Organize a quarantine? Get infected people away from any non infected but that would be a tremendous undertaking. Maybe try to find a cure if we had an actual sample of the disease.

Sebastian looks out at the crowd of people. Individually he could see they are sick, fearful, and desperate. But collectively, they were an angry mob quickly approaching riot. "I'm more worried about keeping this crowd under control and staying healthy." Thinking back to the day before, he remembers how he and the others payed for Brienna's treatment. He was never very good with numbers, but it's plain to see that they don't have enough money to cure everyone in the crowd, even if the Abadarans could provide the healing.

Suddenly, he remembers the message from Vencarlo. "I hope master Orisini is well..."

"Yes, we should get over there soon. I don't think any of us expected things to be as bad as they are here. Do you think we should offer to help the guard to keep the crowd calm until Ayako and Lucien return?"

Inside the temple

We will be visiting a friend of Sebastion's after we leave here. I will tell them about the results of examining the box while we escort you to the Citadel. I will also discuss with them about perhaps exploring the ship that was sunk.

"These are all ideas that I will be discussing with the Field Marshall once you introduce me to her." replies Ishtani.

"That is very honorable of you Lucien and I will see to it that the coin is used for the sick as per your wishes."

"I don't mean to sound heartless but I'd prefer to avoid the crowd out front right now. There's a secret back door that we can use. We can circle around to gather the rest of your group before heading downtown."

Citadel Volshyenek
11:00 am – 4 Abadius 4709 AR
Weather: Sunny and Cold

You reunite outside and have plenty of time to discuss your thoughts with each other as you head down to the Citadel.

Reaching Citadel Volshyenek poses little problem, despite Ishani's fear to the contrary. Although many in the city attempt to conduct life as normal, stilted mumbling and quiet conversations replace the raucous chatter of any normal business day, as if noise might attract the plague's lethal notice.

The guards at the gate greet you warmly. "Welcome friends. The Queen's Physicians are in the courtyard meeting with the Field Marshall. If you wish to catch them, you better hurry."

You proceed forward unsure of exactly what the soldiers are referring to but you quickly find out.

The echoes of forcefully spoken but still just-missed words resound off the imposing granite and iron walls of Citadel Volshyenek's outer curtain. Dozens of red-and-silver-armored guards stand in assembly upon the pitted stone mustering ground here, mumbling in hushed, somber tones. Before them, atop a weathered wooden platform, paces Field Marshal Kroft, her eyebrows arched sternly as she momentarily tolerates the crowd's murmurs. Behind her upon the scaffold stand three grizzled veteran guardsmen at attention, as well as an ominous-looking group. These men wear cowled robes of oily-looking leather, supple gloves, and wide black hats. Some grip heavy canes, others dark satchels. Each of them, though, wears a dark-goggled mask tapering to a pointed beak. Among them stand two others. The first is a middle-aged gentleman in a simple black overcoat with streaks of white gracing the sides of his short dark hair. He watches the gathered guards with a soft, concerned expression, his hands tightly clasping a heavy-looking doctor's case. The second figure is an imposing one indeed—a woman dressed in full-plate armor, a longsword and shield at her side, and her blank-faced full helm sporting a bright red plume.

The Field Marshal's fierce tone cuts through the rumble of whispers. "You will escort Doctor Davaulus and his men in their royal duties wherever those might take them. Furthermore, you are to consider orders from any of the queen's new order of Gray Maidens to be as binding as any superior officer in the Korvosan Guard or Sable Company. You are guardsmen of Korvosa. You will not balk. These are dire times and your city needs these healers. Your city needs you. Your patrol leaders have your assignments. Dismissed!"

As the assembly ends, the guardsmen gathered in the courtyard break up into groups, many reporting for various duties while others loiter for a few moments to quietly gripe about their new orders. The armored woman, one of the queen's aforementioned Gray Maidens, quickly organizes the guards, silencing bickering words with harsh commands and assigning orders for the day. Kroft and her veteran attendants begin to head into the citadel with Dr. Davaulus and his Queen's Physicians. Before she enters the keep, the field marshal notices you and sends one of her aides to fetch you.

The leader of the Korvosan Guard is eager to see you but she seems guarded in her current, unfavorable company.

Sense Motive DC 10:
You can see that Davaulus's doctors unnerve her just as much as they do her men.

"Welcome. I'm glad you are here. This is Doctor Davaulus, the newly appointed Queen's Physician." introduced Cressida.

"The pleasure is all mine." the doctor greets you warmly. He is a calm man with a polite demeanor and deeply analytical mind. "This all must seem rather overwhelming. I welcome any questions you might have. I hope to ease the concerns of as many of Korvosa's people as possible in this trying time."

"The doctor and I were just about to confer to form a sensible plan. You are more than welcome to join us and I'd appreciate your thoughts." chimes in the Field Marshall.

The doctor rummages through his bag and pulls out a public announcement and hands it to you. "This is one of one of numerous such writs soon to be distributed throughout the city to convey the queen's initial expectations."

The writ reads:

Attention!

By Decree of Her Royal Majesty, the Radiant Queen Illeosa I, all citizens and members of the Korvosan Guard are to aid and admit the newly established Queen's Physicians in this time of urgency. These royal agents will extend healing to the sick and organize defense against the spreading affliction known as "blood veil." They are to be allowed access to any home or building they deem necessary in the course of their duties. All those suffering from disease or disorder are to submit themselves to the Physicians for treatment.

To aid in the duties of the Queen’s Physicians, know that the order of the Gray Maidens has been established to provide military support as needed. The Maidens answer directly to the Crimson Throne, and will be called upon as necessary to augment and strengthen the peace where simple city guards will not suffice.

Impeding or distracting the duties of the Queen's Physicians or the Gray Maidens is punishable by imprisonment. Impersonating one of the Queen's Physicians is punishable by death. Knowingly harboring or hiding the infected is punishable by death. Purposefully spreading blood veil is punishable by torture, then death.

The Queen's Physicians will be making rounds of every city district henceforth until Her Majesty deems this misfortune abated.

When they reach the Citadel, Sebastian is surprised to see the gathered crowd of guardsmen. The group assembled on the stage make for an imposing backdrop for Kroft's address. Well well, what have we here? The guards are recognizable enough, but the the beak-masked figures are new. His interest is piqued by the woman in full-plate. I do love a woman in armor...

After the crowd disperses, Sebastian reads over the writ as it's passed around. "Gray Maidens and Queen's Physicians, eh? The Queen's response to this plague has been very prompt." He nods his approval as he passes it along.

"Greetings Field Marshall, Doctor. I am Ishani Dhatri. I've come from the Grand Vault of Abadar to ask if I might be of service in coordinating the efforts of the church with those of the city." Ishani introduces himself.

"Well met, Ishani." replies Cressida. "Your participation is welcome. Please join us inside."

You, Field Marshall Cressida Croft, Cressida’s aides, Doctor Reiner Davaulus, a few Queen's Physicians, and Ishani Dhatri all head inside and proceed to a large meeting room. Ishani reads over the Queen's announcement as you walk. "Hmm. I'm surprised and cautiously optimistic about the queen's new plans. We have much to discuss."

The meeting is a lengthy affair wherein Kroft and her aides go over the reports and statistics of plague in the city, then confer about ways to contain and treat the victims. Talk of quarantining blocks of the city and limiting movement through districts is the only news of any real import that comes of the discussion.

At the end of the meeting, the doctor dismisses himself. "Well we all have a lot of work ahead of us. I must return to the Hospice of the Blessed Maiden to continue my work. I'll be completing my preparations to depart in the courtyard. If you need to speak with me further, I'll be there for the next few minutes."

"I must also department and report our plans to the Arch Banker." Ishani turns to the party. "I'm not sure if you are heading back up that way. If not, I'll ask the Field Marshall if she can spare a guard to escort me back."

"Don't be silly." says Dr. Davaulus. "The Field Marshall and her guards have enough work to do. I'll arrange for a Grey Maiden to accompany you."

"Well thank you, good doctor. I'll take you up on that. Good luck my friends. We'll be in touch." Ishani and the doctor head out to the courtyard.

After they leave, Cressida approaches you. "So what do you think? This whole situation stinks but protecting the people of Korvosa is my priority, even if it means working with these people. There's nothing I need from you right now but I'm sure I will soon."

I believe that there might be a connection between the plague and the ship that was sunk. Earlier, we treated a young girl for plague with the help of Brother Ishani and she told us she had found a box of silver coins on the shore and spent them at the North Point. Ishani told us that many cases have originated there so the coins have no doubt circulated and spread the illness.

Ayako sighs. Perhaps we should search the wreckage of the boat. We'll need magic to get down there and help us swim, plus stabbing weapons.

Cressida Croft dismisses her aides and speaks with you privately. "Doctor Davaulus suspected a connection as well and has quarantined the wreckage for public safety. My position does not allow me to support an expedition against the Queen's Physicians' orders. However, since you don't directly work under me, as long as you don't involve me further, I can turn a blind eye. Unfortunately, that means I cannot offer you any help besides wishing you luck. If you are able to find anything that would help the doctors create a cure, you'll be doing the city a great service. Finding the wreckage is not going to be easy though. The river is huge, the waters are muddy, and the currents are strong. The dimensions vary at different points but on average, the river is about 1000 feet wide and 100 feet deep. The ship was sunk north of North Bridge so that would be a good place to start. Just don't ask any Guards for assistance otherwise they risk incriminating themselves."

F Samsaran Witch (Cartomancer) Init +3, Per +0 HP 22/22, AC 12/12/10 (mage armor 16/12/14), Fort +2, Ref +3, Will +4

"It sounds like we might need magical assistance to find the wreck, let alone reach it. Field Marshall, is there anything else you can share about the situation now that we're alone? Certainly, our end goals appear to align with the Queen's, but I'm troubled by the means by which she hopes to achieve things. Do you know anything further about these doctors or the Grey Maidens? Have you heard of this Hospice of the Blessed Maiden before today?"

"Doctor Davaulus claims to have served Queen Ileosa's family in Egorian, the capital of Cheliax, for many years. He says she contacted him a few days ago, begging for his assistance on her city's behalf, he couldn't refuse. He arrived in Korvosa via magical transport and he's spent his time assembling a group of the city's most talented healers to help stem the tide of the spreading plague. These Queen's Physicians claim to either be a local with some knowledge of healing or a country doctor rushed in from Harse, Palin's Cove, or Veldraine as soon as word of the spreading disease reached them."

"The Queen's Physician's have set up their headquarters in an old Arkona imports warehouse on West Dock and have renamed it the Hospice of the Blessed Maiden. The physicians have opened the hospice to the public. It is intended to be a place where those suffering from disease, from any walk of Korvosan life, can come to find care under the Queen's Physicians."

"The Gray Maidens were recently created by Queen Ileosa to be a military group loyal to her. She has placed her bodyguard Sabina Merrin in command of this elite force. The group is composed solely of women and new recruits into the Gray Maidens are hand-selected from beautiful young fighters, most of whom are conscripted from the Sable Company, the Order of the Nail, and the Korvosan Guard."

"If you ask me, I'm wary of both of these new groups. These strange new doctors are unlike any healers I've ever seen before. And quite frankly, I'm offended that these outsiders have been given authority over the Guard. The different branches of the military were set up in Korvosa to keep the ruling power in check, but the Queen seems to be trying to wrestle as much power as she can for herself, upsetting this balance. But with the Seneshal still missing and no official word from the Castle on his disappearance, there really isn't anyone to oppose these power grabs. The people of Korvosa are not stupid, but they are most likely too distracted trying to avoid catching this blood veil to realize what is going on in politics right now."

Ayako listens to Croft's words about the wreckage.Rather difficult it seems, but if we pool our resources, we should be able to get down there. I wonder if we would be able to investigate the new physicians although it would be very upsetting to our new friend Lucian if we tried doing anything like sneaking in after dark.

Lucien follows the Whole meeting with interest, without losing the opportunity to chime in when needed. He does his best in order to ensure that all the parties collaborate. When the meeting comes to its end, though, he finds himself sharing the same worries of Cressida Kroft.

"This Whole affair stinks to me too, Field Marshal. But as you said, we must protect the city. Refusing the offer wouldn't have been good for anyone. But we'd best keep our eyes open."

Lucien falls into a pondering silence for a while as his companions talk further with Cressida, before chiming in once again.

"I don't have any problems with sneaking in after dark, Ayako. My only concern is my city's health. But if you ask my opinion about this matter, well, I think that we have plenty of alternatives. Sneaking in the wreck is not our only solution. We need to find it first. Then, and only then, we should start thinking about how to get inside."

For a few instants, Lucien falls back into his medidative silence, carefully considering their options. Suddenly his eyes widens as he's hit by an idea that could help them in finding the wreck. As he speaks, however, his idea grows more and more complex to him.

"Does anyone know if there's a way in this city to...borrow a flying mount? It would make our scouting operation much easier and quicker. Maybe the Sable Company would be willing to borrow us one of their griffins?"

That is possible, but can you ride a griffen? Or at least well enough not to fall off.

"That I think I can help with." smiles Cressida. "I'll send word over to the Great Tower in the Heights. Commandant Marcus Thalassinus and I are in good standing and he'll honor my request. Now this isn't a license to go free-wheeling above the city now. I expect you to be professional or I'll have the request revoked."

Great Tower - Knowledge (Local) DC 10:

Although the top of Castle Korvosa's Seawatch Tower soars above every other building in Varisia (thanks to the immense pyramid that serves as the castle's foundation), the Great Tower rivals some of the Thassilonian monuments as one of the tallest free-standing structures in the region. The tower stands 270 feet high, with a 100-foot-diameter footprint and a roof line diameter of 40 feet. It has 19 floors divided into a number of different uses, with an extensive Vault system beneath it. Only two known entrances exist into the tower: the main entrance that opens onto the tower's third floor (accessible by a gently arcing bridge) and the hippogriff openings of the top three floors. At its base, the tower's massive granite walls (faced with an inch of black marble with an intervening sheet of lead between) measure 12 feet thick and are reinforced with a skeleton of steel and black iron. As it rises, the tower's circular curtain wall narrows until it measures only a few inches thick. The internal metal skeleton, an innovation brought from distant Alkenstar, bears an increasing amount of the tower's structural load until around the 200-foot mark, at which point it bears all of the load.

Queen Domina commissioned the tower in 4684, but she did not survive to see its completion in 4688. Hoping to rival even the Thassilonians and seeking to steal some of the Acadamae's fame (the grand, new Hall of Summoning having just been completed the year before), Queen Domina nearly drained the city's coffers dry to build the tower. Indeed, the original Alkenstar architect and engineers (brought to Korvosa at incredible cost) designed the tower to rise almost 320 feet, but King Eodred II saw no reason to bankrupt the city over the last 50 feet.

The windowless bottom floor of the tower houses the Sable Company's main armory, which rumors claim holds dozens of magic weapons and suits of armor. A branch of the Endrin Military Academy fills floors two through six, with classrooms and advanced training facilities to ready recruits for hippogriff riding. Roughly 200 Sable Company marines (about two-thirds of the entire company) live and sleep within the tower, spread throughout the remaining floors below the hippogriff aeries. The top three floors (17 through 19) and the roof all serve as aeries for most of the city's domesticated hippogriffs.

I know the wording on the Sable Company is confusing in some places but the marines ride Hippogriffs (flying horses) not Griffons.

Sebastian is a little surprised at Cressida's sudden shift in attitude once they get behind closed doors. "I don't think the Gray Maidens are anything to worry about, especially if the queen put Sabina in charge. She was an exceptional guardsman and only has the city's best interests at heart."

He doesn't have much to offer in the way of planning their operations; Sebastian isn't one for skulking around in the shadows. "I don't see why we need to be sneaky about it. It's a hospice, they're physicians. Why can't one of us just go in for treatment? You said it was at an Arkona warehouse on the West Dock? Simple, I know exactly where that's at."

At the mention of hippogriffs, Sebastian's eyes glimmer. "That is a splendid idea, Lucien! I volunteer for aerial scouting duty." After a sharp look from Cressida, he tones down his excitement. "Of course, we shall conduct ourselves with the utmost professionalism, just as we do on patrol." He coughs lightly, straightening up in his chair. In his mind's eye, he pictures himself atop a hippogriff, leading a regiment of pseudodragons into battle with a cloud of imps above the city.

Lucien smiles at Sebastian, happy to see that his idea has met his approval...and Cressida's.

"We have an agreement then. I would like to volunteer for aerial scouting duty too. It will be a rare privilege to see our wonderful city from above" says Lucien with dreaming eyes, losing for a moment his usual, stern behavior.

Lucien then looks at his companions. "Now we just need to decide whether we want to go now, or we'd rather go and see the man who requested our presence...Don't ask to me about it, though. I'm just too partial about it. Seeing the Great Tower from within is a great honor. Did you know that Queen Domina commissioned the tower in 4684, but she did not survive to see its completion in 4688 AR?"

Let us see Sebastion's friend first.

Vencarlo's Academy
5:30 pm – 4 Abadius 4709 AR
Weather: Sunny and Cold

You depart from Citadel Volshyenek and head north to Old Korvosa. As you walk, you take note of more and more signs of the blood veil spreading. Most people are covered up from the cold but you catch glimpses of red blisters underneath their scarves and everyone seems to be coughing.

When you arrive at Orisini Academy, it is surprisingly quiet. Although it is getting late in the day, you would still expect to hear fencers training within. A sign hangs from the front door that reads, "Classes Cancelled Today." A few moments after you arrive, a serious-looking Vencarlo appears and ushers you inside. "Thank you for coming. I'm glad that my messenger was able to find you."

The swordsman leads you down a hall into a study, the windows of which are tightly shuttered and curtained. He explains in hushed tones, "There is no time to waste. I have an important task for you." He calls to someone in a side room, "You can come out now."

Wearing simple traveling clothes, the alleged assassin, Trinia Sabor, holds a wide-brimmed rider's hat and a wig of long red curls—gifts from Orisini to use in her disguise. Trinia appears both nervous and excited, and upon sighting you she smiles, saying, "Sorry about the trouble I gave you in the Shingles a few weeks ago." Vencarlo then asks, "Please be seated everyone." He remains standing as he speaks.

"You were all at the Queen's debacle, so I don't doubt you recognize this charming young woman. I had only just reached my home the night of Her Majesty's morbid gala when that rogue Blackjack and this startled woman arrived at my doorstep. The people's hero and I have had some dealings in the past, but still, it's been some years since I've seen the scoundrel. He was quick with his words, and soon swooped off—doubtlessly to right some other festering wrong—but not before entrusting Miss Sabor into my protection and care. Although I don't know Blackjack's motives or politics, I trust his judgment and have seen much right done by his blade. He says the girl is innocent of the crime she's been accused of, and I'm more disposed to trust a hero of the city than the tantrums of some bloody-minded harlot playing at queen."

"The matter is simple: Korvosa is no longer safe for Miss Sabor. I've arranged for friends in Harse—a couple of well respected ranchers—to take in our beautiful renegade until this whole 'assassination' foolishness blows over. Its the first leg of the journey where we find our problem, though. Both the Korvosan Guard and the Sable Company have been searching for the young lady tirelessly—they've stopped by here three times so far, and each time I've only just barely been able to turn them away without inviting a search. My most reliable contacts have gone to ground in light of the recent uprisings, and Her Highness's considerable bounty for Trinia's capture makes the use of new agents inadvisable. Thus, after some time to let her trail cool, I turned to you resourceful lot. Care to escort a lady home?"

"I plan on funding the escape by supplying Trinia with a horse and supplies for her travels, along with any reasonable mundane supplies that you might need to smuggle her out of the city."

"I believe that a simple, subtle egress would work best and draw the least attention. With the recent events near North Bridge, I suggests a slow walk through the city down to High Bridge and then up to Dwarfwalk Road, mingling with the afternoon's merchants leaving the city. I think you should avoid more dramatic attempts to leave town. The Guard is certainly on alert for such theatrics as flying people or other shows of magical power."

"However, I put my trust in your decisions and leave the details of Trinia's escape to you. I cannot go with you. I'm too well known about town and my history with the monarchy might draw unwanted suspicion. After you depart, I plan to attend to some private business and disappear into the anonymity of Old Korvosa for a time. I ask that you do not try to find me. I'll call upon you again when the time is right."

Nadya scowls at Sebastian, "Some of us knew she was innocent too. Secret trials..." She turns back to Trinia and Orsini, "I'm definitely willing to help. If Ayako and I had been able to figure out a way to get her away at the execution, we would have. Thank goodness Blackjack appeared. You might need to talk some sense into Sebastian though. He's still convinced the Queen has the city's best interests at heart." She thinks for a moment on Orsini's suggestion for an escape plan, "How many people are trying to leave the city right now? With this disease spreading, are they going to just let people out or is there a danger that they will close the gates. A lot of people leaving might make it even easier to get her out."

"Dwarfwalk Road is a major street of commerce. I have not heard word of that merchants are being prevented from completing their trade routes. Many travelers leave during the afternoon. It would have been better if you got here sooner. By the time you get to the gate, it will probably be after sundown. It is a little unusual for people to leave so late but not unheard of. There probably will be a checkpoint at the gate checking for those with signs of the disease, but as long as you appear healthy, I don't think they'll stop you from leaving. Just keep your heads down and you should be okay."

Lucien frowns as soon as Vencarlo's plan is revealed. He shakes his head several times as the man speaks, but he does not dare to interrupt him. Instead, as soon as the man is done with his speech, Lucien chimes is respectfully, with his usual solemn voice.

"I'm not sure I want to be part of this. I perfectly understand your reasons, Vencarlo: trusting a city hero is always reassuring. But I cannot settle for this. I don't know this Blackjack personally, and although I admire him as many Korvosans, I don't think that he's depositary of infallible truth. I can't know if his judgement about this woman is right or not. Should he be wrong, I would be actively encouraging law breaking instead of protecting my city as I vowed to. I've sworn to defend my home town, and until proven otherwise I cannot but consider her a criminal. She's been judged guilty by our city's authorities and I must trust that there's still justice in Korvosa."

Lucien's tone is somewhat stern and inflexible. He looks harshly at Trinia as he grits his teeth, looking for a solution. A voice inside his head keeps resounding, confusing him and obfuscating his judgment.

You know why you don't want to help her, Lucien. You're attracted by her. But you're not ready yet. Your wife died four years ago, but you're not ready yet. You fear what your heart could feel if you accept to spend time alone with that girl. You are afraid. You fear a lot of things. Your god can't protect you from everything. Love hurts. And you're not ready to love anyone else. You fear love. You fear her. You must refuse!

Lucien shakes his head, frowning, his fists clenched tightly. He tries to push those thoughts away, but they keep echoing through his mind.

You're afraid...

No, I'm not. Abadar will guide my mind. I won't let my mind be guided by fear and loss. I must be a beacon of justice. I must see through this.

"I'm sorry" whispers Lucien, his voice suddenly far less confident and stern. "I...I didn't mean what I said. At least, not the way I said it. Vencarlo, would you allow me to speak to Trinia in private? I...I want to see if I can trust her. I need to be sure that Blackjack isn't wrong about her. I have supernatural means to ensure so. Trinia, would you like to follow me where we can speak alone for a few minutes?"

Ayako listens to Vencarlo's words and breaths out. This is indeed quite serious. But I believe you are right, the so-called trial was a sham and we can't trust that justice will be served in this city.

She thinks about Sebastion and Lucian. Sebastion and Lucian might be trouble though, Sebastion still believes in the queen and Lucian is bound by his oaths as a paladin of Abdar.

Sebastian protests ,"We're standing right here!" Sighing, he assents to the plan. "Sabina has her doubts about the queen, and if Blackjack doesn't trust her, that's good enough for me. The plague is a different matter," he says, shooting a sidelong glare at the girls, "but I'm more than willing to help smuggle Trinia out of the city."

As Lucien offers to question Trinia, Sebastian feels vindicated. "See, that's what I thought they did before her trial! Instead, the queen hired some bloatmage to interrogate her." Sebastian shivers with disgust at the thought. "Master, I know you recommend against flying her out, but what would you say if we already had access to Sable Company hippogriffs for legitimate reasons?"

Trinia responds nervously, "Yes, of course. I have nothing to hide from you, paladin." She accompanies Lucien to a private room and waits for his questions.

Vencarlo looks somewhat surprised at Sebastian's claim, "Well, first I'd be curious as to how you have gotten access to hippogriffs but I suppose if you have that option it could work. Like I said, I'll leave the details up to you. I would suggest though that you don't bring Trinia to the Great Tower since the Sable Company is looking to apprehend her."

Sebastian grins. "It's not always easy being the heroes of Korvosa, but there are perks. We're conducting an off-the-books investigation into the plague on behalf of Field Marshall Kroft. We can disguise Trinia as Ayako and fly her outside the city walls. It should be simple!"

As soon as he finds himself alone with Trinia, Lucien smiles to her, more to calm himself down than to reassure the girl, although his original intent was to make her feel comfortable.

For a few instant, he just walks back and forth, undecided about how to start the conversation. In truth, he's focusing on his inner power and trying to discern Trinia's alignment*.

Assuming Trinia is not evil-aligned.

"I'm sorry if you're forced to witness this that will undoubtedly appear as a farce to you. But it's really important to me. So, your name is Trinia, right? I know that my new companions met you long ago, but they spared me the details. Details I'm not going to ask you. What I'm going to ask you is to look into my eyes and tell me that you're innocent. That all of the charges against you are false, and that those who pronounced them are liars."

With that said, his voice firm and resolute, Lucien looks at Trinia right in the eye, hoping to learn more about her and her motives than her words will ever reveal.

I am not trained in disguising someone but I suppose a wig and some make-up would help. Along with her fakign a limp.

Trinia is not evil-aligned.

Trinia removes her red wig revealing her short cut golden locks. She stares at Lucien with doe-like blue eyes.

"Yes, my name is Trinia Sabor. I'm an artist, comedian, and bard. I am innocent. I did not kill the king and the charges against me are false. Any confession I may have given was not my own but forced by mental control from the bloatmage that Queen Ileosa hired. I cannot tell you who killed the king, if it was the Queen or someone else. But I do know she is looking for a scapegoat and she probably picked me out of jealously. The queen is very vain and cannot stand beauty in others. I have doubts that the queen ever even loved King Eodred II but it was clear that the time I spent with the king infuriated her. I assure you my work was strictly professional and I had no ulterior motives towards the king or queen. At the time, I didn't realize just how far the queen was capable of going. Beside her staring hateful daggers at me in the hallways, I had no other interactions with her. And although the public called King Eodred II the stirge king, he was very pleasant towards me and I enjoyed our conversations during the lengthy paint sessions. When the job was done, I was paid and went on my way. I didn't expect to ever hear from the castle again. I was caught completely off guard when the queen declared me an assassin. I was so scared and I didn't know what to do. I hid for a few days and I was preparing to flee the city then when your friends arrived and turned me in. I don't blame them. They were only doing what they thought was right. But instead of getting a fair trial at the Longhouse Building, the queen sent her bodyguard to escort me to the castle for a private interrogation. There was no trial there. Only a farce of one. The queen's bloatmage dominated my mind and raped my will. He forced words out of my mouth that were not mine. I wanted to scream out in horror but I couldn't even move my body. All I could do was watch, trapped in the deepest corner of my consciousness, as I incriminated myself. When my execution was declared, it took every ounce of strength I had to keep it together. I was almost glad for the hood over my head because I was a sobbing mess. Blackjack has given me a second chance at life and I just want to leave the city that wants me dead so that I can take advantage of this opportunity. I promise you that I won't cause any further trouble if you just help me leave. That's all I want. My life in Korvosa was stolen from me. But maybe I can still start a new life elsewhere."

Lucien does not sense any lies or deceit from Trinia. You sense that she is being very open and honest with you.

Lucien listens to Trinia's account with increasing sorrow. My instict tells me she's being open and honest with me. And I trust it. But if what she says is true, that would mean that the whole city is corrupted, since its head is poisoned by treachery and deceit. If Trinia is right, the Queen is wrong. And if the Queen is wrong, Korvosa is in bad hands...

As soon as Trinia concludes her speech, Lucien smiles half-heartedly. "I understand your point, and I believe you're not lying to me." Lucien was used to recognize when others were telling the truth. There was something in his eyes that made the liars feel dirty. And he was able to catch the barest sign of that feeling of guilt in other. But that was not Trinia's case.

"So it is judged. May the favor of Abadar abandon me the day in which I follow the established order instead of what my heart tells me it's right. Justice is not embodied in countries or governments. Justice is inside one's heart. Inside of mine, at least. Although I don't partake of your choice to leave Korvosa, I'll help you to do so because I can understand your motives. This city has betrayed you, has deemed you guilty when you were innocent. Still, I believe that you could have the chance to fight for this city, had you decided to stay. But I respect your will."

Lucien's expression turns suddenly serious as he bows solemnly. "Here and now, my lady, I swear to protect you and watch over you until you reach your destination. May this sacred oath be always written in my mind as a prayer is written on stone."

With that said, Lucien stands up and smiles at Trinia.

Did you see? I'm not afraid, he tells to himself as he leads the girl out of the private room where they've been talking for the last few minutes.

When Lucien re-enters with Trinia, Sebastian impatiently asks, "So? Do we have a verdict?"

The Great Tower
8:00 pm – 4 Abadius 4709 AR
Weather: Night and Cold

Vencarlo allows you to utilize his academy to finalize your plans and once you are set, you head out towards the Great Tower. Trinia stays behind with Vencarlo and awaits your return with the hippogriffs.

As you round the edge of North Point, the Great Tower comes into view towering over all the surrounding buildings. Its black marble walls reflect the moonlight giving it a ghostly appearance at night. At this time of night, most of the hippogriffs are resting inside, but during the day the tops floors would be buzzing with Sable Company Marines coming and going through the air. You climb the gently sloping bridge to the main entrance on the third floor and await someone to great you. It doesn't take long for Marcus Thalassinus to meet you and welcome you inside.

"Well if it isn't the upcoming heroes of Korvosa. I just received word from the Field Marshall not too long ago to be expecting you. She speaks very highly of you, you know? Your work with ridding Korvosa of some of its most dangerous criminals has not gone unnoticed. Gaedren Lamm. Devargo Barvasi. Trinia Sabor. It's a shame that last one got away. But even so, I have a feeling we won't be seeing the likes of her again. She's probably halfway to Riddleport by now."

"You've never been to the Great Tower before, have you? I insist that you let me give you the full tour. Unless you have some pressing matter to attend to?"

Well a small tour perhaps, we are investigating the outbreak of sickness and need to scout out the river for possible sources.

Since he's taking the horse and cart to a designated spot outside of town, Sebastian won't be at the Great Tower.

After the plan is finalized, Sebastian bids his friends luck and sets about preparing the horse and cart with Vencarlo. He is dismayed once he realizes that volunteering to drive the cart means he may not get to see the Great Tower or ride a hippogriff, but decides that it would be his penance for his misguided position on the execution. Once the others have gone, he apologizes profusely to Trinia. "Miss Sabor, I am deeply sorry for my part in your tragedy. I had thought the queen would have verified the truth of your actions with the help of a priest of Abadar, but my sister informs me that she sought the services of a horrid mage instead. There's clearly something dangerous happening in the castle."

Staying behind also allows Sebastian to spend a little more time with Vencarlo. The man had been scarce in recent weeks, and something about the his story about what happened the night of the execution didn't add up. While working with the horse, he attempts to casually broach the topic. "Master, what did you think about Blackjack's performance at the execution, the way he handled the headsman? Was it needlessly reckless, or did the element of surprise justify his approach?" An opening feint. I didn't see him at the execution, so he shouldn't have any opinion on the matter.

Orisini Academy

Trinia replies, "It's okay, Sebastian. You were only doing what you thought was right. I can tell that you are a good person. Although I'm a little nervous because I haven't spent much time outside the city, I'm looking forward to my stay in Harse. It'll be an exciting opportunity, much like a vacation. Actually, while we wait, I'd love to hear some tales of your other adventures."

"I wasn't at the execution." states Vencarlo, "I abstained in protest of the Queen, but Blackjack told me all about it. In fact, he told me you and your friends helped him out. Otherwise, he might have lost his head on that block. Blackjack can be reckless but he's served the people well over the years. You've made quite the impression on him and I'm sure you'll see him again."

"You are going to search the river now?" Marcus asks incredulously. "You think that ship the Guard sunk has something to do with the sickness, don't you? But the sun's already gone down. You aren't going to be able to see anything out over the river. Even on a bright day, the river's too muddy to see much further than a hand-span. Why don't you wait until the morning? I could show you around tonight and you can come back tomorrow when it is light out."

"Have any you actually rode a hippogriff before? It's not the same as riding a horse. A could probably spare a marine tonight if you'd like to do some training. Again, I emphasize that practicing during the day would be more ideal for beginners but I can understand your urgency with everything going on lately. Follow me upstairs and I'll introduce you to some of the men and then we can go to the aerie and get you saddled up."

Thank you very much for your help. Ayako follows.

Trinia's easy forgiveness mollifies Sebastian for the moment, and he acquiesces to her request. By now he's had plenty of practice at telling the story of how they had taken on the reviled crime lord Gaedren Lamm. The story has since taken on a life of its own, with Sebastian's role becoming somewhat inflated. The comedy of the bumbling minions contrasts nicely with the gruesome poetry of Gaedren's grisly end, and the rescue of the children ends everything on a positive note. "And that's how we became the heroes of Korvosa!" Finishing his story, he removes his pseudodragon's mark, handing it to Trinia to admire. "It's hard to believe it was only just a couple of months ago. How time flies." Full of action and adventure, daring heroes and dastardly villains, the only thing missing is a bit of romance.

News of Blackjack's praise completely derails Sebastian's verbal fencing ploy. "Truly? I'll have to start carrying that poster with me. I might be able to get it autographed!" Forgetting his petty suspicions, Sebastian lets loose a volley of questions. "Is he planning to move against the Queen? What do you think he'll do? How did you meet him in the first place?"

Orisini Academy

"Wow!" Trinia stares at Sebastian all starry-eyed. "You really are a hero. You've truly inspired me. Maybe one day I could be a hero like you? I wonder if there will be any opportunities for adventure in Harse. I guess I'll find out when I get there."

Sebastian catches a glimpse of Vencarlo smiling fondly at the two of them's interactions.

In response to Sebastian's questions, Vencarlo pats him on the shoulder in a fatherly manner. "Truly. I don't know his plans yet. I don't know if he knows what his next move will be. But I doubt he'll move against the Queen directly. The Queen certainly has her faults but a coup isn't his style. Blackjack fights for the people. He is a symbol that gives the people the hope and courage they need to stand up for themselves. Whatever he does, I'm sure it will be spectacular. As to how we met, let's just say we had the same teacher once."

Marcus' tour and introductions take longer than you'd have hoped for but eventually you are saddled up and in the air. You politely refuse the marine who offers to fly with you so you receive only a few rudimentary tips before you leave. The flight isn't as spectacular as you had hoped. The view is amazing (if you don't suffer from vertigo) but the ride is also jerky and bumpy. The hippogriffs are hard to control and a few times you thank the gods that you are strapped on tight or else you may have plummeted to you death. Eventually you are able to coax the animals to land on Hillcrest Street and you wait outside the academy for Trinia so you can make the switch.

Oooohhhhhh! The world won't stop spinning.

A little jealous of Lucien and Ayako getting to go ride the hippogriffs, Nadya nonetheless enjoys getting a chance to see a different side of Sebastian around Orsini and Trinia. Seeing the girl's infatuation with him, she doesn't miss a chance to drop a few more heroic tales of the swashbuckler while waiting for Lucien and Ayako until she hears the clatter of hooves (claws?) in the street outside. "I think that's them. Let's go." Stepping outside she can't help but giggle at Ayako's reaction. "Maybe its best I didn't go. I have a feeling I would have been sick to my stomach up there. They are beautiful creatures." She approaches to help Ayako down.

Thank you, we best get Trinia out of the city asap, they'll be expecting the hippogriffs back soon.

Ayako hurries inside and starts to throw on her disguise.

Orisini Academy

Ayako and Trinia switch outfits. With a little work, Trinia bears a striking resemblance to Ayako when you are finished. Trinia gives Vencarlo a hug. "Thank you for all you have done for me." To Nadya, Sebastian, and Ayako, "I'll see you on the other side. Be careful."

Although you don't notice anyone, if an outside observer was watching, he'd see Lucien and Ayako enter the academy and then the same two people exit again a few minutes later and remount their hippogriffs. Although Trinia claims no formal training, she seems to be a natural rider. She glides through the air with a supernatural grace that makes Lucien envious during his clumsy flight.

Once Trinia and Lucien depart, the remaining three board the horse and cart that Vencarlo prepared and head around to the Dwarfwalk Road Gate. It is a long trek from the academy but most civilians are asleep at this point. Only a few beggars and cut-purses remain on the streets. One aggressive beggar stumbles up to the moving cart, hacking and wheezing, a splotchy red rash and blisters the size of ripe grapes covering his face and arms as he pleads for coins to buy food and medicine. Unable to help him, you continue on. Along the way, you notice at least five other individuals—beggars, common folk, and even a merchant—who display familiar fiery rashes. You encounter no other trouble along the way until you reach the gate.

Dwarfwalk Road Gate

When you reach the gate, it is past midnight and you are the only travelers currently on the road. The gate is manned by two Korvosan Guards and a Gray Maiden. The guards shout out, "Halt! State you names and business." Tension rises as the Gray Maiden approaches the cart and begins examining each of you closely and searching through the cart without asking permission. Her mask hides all emotion except a cold gray stare.
