The only reply Talon receives is silence, but if he could somehow see past the cover of wood and shadow, he would witness a smile on Lars' face.

19 Stag (6hp dmg)

6 Trawets
5 Lars

Meditrina is baffled by the shrinking weapon and unable to determine the source or reason for it. A little concerned, she casts Bless on the entire party.

The CL of the effect is just above your die roll, Meditrina, sorry! Everyone gets +1 on attack rolls and saves vs fear. You'll have to remember, as I likely will not.

Jumping forward to attack the stag, Agatha instead slips on the icy snow and her attack deteriorates into an attempt to stay upright instead.

Trawets magically training kicks in, and he casts Detect magic looking for the means of the shriking weapon. As he concentrates on the spell, he notices the presence of magical auras in the 60' cone shed by his cantrip.

Lars sword again swings out, striking the stag a wound across its flank. Lars, you provoke for AoO when you move?

End of Round 1

No problem.

The Talking Stag - Round 1 addendum

The stag turns its might rack of antlers towards the fleeing Lars trying to gore him in the backside as he rushes away but the natural weapons miss the shifty ranger.

The stag rears up on its hind legs kicking at Talon then crashing down with his antlers on the rogue. Talon dodges both the flailing hooves, but is overcome by the crash of antlers for 5 hp.

Talon feels the antlers come down hard on his head and feels dizzy, a trickle of blood coming down his forehead.

The Talking Stag - Round 2 - continued

After having his bell rung by the stag, Talon counterattacks, getting into a position to flank the mighty beast. Unfortunately, his vision is still a bit blurry or something, as his dual attacks both miss quite badly.

With his familial weapon shrunk to tiny size in his hand, Andras steps away from the stag far enough to ready his shortbow without interference.

Suddenly appearing behind Talon is a diminutive flying blue-skinned creature. With dragonfly wings, and a needle like rapier, the fey creature stabs at Talon from behind cursing him and shouting "I'll teach you to attack my pet! The Talking Stag - Round 2 - continued

Meditrina advances to attack the stag, but the sun on the snow blinds her temporarily, and her attack misses wildly.

Agatha steps in behind the rampaging stag and cuts it down with her greatsword, leaving the mighty beast beaten and bloody in the snow.

With the stag cut down, Trawets turns his frost ray on the tiny fey creature zipping around Talon's head. But the nimble fey creature easily avoids the icy ray.

Lars tries to slink through the snow and ice, but his movement is slowed enough that he cannot get an attack off against the foe.

Lars, all the squares here are difficult terrain remember? You can't move all the way to the fey creature and attack it this round. You can move 15' and have standard action or move 30' without (this is how I moved you on the map). Am I forgetting something?

The Talking Stag - Round 3 - continued

Deftly dodging an AoO and moving to flank, Talon's dual blades miss the spry fey creature.

Andras is delaying until his owner posts or the 24 hour limit is up.

The fey creature, now flanked, darts out from in between the combatants and up 10' in the air. Safe from any melee attacks, he uses his spell-like ability on Lars.

Lars needs DC 15 Fort Save or be shrunk to half-size from Reduce Person (Spellcraft DC 21 to recognize). The rest of the party is up now against only the fey creature.

Post removed, as I think in 3 dimensions myself. If Talon and Lars are adjacent to the ground level space the bug occupies, are they also adjacent to the square above at 10' high (by a diagonal)? I believe they are and would hence have the ability for AoO as the creature casts his spell-like ability (not for the movement which is still a 5' step. Anyone disagree with that?

The Exchange

Human Rogue 2 DEAD

Seems right to me. It's kind of like the 4-corners states. Utah and New Mexico still share a border, even if it's very small.

That's kind of what I was thinking, now that I envision it. Same with complete diagonals on the 2-D surface. Either way, I will give Talon's AoO and offer one to Lars based on that model. Since the attack is for the casting not the movement, it won't do sneak attack damage since no longer flanking.

The Talking Stag - Round 3 - continued

As the fey creature flies backward, and begins casting, it leaves itself open for an attack from both its human foes. The strike by Talon hits the fey creature, the cold iron burning through it for full (5hp) dmg.

Lars may take his AoO and creature needs concentration check to get SLA off before the save. If he hits, he may end the fight...

I took the movement as he moved 10' not that he was now at 10'. One way or another there was an AoO. I'm assuming if Lars doesn't kill him my Force Missile will, if he does it won't go off and I'll add it back into my sheet. Correct?

Correct sir. Your missile will do him in if lars misses, but Lars will be reduced, and you'll be down one missile.

Agatha's sling bullet flies wide of the diminutive target but Trawets magical force bolt strikes true, slamming the little fey to the ground unconscious.

End of Combat

With Talon at 4/11 hp, and Lars reduced in size for 6 minutes, the party didn't exactly come out unscathed, but they won the fight. Defeating the fey (an atomie, in case you didn't know) and the stag earns the group 200 xp per player, moving their cumulative total to 802 or about 40% to level 2.

Turning to Lars "You should come back to normal size in a few minutes. I can't tell you how many exactly but the size change won't be permanent."

"Well that is good to hear..." Said Lars as he looked at his body with a mixture of surprise and interest "You spell casters can do the strangest things" He commented as he walked around and saw his small bootprints.

"If I wasn't going to, I would have taken it very personally" He said as he loomed over their fallen foe, and for the briefest moments one could notice a flash of murder in his calm eyes, but it disappeared just as quickly as it came.

"We should go a bit further before resting. Let's not allow our prey too much distance," Talon says.

Go ahead and roll your channel if you choose, Meditrina. The group needs to decide if they are camping for the night, or pressing on. It's been about 4 hours since you left Heldren, which was in the middle morning, so roughly, just after 1PM or so.

The dead atomie is diminutive size so his weapons, a rapier and shortbow, are virtually useless to the party. The tiny fey has no other magic items or treasure, but his appearance and death may solve the mystery of the talking white stag seen earlier by townsfolk.

As Trawets promised, after just a few minutes of searching and stamping around, Lars grows back to normal size. Frightened by the fey and the shrinking of his father's weapon, Andras makes the decision to turn back, and bids the rest of the group good luck as they pursue the stolen Lady of Taldor.

I think she was referring to the departing Andras. The channel brings everyone but Talon up to full HP. Talon is at 7/11 after the channeling.

Leaving the body of the atomie and its stag companion behind, and now one person smaller, the party moves on up the trail still looking for the missing noblewoman.

Even with the snow falling and blowing the trail of the bandits is easy to follow. After about 15-20 minutes of wandering the trail drops down toward an icy stream. About 30' away, a human-sized snowman stands right in the middle of the path, before the frozen stream. A crude wooden sign leans against it and bears the words "Trespassers Turn Back!"

Here is the map of the crossing.

The trail here is normal terrain. Off the trail or on the frozen stream counts as 2 squares of movement. A DC 10 Acrobatics check is required to run or charge across the creek. Please consider your tokens to be about 30' away from the snowman on the trail, and move accordingly.

I would like your help selecting the last of the six spots to get in the game.

I have taken: human Cleric, human Wizard, and human Barbarian and thus have 3 of the classic roles filled.

I believe I will be taking a human Rogue and a human Ranger for the other two spots, but want to see the final products.

That leaves the last slot. The candidates are Raed (dwarf monk), Tal (elf wizard), Khar (human sorceror) and Andrus (half-elf bard).

Look over the characters and consider the make-up of the party already, then tell me (either here or by PM) which you'd prefer to have hold down the last spot.

This is a very difficult question.
I will check the last 4, but at the moment I tend to Andrus. We are lacking in the Cha department, and we do have a wizard.

Female Human Follower Alias

Agreed with Agatha, the last 4 have really amazing characters that are making it difficult to pick only one.

That said, Charisma is ideally a stat I would like to see more of within the party. Sure, Meditrina can be an able diplomat, but we still lack in other face skills such as Bluff (and maybe Intimidate?). Having someone with Use Magic Device would also be really useful.

So for me, Andrus or Khar seem to be my prefered choices. Usually, I would think we wouldn't need both a Sorcerer AND a Wizard in the same party but Kar seems to indicate that he wants to go into Dragon Disciple, which I guess limits this potential issue to some extent.

I think either character would be a good choice.

Thanks ladies for your feedback.

I invited Talon and Lars from the recruitment thread to join us in the game, giving us a rogue and a ranger for some skill points.

Gentlemen, if you can have a vote or preference up tonight, we can get the game started quicker. Feel free to PM if you are uncomfortable posting here in the open.

If all goes as planned, we will add our 6th member tonight, and be able to get intros started on Monday.

I think I'd lean toward Andrus then Khar slightly behind. We are fairly martial at the moment. I've got a personal prejudice against monks, I just don't like them.

Meditrina: I do have UMD as a class skill and have put ranks into it, I just don't have the CHA to boost it more.

Hi! Really happy to have been selected. I really wanted to join this group. Thank you.

I'd have to second either Andrus or Khar as the best fit for the party configuration.

FYI, I also have UMD trained, though only a 10 cha.

Excited to start!

With 4 votes cast for Andrus, I think we have a clear winner. Even if Lars votes the other way, the majority chooses the bard.

I will notify the group in recruitment, close that thread and be ready for introductions of players in Gameplay.

Thanks for helping chose, and glad it was a mini-consensus.

As for the Falcata, I'm starting with a masterwork one and get arcane bond with it at lvl 5, so I can upgrade it. Only downside is that it's normal metal.

Hello everyone, and apologies for the late reply, I've had internet trouble but that's all hopefully behind me now. Thanks for picking me Doc, and I am looking forward to playing this campaign with all of you.

For what its worth I would have voted for Andras as well; a bard with a military background and a more melee focused build is something I have rarely seen and will be interested to play alongside.

@Agatha I like the picture you linked a lot more than the picture on your character sheet.

Thanks. I do spend some time browsing for pictures. I think the one offered at paizo are quite ok, but I prefer something more unique.
And the picture fits nicely in her concept. I just do not like many of fantasies female adventurer bimbos dressed in chainmail bikini, wich is just incredible dumb.....
But it seems we are all gathered at last.
For those living in the city a while longer, Agatha is the local dog breeders aprentice. She is kind of shy, but is seen frequently at the local tavern, spending a little coin to drink in silence. If asked about her dogs she warms up and can speak for hours without end about this or that puppy.

While Andras himself is relatively new to Heldren his family is not, they moved in several years ago. Those who have lived there for some time probably know his parents, father being a former Ulfen Guard and mother from a fallen noble house, as well as his grandfather, little brother and little sister. The brother moved to Oppara a few years ago. His eldest brother, like Andras, has never lived in Heldren itself.

It's the eldest brother who now came to Heldren to say good bye before moving to the Lands of Linnorm Kings.

Glad the gang's all here. I will work on introductions in Gameplay today, but I have a trip to Houston that will slow me down somewhat this week.

If in the meantime, you can each post here in Discussion the reason you are in Heldren, the sleepy village in southern Taldor (right on the Qadiran border actually), it'll save me a few minutes of research time trying to tie your intro to your background.

Agatha, I see yours already...

Depending on the weather, the airline, and my dinner meeting tonight, we should be able to get something started this evening or tomorrow.

I agree completely, its dumb, completely ruins immersion and makes you incapable of taking the character or story seriously.

Speaking of pictures, I think I found a better picture of Lars.

As for those who are living in Heldren: Lars has been there for a while now, so the locals probably know him already and if Agatha frequents the local tavern then he probably would have had a conversation or two with her and probably would have asked about her dogs, as the only ones he's ever had experience with were the strays in the alleys of Riddleport so to see someone training dogs would be something new to him. I also think he would have taken the time to ask about the different people in the town so he would have probably heard of Andras' family.

@DocEvil Have a safe trip Doc. Lars' reason for being in Heldren is because it was simply the latest point in his escape route that didn't have any sign of those who are chasing him, so he took it as a chance to rest, recover and recollect his thoughts, but the peace and tranquility got the best of him so he decided to stay longer than he originally intended.

Andras is in Heldren on family business, saying good bye to his brother before he moves up north to the Lands of the Linnorm Kings. The brother has been recuperating with his family in Heldren after losing a hand defending princess Eutropia in Oppara.

Andras does visit Heldren more often but that is purely to stock up and he's never there for more than a few hours.

EDIT: Those living in Heldren would know his parents, grand parents, younger sister and possibly his younger brother. The younger brother does not live in Heldren any more.

The sister could actually be a friend of Agatha, being a 16 year old of half Ulfen blood. She's mostly be training with her father to improve her swordplay before moving of to the Ulfen Guard barracks in Oppara.

Human Rogue 2 DEAD

Talon is a bounty hunter who has tracked his prey to Heldren after finding a reference to the Silver Stoat, Heldren's single inn.

But now the trail has gone cold. Out of funds after blowing everything gambling, Talon may need to consider any job to get back on his feet, and perhaps find reason to keep going at all.

He spends most of the day at the Silver Stoat, drinking and perhaps looking for a game of chance to win back everything he lost.

Trawets was sent to the Heldren area by the Nethys high priest in Oppara to investigate a rumor (a rather vague and weak one at that, but the high priest could get Trawets to stop bothering him for a quest) about strange beasts in the Border Forest.

The bruiser part isn't an issue but the loony part might be. Andras' sister is a future Ulfen Guard, she can dish it out. Any way, it's up to you.

Well gang, American Airlines has other plans for me today. Rather than departing at 130 and arriving at 6, I am now departing at 820 arriving at 1030 and have a 90 minute drive after that.

Won't get much work done tonight at this rate.

Your threat successfully got the last flight cancelled, so I am now at home instead of on the road. Get to try again tomorrow, because today was such fun!

Ouch! I had a flight cancelled on me last month, and was able to pay an extra hundred something for the privilege of sleeping on a bed in denver for seven hours rather than the airport floor. Yay!

If you open the gameplay thread we can sit at the tavern having a drink and getting to know us better. Maybe someone needed some repairs and we all helped to do so, and he invited us to a drink later for our time.
You know like in the mid-west.

Doesn't that always end with someone getting shot?

Gameplay is open. There is a map of Heldren (the opening village) in the Campaign info tab, and a key to the building sites. If you are from town, you may know about the shops/proprietors or you may not. Explore the village, interact with the locals as you see fit. The action will unfold a bit at a time, and maybe over the course of a day or two.

Just checking in. Everyone okay with the game so far? Got your interest? Not sure who has played before or has knowledge of the story and who has not.

I said in my intro I am open to constructive criticism, so if you see something that needs changing/correction etc, please let me know.

This is your game, so you should get maximum enjoyment from it. I am having a blast with it so far...

Everything is going well. I haven't played this before but I will admit to peeking at the start after you said the trail was a breadcrumb. I was very impressed with what you did with the information that was supposed to be from knowledge local or diplomacy checks, I found it very enjoyable.

Everything is wonderful. I have no idea what this AP contains, outside of reading the Reign of Winter Players Guide, so this is all new to me. I particularly like the current interaction with the forbidden nature of Sarenrae within this region and the struggle for Meditrina to use her magic in a way that helps people, in such a way that doesn't put others (including herself) in danger.

Again, thanks for DMing this, its very exciting!

Loving the game so far, and loved the comment (Whatever your motives) made me laugh hard.

Great! Sounds like we all agree so far. Get your gear and let's get started.

Two things:1) I need a volunteer to keep a party log book. This is a word document, shared through Google Drive or similar, that summarizes the party's adventures to date. If find in the slow-moving world of PBP motiviations for certain actions get lost in a month long combat. The log doesn't have to be detailed, but it should be a fair representation of what has happened, what loose ends are out there, and what the plans are.

Here is the best example I have in play now (not that it needs all the links and pics):RotRL Log

Any takers? We can switch up the duty if necessary.

2) Regarding Combat - I will post initiatives and then list the order. I roll for each enemy separately. You are not required to wait until your turn to post but I will re-align the actions in time in the summary posts. Waiting until your turn delays combat unnecessarily, and if you can write a good "if, then" post, it speeds things along nicely. You'll see what I mean shortly...

I hate to bring this up, but it always needs to be brought up when new players get together in my opinion.

Is there a DM decreed loot splitting method or do we need to agree on something?

If it's up to us here are my thoughts, if it's DMs call forget what I have to say below.

I personally can't stand the whole accountancy loot split system some people love were Everything you find is valued and characters can go into debt because they picked up a +2 longsword or something. It just seems to greedy and complicated. I prefer a sort of need/greed system. If something is useful to a character they get it, period. No need to know it's value. Anything not wanted gets sold and added to the money found and equally split when you get back to town. I feel others getting things they need or can make the best use of helps the whole party. Things useful to multiple party members the party decides. For example: the wand of CLW goes to the cleric, the spellbooks go to the wizard, the +1 bow goes to the archer (ranger, rogue, whoever), the +1 longsword goes to the tank (fighter, barbarian, paladin, whoever); a pearl of power the party would need to decide who gets it if both the cleric and wizard want it.

This is just my 2 cents worth and I don't care how we do it, we just need to know before loot starts showing up.

Female Human Follower Alias

I don't mind setting one up and keeping it updated. I quite like writing.

EDIT: RE Loot

I played (technically still playing, only up to the end of book 5) WotR and our method of keeping up with loot I found quite useful. Basically, any loot we got went into a pile, and people would pick up something they needed from the pile. Of course, most of us were thoughtful, and knew what each party member wanted / was in most in need of, so it worked out decently well. Anything left that no-one wanted, we then sold, the money going into a party "account". If you wanted to buy something, say a +2 longsword, you bought it from the party account.

Forgive me if this is standard practise, but its what worked best in my experience, although its heavily reliant on characters not being overly greedy. IDK, maybe people have other preferences on how to do it.

That's close enough to how I've always played to be fine with me. This is the way I expect most people to do it more or less as this is how I've always done it. I found though that some people get very worried about "you have more GP worth of stuff than I do". I was shocked the first time I heard that, so I just want to get it out in the open and taken care of before it comes into play.

I have seen booth. I play in a campaign where everything is piled in the groupbank and you buy it at half price. And you can own the bank of gm.
Works rather well, especially as our wizard has all the necessary feats to custom make what we want. Being Savage tide you have all the time in the world.
On the other side I played a if you need it, take it game and it worked, so far rather well too. In the end, most items are no brainers when it comes to loot. And if our mage runs around with a million gp in scrolls and wands and all I own is a +1 sword, I honestly do not care.
I accept what you agree upon, I know that I will get my share and my needs are usually rather light

BTW, this is just my initial take of the Journal Log. If anyone wants full access thats totally ok as well (its currently view only). If there is anything obvious I missed, could add, or whatever, let me know, its just what I got started on today.
