Aura of Good (Ex) The power of a paladin's aura of good (see the detect good spell) is equal to his paladin level. Detect Evil (Sp) At will, a paladin can use detect evil, as the spell. A paladin can, as a move action, concentrate on a single item or individual within 60 feet and determine if it is evil, learning the strength of its aura as if having studied it for 3 rounds. While focusing on one individual or object, the paladin does not detect evil in any other object or individual within range. Smite Evil (Su) Once per day, a paladin can call out to the powers of good to aid him in his struggle against evil. As a swift action, the paladin chooses one target within sight to smite. If this target is evil, the paladin adds his Cha bonus (if any) to his attack rolls and adds his paladin level to all damage rolls made against the target of his smite. If the target of smite evil is an outsider with the evil subtype, an evil-aligned dragon, or an undead creature, the bonus to damage on the first successful attack increases to 2 points of damage per level the paladin possesses. Regardless of the target, smite evil attacks automatically bypass any DR the creature might possess.
Divine Grace (Su) At 2nd level, a paladin gains a bonus equal to his Charisma bonus (if any) on all saving throws. Lay on Hands (Su) Beginning at 2nd level, a paladin can heal wounds (hir own or those of others) by touch. Each day he can use this ability a number of times equal to 1/2 his paladin level plus his Charisma modifier. With one use of this ability, a paladin can heal 1d6 hit points of damage for every two paladin levels he possesses. Using this ability is a standard action, unless the paladin targets himself, in which case it is a swift action. Despite the name of this ability, a paladin only needs one free hand to use this ability.
Aura of courage (Su) At 3rd level, a paladin is immune to fear (magical or otherwise). Each ally within 10 feet of him gains a +4 morale bonus on saving throws against fear effects. This ability functions only while the paladin is conscious, not if she is unconscious or dead. Divine Health (Ex) At 3rd level, a paladin is immune to all diseases, including supernatural and magical diseases, including mummy rot. Mercy (Su) At 3rd level, and every three levels thereafter, a paladin can select one mercy. Each mercy adds an effect to the paladin's lay on hands ability. Whenever the paladin uses lay on hands to heal damage to one target, the target also receives the additional effects from all of the mercies possessed by the paladin. A mercy can remove a condition caused by a curse, disease, or poison without curing the affliction. Such conditions return after 1 hour unless the mercy actually removes the affliction that causes the condition.
Channel Positive Energy (Su) When a paladin reaches 4th level, he gains the supernatural ability to channel positive energy like a cleric. Using this ability consumes two uses of his lay on hands ability. A paladin uses his level as her effective cleric level when channeling positive energy. This is a Charisma-based ability. [smaller]Divine Bond (Sp) Upon reaching 5th level, a paladin forms a divine bond with his god. This bond can take one of two forms. Once the form is chosen, it cannot be changed. The first type of bond allows the paladin to enhance his weapon as a standard action by calling upon the aid of a celestial spirit for 1 minute per paladin level. When called, the spirit causes the weapon to shed light as a torch. At 5th level, this spirit grants the weapon a +1 enhancement bonus. For every three levels beyond 5th, the weapon gains another +1 enhancement bonus, to a maximum of +6 at 20th level. These bonuses can be added to the weapon, stacking with existing weapon bonuses to a maximum of +5, or they can be used to add any of the following weapon properties: axiomatic, brilliant energy, defending, disruption, flaming, flaming burst, holy, keen, merciful, and speed. Adding these properties consumes an amount of bonus equal to the property's cost (see Table: Melee Weapon Special Abilities). These bonuses are added to any properties the weapon already has, but duplicate abilities do not stack. If the weapon is not magical, at least a +1 enhancement bonus must be added before any other properties can be added. The bonus and properties granted by the spirit are determined when the spirit is called and cannot be changed until the spirit is called again. The celestial spirit imparts no bonuses if the weapon is held by anyone other than the paladin but resumes giving bonuses if returned to the paladin. These bonuses apply to only one end of a double weapon. A paladin can use this ability once per day at 5th level, and one additional time per day for every four levels beyond 5th, to a total of four times per day at 17th level. If a weapon bonded with a celestial spirit is destroyed, the paladin loses the use of this ability for 30 days, or until he gains a level, whichever comes first. During this 30-day period, the paladin takes a –1 penalty on attack and weapon damage rolls. BACKGROUND:
Lucien Endrin was born in 4685 AR in Korvosa, third son of House Endrin. Not intended to inherit neither the lands nor the lordly title of his family, he was educated since the childhood to become a member of the Korvosan Guard e protect the city from the threats both internal and external, as many of his forebears had done in the past.
His childhoold was relatively happy, with all the benefits that ensued from being the son of a noble korvosan House. His education was focused on the training in the art of fighting and on a rigid ethic formation that had to ensure that he could one day become a strong man capable of protecting his city not only from others but also from himself. Thanks to the friendship between his family and House Jeggare, Lucien had the privilege to spend his adolescence serving in an abadaran temple, in which he was instructed on the principles of the faith of Abadar and learned how to count, read and write, beyond the ethics of the faith. This way, Lucien developed a strong inner devotion, whose seeds, however, were yet to germinate. As soon as he reached his legal age, Lucien joined the rank of the Korvosan Guard, and there he served for almost 8 years with inflexible adherence to the rules and with a genuine personal enthusiasm in pursuing the good of his city. In the meanwhile, he grew in love with a young noble lady of House Zenderhold, named Valmira, who he married and soon afterwards gave him a daughter. His life, since then studded with successes and honors, was however destined to suddenly change during the fall of 4709 AR: his wife got sick after a travel to Magnimar and even the best healers proved unable to help her. She died in atrocious sufferings, after a slow agony. Soon, also his daughter failed ill, suffering the same disease of her mother; she died soon afterwards. Lucien was thrown in such a discouragement that his personality grew gloomier: he turned to the embrace of the faith, where he found solace. The tragic events that struck him, however, turned him into a much less tolerant individual, particularly regarding the Korvosan Guard’s corruption and the fact that its members were more focused on protecting the richest districts instead of looking after the poorest ones, where criminality and depravation prospered. With great scandal, he decided to dismiss from the Korvosan Guard, committed to the ideal that the true goal to pursue was to promote the union of good and law into the city. If the Korvosan Guard couldn’t let him pursue that aim, he would have done it on his own. A few months after his dismissal, Lucien’s sister, Alika Endrin, still a little girl, was kidnapped, throwing the Endrin family into chaos. Having turned without success to the Korvosan Guard to obtain assistance, Julyan Endrin, Lucien’s father, secretly asked his son for help. Lucien didn’t hesitate to put himself into the desperate research of his sister: his investigations began exactly in Old Korvosa, where he spent some weeks gathering information. Finally, he managed to learn that his sister’s kidnapper was a man named Gaedren Lamm. His findings were a tad late though. Someone had already freed his sister from her kidnapper. Thankful, Lucien brought back his sister to his family, but carefully avoided any contact with his relatives: everyone in the family looked disdained him for his choice of leaving the Korvosan Guard. Knowing the he was going to receive no support from his family, and still not completely over his pain, he started roaming the city, searching for those who had saved his sister Alika. They however seemed to elude him at anytime. Lucien kept up though, and continued his quest. In the meantime, following the clues left behind by his sister's mysterious saviours, he learned about an underground complex.
PERSONALITY:
Lucien is an extremely polite man, driven by a strong sense of honor and by the belief that true justice is only in the union of common good and adherence to the laws. Where the laws are not intended for the common good, or the people rebels to rightful laws, authority’s intervention is needed. It has been this belief - reached during the period spent in the church of Abadar – that convinced him to leave the Korvosan Guard.
Lucien loved his wife and daughter, and was harshly struck by their loss; after a brief period of sorrow, however, he has found a new sense for his life, turning to the good of his city, which he sees as a family in the real sense of the word, also thanks to his religious beliefs. His aim is now to protect his city from every threat, trying to prove himself that even if he was unable to save his “small” family from the disease, he can ease the pains of his “larger” family, Korvosa. Lucien is not an intransigent individual and tolerates minor law’s violation if the common good is at stake: at the same time, as many other korvosans, he personally follow a strict moral code, centered on the protection of the city, its inhabitants, streets, buildings, laws and trade.
APPEARANCE:
Lucien is a young adult and is considered handsome by many. He’s capable of speaking with unmatchable eloquence and he’s gifted with a natural charm that has gained him the attentions of many ladies and the sympathies of many nobles. He considers his appearance as a very important matter, since he believes that if the people would look at him as an example, they must see something appealing and pleasant. |
