Sorry for that brief absence. My Mother just bought a house here in WI, moving from CA and she needed us for emergency meetings to get things finalized, (house appraisal, inspection etc). I know it's been tough over the last bit, just bear with me, lots of upheaval (mostly good :D ) on this end. (also work blocked quite a bit of what I use to manage the game! grrrr...)

Hi all. I was told you are looking for another player. What exactly are you looking for? I see a lot of arcane (witch & sorceress), divine (shaman) and ranged (gunslinger).
It also appears that there is a fighter(unarmed) applying.
So, if you are interested in me joining (I have played with several of you and am in GM Shathira's WotR campaign), let me know what role you are looking for. I have started S&S several times, but it usually has died at about this point. Pretty sure I have a swashbuckler, a druid, and a few other characters which would likely fit in.

I agree, I'm glad you survived a tangle with a semi, those usually don't end very well if you aren't the semi.

After I leave for work on August 3rd until August 7th in the evening my posting will be limited to non-existent due to gencon indy. Whether I get anything posted after I get back on the 7th or not I don't know. Bot me as needed during that time.
If anyone will be going and wants to meet up let me know and we'll try and work something out.
Garavaen Drusus |
As a head's up -- I'll be out of town in a place where I'm not expecting to have any internet access from Friday, Sept 2 until Saturday the 10 (and will likely be unpacking and the like, such that Monday the 12th is probably the safest estimate of when I'll be able to catch up and post).
I'll still be here to play this week, but given the chaos of packing, I wanted to make sure I posted a warning of my absence while I can (though I will try to post a reminder before I go..)
While I'm gone, please feel free to bot Garavaen as needed -- generally, that just means shooting stuff, but he's not above dropping darkness and standing on its edge to give people shooting back a miss chance, out using faerie fire to illuminate targets. Also, if someone looks shaky on their feet, hrs more likely to use a deed to hit them, since he regains grit for knocking them down.
Bill Pater |
Bill, heal is trained-only, which is why I did not roll earlier. I probably should put some ranks into it next level though, since I have a decent WIS.
Heal can be used untrained. Not that I ever expect to roll high enough for it to really matter in most cases.
Astein Longblade |
I have profession sailor at +8. Wisdom, not so much. How are others with profession sailor and wisdom checks? We should be able to work together to have our highest roll take 10 as pilot and have aid-anothers to push it up into the mid to high 20's if possible.
Astein Longblade |
My suggestion would be we make Ri'el Helmsman/First Mate, Garavan Bosun, and Astein Captain and all typically work together in piloting the ship. Davina helps organize the crew and keep the right people on the right tasks.
The standard practice on sailing checks is Ri'el will take 10 for a 21 and the other three will all aid another. That usually should have us at 23, 25, or 27 for our checks. That doesn't include bonuses like Guidance and such we may eventually be able to apply.
Sound like a plan?
If Bill can pick up some sailing skill down the road, he can help aid another as well.
Davina Kurikami |
Since I also have darkvision I can take a part of the night watch as well.
Something else Davina can help with is ship's doctor. She can't really fulfill the role herself just now but as a medic/nurse she could.
Astein Longblade |
Any recomendations as to how we proceed? Should we be taking the ship as prize, looting, what? I'm embarrassed to admit that I really don't know what we're supposed to be doing as pirates.
Bill Pater |
So we could either just plunder for loot - which leaves potential future enemies in growing numbers.
Plunder and kill, which turns us all evil, and means once word gets out, every ship we come across becomes a fight to the death.
Become honest merchants.
Become pirate hunters instead, and track down known pirates and loot/kill them.
In any of those, I'm not sure taking over additional ships has any value, we don't have the crew to man them.
Garavaen Drusus |
Either we take the cargo and let them sail off or we take the ship as a prize.
If we're doing prize, we'd need to lock up and drop off the crew who don't want to join us .. or kill them.
Not sure I like #2 with a surrendered crew
Davina Kurikami |
Right now taking the ship is only really worth while if we sell it, the costs of crewing the ships gets very expensive very quick.
No that they've surrendered Davina will have no part of killing them, we won, they surrendered, the violence is done. I think the best idea is to loot the most valuable cargo and let them keep the rest and their ship since they surrendered. By doing this we can build a reputation that we'll deal fair with those who surrender and leave them enough goods to continue making trade runs. Then the next time we come across them they know we'll keep our word and not put up as much of a fight. Eventually the reputation will spread and we will get more loot for doing less fighting because they know we won't ruin or kill them if we don't need to.
Also, pirate hunters = bad idea due to where the campaign goes from here.
I did not realize how many good PCs we actually have in this group. I think Bill is the only one who isn't.
GM Shathira |
The issue becomes crewing both ships. If you take the ship, you'll need to crew it, squib it, and then either keep it, or sell it. Both sides of the battle received losses, and it's a behind the scenes thing that you gather enough people from the other ship to refill your ranks (unless you want to play it out). You started with just above the minimum amount of crew to run your own ship.
The other option would be berthing the ship somewhere until such a time as you can crew both ships, but then you have the issue of what to do with the captain, and her loyal crewmembers
Garavaen Drusus |
We just left, we can't head back to sell the hull so soon -- especially without having enough to work as a prize crew.
It's probably also not worth ransoming the officers -- we're not well-equipped to deal with prisoners over a long time and unless we see signs of nobility or strong connections, it's not really cost-effective.
Besides, a reputation for sparing crews will lead to people being more likely to surrender rather than fight to the death
Astein Longblade |
I say loot and release... We're trying to get our reputation out there and survivors help with that.
Eventually perhaps we can start to over-crew in hopes of landing prize ships... but we aren't there yet.
Davina Kurikami |
Just to point out, the only person she's treating is the captain who appears to be in pretty bad shape. The timing on the Nisha question can easily be while cargo is transfered. She won't shirk her duty in helping organize everything, she just doesn't have the strength to move a lot of stuff.
Garavaen Drusus |
As a head's up, I'm about to be out of town and without easy access to a computer for about 2 weeks -- basically, I'll be able to post Monday (13) and then not again 'til the 28th.
Feel free to bot Garavaen in the interim. Basically, he's somewhat stoic and likes to shoot bad things. Pretty straightforward.
