Franti rifled through the unholy figures' bodies, finding anything of value. He salvaged many coins, which he quickly counted and emptied into his bag. He gave a look to their armor, shrugged, and removed the false-crusaders' clothing. He found a vial, uncorked it, determined it didn't smell poisonous and threw it in the bag. He took out a scroll from one of the bodies, pretended to read it, nodded his head like he understood and tossed it over his shoulder for someone else to claim.

Despite taking their belongings, the fool didn't agree with not honoring their deaths. "That last undead thing you all took care of was given a proper burial. Is there a line you all don't cross somewhere I am missing?" The fool rose from the two dead men glad to be rid of their smell.

Franti walked to the elf. "Well, let us find a way to take them with us, shall we? Maybe we can make a little sleigh to drag them in." The fool's idea was flawless in his mind. He looked around for any long pieces of wood or planks.

The mongrelmen took the weapons of the 'traitors' as Lann called them and said his fellows could come back and get the bodies if the group changed their minds about them. They would be happy to dispose of the bodies if not, for they did not want carrion attracting more predators to one of the few remaining open passages in this part of the cave system.

At the hamlet of Neathholm, Lann summoned a few rafts and men to guide them across the lake to the island. With Lann in the lead, the residents stared and some backed away and gave plenty of room for the 'uplanders' to pass, but no one objected to their presence or tried to block their path. They were all different, with parts of at least six different creatures in their forms, on average.

Lann led the group to the highest point where sat the largest house on the island. A pair of mongrelmen stood guard and one went inside for a moment and then returned with instructions to enter. Inside they were met by Chief Sul (Image Link), a bloated and unpleasant-looking but mild-mannered mongrel with one clouded eye, seated on a wide padded stone chair.

Lann addressed the man as 'Chief Sul' and explained the events at the guard tower, the aid the uplanders provided, and the journey through the caves. "In the cave of the death-cougher, we found it slain by two of the uplander traitors disguised as crusaders, also dead. These," here Lann gestured at the group, "Are clearly enemies of the traitors." Lann glanced at the group for confirmation, then stepped aside to let the Chief speak.

"We owe you thanks and hospitality for your deeds." The chief's voice was surprisingly soft and high for one so large. "You may stay in Neathholm as guests as long as you need to. But tell me, what do you seek so far below your surface home?"

"All we seek is a way back to our home. There is a fight going on now, as the demons have found a way to get to the town. It looks bad. We need to get up there to help.". Ellena further explained about the battle, their falling through to the tunnels below and the silver dragon's apparent sacrifice.

She wasn't sure how to correctly impress royalty, even mongrelman royalty, so after giving her version of the last few days, she stood silent, giving the others an opportunity to jump in as they wished.

When Ellena started to describe the demon attack, Chief Sul looked gravely concerned. He stood as he listened and grew more agitated as she described the battle, pacing back and forth. Eventually, he sat again and let her finish.

He sighed and said, "While the uplanders consider us freaks and outcasts, our ancestors were among the first to try to drive back the demon hoards. We have remained true to that goal and would even now fight on behalf of the cause of Iomedae, Saranrae, Shelyn, Torag, and Desna. We know a way to the surface. We will give you what aid we can and show you the way. If you make it to the surface, will you tell the leaders that we will forget all that we have suffered if we are allowed to once more see the light of day and fight the demons who cursed us with these forms?"

His voice rose with emotion as he asked his last question. His whiskers twitched and he had begun to sweat profusely.

Karas didn't flinch as they passed through town and the villagers ran the gambit of horrific to slightly mutated. He also didn't look on them with any pity. He knew from experience, pity was worse. Instead he smiled to those that met his gaze.

Karas nodded in affirmation to Lann and waited as the chief spoke.

"I know a lot about how you have been treated. I've seen the same. But they are good people and would surely accept another ally in the war, especially since we have likely lost much. I will gladly deliver the message regardless."

Chief Sul had two small houses prepared with bedding and simple food and water provided. He sent over a bundle with a group of potions inside: 6 potions of cure light wounds and 3 potions of lesser restoration.

There are mundane supplies for sale it town and a 75% chance of magic items available if the cost is 200 gp or below. They will also buy items at half normal purchase price.

Shortly after the middle of the day, Tauni and Cobblepaw both began to feel ill. They developed fevers and movement started to become painful.

Tauni takes 2 points of Dexterity damage and 1 point of Constitution damage. Cobblepaw takes 1 point of Dexterity damage and 3 points of Constitution damage.

Anarya was first to recognize the symptoms of their illness as filth fever, probably contracted from rat bites the previous day.

Ellena doesn't need much when it comes to gear right now. If Franti wants to start selling the excess gear we have picked up from his tracker, this might be a good place to do so. I think Ellena was carrying that masterwork hammer and a masterwork chain shirt that should return the group a nice coin.

Avelina found tears in her eyes as Chief Sul gave his humble request. She gave a flourishful bow to the leader of the mongrelfolk.

"You shall not have to sit huddled underground for any longer, once I return to the surface. My name is Avelina Theodosia Iomedae Rydell Cecilia Galfrey, Heir Presumptive to the Crown of Mendev. I swear by my name, my Lord Father and Mother, and The Inheritor Herself that I shall ensure your unwavering devotion shall not be forgotten."

Avelina tried her best to maintain an air of regal composure, but she could not help but grin at the situation. She was the secret princess arrived to reward the mongrelfolk for their virtue!

As the group settles in, Tauni's unwellness becomes more obvious. She is alternatively pale and flushed, and her brow beads with sweat. But when Anarya crosses paths with her, Tauni is cradling her rabbit, Cobblepaw, in her arms. "Please, is there anything you can do? I know he's just a rabbit, but I've lost so much this year. My father, my mother, and now-" Tauni choked on her words, unable to think of all of the friends above that might be lost. The rabbit has numerous bit marks that are obviously infected, but the rapid breathing of the limp creature hints at something more seriously wrong with it.

As the others talked with the chieftain, Franti looked around the hamlet. While the opportunity to play for the chief’s "court" was appealing, the fool knew that his kind of diplomacy was less sought after than the promises of Karas and Avelina. He spied a small market, and dashed towards it.

After a quick assessment, the fool came back, grabbing at the gear in his friends’ bags. He rummaged through their belongings, asking each of them if anyone had any claim to anything. He looked through Ellena’s belongings first. “Any takers on the brooch?” the fool rang out, cutting through and conversation. He tossed it to his side, beginning what would become a sizable pile. He turned to Karas’ backpack, smile across his face.

___

Franti negotiated with the merchants:
My lovely friend, what do you know about Torag?” The fool gave a slap to the hammer. “This little monster was personally used by one of His holy servants. Buying a holy weapon is almost like donating to a church.

-And if you rub out the spores, these shirts would be rather cozy. Look at the design. Sleek and protecting. Even though they were traitors, those crusaders were well protected.

Yes,” the fool agreed, “it is a bit frayed.” The fool nodded. “And yes, it is only ten feet as well. But just think of what fun you could have with this rope. Think of the joy it will bring your children when you bring it home.

Gold? Oh heavens, no.” The fool rolled his eyes, rolling the brooch in his fingers. “Gold belongs in coins, not fashion. You’ve been seperated from above, so I’ll keep you up to date...” The fool smiled, winking at the mongrelman merchant. “In the upper circles of Mendev, everyone wears copper.

___

The fool came back jingling an hour after his expedition began, handing out coins to his party. He formed stacks of platinum, gold, silver and bronze, tiny towers of the wealth they had earned. He divded them evenly, but a look to Avelina's crossbow and Karas' new blade. "Only fair I suppose..." the fool whispered, moving a few coins from their stacks and distributing them back to the rest. The fool then recalled he had a set of caltrops and a few arrows he took of his own. From his own stack he took more coins, and distributed them once again. He counted on his fingers, shrugged, and decided that it was fair enough.

Never before had the fool earned so much in such a short period of time. His smile stretched ear to ear as he counted his own share. “Eleven platinum, nine gold, two silvers and six coppers. Is it Desnus already? Surely it must be my name-day!

He pointed to each stack, calling out his friends to share the wealth.

Gold to be added as follows: Franti:119.26, Karas: 103.18, Ellena: 121.18, Avelina: 79.18, Tauni: 91.17, Anarya: 121.18. In addition, add the two CLW potions (or one if you already claimed one) and whatever items you claimed to your inventory. Tauni, add the scroll for now, we can modify if it isn't an arcane scroll.

Once they had acquired their funds, Avelina approached Tauni.

"Hello, Darling! As our resident wizard, which I am told are the experts on scrolls and such, would you mind collecting a few scrolls for me while you are shopping?"

She handed Tauni a list of three scrolls: Magical Sword of the Inheritor, Movement Unfettered by Heights or Depths, and, surprisingly, Protection from Evil.

"It would be ever so thoughtful of you, Darling! I trust you to get the right thing."

"If Anarya says it is okay for me to be around other people, I would be glad to. If I can find the right materials, I can perhaps draft the scrolls myself. I will certainly see what I can do."

Tauni is a bit shaky and sweaty, and obviously somewhat weak. She'll look to Anarya to tell her if she is contagious or not.

Anarya was fascinated by the mongrelman city, though the thought of so many humans corrupted by demonic energies filled her with sadness. That these folk could remain faithful and true after all this time alone in darkness is a testament to their devotion, she thought, inspired by their faith.

When Anarya noticed Tauni's and Cobblepaw's symptoms, she immediately realized the danger. Examining both of them, she realized both had succumbed to a fever brought on by infection. "Don't worry, Tauni. He will be fine. I can treat you both, but I need supplies. Both of you rest, and keep hydrated. Get him to drink water, if you can. I will be back shortly." Anarya hurried out into the market, asking any mongrels with human-shaped lips for directions to where she can find the materials she needs.

Anarya would like to purchase a healer's kit.

Returning from the market, Anarya addressed Tauni's questions about the disease. "You're not contagious, the infection spreads through the blood. Just... don't bite anyone," she says jokingly. "You should stay off your feet, though," she continues, turning serious. "This disease is unlikely to be life-threatening to you, but Cobblepaw especially will need rest. If he is out and about, the strain could weaken his ability to fight the disease."

Using charges from the healer's kit to fight the disease.
Treat Disease (Tauni): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Treat Disease (Cobblepaw): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
When Tauni makes her next save, she will get +4. (If the DC is 8 or less, so does Cobblepaw.)

"Rest today. If there is anything we need in town, we can send someone else to fetch it." Turning to Avelina, she firmly explains that Tauni is not going anywhere. "You'll have to buy the scrolls yourself, milady. Tauni needs to be ready for travel as soon as possible."
Provide Long-Term Care (Tauni): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Provide Long-Term Care (Cobblepaw): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
If Cobblepaw spends the entire day resting, he will recover 4 points from each ability score, rather than just 1. Tauni will heal only 1 point from each, since Anarya failed her check. If they spend the day doing things, and only get 8 hours of rest, Cobblepaw recovers 2 points from each score instead.

Driven by Tauni's concern for her companion, and knowing the rabbit is more at risk than the surprisingly resilient Tauni, Anarya focused her time on the rabbit. Even if she could not cure the disease, she could alleviate its symptoms, and felt confident that Cobblepaw's life was not in danger.

It is important to know if Franti pulled the brooch out in the presence of Chief Sul or if that was done later when the group was alone.

Anarya:
When Anarya went out to find a healing kit, she was sent to the house of Pastish, the healer. She was welcomed into the house by a woman with a very disconcerting look. She had beetle-black eyes with no iris, black feathers where hair would normally be, and her left arm was a tentacle, like an octopus or squid. She invited Anarya in and offered her tea. She moved slowly, as if she was very old. She asked what Anarya needed and was happy to gather the herbs, bandages, and other supplies. She then asked why Anarya needed these supplies. When she heard one of the party was sick, she offered to try to cure the disease with magic. She said she did not normally prepare the spell but could do so if they could wait one day.

There seemed no limit to the myriad deformities present in the mongrelfolk, each of them seemingly crossed with a variety of animals. Despite their grotesque appearance, however, she found a simple kindness in their actions. Living here, insular and cut off from the world by their looks, they seemed to rely on one another and trust each other to survive. It must have come as a terrible blow for some of their kin to turn traitor, she thought.

Ushered inside the home of Pastish, the healer, Anarya graciously accepted the offer of tea, and explained the situation, describing their symptoms. "One of my traveling companions, a wizard, and her magical companion creature, a rabbit, are ill. I've seen similar symptoms on some soldiers attacked by a rabid beast from Kenabres's sewers, so I think I can help them with the proper herbal treatments." At the offer of curative magic, her face lit up. "We would be in your debt, thank you! I would be very grateful for such aid." She smiled, relieved that the mongrelfolk were willing to help. "I must return to ensure their condition does not worsen. Thank you for all your help - these herbs will do them both good," she concluded, explaining to the healer where her friends were staying, agreeing to meet her there in the morning.

Once Tauni and Cobblepaw are healed, Anarya's going to want a scroll or two, but for now all she can think about is her friends.

Some time after Anarya visited Pastish, the dark-eyed, feather-covered mongrel woman arrived at the house where the group was staying. She stepped in slowly, clutching a scroll in her tentacle. "Chief Sul informs me you saved the life of one of our own. I have a scroll that may cure the disease and with the blessing of Pharasma, I am able to cast it once today as well. It may not work, for if Pharasma is calling her subjects home, nothing can prevent it."

She carried a holy symbol of Pharasma, [image link], but at times, her tentacle resembled this symbol as it tended to form the same shape near the tip when not holding anything. She had enhanced the effect by applying some faintly phosphorescent moss to the appendage.

Franti sighed. He wasn't tired, but felt a phantom weight over his shoulders. Perhaps it was seeing Rabbit and Rabbit in this condition. Maybe it was the state of affairs of these seemingly kind, genuinely good people. While the fool usually felt some resentment to crusaders from the Third Crusades, these descendants were removed from the atrocities of such acts. Regardless of what is was, the fool fought it, and refused to remain still.

Franti removed his hat, reattaching the bells as he spoke by the sickened wizard. His pink wig slipped, off center now, revealing some of his short black locks. "Do you anything at the market, little Rabbit?" He attached a second bell. "Soup? Bolts? Give me a list." He attached the third bell. He adjusted his wig and placed his hat on once more. "Maybe some face paint of your own. You look ghostly. Paler than than our Princess, and I doubt she's ever spent a day working in the sun." He put a hand to his chest, touching the silver scale under his armor, tapping his foot, looking every which way. "Almost as pale as Franti himself, but not quite. The golden sun of Ustalav is always hidden in murky mist. It's rays never reach Ustalav's golden son."

The fool removed his hand from the scale. He prepared a note in his journal, awaiting what was needed from anyone at the market.

When the healer arrived, Tauni looked to Anarya for a sign that she trusted the woman. Then Tauni presented her companion, Cobblepaw, stretched across her lap and breathing with unnaturally rapidity. The wizard soothed her familiar with gentle strokes along his flank. "If there is anything you can do, I would be indebted..." Despite being obviously feverish and weak herself, the wizard's only concern seems to be for Cobblepaw.

Karas took a small moment to finally clean himself. The tub in the house was small and the water was cold but he barely noticed it. Hit and cold meant little when you could place your hand on a torch and not suffer from a burn. Still the water was soothing and he worked with the soap to remove the blood from his body and hands.

The water ran red soon but he fastidiously worked to clean his silver skin. The places where Anarya's light had healed him hadn't even left a scar and he admired the healer's work. This brought his attention to the scar over his heart again. The one that, despite all efforts, would not heal. Of course the cults are this deep. Where else would they pick. No one would look. At least the mongrelmen have been killing them that's good. Makes me like these people even more.

He returned after sometime to the main room, clean and shiny, dressed in his breeches and barechested. He took a chair where he could see everyone and began to sew the holes closed in his blue tunic.

He watched with some concern as the healer looked after Tauni and Cobblepaw. With their care they should be alright. I'm sorry I couldn't keep you out of that mess.

"Hey Franti, can you do me a favor and find me a bow and some arrows to use?" he held out a small pouch of gold as he sewed.

Ellena gave Franti her list for shopping: a bow, some arrows for she and the archer, and alchemist's fire. "Thank you for picking up these items for us, Franti. I'll stay here and watch over the Mage and her animal.". Ellena normally wouldn't have much worry about something as tiny as a rabbit, but she had heard of how important these creatures could be to those who practiced magic. If it would help them back to the surface, she'd try to keep it safe too.

She watched the healer use her abilities to try to cure the two. Ellena wasn't sure exactly was wrong, but Tauni did look paler than usual. "What's wrong with them, Anarya?"

Franti looked up to the tiefling, mumbling with a faint smile. "Um, yes. Yes of course. A fool's favor." He chuckles to himself before standing resolute. The fool snatched the coins, giving them a quick count. He looked up to Karas, smiled and turned to Ellena for her list. The fool went to the market, grabbing what everyone needed. He thought about the value of the silver scale as he jingled, but quickly felt ashamed at the thought of selling it. The fool wondered what the full potential of the scale was as he arrived at the market.

Franti looked at what bows they had. "Is this a short bow, or a longbow for short people?" he asked, holding up one of them. He grabbed a second bow for himself and a third for Ellena. Looking at the collection of arrows, he picked up a common set of twenty for Karas and Ellena, another for Anevia and a set of blunt arrows for himself. He finished Ellena's request, sifting through the shops for an alchemist's fire.

-31gp for Karas, -31gp for Ellena.

He looked for a grappling arrow. His hook had served him well, but it weighed him down. Something smaller could also go further. The fool looked for a few sunrods to bring back and a vial of glowing ink. He thought that perhaps a bandolier was worth the coin. Rummaging through his backpack had cost him time before, endangering his friends. He paid the merchant with a smile on his face, eager to help out in whatever way a food could.

-45 gold total purchase. 32gp for Bow+Blunt Arrows, 1gp for Anevia's Arrows, 5sp for Bandolier, 5gp for Glowing ink, 6gp for 3 Sunrods, 1 gold for grappling arrow, +.5 silver for selling my hook. Tell me if I couldn't find any of these goodies and I will adjust.

Franti returned, two bows in hand and one at his back. He wondered if he could fire two bows at the same time. He attempted to pull back one of the strings while near choking himself with the other. He decided that he would stick to dual wielding saps for now. Franti distributed all of the items, returning whatever leftover gold they gave him in full.

He walked to Anevia, giving her arrows he bought, but pulling them back as she reached for them. "You won't shoot me with these, will you? Forgive me if I seem jaded, but my scars have barely faded." The fool grins, winking at the archer. His body twists and shrinks, once more returning to Kobold form, tail wagging excitingly. Not six second later, he returns back to being human. Franti tossed the bundle her way.

Franti put away his new items, slipping some of them into his bandolier and placing some of his old favorites in as well. The fool slung it over his shoulder and placed the silver scale in one of the compartments. "What else can you do, Li'l Silver? Maybe I'll become a rat next. Or an angel. Or a girl." Franti's face filled with glee. The possibilities are endless, he though, but the fool went on attempting to list them all anyway.

"Surely Pharasma would not wish to part these two from their bond," Anarya implored the healer. "I worry more about the rabbit than Tauni, she is strong. Please, ask Pharasma's blessing for Cobblepaw first," she said, gesturing to the rabbit.

"What Pharasma wishes is not for us to say. She does not attend to the fates of animals, but in this case, I sense a strong connection."

Saying no more, she pulled out a scroll and concentrated on the magical runes, which then flickered faintly and faded from the parchment. A glowing light, pale and ghostly, circled her human hand, imitating the holy symbol of Pharasma. Pastish reached out and touched Cobblepaw, whose whiskers twitched slightly.

Behind the Screen:
Caster Level Check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16

She then turned to Tauni, spoke, "Lijek bolest izliječiti bolest ovo pitamo da li je vaša volja Pharasma."

She whirled her hand in a spiral, the same glowing light growing with each turn. Then she touched Tauni's head.

Behind the Screen:
Caster Level Check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

She cast another spell. "Otkrivaju bolesti koje možemo izliječiti, Pharasma." Then she rose and said, "Rest. Your battle is not yet over. I will return tomorrow."

Tauni felt no different, still with a fever and general aches and pains. But Cobblepaw seemed to grow stronger and except for being weakened by the disease, seemed to be recovering.

By the time Franti returned to collect items to sell, the meeting with Chief Sul was over. Franti found all the things he was looking for, except alchemists fire. He also could not find the scroll of Magic Weapon.

Assuming you are going to wait for Tauni to recover, you'll be in the hamlet at least through another sleep cycle. Tauni can roll a fortitude save DC 12, with a +4 from Anarya's skillful care around the middle of the next day. Feel free to role-play anything else of interest while in Neathholm.

"Thank you. Thank you!" Tauni said when Cobblepaw started showing signs of improving. When she took her leave, Tauni just nodding in agreement of her return.

At Anarya's instruction, Tauni rested, snuggling in with Cobblepaw, quickly falling asleep.

As the new day dawned, presumably at least up where dawn could be seen, Tauni did not yet recover, but she got no worse. Pastish visited, as promised, and again called on Pharasma to remove the disease from Tauni.

Behind the Screen:
Caster Level Check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

The spell again did not succeed to rid Tauni of the fever. Then Karas began to manifest symptoms similar to Tauni.

On the Table:
Karas has a somewhat more difficult strain to cure. Save = 14;
Cure: 2 consecutive saves. Effects 1d3 Dex and 1d3 Con.
Karas: Fortitude: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 Damage: Dex: 1d3 ⇒ 3 and Con: 1d3 ⇒ 3

He apparently contracted the disease from the bite of the giant fly that he fought at the abandoned temple.

Karas loses 3 points of Dexterity and 3 points of Constitution. Pastish can only cast 1 Remove Disease per day as it is a domain spell. She can aid with the Heal skill check if Anarya's roll doesn't reach the DC for Treating Disease. The DC for Karas's saves is 14.

Word of the "uplanders" deeds at the fallen watch tower and their promise to speak to the leaders of the current crusade about allowing them to fight spread throughout the hamlet. People brought small gifts of food, trinkets and such.

Others began to explain the path to the surface. The only known way to get to the surface, assuming the tremors had not shut it down, was through a region controlled by the mongrelmen 'traitors' who had allied with the Cult of Baphomet. They thought it a relatively small complex of cave rooms and tunnels, but it would be well defended with perhaps 8 to 12 mongrelmen and/or uplander cultists. There was rumored to be a relatively powerful leader of the cult who lived there. Once through that complex, the tunnel reached an old section of the sewers of Kenabres.

After you've had a chance to role-play responses to this new development, I'll speed things along by making the rolls various rolls needed to recover and summarize the progress. Between regular saves and the remove disease and the aid from treating disease checks, both patients should recover. Cobblepaw recovers points based on the care given.

Avelina returned from her shopping trip weighted-down with a number of eccentric purchases, her utter cheerfulness starkly contrasting with the subdued gravity of the room full of sick people. Unlike when she blithely asked the ill Tauni to do her shopping, Avelina had not actually forgotten the state of the others this time. The way she expectently looked at her party members after showing off each item, as well as her even more extreme cheer, hinted that she thought of this an exercise in brightening the days of those stuck inside healing.

First, she pulled out a number of pairs of earplugs, then began passing them out.

"These earplugs are for all of us! They were an absolute steal, and you never know when you might run into a harpy or two!"

Next, she pulls out a modest, unadorned mirror.

"The mirror is for in-case we run into a medusa! Sadly, they did not have any mirrored shields around."

She looks at herself in it briefly, adjusting her hair as a hint to the device's other purpose. As if that reminded her, she then pulled out a small packaged kit of grooming supplies.

"The grooming kit is for me, so that any lingering doubts about who has the softest skin may be dispelled for good."

She punctuated her sentence with a glare at Franti before returning to her presentation, next pulling out a wrought-iron crowbar.

"We've already needed to pull someone out from under a boulder twice already, so I figured it was time to get something to help out!"

She set the crowbar down on the table, then pulled out a pouch that made a dull jangle.

"We are apparently facing followers of Baphomet, so I would not be surprised if we find ourselves in a labyrinth. Thus, I have procured not just one, but two! pieces of chalk for each of us to help mark our passage."

She passed out the chalk, two pieces a person, to everyone. Next, she pulled out an abacus, of all things, and presented it to Franti.

"The abacus is a present for Franti, who has so kindly taken up the role of handling our inventory. Hopefully, it will make his job a bit easier."

Five whole jars of honey came next out of the pack.

"The honey is a bit of a trick that I learned from Auntie that she said she picked up from--"

She bit her lip. That memory of her parents snuck up on her at a most inconvenient time, one in-which she needed to not show any sorrow or weakness, so she stuffed it away as fast as possible.

"--anyways, a little dash of honey can make even the most descpicably bland rations palatable!"

Followed by seven pieces of cheese of a slightly orangeish yellow color.

"And I just love cheese, but who does not? I bought one for everyone, an extra one for myself."

After handing out the cheese, she sat down with a thump and began taking ladylike nibbles of her own.

Franti promised Tauni that all would be well, but that Cobblepaw would always be safe with him should it come to that. "They won't touch our little Cobblepaw," he promised. He smiled a bit too wide, "that meal will be all mine." The fool shot backwards in laughter, but placed a reassuring hand to the rabbit when he recovered from his fit.

The fool was stunned when Avelina began to hand out cheese, mathematics assistant tools and chalk. He placed the two sticks of chalk beside his already-owned stack on ten, tossed the abacus in his bag for good measure, and snacked on the cheese. He spoke with his mouth open. "No more doubts on skin, but I have new doubts now... I've never met a holy woman who was this much... fun." He thought of peeking into Avelina's belongings, and ensuring a symbol of Cayden or Picoperi wasn't hidden in a secret pouch. The fool shook his head of the thought, finished his cheese and left the room with a quiet thanks to Avelina.

Franti rested, venturing to the other house secured by the chief. Though sleep didn't come easily when he heard Karas came down with something as well. The priest would return tomorrow, it was a waiting game for Franti now. The fool thought on what Tauni said. A good man... A good fool, maybe, but never have I heard that. She is sicker than I thought. The fool stripped away his face paint and retired for the night(?).

When he awoke, the fool ventured to the waters of the lake. He took his soap with him and bathed in the waters. He submersed himself and looked to the fluorescent ceiling beneath the rippling waters. It is rather nice here. When it came time to paint his face, he tried something different. He still painted himself with a pale gold base, but forfeited his spirals and curved markings for thicker, sharper lines. War paint for the cultists he thought with a grin. His trademark blue smile remained. The fool dressed.

She offered to lug the crowbar around as well. "I'm strong, makes sense for me to carry it. Getting it was smart...there are many uses for that, even for konking bad guys, if things get real bad."

Karas looked at the cheese and while attempting to be grateful looked very green at the thought of eating. The cold sweat from the fever made him look more shiny than normal as he stowed the gifts in his pack.

The 'cheese' Avelina bought, while nourishing and with the general consistency of dairy cheese, turned out to be a concoction made of a variety of mushrooms and other fungi. It had a sour and salty taste almost exactly but not quite unlike cheese. An acquired taste, perhaps. Ellena pronounced it 'yummy,' but whether she was putting on an act or she actually liked it was hard to tell.

As to whether the group moves on or waits for recover is up to you. The illness does not carry any inherent penalties to rolls other than the lowering of dexterity. There is no telling how easy it will be to find an experienced enough cleric in Kenebris, although in peaceful times, you can barely swing a sling without hitting one. From the description of the mongrelfolk, it should not take more than a day to get through the traitors' warren, if the fighting is successful, but the citizens of Neathholm said if you need to retreat, you are just as welcome to recover then as now. I'll make the rolls for recovery the next morning.

On the Table:

Tauni: Fortitude: 1d20 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 2 + 4 = 13

Come morning, Karas' condition had gotten no worse, although he still had symptoms. Tauni's fever was gone and she began to recover her strength.

Pastish visited again, happy to see signs of recovery on both. She prayed to Pharasma and attempted to speed Karas' recovery with a spell to remove the disease entirely. Karas felt a warm glow throughout his body and almost immediately began to feel better.

Once the spell was complete, Pastish cast a spell to detect if the disease was gone or not and pronounced both patients cured. She recommended another day of bed rest under Anarya's care, with help from her if needed, to speed the recovery of full function.

Once the news spread that the stricken heroes would recover, a guard had to be posted at the house to keep the residents of Neathholm from disturbing Karas' and Tauni's rest, so much did they want to wish the party well.

On the Table:
Anarya: Heal, long-term care, Karas: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Heal, long-term care, Tauni: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Avelina: Heal, aid, untrained: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (5) - 2 = 3
Ellena: Heal, aid, untrained: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5
Franti: Heal, aid, untrained: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
Anevia: Heal, untrained: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2

Horgus: Heal, untrained: 1d20 ⇒ 20
Pastish:Heal, aid: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

Anarya, aided by Pastish and, of all people, Horgus, who found some soft bedding which he paid for with his own money to make Karas more comfortable, the patients both recovered well after a full day of bed-rest and care. 4 hit points and 4 ability points. So once everyone had another night of sleep, the party was ready to advance.

Next post will advance the party to the first point of resistance, so make any last minute preparations and good luck! Great role playing, all!

For just a brief instant, Tauni's face contorted in horror before she understood it was just a jest. She smiles warmly again, the smile softing slightly as she drifted off to sleep again.

When she awoke feeling better, Tauni sat up slowly. She put a hand on Cobblepaw's flank below the covers. She sighed with relief when she felt his heart beating normally and his breathing slow and regular. She didn't even mind when he batted her hand away with a soft paw, protesting her disturbing his warm slumber.

She rose and looked around, asking her friends "What happened? The last thing I really remember was crossing a ravine..." Apparently the fever had interfered with her ability to remember the final part of their journey here. When filled in on what happened she'll ask to speak with the priestess who healed her. "Thank you for taking care of Cobblepaw as well as myself. The last few months have been so hard. I lost my father, my mother, and now all of my friends above may be-" She stopped, recovered, and then finished "Thank you for saving my friend. And me. I am in your debt."

Other than that, I believe Tauni is ready to go. If inks were available, she could add scrolls to her spellbook and make copies for Avelina. Some during the day, and taking the components for what she couldn't finish. The first one she would do is a scroll of Magic Weapon, which she already has in her spellbook.

Even so long after breaking free, soft bedding seemed foreign to him. He tossed and turned before finally coming to a peaceful rest in the bedding Horgus generously provided. Once morning came, and between the efforts of Pastish and Anarya, the fever broke and he was finally feeling like himself again.

He rolled out of the soft coverings, "Horgus, I cant thank you enough for finding this comfort in dark places. Let me know how to repay you." He said to the merchant with a smile.

His tail handed him his patched tunic and he pulled it over his head, once more obscuring the mark on his chest.

To Pastish he offered what he could, "And thank you ma'am for your divine gift to remove this disease." He looked over to Anarya and stammered a moment "Um, I mean.. not that your gift wasn't as good. I mean... it was... I... thank you both." he stammered out blushing.

Avelina preened at the thanks of her companions for her gifts, though the light in her eyes hinted at a more earnest joy in gift-giving.

She took special delight at Franti's compliment.

"I am absolutely delighted to hear that! I must say that I...have never been called 'fun' before. I rather like the sound of it."

Avelina then presented Ellena with the crowbar at her request.

"You may indeed take the crowbar, My Champion. It does appear rather unseemly for a lady such as myself to be carrying such a device, I suppose."

--Later--

Avelina heard Pastish's kind words, but to the young princess, the words were just as much for her as for Tauni. She held those words close, like a poor girl holding her only doll. She waved Pastish goodbye, too absorbed in that embrace to think of anything to say.

Her reverie was broken by the sight of Karas blushing at Anarya. Having not been paying attention to the conversation that led to such a display, Avelina jumped as she considered the dread possibility that he had admitted his Eternal Love for the aasimar and she had missed it. The lack of appropriate affect on the faces of the others debunked that theory, to Avelina's gratitude.

"And so, children, nine people fell to what would have surely been their deaths but for the sacrifice of the silver dragon. Among these nine were six whose destinies became intertwined that moment.

"Though different blood flowed though their bodies--including the blood of human royalty and those more humbly descended, of celestial beings and fiends--yet all carried a strong resolve in their hearts to survive and to avenge the tragedy of the attack on the city."

The storyteller narrated in detail the story, describing each of the nine and some of the dialog they shared, some based on the letters of Franti and the journals of others, some invented on the spot.

"They found themselves beset by various vermin that infest the low places: rats, giant flies, snakes, and even an unholy long-dead priest. They bested every threat that came their way, even a devious kobold illusionist. They rescued a strange creature who would make you run to hide behind your mother's skirts, but the heroes learned what you all need to learn, that appearances do not always match what is inside. The mongrelfolk had good hearts and they helped the heroes endure injuries and disease and provided what they could to supply them for the next challenge, the Lair of the Vile and the Vicious!"

An older girl at the front asked, "Does Karas get married to Anarya?" The look on her face showed that she hoped the answer would be yes.

"You'll have to wait for the rest of the story, for these things take time and there was much they had to do before they could think of such things."

An older girl at the front asked, "Does Karas get married to Anarya?" The look on her face showed that she hoped the answer would be yes.

Was that girl named Avelina, lol?

If you all are successful, the names Avelina, Karas, Ellena, Anarya, Tauni, and Franti may become quite common. Maybe not so much for Horgus.

Speaking of Franti's Letters...

Away from the sun, Franti wasn't sure if it was morning or evening. Regardless, he started one of his nightly traditions: he wrote to his distance love. His pen danced across his journal, and his smile faded to a determined stare.

He thought what to include and what not to mention. He decided not to list any of his friend's names, especially not any of the women and dared not reference Avelina. The fool didn't want his love to think he was betraying her for another noble, or for another noble's court. Franti knew not if Opaline was the jealous sort, but he did not want to find out. He prayed that when these letters were sent out, that he would finally get one in exchange.

Letter #24 to Opaline

Text:
18th of Arodus
My beautiful and virtuous Lady Opaline,

Still we are beneath Kenabres, or perhaps the ruins of it. I haven’t seen the sun for what feels like a few days. My uniform has never been in such poor shape, your poor fool has lived a pain unlike any I have felt before.

Betrayed, I was, by a woman we saved. Knocked down from rolling boulders, she sought to end me with a blade plunged into my stomach. I lost consciousness, but I didn’t lose faith, I forgive her assault. We were all under tricks of a scaled fiend, a Kobold who lurked under the city of crusaders. To think that over these years they couldn’t sanctify their holy fortress.

We found a large thorpe of strange men and women. They appear as figures stitched with the parts of beasts. While they frightened me at first, I have grown close to them, and value their hospitality. I wonder if they’ll be accepted above, if such a place still exists.

We are preparing to move forward, stalled by sickness amongst our own. In her fever, one of them called me a good person. I am still not sure what she was playing at, she was likely delusional. Still, today we advance, presumably to the surface. I need not luck, for I have you, my lady.

As the trickle of my letters crawls to a slow, take heart in knowing my envelope may contain days, even weeks, of my writings. Not a moment passes in which my heart doesn’t beat for you.
Forever and Eternally yours,
Franti

The jester practiced with his new bow, hitting his targets more often than not. He wasn't sure if this was abnormal and so assumed his talents with the bow were the norm. When each of his blunt arrows landed with a thunk, his smile grew wider. "With a bit of practice, I'll be a better shot than Anevia," he cried joyously to himself. The fool regrouped with his friends after donning his armor once more.

As it had been several days below ground, no one was certain what time it might be, but at what felt like morning, when everyone was back to full strength and feeling fit, the group met with Chief Sul one last time. The chief placed a letter in Karas' hands to deliver to the 'uplanders' with his promise of fighters to support the cause of defeating the demons.

He had Lann lead the group back to the shore of the lake and from there to a particular tunnel which Lann promised would lead to the lair of the traitors and beyond that to sewer tunnels under Kenabres. He thanked them all again and said they should return this way if repulsed by the traitors. They would offer what aid they could.

The group began to make their way along the tunnels, noting with some relief that it generally made slight but steady upward progress as it wound around for some 2000 feet.

Assuming the same marching order as before: Ellena, Avelina, Karas, Franti, Anarya, Anevia, Aravashnial, Horgus, Tauni

Behind the screen:
Trap Perception DC: 15
Ellena: Perception: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19
Avelina: Perception: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (17) - 4 = 13
Karas: Perception, 10', cover: 1d20 + 6 - 1 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 6 - 1 - 4 = 5
Franti: Perception, 10', cover: 1d20 + 3 - 1 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 3 - 1 - 4 = 0
Anarya: Perception (non-sound), 20', cover: 1d20 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (19) - 2 - 4 = 13
Anevia: Perception, 20', cover: 1d20 + 5 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (8) + 5 - 2 - 4 = 7
Horgus: Perception, 30', cover: 1d20 + 2 - 3 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 2 - 3 - 4 = -1
Tauni: Perception, 40', cover: 1d20 + 6 - 4 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 6 - 4 - 4 = 14
Franti: Disable Device: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29

Lann had warned the group that the traitors had extended a natural tunnel to connect to a complex of caves which they had developed into semi-finished rooms with doors. As Ellena began to notice evidence of pick-axe and chisel strokes, she remembered the encounter with the illusionist kobold. She wondered if he might be in league with the cultists. She resolved to keep a keen eye out for traps and soon noticed that the ground of the path ahead of her for ten feet seemed different from normal.

She called the group to a halt and once pointed out, the others could see it as well. The ground was unusually flat and covered by dust and dirt rather than mostly bare rock.

Franti examined the patch and quickly determined that it was basically a tarp stretched tight and covered with dirt. With a dagger, he cut a section of the tarp and peered underneath and determined the ground had been hollowed out for a foot down and spikes positioned to injure feet. Each spike was coated with a sticky substance.

Once exposed, the spikes were not so thick that careful stepping couldn't avoid them. The group got around this trap safely.

Rolls of 20 on Ellena's perception and 20 on Franti's disable device! Perhaps the inheritor is watching out for the group.

Knowing they were close to the lair, the group became as stealthy as they could.

On the Table:
Anarya: Stealth: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Avelina: Stealth: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Ellena: Stealth: 1d20 ⇒ 16

Tauni: Stealth: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Anevia: Stealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22

Horgus: Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Karas: Spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

As the group advanced, Ellena could just make out the passage-way widening into a small room with some kind of barricade through the middle when Avelina started to say something, "Be careful, my champion! That kobold..."

Before Ellena or Karas could shush their talkative companion, everyone, except Avelina, heard what sounded like an incantation in an odd language.

Karas:
Karas recognizes the language as Draconic and that it is some kind of spell, but he can't tell which spell or what type.

Melee begins. Neither side has surprise, so we begin with round 1.

On the Table:
Anarya: Initiative: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (16) - 3 = 13
Avelina: Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Ellena: Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 9

Three mongrelmen wait behind the barricade, two of medium size with clubs and slings, and a third of small size with a club and crossbow, in front of a wooden screen that blocks the bottom half of a door way. The barricade is made of rocks and pieces of wood. It provides partial cover. Attacks made across the barricade impose a -2 penalty to attacks. Map will be up soon after this post goes up. Good luck. I know it's the weekend, so post when you can, starting with Tauni, Avelina, Franti, and Karas.

Tauni will delay until some of the others have moved up.

That's fine. Just jump in when you want to take your action and that will become your new point in the initiative order. Since she routinely gets the highest initiative, you may want to rethink your position at the very back, especially now that you can be pretty sure there are no enemies behind you.

All: remember that you can move through allies at no cost, just so long as you end in an open square. So Tauni could take a double move to get to the front and others could move through her on their turn.
