Sarkast |

I am at BoardGameGeek Con this week, so please bot me as needed. I will try to check in in the evenings, but no guarantees I'll be coherent enough to post. ;-)

Sarkast |

Just a tactical note for folks ... Sarkast would have mentioned this during downtime: At level 4, his archetype gives him sneak attack on charges, so whenever possible please leave him a charge lane to maximize his damage.

Dejik |

I recommend Sarkast take the Ring of Protection. He has the lowest AC of the front liners.
Nilus, Ayesha, or Irabeth could all benefit from the potion of barkskin.
It looks like everyone has equal or better armor to the +1 leather, so unless someone needs to reduce encumbrance, we can toss it in Dejik's haversack.
Some thoughts about the mongrel men:
I'd like to get our ranger friends better melee weapons than clubs. They have really high strength, so if they are willing, they could fire an opening volley and then switch to melee weapons when everyone closes.
Dejik is willing to loan out her cold iron longsword, since she's terrible in melee; she can carry one of their clubs as a backup weapon if things get desperate. (She could also use the adamantine morningstar, but it's kind of wasted in her hands.)
I think we should give them the three glaives, and maybe have those three just start fighting melee. It will clean up a lot of the "can't get a clear shot" problem, and if everyone threatening an enemy is at reach, I think it removes the "-4 into melee" penalty for the remaining archers.
I also just noticed that these guys have favored enemy, human. We can point them at the cultists while we concentrate on the demons.

Nilus Romani |

I think you are thinking WAAAAAY too much into it, we have owned encounters without the mongrelmen. Let them be, they don't need to be optimized.

Sarkast |

If no one objects, I will take the ring, since I'm front line combat with light armor.
I already have one potion of Barkskin. If anyone else wants this one, please feel free. Also, with Dejik's Life Link, I don't have a big need for the healing potions.
I think providing the mongrelmen with better backup weapons is a good idea, especially if no one else needs them. Even if OOC we think they aren't necessary, it makes sense IC at the very least. Same goes if they can make use of the chain shirts until we return to Defender's Heart.

Ronan Black |

I will be away starting Sunday, I'm only going to have my ipad with me and have not used it for posting here. GM you can run Ronan and Jinxx if you see that I haven't been posting. Back Saturday the 6th.

GM SpiderBeard |

Okay, annnd divide this stuff up as well! Last gigantic pile of loot before the game gets going again. When Nilus said earlier that loot is not a problem he was so not kidding.

Sarkast |

I have noted the new items on the tracking sheet; anyone who plans to carry any of it please note it (or mention here and I can note it). Anything not claimed will be assumed to go to Defender's Heart when we leave here.

Nilus Romani |

Come on guys, 1 post per day isn't asking much. GM, thanks for being consistent. We need to pick up the slack.

Sarkast |

I just wanted to check a something, in case it's me:
Nilus, you just made the statement "We are here to destroy the Wardstone, not search the Garrison!" ... I thought we were here to retake the garrison and recapture the wardstone. Did I miss something, or did Nilus misspeak?

GM SpiderBeard |

The primary goal is to destroy the wardstone; recapturing the garrison is certainly something you're expected to do on the way though. That said, this isn't an 'on the clock' mission. If you recall to the initial setup, it was expected you guys would make a few attempts at the garrison over several days.

Sarkast |

OK, I didn't remember that we were destroying the stone, I thought we wanted to capture it. Regardless, there isn't an inherent hurry, although Nilus may have his own reasons. :)

Sarkast |

Also, I'll admit I wasn't explicit, but it wasn't actually my intent to open any doors until the rest of the party was ready. I was just checking to see which of them was locked, and unlocking them. ;-) I'll make sure to specify in the future.

GM SpiderBeard |

That's fine. I err on the side of "do the thing" when it comes to shoving players into more content. PbP is slow enough as it is ;)

Nilus Romani |

Feel free to rush. Its the biggest reason that Nilus is pushing to move forward without all the extraneous combat/room searching. PbP is slow, no reason to prolong things

Sarkast |

Then maybe we have a philosophical difference here, Nilus ... I don't find it extraneous. Searching the rooms is in fact what Sarkast is for, so checking for traps and locks and searching for hidden treasures is part of my game.
I'm actually in no hurry specifically *because* it's PbP. We don't have to be done by a certain hour, so we can take time to roleplay conversations and discuss how we're searching the rooms methodically.
Now, if the GM knows that the next three rooms (for example) are all "safe", he can then narrate moving through all of them in one sweep to save time. I have no problem with that sort of thing to keep things moving. That's actually why I always Take 10 - no rolls needed, the GM knows exactly what I can and can't accomplish. :)

Nilus Romani |

Its not really philosophical its practicality. Combat slows us down alot in a PbP, especially when we have to wait 36-48 hours on people. When not in combat, I like the PbP format because it allows you to have an inner monologue and write out a cool story where you interact with others. However, I do not like spending weeks on one encounter or room. I'd rather spend a day or two and move on.
Specifically in this instance, Nilus is consumed with finding and destroying the Wardstone. Because like it was explained to us, the enemy is planning to use the Wardstone to trigger a magical apocalypse along the border. Nilus is sure that this will happen sooner rather than later. Also, we stormed the castle and had momentum going, we know where the Wardstone is located due to some questioning of prisoners so why detour and go away from the goal?

GM SpiderBeard |

I believe that Nilus and Sarkast's differing approaches to how to deal with the garrison are consistent and make sense in character, no need to metagame it. And I do apologise for forcing that fight; I'll give the group a bit more room to breathe.

Ayesha Jalal |

Ah, that explains it. I somehow skipped that post in an 11-post update. Well, that would have changed Ayesha's actions a bit. I am now in full agreement with Nilus. We charge upstairs and hope to find the wardstone there (after we clean the scrying basin :) )

GM SpiderBeard |

Have fun!
Speaking of which, merry Christmas and happy holidays and all that jazz. Hope you're all with loved ones and having a good time. No posts required for the next few days. That said I'm staying around home for Christmas and so will keep up with anything players want to post.

GM SpiderBeard |

The wardstone is in the big cage right beside Ayesha. I'm checking the party tracking sheet and post history; it doesn't look like anyone claimed it. I'll say Ayesha is carrying it since you brought it up ;)

Nilus Romani |

1d10 + 33 ⇒ (6) + 33 = 39 New HP
FCB +1HP so 40HP total
Skills 3
Diplomacy
Kn:Religion
Sense Motive
+1 BaB
+1 1st level spell 2 total
Divine Bond (Weapon)
Feat: TBD I'd like some ideas, not sure what I need to take.

Sarkast |

Rogue level 5:
7 hit points (average for d8, CON 12, Favored Class Bonus)
Sneak attack increases to 3d6
11 skill points (8 base, INT 14, human)
Acrobatics, Bluff, Climb, Disable Device, Escape Artist, Perception, Sense Motive (2), Sleight of Hand, Stealth, Survival
Feat: Dodge

Dejik |

Feat: TBD I'd like some ideas, not sure what I need to take.
What do you have?
Combat Reflexes combined with a reach weapon makes a nice tactics.

GM SpiderBeard |

Combat reflexes is a no-brainer for Nilus, same with cleave. Improved initiative is always good. Channel smite is situational but can pay off well. Or he could go for improved disarm/sunder/bullrush or what have you and stack that with adept champion which lets you channel the smite bonus into combat maneuvers.

Dejik |

Dejik takes Oracle level 3:
HP: 5+2+34= 41
Favored class bonus: +1 skill rank (total of 5)
Skill ranks added to Heal (+8) Knowledge Planes (+5), Knowledge Religion (+5), Spellcraft (+8) and Survival (+5)
Saves: +1 Fort (+10), +1 Ref (+8)
BAB: +1 (+4)
Feat: Selective Channeling (select out 4 targets)
Channeling: 2d6+1
Revelation:
I'm torn between Safe Cures (casting cure spells in combat doesn't provoke) and Spirit Boost (which makes any excess hit points you heal remain as temporary hit points for 1 round per level).
Question on Spirit Boost: the text says "Whenever your healing spells heal a target up to its maximum hit points, any excess points persist for 1 round per level as temporary hit points (up to a maximum number of temporary hit points equal to your oracle level)."
I assume this means that it won't apply to channel or lay on hands?
New 1st level spell:
Not sure what to pick here. Maybe Liberating Command?
I'm going to try to grab a wand of Remove Sickness. That should help against the Stinking Cloud.

Nilus Romani |

I spoke with GM Spiderbeard a while ago about it and I think I'll take
Your reverence for a deity is so great that daily prayer and
minor sacrifices grant you special boons.
Prerequisites: Knowledge (religion) 3 ranks, must
worship a deity.
Benefit: Each deity requires a different daily obedience, but
all obediences take no more than 1 hour per day to perform.
Once you’ve performed the obedience, you gain the benefit of
a special ability or resistance as indicated in the “Obedience”
entry for the god to whom you performed the obedience.
If you have at least 12 Hit Dice, you also gain the first boon
granted by your deity upon undertaking your obedience. If
you have at least 16 Hit Dice, you also gain the deity’s second
boon. If you have 20 Hit Dice or more, you also gain the
deity’s third boon. Unless a specific duration or number of
uses per day is listed, a boon’s effects are constant.
Certain prestige classes (see page 198) gain access to these
boons at lower levels as a benefit of their prestige class. If
you have no levels in one of these prestige classes, you gain
the boons marked as exalted boons. If you later take levels
in sentinel or evangelist, you lose access to the exalted boons
and gain access to the new boons appropriate to your class.
If you ever fail to perform a daily obedience, you lose
all access to the benefits and boons granted by this feat
until you next perform the obedience.
This is the Obedience in question
Obedience Paint a small picture, compose a short poem or song,
dance a scene from a ballet, or create another work of art,
whispering praise to Shelyn’s beauty and grace as you do so.
The art piece need be neither large nor complex, but heartfelt
and made to the best of your ability. Gift the piece of art to
a stranger and pay her a sincere compliment as you do so. If
there are no suitable individuals around to receive the gift,
leave it in an obvious place with a note praising Shelyn and
asking whoever finds it to take it with your warmest wishes.
Gain a +4 sacred bonus on Craft and Perform checks.
This is from the Inner Sea Gods book, and a prerequisite for the Sentinel prestige class.
@Dejik, I suggest Protection from Evil. A great spell that will still be great at level 20.

GM SpiderBeard |

Right, forgot about that conversation. I dig obediences.
Dejik - Spirit boost would only apply to oracle abilities since it specifies the caster level.

Oracle abilities or oracle spells? Her channel energy is an oracle ability, but I'm not sure it would count for Spirit Boost, because it isn't a spell.

Nilus Romani |

Well it does actually specify spells in the description.

GM SpiderBeard |

I'll say it doesn't - channel energy is "legally" distinct from a spell as a supernatural ability.
