Okay, we've entered the part of the campaign that drives the players and GM nuts. It's a freeform espionage sandbox within House Vonnarc. you will have daily duties, which I'll give you various checks to make. Failing these duties yields punishments, up to and including flogging and execution. Succeeding means rising in the servitor ranks and thus being better placed for your real job here...finding out information on the drow's purpose in Celvynvian, the corrupted elf gates, and general drow plans for the surface world.

You can use Gather Information checks (your primary source of inquiry) as well as any other means for getting the info you seek. Remember though, that you only have a limited time to play out this charade, and getting caught likely means execution.

Go forth my children. Explore, Report, Cooperate.

We are not going to go through this drudgery day by day. Rather, I am going to skip a few days at a time, making your rolls for you, and posting the results in summary emails. Occasionally I may stop to give you some RP time, or to do something your character really wants to try, whether it is breaking into a locked room, pinning down an NPC for a long chat, etc. No leaving the House just yet.

Please make up a list of things your character would be doing to gather the info you are after, and I'll work it into the daily summaries.

OK, so looking at Bigrin's last post, let's figure out what we want and how best to go about it.

Our ultimate goal is to find Allevrah and disrupt her plans. Whether that's done by killing her or somehow ruining her reputation some other way remains to be discovered.

Seems to me that the first thing we need to do is find out where she is and what she's up to, right? I'm not that sure we need to know that much about our current house other than to make our ultimate goal easier to accomplish (i.e. it can't hurt to learn more about it, but I don't know that we even need to get into the closed-off areas, do we?)...

Allevrah is in a different House and the Drow are infighters to a fault. If we leave evidence the House was involved when we go for Allevrah, or present such evidence as a way to get to her, we could kill two birds with one stone.

Sounds like we need to figure out what her big picture is. Obviously, it involves harnessing another asteroid and dropping it on Golarion. Where? How close is she to success? What sort of forces does she have at her disposal? Where is she holed up? How do we get there?

That's the sort of intel we need. I just figured getting to know who's in our House would be a start, because those are very large questions we're trying to answer, and we won't be able to make significant progress on them initially. Our House, though - that's something we can get intel on pretty much instantly, and we can start extrapolating from there on how to answer our major questions.

Justification of spell selection:

4th - Arcane eye: you guys get us the juicy rumours, and after hours I'll be spying on anyone and anything you want.

3rd - Invisibility sphere: if we need to get anywhere unseen in a hurry or indeed, if we need to run for the hills, this feels like the go-to-spell.

2nd - Knock: if we're going to be doing any sneaking around, doing breaking and entering, this feels like an essential spell.

I'm loading up on the usual complement of summoning, abjurations and evocations. See invisibility thrown in just in case...

Any spells you guys'd prefer?

I'm here, just at a loss. It sure sounds like our first real goal is to get into the noble's areas to get to the sensitive info. I could try to sneak in there, but that seems like a great deal of risk right now. We haven't been in the city for a week yet, and drow are paranoid bastards. We have just over three months to gather our info and be gone - if our toil doesn't bear fruit soon, then I'm good with being a bit more proactive.

One thing I'm a bit unsure of - do we have reign to explore the city once our shifts are over? It sounded like it, but I wasn't 100% sure.

OK, I'm back and don't expect any more interruptions to my posting until mid-October.

So it seems to me we need some way to move up the ranks. We can try waiting a little longer to see if something happens, or make something happen ourselves.

We have Magpie as an option; perhaps we turn her invisible and sneak her out to create a threat for us to respond to? Perhaps give her a summon scroll to use to bring in a monster? That's obviously got some risks with it...

We could also try to set up one of our fellow guards somehow.

There's something I'd like to add to our options to cause mayhem for us to abuse: I have Charm Monster in my spellbook. Enchantment is one of my opposition schools, but I can still cast it on someone. Or something. And I can also make stuff invisible -- several things, thanks to the spellbook once belonging to the late and unlamented Nolveniss. :D

Not sure if those help unless we try to charm a drow (maybe we could do that to set up one of our fellow guards?).

I guess my feeling is let's explore the city a bit as we can but wait 3-10 days before we try to take matters into our own hands if we haven't found some way to get noticed (in a good way) before then.

Those are all good options to have on the table, and if our explorations of the city and our service to the house doesn't start reaping us any reward in that week or so, then I'm all aboard trying to bootstrap a promotion.

I meant to mention this sooner, but my travels have my posting all buggered up.

If you do a good job in your menial tasks, you can advance to more responsibilities. Undamesta hinted at this to arca when she said she couldn't trust you yet. Depending on how good you do your jobs, make creative solutions, or use skills to influence others, you can advance quicker. Of course, if you do a bad job, made poor decisions, or get caught doing something unauthorized, you will be punished, perhaps even flogged or executed.

So, be creative, be patient, and I'll try and make the next 13 weeks of game time interesting as I can.

Also, don't think that your various checks and plans are not successful, just because you don't see an immediate response. These are drow, after all, a very suspicious race where your worst enemy could be your closest family. They aren't going to throw themselves at your feet with one diplomat check
