He can exclude up to two bad guys from the healing burst when he channels. He can save as many hostages as possible, help some PCs who need healing, and not help the hags.
And frankly, at 2 or 3d6, I'd let him heal the hags if we can save the commoners. We can put those 11-12 hp back on the hags right quick.
I like the fcfs plan for the pbp becuase it speeds up combat, but I think the rule must come with the understanding that as long as we're not holding/delaying based on the NPC actions, we should be able to get a little healing or support from our team during that time. Meaning, it's okay for Akiros to say "I'll wait to see if Jemini or Verik heals us" without actualy delaying or holding an action. Does that put us all on the same page?
Verik of Abadar |
I support Verik channeling, since he can exclude the hags. If they go back to their first order, they at least live another round.
Heh I'll make sure to exclude at least the blue aura hag you're fighting, and then I have to pick whichever one is not as "dead looking" for the other exclusion.
EDIT: just saw the Nikolai post. 81hp. Yikes!
Jemini of Lebeda |
And, um, Lorekeeper, not to take away from your great rolls to take down the green hag. But Akiros goes before Jemini, and since he's already grappled, he's for sure gonna attack. So, assuming he can do two HP of damage, that would leave Jemini free to maybe heal some hostages or something. Or do whatever else you want her to do.
As DM Barcas said, its a first-come-first-serve basis. But, more importantly, from Jemini's perspective either hag may be down and dying - but not actually dead yet. A channel from Verik may have been enough to revive one considering that he can only ignore 2. So Jemini is happy to play it safe.
Akiros doesn't actually lose any action in essence he'd be delayed until after Jemini, and that is still before the hag's next turn. Now Akiros is free to act against the bigger threat.

I'm glad you brought this up Steven, because I hadn't really thought about it in those terms with PbP. Despite the posting order, I admit that I am/was trying to perceive the round in order of initiative and not by pure order of post. Which can be sticky if the haste goes off before the character attacks, or bless or when the channeled heal goes off before moving and attacking, etc.
I'm all for the first-come-first serve (fcfs) concept as it relates to the characters acting together before/after foes/NPC's, as I think it reduces potential retcons("character B moved to spot x for full attack and posted first but character A moved to same spot x and has higher initiative but posted after character B" sort of issue).
As long as it doesn't break player verisimilitude for folks, I'm all for communication in Discussion or OOC as Steven outlined above. It happens organically around the gaming table, but understandably it's harder to pull off in PbP.
DM Barcas |
The only reason I have you all put Initiative in your posts is so that I can figure it out easier if I have to go back and re-read something for clarity. For practical purposes, there are effectively two Initiatives after the first round - PCs and NPCs. It doesn't line up precisely with the rounds, but you have to make some concessions for the at-your-own-pace style here in PBP.
I process the posts as if they occur in the order that they are received. If we resolved things within the party by Initiative, it would take much longer to post in that order or to retroactively apply bonuses and penalties to rolls.
DM Barcas |
Perhaps I wasn't clear enough about what happened. Hargulka used Ghorraneaux as a pawn and bait. The original plan was to have her lure them there, and then have her and Tahngruun kill the party so that Hargulka could conquer the city at his leisure. As Tahngruun is gone, she concluded that Hargulka double-crossed and sacrificed her - and that he must be marching on Sanctuary with Tahngruun at his side.

By the way, now that the Tilansia site is down for language converters, I did manage to find a couple that were decent for use if anyone was looking for some.
For elvish (looks good anyway):

For others:

(Silibant2 or Standard2 are good for Celestial I think)

Ya, we know that Nik is Verik's favourite toy to play around with. I mean, sure, he's likely to get his hands and tongue chopped off for it eventually, but for now, wheeee! ; ]
Speaking of fun, I'm sure all you guys have seen all these already, but just in case not, check 'em out! They're Great! (and if anyone can recommend similar stuff, please fell free to! )
The production company, Zombie Orpheus Entertainment, has a bunch of great stuff!
OH, and thanks Celeador, glad you enjoyed it! : )

I lean towards the troll king. He will be with the army, I can pan out on the scrying to get an idea of where they are at in relation to Sanctuary. That way the city is better prepared if we are not able to get their before the army attacks.

Ok, so, Akiros has just laid out his plan to Nik. Not sure how the big guy will take it, but there you have it.
He'll also be trading in his ruined(?) full plate for studded leather or a chain vest.
Kydal will also be riding without barding.
He plans to make it back to Sanctuary as fast as humanly possible and will do everything in his power to make that happen. He's got some very compelling reasons to do so.
He's also going to suggest that we load up all the loot in the secret chamber. If it lasted undetected all these hundreds or thousands of years, a few more days or weeks won't make a difference. We, all of us, need to get back to town as fast as possible which means we don't take anything with us that's not essential. At least that's how I see it.
On another note, you guys ever seen a show called "Doomsday Bunkers"?
Crazy what these people are doing! I mean, I totally get it, and if I had the extra cash and a family to protect I may just be doing something similar myself. But man some of these folks are serious about it! And are laying down some serious dough to do it!
Vorduvai |
Yeah in this case I'm preferring to look at some of this as a player over a character - if the loot is stowed fine in 2x Haversacks + distributed and such and we are not in a significant encumbrance bracket for it, then I don't want to leave it.
Concerning the desire to get back faster and throwing off full-plate and barding and all that - if there's a desire by both Akiros, Nikolai, Zander etc. to get back faster than the others (i.e. faster overland move speed and/or force march travel) and split up into two groups of characters, I'm fine with that as long as that's not an excessive burden on the DM to cover from a story standpoint. Verik would volunteer to take some of Akiros' "stuff" to lighten his load so he can forge ahead with the vanguard.
On a sidenote, I think Akiros is going to find Nikolai is not amenable to his suggestions - either about his supposed riding skills or about being in the "middling" group hehe. /grabpopcorn
Verik of Abadar |
Loved Elsir's post on the entire preparation and detect thoughts process - very cool imagery. I could do a Verik supportive reaction to it but don't want to muck up the scene :)
DM Barcas |
I would prefer it if you all stayed together. The travel is going to be relatively glossed over in a single post (however long it may be). If Akiros, for instance, arrives eight hours before the others, I would have to work his story out and keep everyone else behind for that period with a separate story.
If you really want to ride ahead, I can make it work. It's up to you guys. But it would make it easier on me to keep you all together.
Steven T. Helt RPG Superstar 2013 |
I ghink all that matters,to us is,tbat we,do, in character, the bezt thing for home So if glossing travel gets us,to an i.evitable envounter, tgat's fine. If we can warn home and pull a hundred trolls off the main force, we want whatever makes the best difference. Nikolai will ride middle or will ride front of an assault line. Whichever has us killing vad guys, and saving farmers first.
DM Barcas |
Nikolai has mentioned a few times trying to harry scouts.
This is a map of the Stolen Lands. The elven fortress is at or around I22 (where the I is). Tahngruun's path was headed to L20/M20, where he can cross between Candlemere Lake and its counterpart to the south. Sanctuary is at I15. Your path back will not cross the troll army, which will most likely be coming up the east side of Candlemere.
Khaladon |
Ok well ya, I'm pretty much in line with Steven. My thought was just to do what would make most sense to our PCs, i.e. get home as fast as possible.
If having say Zander, Borodin and Akiros arrive significantly ahead of the others throws off your story or makes your job more difficult I have no problem whatsoever with you just rolling it all into one post.
S'all good.
Vorduvai |
Agreed - I'm all for saving the DM time, and looks like the choice of chasing after Tahngruun directly would be a potential waste of time...and catch folks between the enemy army and the city. The RP effect of some folks rushing ahead is interesting, but the sort of thing that's probably easier to hand-wave and do around a table as opposed to PbP.
The sad thing is that I've looked at that map long enough in the past (with Kingdom Building rules) that I know what the lakes and rivers are called even though they aren't labeled...
EDIT: In other news, this past Saturday I finished the main arc-story of my monthly home Pathfinder campaign that has been going since March of 2011. Sadly, the players trounced my BBEG on the last fight, though they did a great job both tactically and with the rolls. So they hit Level 11 + get to try out Mythic Tier 1 (dabbling in Mythic rules but not more than that), and now I get to be a player for a few months while Cromlich runs the next adventure.
Vorduvai |
Congratulations! Was it a worthy ending?
I thought so. Actually in late March we were running out of time for the last fight, and so the group decided to cut it short and have a special evening session just to cover that last fight and all of its RP aftermath, which I greatly appreciated. Now I owe 'em a loot list while they level up and sort out their mythic choices.
Campaign isn't over, though I'm off for a few months while Cromlich has the group going on a "side adventure" that's important to the backstory of one of the player characters, and then after that we'll see what they gravitate to for the next phase of the campaign (I gave them hints of three separate arcs they could pursue for mythic advancement purposes).

Hey don't forget you guys owned those slavers in my Irongate adventure! So it's only fair.
Vorduvai |
Yeah well don't forget that in my adaptation of Realm of the Fellnight Queen you pwned the BBEG there too. Still, it was memorable in the way you went about it, so as a DM I'm just glad you found the adventure thrilling.
What's funny is that, despite all the preparations and anticipation, the fights you think are going to be rough don't always behave that way, and the ones you think are simple or straightforward become the near-TPK's that weren't expected.
