Quick question: if he falls now, will V fall into the vat of boiling alchemical ingredients?

No. In his current position, he'd only fall about 10 feet onto the ground.

Life still giving me a kicking at the moment. The mechanics in St. George, Utah, couldn't figure out the issue with our van. We're having Ron Burgundy (our van) towed to Las Vegas where there's a VW specialist.

We rented a car to get back to San Diego, which lost an under-car plate, causing us to get further waylaid, this time in the CA desert <cry/laugh emoji>. Hertz (don't rent a car from them!) was not helpful and presented us with one option (take a cab from a nearby town to Las Vegas to get another car) - the nearest town we broke down by didn't have a cab company that was willing to do this. We had a tow truck totally remove the plate, threw it in the back of the car, and continued on. Now we're fighting with Hertz about billing.

And now my spouse has Covid, so I'm currently on childcare duty while she quarantines and my work piles up (more). We've paid for this vacation, y'all!

Van still in Utah. Poor van! Yeah, R0B0, they are certainly unreliable. But I love Ron so much. He's got a pop-up tent, a trucker fridge, a sink and burner. He's a lot of fun, when he works.

Aduard, we were very lucky that Ron broke down in a decently-sized city. There's a lot of nothing in the American west. A little east of St. George is a stretch of land where there's nothing. Just miles upon miles, about 120 in total, of canyons, mountains, and mesas. No towns, little in teh way of people (though the highways are used). No internet, there's some vistas that you can rest/eat at that have outhouses - that's about it for infrastructure. Summers are 100F and winters are cold. It is stunningly beautiful but certainly not a place to break down!

@Aduard, is there like a ring road that runs the coast of entirety of Australia? That would be very cool to drive. From my understanding, going inland is where it gets very dicy? Plus, you have some bananas wildlife that we don't have to contend with. Just the occasional bear, cougar or snake out here on the west coast.

I have dramatically simplified matters. There are great roads that go Brisbane->Sydney->Canberra->Melbourne, and there is a good road that goes Melbourne->Adelaide. Adelaide->Perth has a road. Tasmania is an island, and Darwin is, well, Darwin.

I saw somewhere we are the most urbanised country on earth under some measure they were using; a huge proportion of our population lives on a strip along the east coast, and a much smaller proportion along the south coast.

To be honest most australian fauna is pretty safe. Not much is both agressive and dangerous. As an example, yes, a big red kangaroo can kill you, but essentially (from what I have heard) is a big dumb jumping moose that doesn't really think about where it is moving. Most snakes and spiders are more scared of you than you are of them. Treat them with some respect and you are fine - the big issue is them getting in where they shouldn't be and mutual surprise resulting in a bite. Funnelwebs are an exception - but they're localised to the Sydney area (so far). Crocodiles are an issue in certain areas, but those areas tend to be rivers and streams, rather than urban. Cassowaries are reportedly a problem, but have nearly been killed off. As ever, the most dangerous animal is homo sapiens.

We all get raised with this stuff, so everyone checks their boots for spiders, and wouldn't dream of reaching into a hole in the ground. Doing so is like diving into a murky pool without checking the depth.

The real issue is that most of the country is a very big, very inhospitable, sparsely populated place. If you're driving out in the northwest and your car breaks down and you haven't packed to spend multiple days walking you can die of dehydration or starvation before reaching help. Only thing that is going to kill you there is you and your lack of precautions.

That sounds like what you described - which makes sense, given it is really climate + geography + demographics that make it dangerous, rather than someone getting ambushed by a bear, whether black or drop.

PS anecdotally the MOST dangerous spider in Australia is the harmless huntsman. If you doing are 100kph and a spider the side of your hand crawls out of your visor (where it had been sheltering) and drops into your lap, your odds of a car accident skyrocket.

Aduard Bookman wrote:
and Darwin is, well, Darwin.

What does this mean? Merely that Darwin is far removed from the rest of the cities, or something else?

I had to look up funnelwebs, never heard of them before. Wild. We have black widows here, which I've thankfully never been bitten by - they love avocado trees and we find them in the ones in our backyard.

Here, it is black widows, mountain lions (which will attack you if they feel threatened - happens on occasion to early morning hikers and joggers in the more remote areas), and rattlesnakes, who sun themselves on concrete and get aggressive during mating season - a student on our campus stepped on one last summer; it thankfully didn't bite her. Stingrays are in our bay, so it behooves swimmers to shuffle their feet when getting in the water as they lay in the sand in the bay's calmer waters. And there's an occasional shark citing, though bites are very rare.

I think I'd like to see Australia's Northwest. I suspect it is more remote than the most remote stretches of the American West, which still have a decent amount of traffic on the main roads, even I-70, which is the highway I was referring to earlier.

the web page wrote:
It’s said to be one of the most desolate stretch of highway on the Interstate system. For more than 100 miles, from Green River to Salina, you won't find a single gas pump, soda machine or toilet. One hundred and six consecutive miles of no towns. Or exits for that matter. Once you start there’s no legal way to turn around. I-70 in Utah is one of the few roadways that doesn’t actually pass through any major cities. In the whole America’s interstate highway system there is no longer stretch of blacktop without services than the one between Green River on the east and Salina on the west right here in Utah.

This stretch of I-70 and east through the Colorado river gorge is one of the most stunning drives in the US - highly recommend to anyone if they ever get the chance.

Hmm. 2 things.
1. It's small. Half the population of the Northern Territory lives there, and it's the 17th biggest city in Australia. Canberra is a city state and has more population than the Northern Territory.
2. While there is a highway to Darwin, I believe most of it is one lane each way - so essentially a very long suburban road. Well, that's not true because it is built to handle very large, very fast trucks.

But yeah, WA is about 1 person per square km. The NT is a fifth that. If you ignore Darwin it comes out to about .1 person per square km.

I've been out to Alice Springs, and I caught the Ghan (tourist train) from Darwin to Melbourne. There's some amazing terrain out there.

Yeah, I feel bad for sharks - they get a bad rap from what I have heard.

I'm afraid I have completely lost track of whether Aduard had gotten a secretary, adventuring supplies, and the five notes from previous.
If not I think he has about 1Kgp, which should be enough to hire the Mongrelmen... I mean servants.
Probaby need to get something for them to sleep in, depeneding on what sort of housing they had here.
I am amused that we may end up as a fully catered adventuring party.

Aduard Bookman wrote:

Aduard had five notes;

notes wrote:

First a note for my driver, Drey. He was to wait outside the courtroom. When the dear ladies Garrow, Starle, and Flicht exited he was to give them a note and offer to conduct them back to my lodgings.

Second a note for the sisters. Here I explained my horror at what we had found, my fear that having been stirred up he may attack them, and an offer to take refuge with me until either an expedition had been sent to clear poor damned Herstag, or I had the capacity to do so myself.

Third a note for my valet Willem. A list of books I was interested in, and instructions to ask at various bookshops as to their availability and price. Most were innocuous enough, but the list also contained the Libris De Malificat - the infamous Book of Harms. If I were to prepare for war, I would do so with arguably the best treatise on the infliction of injury ever written.

Fourth a note for Willem to deliver to Kendra. Here I laid out - though carefully, lest it should fall into hostile hands - the events we had so recently endured. Additionally I asked if she could find information on the isle to which we must travel.

Finally a note I intended to deliver in person. A note to Adivion - for after the circus of a courtroom we must endure today. The note pointed out that it was unlikely that the vigilante crowd gathered to see an execution would be content were we to succeed and see Adam proved innocent. In such a case contingencies would be needed ready to ensure he could vanish to safety.

If all is gone well Willem and Drey should be waiting outside the courtroom with replies, and Aduard has a note to deliver to Adivion.

How is it looking?

For the record Aduard is not actually trying to get the doctor to use an incendiary flask on people. Not sure if the tone came through in text.

Aduard, you wily immortal wizard! That post made me chuckle three times.

Thank you sir!
While this game does run slowly sometimes, I love the characterisation everyone has - and the music really helps stay in theme I think :)

I did wonder if we could somehow pull in the circus folk nearby but I don't think it'll help, and might get them killed... HOWEVER I did wonder if we might impose on them to provide Adam with a new home. Thoughts?

If he survives the trial Adam will certainly need a new home. The circus seems like a place he could fit in at least.
