war was until I googled it. Broke my heart, don't know why they did that to them they already had a spider clan for those kind of shenanigans.

Nohwear wrote:

I'm going to say no. Ultimately, this is a game about samurai and the choices they have to make.

Working on a PC. I was willing to play a Lion, but I see an Akodo and a Matsu already here, so I thought about that, tell me what you think:

What if another clan, not as close to bushido ways, wanted his pupil to succeed so they exchanged favours in turn of a Lion bushi to be their assistant at the tournament?

If you like the idea, then tell me which clan would you like to be inclined to such business (if not, I was thinking Crab).

Actually, Gathrix, at the time, there was no Spider Clan. They're a relatively recent storyline development. Hell, there wasn't even a City of the Lost.

Anyway, that was at the beginning of the game, and as a result it suffers from Early Installment Weirdness in several places. It was never retconned away or anything, but the Crab did triumph over this dark point. His son, Yakamo, ended up taking the place of Amaterasu as the Sun, and his daughter, O-Ushi, ended up becoming a very competent Clan Champion.

Silver Crusade

Every main character basically went on to be legend... 2 gods

Hidas Amoro, Kisada, Yakomo, O-Ushi, Sukune all are reknowned

Kuni Yori as well.

Working on a Crab PC, just letting you know since I'll only be able to finish it Sunday/Monday... Since the DM is trying to avoid duplicating the clans, I thought it would be nice to express my interest before lots of Crab players shows up!

I am considering a Crane scout. I can not remember the name right now. I really like the idea that the clan that is the most about honor and ritual would train those who could be viewed as ninjas.

I will put forward a Kitsune Bushi.

I'm running first through the GM.

I plan on using Forest Killers as my Rank 1 Technique, then the alternate Path of Kitsune Ranger. My problem is if we play beyond IR 2 what Techniques can my bushi learn? I suppose I can just pick from the ronin path, but will choose a "path" of ronin techniques and you can tell me if they are ok, some I can reflavor, as I imagine the Kitsune Bushi as tough forest fighters, that are good in combat, tracking/hunting, and ambushes.

I can use the last 3 ranks of the generic ronin school.

Except rank 5 won't work with the forest killer technique.

Which book is the Kitsune bushi in?

Actually, Gathrix, at the time, there was no Spider Clan. They're a relatively recent storyline development. Hell, there wasn't even a City of the Lost.

Anyway, that was at the beginning of the game, and as a result it suffers from Early Installment Weirdness in several places. It was never retconned away or anything, but the Crab did triumph over this dark point. His son, Yakamo, ended up taking the place of Amaterasu as the Sun, and his daughter, O-Ushi, ended up becoming a very competent Clan Champion.

Oh ok that's why I had not heard of it before. I only recently got into L5R (around 3rd edition) and I really liked the Crab, they reminded me of the borderlanders from Wheel of Time fighting off the darkness.I bought the graphic novel Death in Koten and it was one of my favorites.

Sorry.
I guess you not saying 'no' means you're ok with the idea?

Every clan, at one time birthed a major oni.

The Crab with oni no Yakamo, the Phoenix with oni no Akuma and so on and on who were the epitome of the clans darkest side. The only major exception was the lion, as their oni, oni no Okura, became so infused by bushido that she was redeemed.
Alderac had always an open ear to their gamers and I remember times when one shadowland card in your deck tainted it and it became more important to have a pure deck than to win tournaments. I just remember weeping tears of happiness when I got my first copy of that card in my hand.
The major reason for weirdness was also that the storyline was heavely influenced by tournaments world-wide.

Secrets of the Empire

Generic Ronin School = Bushi school for Clans with no Bushi school.

I was just trading the level 1 technique for the Forest Killers technique.

Nohwear, that's the Daidoji ninja Scout school you're after :p

I think, given the popularity of the Lion submissions and that everyone proposed thus far is a bushi, I will withdraw Matsu Akuro and submit a Scorpion Shugenja instead. She can cover magic, plus some courtly stuff, plus some 'non high honor' stuff :)

Fluff and crunch later!

I present you Akodo Suana. Stats and background are on the alias' profile, and can be changed at will if they don't fit the game.

Ok! Pleased to present Shosuro Miyuki :)

Shosuro Miyuki:

NAME: Shosuro Miyuki
CLAN: Scorpion
SCHOOL: Soshi Shugenja
RANK: 1
Age: 20 Sex: Female Height: 5'0"
Description: Petite and demure, Miyuki has pale skin and long black hair, tied back in an elaborate braid. Her mask consists of an intrimcately woven metal chain, threaded through her hair and left to dangle, barely covering her face at all, the very slightest of rouge brushed across to accentuate her cheekbones. She wears a simple red kimono edged in concentric black circles, and holds a paper fan in one delicate hand, the other always at rest upon her hip. Surveying her environment with a slightly detached air, a slight smile and with the habit of holding a gaze for a moment too long, she ensures she is remembered whenever she meets someone new.

- Bayushi Tangen "Lies"

HISTORY

Raised in the bosom of the Shosuro family, trained by the Soshi and seasoned at the court of Kyuden Bayushi, Miyuki is everything a samurai-ko should be; attentive, polite, knowledgeable and engaging. Were it not for the vagaries of fate, she would have enjoyed a fulfilling role as a courtier for her clan. The fortunes had different plans however and Miyuki's gift to talk to the kami, alongside her own natural talent for intrigue, has caused her clan to thrust her in to the affairs of the Empire as quickly as possible.

Miyuki enjoys the challenge of fulfilling many different roles in service to her clan, but despite this she is keen to see more of the world outside of Scorpion lands. She finds the varied attitudes of the other clans almost intoxicating, not to mention how incomprehensibly strictly they adhere to the different tenets of bushido, and is eager to learn as much as she can whenever she sees the opportunity. Whilst completely loyal to her clan, she sees no harm in manipulating events to more suit her personally as long as it doesn't interfere with anything she's been asked to do. She also understands she's yet young, and there is much to learn.

Whilst a skilled spy in her own right, her current task is to assist Bayushi Shichiro by providing something of a smokescreen for him. The more eyes on her, the less attention he will receive and the easier his mission will become...

This is Nohwear. I am far from done, but it will be much easier for me to work on him this way.

I've almost decided between one of two courtiers. I'll post the final sheet later tonight.

A few things:

Jereru - Apologies, I missed your question. The situation you described happens, but it happens very rarely. Would you be with the Hida contesant?

The Warlord - Sounds good, but why would a Kitsune bushi be at the Topaz Championship with no Fox contestant? I look forward to your story.

Nohwear - It is Rokugani convention for the family name to be placed ahead of the personal name, so it should be Doji Takashi.

Bob Evil - Awesome. No courtier submissions so far.

Yeah, I guess "rarely" is what makes the difference between a PC and the rest ;)

I'm Jereru, btw, forgot to make it clear in my last post :P

I would be a kind of senpai to the Hida contestant, but can easily arrange it for other clan if you wish.

Okay, finished the character, put in the off-site character sheet. Here is Bayushi Takeya. Oh, this is haruhiko88 btw. Bayushi Bushi, there's some extra info on the off site character sheet that an ST could use as well.

HISTORY

A Future Bright as Gold

From an early age, Yoritomo Heizo was taught the power of money. Yes, his father told him, it was seen as distasteful for a samurai to dirty his hands with commerce, but it was a necessity. Money paid for wages, opened avenues of trade and political power, put food in bellies, afforded great luxuries, and insulated men from hardship. And when it was denied to even those who claimed to disdain it, did they not suffer for it just the same? Therefore, if commerce is a necessity, why should it not be made a strength? This was the way of the Mantis.

Young Heizo took these words to heart. Even before he trained as a courtier, he followed the merchant fleets of his clan across the Empire and beyond, even to the Ivory Kingdoms, and saw first hand the power of trade. "This," he said to himself, "will be how the Mantis shall rise to greatness." From then on it was as if a divine mandate had been revealed to the young Mantis, and he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the pursuit of wealth in the name of the Clan.

Day and night Heizo dedicated himself to mastering the art of making money, by means both fair and questionable, and it soon became clear that he that he seemed blessed by Daikoku himself. The Fortune of Wealth appeared to make everything he touched turn to gold, and on several notable occasions he got the better deal of gaijin traders, Yasuki merchants, and even the Daidoji Trading Council. Only his responsibilities at court pulled him away from business, and even there he was able to wield trade as a mallet, opening new political avenues where none had existed before. His star seemed to be on the rise.

Trouble at Home

Ever occupied by matters of court and his own commercial ambitions, Heizo reached age 22 without marrying, and Yoritomo tradition dictated that he consult the matchmaker. He consented, provided that his marriage was politically advantageous for the Mantis. So it was that he was formally introduced to Akodo Akemi.

In retrospect, it was the worst day of his life.

At first the match seemed harmonious. The marriage stood to improve relations with the Lion (slightly, anyway) and Akemi was attractive enough and obedient, although she didn't say much, which was fine by Heizo; he was never a very sentimental man and preferred to concentrate on court and the market. But bit by bit, trouble began. It was always small things; his meals would always include something he detested, his letters would be misplaced, a servant would be given an instruction contrary to one he just gave, and unattended items kept being misplaced far more often than they ever had before. Irritation after irritation began to wear on the courtier, and most nagging of all he was unsure why.

One night while away at court he happened to obtain a copy of Akodo's "Leadership". Although he was not a man of war, thumbing through it he found the tactics it described strangely familiar. Then it finally clicked: his wife had been adapting 1,000 years of Lion strategy to drive him insane. When he eventually confronted her about it, it led to their first shouting match: she found him little more than a repugnant merchant with no real concept of honor, and only consented with the marriage to obey the will of the Lion. It was a distasteful duty for her, nothing more. For his part, Heizo was far too proud and self-absorbed to understand why she would act this way, and blamed the matchmaker for failing in her duty.

Relations between the two of them went even further downhill from there. Although neither can afford make public their grievances due to the loss of face they would endure from their respective clans, the temperature noticeably drops several degrees whenever they're in the same room together. 18 years and two children later, the situation has yet to improve. Heizo now takes any opportunity he can to avoid returning to his household, and he nurses a sleight prejudice against the Lion Clan for bringing this woman into his life.

A Life of Resignation

With a troubled home life waiting for him whenever he returned to the Isles of Silk and Spice, Heizo sought any excuse he could get to remain abroad, even passing over choice assignments for more remote postings. Although he was still a beastly negotiator, the inner fire that had propelled him to early greatness had largely burned out, and he found himself more and more content to while away his time in gambling parlors and geisha houses that to travel where money was to be made.

Now nearing middle age, he's told himself that his time in the sun had passed, but deep down he knows that he'd just given up, and is disgusted with himself for it. Especially now, with the Mantis achieving Great Clan status and with more opportunities to put his skills to use than ever before, he remains idle, looking for something--anything--to rekindle his passion for service to his Clan.

Will try to tie him to the mantis or imperial npc.

Added a quote and corrected a small oversight. Picking an appropriate flavor text was harder than making the actual sheet. :\ Also added a paragraph at the end to tie him to Yoritomo Ayano; everything else is exactly the same.

Attending Tsuma for Topaz Championship, Heizo has been spending his downtime conversing with Yoritomo Ayano on her own leisure time, usually over a cup of sake and a game of dice. Currently he's been losing his shirt to her at Fortunes & Winds, a fact that both raises his esteem of his kinswoman in his eyes as well as annoys him to no end.

I'd like to submit Hida Shiori, a Hida Bushi. I intend her to be the elder sister of the Crab contestant (the responsible for his training incident).

I have only one doubt, regarding the contestant Hida Takumi. You mention he completed his gempukku by bringing the head of an ogre, but with his gempukku completed, would he be able to participate in the Topaz Championship? Is not the championship actually a special gempukku ceremony?

HISTORY

Two bodies, one Soul

Hida Reiko and Hida Shiori were born in Kyuden Hida, twin daughters of Hida Zaiho, a gunso, and Kaiu Hiriko, an engineer. The first children of the couple, the two girls were the joy of the family. Inseparable, the two girls used to act like one, even completing each other thoughts.
Daughters of the Crab and in the Hida family, the twins soon started to train in a dojo, destined to become a fearsome samurai as their father. In the dojo, the sisters became known as the “Pincers”, always fighting together and achieving incredible victories against their companions, fighting back to back and winning even against multiple opponents. Their sensei used to say that the twin sisters shared a soul, the separated bodies were just a way the kami chosen to empower and gift the Hida family.

Both beautiful and of high family, many families sought matchmakers to arrange a marry with the girls and even before the two had the chance to complete their gempukku, their marriage were already arranged, being this the first time the sisters did not thought and felt as one. Reiko was to marry Hida Yoshiro and Shiori was to merry Hida Yuto and even by pure unlucky Reiko was not able to marry the man she secretly loved, Hida Yuto, promised to her sister. The marriages were arranged to happen two weeks after the twins completed their gempukku.

The Pincers' fall

The day of their gempukku arrived and the twins were sent to the Shadowlands with the mission to bring the head of a powerful creature. Putting their training into use, the sisters tried to track an ogre, since no lesser creature would be enough for them. Their arrogance led them to miss the signs of a small goblin group, that easily ambushed them. Like in their dojo, the twins fought back to back, ultimately defeating the goblins, although at a terrible price: Reiko was wounded in her belly by a goblin sword and Shiori was killed.

Wounded, Reiko cried for her sister’s death, cursing the kami for choosing her to live instead of her sister: Shiori was the better warrior of the two, favored by their parents and would even marry Hida Yuto. At that time Reiko decided to defy the kami’s choice. She swapped their armors, tended her wounds and severed the heads of the five goblins that ambushed them. She then began to drag her sister'’ body back home, along with the multiple heads. They were finally one body and one soul, for Reiko abandoned her name in favor of her sister’s and took her sister’s identity.

The death of herself

Reiko’s funeral was especially sad and watching her own funeral completely changed Reiko’s (now Shiori) life. After she had recovered from her injuries, Shiori married Hida Yuto and even if they loved each other, her sister’s memory was always between them. To make her life even worse, her wound made her unable to bear a child, failing her family, her husband and her clan, for the most sacred and honorable duty of a woman of the Crab was to give birth to many children.

Unable to fulfill her duty as a mother, Shiori devoted herself to, at least, fulfill her duty as a samurai and in that role she found herself blessed by both the kami and her sister’s spirit, for only when she was fighting a damned creature from the Shadowlands she could feel whole once more. Her abandon in the fight was such that her father feared that she would soon become a berserker. To avoid this, he decided to send Shiori in diplomatic missions accompanying Yasuki Asaka in her own missions.

The unwilling diplomat

What at first was painful to her, to be away from the Wall and thus away from her purpose, soon turned into love, for Asaka reminded Shiori of her sister and their friendship soon became something more, even shadowing the love that Shiori thought she felt for her husband.

Shiori’s most recent diplomatic mission was not only to accompany Asaka, but also her younger brother, Hida Takumi, to the city of Tsuma, in the Crane lands, for he is the Crab contestant in the Topaz Championship.

After reading her background, is it ok to use the Haunted disadvantage with her sister spirit instead of that of an ancestral?

Also, are Kata allowed? If not, she will take the Large advantage instead.

Got some questions.

Whats the maximum Advantage points we can take.
Heritage tables being used?

I'm almost done with my Fox Bushi, just working the advantage/disadvantages before posting so want to make sure.

What would be a sacred weapon for the Fox Clan?
Cost 4 3k3 daisho?
