Verik of Abadar |
Eesh...that's pretty horrible in the description there. I don't recognize it, other than it reminds me slightly of an extraplanar Retriever (but that would just be mean). Uhhh....go get 'em Nikolai!

Holy cow!
I was thinking there might be a short cut to the dungeons, not a treasure trove! I'm trying not to channel daffy duck at the moment but +3 Elven Chain??!!!
Hehe that is what happens when you take a wrong turn at Alberquerque...there's definitely more than a buck-and-a-quarter quarterstaff in that armory! Consequences schmonsequences...okay I'll stop now.
No it really is impressive - even the masterwork stuff is awesome as soon we will have the capability to enchant it. Verik would like to arm himself with a mw longsword for the remainder of the expedition if that's okay with everyone.
Elsir Tel’ran |
- +3 elven chainmail
- Helm of the Fortunate Soldier
- Boots of Elvenkind
- Gloves of Elvenkind
- Cloak of Elvenkind
- Spellguard Bracers
- Scabbard of Keen Edges
- Wand of scorching ray (CL 3)
- Scrolls of silent image, summon monster II, communal protection from arrows, communal resist energy, lightning bolt, haste
- 8 masterwork longswords
- 4 masterwork composite longbows (+2 strength)
- 3 masterwork elven chainmail
- 20 +1 feybane arrows
So we have the following items. I did some brainstorming and I came up with some ideas.
- +3 elven chainmail - Nikolai (his AC is rather low and he can benefit from the light armor.)
- Helm of the Fortunate Soldier - The only melee who dosen't have a headslot at the moment is Nikolai. I think best case scenerio would be if it could be combine with Akiros's current helm.
- Boots of Elvenkind / Cloak - Being the primary scout, I think that this is probably best for Borodin, neither slot is being used by him and it plays off his ability.
- Gloves of Elvenkind - Elsir or Verik, but I'm leaning towards myself due to seeing below. It helps me cast, it plays off a strength (spellcraft) and I can use it to further myself and Verik's item creation later.
- Spellguard Bracers - Verik, I know Borodin wants them, but Verik tends to get very close into combat, I think this makes the most sense because when we *need* him to cast a spell, we really need it.
- Scabbard of Keen Edges - I think this one was made for Jem. Outside of the leader role she is a secondary striker in combat and out of the melee classes, she has relatively low damage. This would help offset that damage curve.
- Wand of scorching ray (CL 3) - Elsir, due to lack of any direct damage.
- Scrolls of silent image, summon monster II, communal protection from arrows, communal resist energy, lightning bolt, haste. - Elsir or Borodin, but I don't there is a whole lot on there Borodin could use at his current magus level of 4- 8 masterwork longswords
- 4 masterwork composite longbows (+2 strength)
- 3 masterwork elven chainmail
- 20 +1 feybane arrows.
Pretty much free game. The best of the lot is the elven chain. I would say that Zander if he is still here should get the lions share of the feybane arrows.
In other news, I'll get a ingame up in the morning. Someone else needs to use the communal computer I am on.
Steven T. Helt RPG Superstar 2013 |
I think all of this is sound. The only exception I'd voice is that Nikolai is light on loot and Jem is over, if I remember these conversations correctly. That scabbard on Nikolai's sword......
But if Jem is still actively playing, and wants the scabbard, she has Nikolai wrapped around her little finger. : )
Akiros Ismort |
Hey all, I'm back!
So, Hmmm, so if I'm reading this correctly, Akiros' share of the loot is to lose his current helm to Nikolai? Sweet!
: P
Joking aside, the things he would be interested in would be the scabbard, one of the bows (he already has a mw comp bow, but the +2 Str is a nice addition) and a few of the arrows. Oh, and he wouldn't pass up the helm if it landed his way.
But whatever works best for the group is cool with me.
Verik of Abadar |
I disagree regarding the Bracers. The whole concept of the Magus is to be able to cast spells in melee. I don't think Verik is interested in them but if he changes his mind Borodin would offer to pay for the cost of crafting a set for him.
Sorry gang that I've been out a bit this weekend, so I'll get an IC post in soon.
In terms of the treasure ideas, I will fully agree with Cromlich on the better benefit of the Spellguard Bracers going to Borodin. While I have worked to move Verik towards the martial and to be less of a cloistered wussy paper-pusher, he is not geared to be a cast-in-threatened-combat sort of cleric. So I'll stick to the usual tricks of 5' step & cast if necessary, and channeling energy doesn't provoke an AoO anyway, which is what I'm looking to enhance by 9th character level.
When I took over Verik from Rellen a couple of years ago, I had the strong impression that Verik's devotion to crafting feats implied that most of the magic he wields would be directly crafted. So with little exception I will try and stick to that concept as much as possible. I'm still not happy with Verik's weapon load-out and keep fiddling with it organically, so to that end I'd like a masterwork longsword (with the lore and history behind it) to eventually enchant and give new meaning to.
EDIT: Aside from that, I'm wholeheartedly endorsing Elsir's desire for the Gloves of Elvenkind and the wand, Akiros with the Helm and bow, Nikolai with the enchanted elven chain (please put an end to that woeful AC misery please please), Borodin for the Bracers and masterwork elven chain, and Zander for masterwork elven chain...and I would say either the Cloak or the Boots of Elvenkind for Zander, since he's technically in the expedition. Looks like Akiros and Nikolai are both interested in the Scabbard, so that's gotta be worked out.
EDIT TO THE EDIT: I know Jemini is over WBL and AC is not a problem for her at the moment, but I'd love to see the third masterwork elven chainmail go to her. Both for lore/role-playing purposes, as well as to not pass up on the chance for elven chainmail that doesn't impact her movement. LoreKeeper, if you're concerned about AC boost I'd just say to "lose" the heavy wooden shield, as that's always been a bad look for Jemini's noble fashion anyway ;)

As usual, I put in for the items that interest Nikolai, but have no hard feelings if anything gets distributed otherwise. He could take the chain and helm, chain and scabbard, or just the chain and find something else later.
Or, anything else. I'm more passive than Nikolai is about party treasure, so let's work it out here and roleplay it by personality.
DM Barcas |
- +3 elven chainmail - Nikolai
- Helm of the Fortunate Soldier - Akiros
- Boots of Elvenkind - Borodin
- Gloves of Elvenkind - Elsir
- Cloak of Elvenkind - Zander
- Spellguard Bracers - Borodin
- Scabbard of Keen Edges - Akiros
- Wand of scorching ray (CL 3) - Elsir
- Scrolls of silent image, summon monster II, communal protection from arrows, communal resist energy, lightning bolt, haste - Elsir
- 8 masterwork longswords (one for Verik)
- 4 masterwork composite longbows (+2 strength) (one for Akiros)
- 3 masterwork elven chainmail (one for Jemini, Zander)
- 20 +1 feybane arrows
So, I plugged this (from Verik's suggestion) into my WBL chart. For the value of 24,000 gp, Jemini is still over (by 21.5K); Verik is under (by 13.5K, though some of this is a lot of his items being half-priced); Nikolai is over (by 10K); Akiros is over (by 7.5K); Elsir is under (by 2.5K); Borodin is under (by 1K).
Going to rectify Verik's predicament now.
Verik of Abadar |
Oh... That's useful.. Verik or I could craft amulets of natural armor now..
That's a wondrous find there! I love the descriptive flavor of it too - that provides some great stuff to post when we're making "stuff" later in the timeline.
Akiros Ismort |
That all sounds great to me! Thanks y'all.
If it's ok, I'd also like to have Akiros take some of the arrows, say four? But if not, no worries at all.
So there's also now a MW composite longbow (no Str bonus) to add to the loot pile.
Verik of Abadar |
Posting and updating profile later tonight.
For Borodin and Akiros and anyone else that is using a bow, please divvy up those arrows (maybe 5 Akiros, 5 Borodin and 10 reserved for Zander) as you never know when they may come in handy.
Also, now's the time to select a backup weapon or ranged weapon if you don't have one.
Akiros Ismort |
Verik, those items managed to remain hidden for thousands of years, so I think they'd be fine to leave in the room for a little bit longer. Plus, would save us all from looking like pack mules hardly able to walk. Yes?
Great descriptive post though! :)
Now as for this new puzzle....hmmmm....Ghosts?
Verik of Abadar |
...so I think they'd be fine to leave in the room for a little bit longer...
Heh...ever see The Mummy remake? Just substitute beetles for spiders in our case. You know the whole ruins is going to sink into the swamp if we defeat the hag right? I'm takin' the loot! ;)
Steven T. Helt RPG Superstar 2013 |
If anyone wants a claim on Nikolai's +1 chain shirt, they can have it. In case they're stuck with a mw chain shirt.
In this fight, Nikolai will chance that the stairs are trapped and run for the hag. I might bull rush any drones away from the cloud on the way through.
Can we still haste him? And can Elsir dispel or disburse the cloud?
Vorduvai |
Nice Map Isaac! What tool are you using to make that, including the little avatar chits?
I have a rough idea to try and prevent the hag's commands to suicide the captives, but Verik would have to win initiative over her (risky). Verik has a Dispel, but not sure he could win that roll over the Cloudkill CL.
@Steven - Would working with Verik on getting up there a different way be beyond a reasonable norm? He could cast Fly on him, though now we're talking potentially two rounds of actions. Elsir has Fly, but I think Haste is done for the day with him...
Vorduvai |
Driving home just now and thinking of the encounter - I don't think the good aligned characters can just hand wave this with the captives all potentially getting killed and trust to random chance that the trap won't be triggered if we attack.
It could prove to be stupid, but anyone up for trying out a hasty gambit to see if we can buy some time? I had an idea and if it stinks I don't think we are much worse off than lucky/blind initiative rolls.
Steven T. Helt RPG Superstar 2013 |
Vorduvai |
How about one hit, a grapple, and I drop her off the balcony for ya?
Fly would still be faster than running, hasted, around the tower twice.. But if you cast it on me first and I delay, I'll charge her and keep her from screwing with the captives.
First round I can cast, consider it done as long as you're in touch range. Getting a post going shortly...it's a little unorthodox!

B—I, uh.....we had this idea, and now Verik is dancing. I, uh....
I have no words.
Told you it was a crazy idea. Maybe harder to convey here in PbP than if we were around the gaming table. I don't want to ruin anyone's RP or cause a metagame issue, so I'll spoiler my thoughts here:
So I'm playing along, thinking our "defeat" plays to her weakness, seeing if I can get closer to that center area, whether it's within 30' or right to them. If enough (four?) of us can do that before initiative drops...depending on when she goes and then when the captives go (which has to be after her action to command them), we can Move Action to squares around the trap and directly block or AoO threaten any open squares to keep the trap from being triggered, plus then we can potentially do something other than just a Move Action (like cast and move). But we need to surround that trap.
That's my idea. Could be stupid, because if it fails we could be out there when the trap triggers. But I figured a crazy RP idea pre-initiative was better than just saying "well oops we lost initiative so the trap's sprung and the captives are dead oh well..."
Khaladon |
That is actually a pretty solid idea V, but I do kinda wish you'd told us it before, because I'm not sure if it could work unless, as you say, at least four or so of us did it. I understand why you didn't mention it though.
@DM B, Questions & comments:
- So is it about a 100 or so feet to just get up the stairs? Or even more because of diagonals?
-Also, I'd say Akiros (and maybe Nic & Jem?) for sure is at least a square or two inside the door, based on his previous actions, but of course that's up to you for final say.
- Did any of Akiros' actions play yet? (Prot from evil, intimidate)
- and, um, can re restart this whole scene? Pretty please? ; )
PS And so Verik is the only one of us who can even possibly beat a DC33 sense motive, IF he rolls a 20. So c'mon Vorduvai! No pressure! 8^D
