Franti's eyes rolled in unison with Karas'. He was about to remark something back to Avelina, until he remembered the silver scale he held at his side. I might not even need Gods for that. I'll test it next time I'm alone. Franti ran up to the northern door, checking it for traps, listening intently for any large lizards, but letting Ellena open it this time.

I moved a few people around on the map consistent with statements made. Adjust if needed.

As Ellena made ready to enter the door to the north side of the room, Horgus remained at the door to the west with a torch and his rapier drawn, keeping an eye on the way in. Aravashnial positioned himself next to the other door, listening for sounds of enemies from that direction.

With everyone in place, Ellena pushed on the door. It pushed back. Something was blocking the door.

Ellena pushed and it gave a little, but not enough to squeeze through. Karas and Franti pushed as well and the object blocking the door shifted grudgingly.

Before entering, Ellena can only see that the room is about 15 feet across with another five feet or so tunneling into the wall opposite the door. There is no light in the room and no evidence of occupation. Until there is some source of light actually in the room, the squares north of the door will be normal light (2,8)to (2,11) and the squares five feet to the right and left are dim light(1,9)(1,10)(3,8)(3,9)(3,10). Everything else is dark. Also, the door is blocking movement to the square five feet to the west of the square in front of the door (1,8), blocked by whatever was in front of the door.

Upon her turn...

Ellena couldn't see why the door was stuck in the dark. Whether the mongrels were barricaded in there or whether they had found a stuck back door, she wasn't only thing she knew was that the door had to be pushed open. She planted her feet and pushed with as much might as she could muster, trying to force the jammed door open.

Franti grabbed a sunrod from his bandolier and striked it against the wall, creating a light of his own. He nodded to Ellena, waiting for her charge, dropping the rod by her feet to light the way.

Move to draw, standard to light, free to drop in Ellena's square by door. Sunrod has thirty foot light. Should help out.

I already made strength rolls to move things along. The door opened on the second attempt with help from Franti and Karas. So it's been two rounds since the first attempt to open the door.

Once Franti tossed a sunrod into the room, Ellena had the way clear to enter.

The warrior slowly strode into the now lit room. "Thanks, Franti," she whispered, peeking out from behind her shield, holding her blade high. She moved 15' into the room, and looked around for anything out of the ordinary.

Ellena stepped into the now lit room and was immediately attacked from the east side of the room.

A scythe cut deeply into Ellena's side as a woman's voice gloated, "Some crumbs fell off the feast table up above. Good, I've been hungry for crusader's blood."

Ellena 1:
Ellena was attacked by a woman standing in space (4,8), wearing a chain shirt and wielding a scythe. She has an unholy symbol of Deskari on her chest. If Ellena wants to attack her instead of moving 15' into the room, she may. If Ellena moves at all, the cultist will get an attack of opportunity since she has a 10' reach weapon. If she does move, view the results of the AOO in the spoiler below.

Ellena's breath caught as suddenly she was assaulted from her flank. Ellena only knew one direction to head when faced with an attack. She pressed forward. "It's a trap," she called out as she moved toward the aggressor.

She swung her sword with all her might, trying to slice into the crusader. "You'll taste blood alright. Your own."

The cultist tried to wound Ellena again before Ellena could close, but her scythe clanged off the paladin's armor and after Ellena's blade flashed, the cultist was wounded badly herself.

Placing her faith in the protection of both the Inheritor and the great Silver Dragon's magic (which she also attributed to the Inheritor), Avelina strode into the room.

She threw out her hand, pointing at the offending villain.

"The Inheritor has graced me with Her power! You shall fall for striking My Champion!"

Karas followed suit after Ellena and seeing the cultist he let his blood boil. The claws, horns,scales and bony plates grew into being but this time his body took on a faint blue glow as well. The feral tiefling growled and swung for the womans throat.

As Avelina entered the room she noticed there was another cultist poised to attack with another reach weapon, the glaive commonly used by follows of Baphomet. She wanted to cast a spell, but knew if she did so, she would open herself up to an attack.

Retcon: Avelina may choose a different action or cast defensively. Depending on what she does, it might cause Karas to choose a different target or course of action.

See discussion. Retcon the weapon used to attack Ellena. It was a ranseur, a reach weapon similar to a trident but with some blades on the sides of the outer points. The cultist to the east does have a scythe as a backup weapon, which is the favored weapon of Deskari, the Demon Lord of Infestations and Locusts. The other cultist, wielding a glaive, has a heavy flail as a back-up weapon.

That kobold obeyed my command earlier, Anarya thought to herself, moving to the side of the door to peer into the room. And I think I can use that magic again. Spotting a glaive-wielding cultist along the chamber's left wall, she drew herself to her full height and spoke with as much authority as she could muster.

"Flee the Inheritor's wrath, foul one!" she cried, her voice thick with magical authority. (Will save DC 17 if the target is human or a native outsider, 16 otherwise.)

Casting command [flee] on the cultist in (0,9).
("On its turn, the subject moves away from you as quickly as possible for 1 round. It may do nothing but move during its turn, and it provokes attacks of opportunity for this movement as normal.")


Tauni concentrated on the scale in her pouch and invoked its power to shield her from harm before she rushed into room. She passed closely to Karas, hoping to get all the way into the room to help her friends.

Sanctuary, DC 18 will save to attack her.

As soon as Avelina steps past the open door, she is attacked with a glaive from a cultist of Baphomet standing near the west wall.

This was the readied attack on the first target to come into reach.

The attack did not connect, however, and as Avelina cast her spell, she was cagey enough to foil any attempt to disrupt her spellcasting.

On the Table:

The cultist of Deskari barely flinched at Avelina's sonic attack.

Karas rushed in, raging and swinging his sword, but the scythe blocked his attack.

Anarya would have to move one square into the room to have line of sight on the other cultist, due to the door being propped open. But the door prevents the cultist from making an AOO and the other cultist has used her AOO up.

On the Table:

Anarya's command easily fills her enemy's mind with the urge to flee.

She will try to comply on her turn, but it will prevent her from attempting any AOO in the meantime.

Tauni slipped into the room without anyone attacking her, although whether because of the scale's magic or the fact that the enemies were preoccupied she did not know.

Franti strolled into the room after everyone else had entered. He searched for openings, but the corned foes left little for the fool to exploit. When he noticed one preparing to flee, the fool tried to stop him in his tracks with a quick swipe.

Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Moved Franti to (1,2) as there is a door open and blocking movement from (2,2) to (1,2). Also, if his goal is to block harry her as she flees, her likely path will be toward the opening on the north wall which he can now see leads to a ladder going up.

Franti stepped between Avelina and the open door and moved at the cultist of Baphomet. Although she could have swung her glaive at him before he reached her, her mental state was focused on moving away from the caster of the spell (Anarya). Franti's sap hits her for a thump against her chest.

Once everyone was in the room and it was well lit, everyone could see a line of displays along the north wall with the preserved bodies of various cave creatures: dire rats, dire bats, cave lizards, and a few others.

Narah, the cultist of Deskari, beset with enemies to close to attack with her ranseur, dropped the long weapon and shifted north as she drew a scythe, a weaponized version of the reaping tool of farmers and the favored weapon of Deskari followers.

Rather than attack with it, however, she held it in one hand, tapped her unholy symbol of Deskari, and made a fist and smiled an evil smile. A wave of negative energy coursed from her, sweeping across the room, even affecting her fellow cultist.

Ellena made no proclamations this attack. She had been bloodied and was in a fight for her life and the life of her friends. Her only goal was to cut down this infidel.

She swung her sword with everything in her.

Narah cackled as her negative energy cut through the crusaders and said, "Taste the pain of Des..."

Her gloat ended as Ellena's longsword cut through her chest and into her lungs. A gush of blood shot from her mouth instead of the name of her demon lord, and she collapsed.

Anevia and Aravashnial gasped as the negative energy reached them, but otherwise did not move, keeping watch on the other door.

Lerial tried to run to the ladder in the passageway north of the room. Franti swung at her with his sap, guided by Anarya's magical aid. She would also have to endure swipes from Avelina's mace and Karas' sword if she was to make it to the escape route.

Franti and Karas were not able to hit the cultist, but Avelina's mace hit her backside as she retreated. She climbed up the ladder out of sight of the crusaders.

Avelina grinned as she saw her mace had hit its mark, but the smile quickly fell into a frown as she saw that the cultist still stood.

"After her, Darlings!"

Her eyes widened as she saw that Ellena was wounded.

"My Champion! You are wounded! Do you need healing?"

Her hand instinctually went to her healing potion, hovering there as she awaited a response.

The wave of negative energy washed over Karas, opening small cuts and raising minor bruises, however the faint blue light over him seems to flow slightly brighter on the injuries and the disappeared as fast as the appeared.

Karas dropped his sword in his frenzy and pursued the fleeing cultist up the ladder.

Anarya marveled at Karas's new powers for a moment, and turned to Avelina, guessing from her gestures what she had said. "Worry not, milady, this one is on me," she said to Avelina.

"Ellena, step in front of the door a moment... We have no need for my light to revive this blasphemer," she said with a glare at the fallen Deskaran cultist as she stepped backwards through the door, depriving the bleeding body of her halo's illumination. Waiting a moment for the paladin to step into her light, she released the wave of healing magic throughout the chamber.

Channel Energy: 1d6 ⇒ 6

Five-foot-stepping to (0,2) and readying an action to channel energy as soon as Ellena moves into the area of her channel. The channel will originate from the bottom right corner of Anarya's square, so it will hit the entire party except for Karas and Tauni, and will miss the lizard, the cultist, and the fallen mongrels outside.

Ellena does not need to stop her movement in that square - simply being in the column directly north of the doorway for a moment, even during a move action, will be plenty. Or, we can just handwave the five-foot adjustment of position that would be necessary, considering Anarya isn't threatened and should be able to position herself as needed to exclude the fallen foes (the rules get weird when you think in terms of fewer than five-foot-increments, but it wouldn't be strange for Anarya to find an angle which includes Ellena but not the body).

Karas raced after the cultist, but when he got to the top of the rusty ladder and stepped into the narrow room, something attacked him.

On the Table:
Sewer Rat AOO: Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Looking down, he saw a rat the size of a dog and 3 others. Two were to the west of the room beyond which the room narrowed into a five foot wide tunnel, at the end of which he saw the Cultist, who was just stopping as the enchantment from Anarya wore off.

Edit: Karas can see a mongrelman with a club just beyond the cultist, where the passage widens into a room. He can't see far into the room as there is a wall just beyond the mongrelman.

If Karas wants to keep moving he'll have to move through one rat and past another, provoking AOOs. Or he can make an attack against one of the rats.

I wasn't sure if the wall would block the channeled energy, but I looked up a discussion of this question and anything that provides complete cover from the position of the channeler would block the energy. So getting on the other side of the door will prevent the cultist from benefiting from positive energy healing. But from where Anarya is standing, if the door is open, the effect would reach the cultist.

I can select which corner of my square the channel energy emanates from, and the cultist does have total cover from the bottom right corner of my square.

Karas' claws rake through the large rat but the bone-like spikes on the rat's body keep them from killing it outright.

I will have round 3 melee order, including the enemies in the room Karas is in and nearby foes. Tauni can still take an action. It sounds like Avelina is delaying until after Ellena's next turn. Franti may not be at the top of the order once the new foes are accounted for in initiative. I'll get that up later today.


"Karas!" Tauni said, startled by his sudden run up the ladder. With a deep breath and a silent prayer to Abadar, Tauni followed him up the ladder.

Is going up the ladder just a move action? And can she do it with her crossbow in one hand or does she need to sling it?

Thank you. Then Tauni can get to the top of the ladder and still have a standard action left.

When Tauni arrived at the top of the ladder, she saw Karas rip into the waiting rats and the fleeing warrior. Hoping to buy time for Karas to continue pursuit, she cast a minor spell, relying on the magic of the scale to ward any attacks while she did so.

Casting Grease, targeting the two squares that the bipedal foes are in at the end of the passage. DC 15 reflex save for them to stay standing. She is not casting defensively; she is counting on the sanctuary to protect her from AoOs.

Tauni cast her spell. The rat nearest her had not yet recovered from his attack on Karas as he moved past it, so the sanctuary effect had yet to be tested.

The cultist maintained her footing but the mongrelman traitor behind her toppled with a grunt.

Franti quickly dropped his backpack to the floor. He was getting used to such maneuvers now. The fool put his hand over his scale, taking on a new shape.

Franti's body began to shrink as his head swelled in size. Pointed, green ears pushed through the curls of his wig, and though the paints hid the color of his new face, his hands turned the color of pine and olives. Franti was around three feet tall now, half of his height merely from his large, bulbous head. When he smiled, large almost comical teeth stretched over his entire face. The fool had turned into a Goblin, and dressed as a jester he looked odder than ever.

Franti dashed up the ladder, laughing mad, finding a strange delight, a strange comfort in his new form. Song came natural, and the fool chanted as he moved about. "Hurry, hurry, pick up the pace! Says the fool with the largest face! Quickly, quickly, let me pass! If you're in my way then move your ass!"

Acrobatic to not Provoke vs. Rat CMD + 15. Not Moving at 1/2 speed: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30 Hell yeah!

The fool danced passed Tauni, joining Karas in the front line of battle. Saps in hand, the fool was ready for his foes.

Free to drop bag, Standard to Alter Self to Goblin, move to, well, move to (3,6). Dex to 20 Attack Rolls +2, smaller weapon damage die, AC adjusted to 18 (no longer encumbered), Darkvision, -1 CMD/B, +4 to Stealth from size, +1 Init. My disguise bonus to appear as a Goblin is at +17.

The Dawnflower? That's Sarenrae, not Iomedae! You need more ranks in Knowledge (Religion)! :P

Of course, little does she know, Anarya's power doesn't have anything to do with Iomedae... but that's a story for another day.

Anarya's healing light floods the room, leaving the crusaders' foes in shadow. Only Karas, Franti, and Tauni are beyond her light.

Her new initiative will occur just before Ellena's turns from now on, since that was who triggered the readied action.

Avelina dropped her hand from her potion as Anarya's healing light washed over the room. She turned towards Anarya, but her eyes did not meet her gaze.

"Oh. Well, thank you, I suppose."

She was unsure why she was so unhappy. Certainly, the demure aasimar girl's healing was a boon of the Inheritor, and she should be glad to feel it. Her gaze wandered back to Ellena. She had said Avelina could tend to her wounds later, and the thought that she would no longer have an opportunity to administer to her Champion brought her a deep disatisfaction, as though someone had just stolen something important from her.

The tangle of emotions running through the princess's mind were buried by the sounds of battle up above. Avelina turned towards the ladder and ascended with all speed, pausing for a moment to turn back to her fellow golden-tressed followers of the Inheritor.

"Come along! There are more demon-worshipping fools to slay up the ladder!"

Franti, in the form of a goblin, virtually erupted from the hole in the floor, moving past Tauni and the rat next to her with the twitching whiskers. What the other crusaders throught of his latest form is not recorded in the annals, but it must have been a strange sight indeed.

Ellena moved until she could receive the healing energy channeled by Anarya, which also reached Avelina just before she followed the others up the rabbit hole the passage to the next higher level.

I moved Ellena into the door square or she would not have received any healing. She can keep moving and get to the ladder, since the readied action is a little like a readied attack. Anarya's place in initiative moves to just ahead of Ellena. Ellena is at the foot of the ladder.

Anevia and Aravashnial, seeing the main force moving on, shifted her rear-guard position to the doorway of the trophy room. Anevia gestured for Horgus to join them for fear he might be left vulnerable.

The cultist, her form lit by a light spell on her belt buckle, glared at the crusaders but smirked that they were being held up by the rats. She calmly walked around the corner and out of sight. The crusaders nearby can hear her intoning a brief chant.

Tauni:
Tauni identifies the spell as cure light wounds.

Avelina, with vexed brow casting a shadow over her face, scampered up the ladder, pushing past Tauni, who had at this point endured more than one elbow in her ribs as she kept to one side of the ladder to let the others past.

On the Table:

As Avelina moved into the room, she felt a sharp pain in her wrist and looked to see the largest rat she had ever seen biting deep into her flesh. She shook her arm and the beast lost its grip, but not before drawing a lot of blood. Her light replaced the light that had been lost when the cultist put a wall between her and the others. But only Tauni observed the momentary shift in lighting, as the Karas and the goblinated Franti could see without the light.

Another sewer rat moved closer to Avelina and attacked her.

Its teeth were stopped by the invisible armor she wore.

From the end of the tunnel, two mongrelmen emerged into the light, squinting slightly at the bright light. The wielded clubs and slings. They were content to let the rats attack the intruders until they had an opportunity to join the fight.

Prescience 1d20 ⇒ 17

Tauni twisted, facing back down enough to call out to the others. "Rats and mongrelmen up here! Be careful coming up!"

Tauni moved out of the opening of the ladder, her confidence in the magic of the scale growing as the rats left her alone. She moved past one of the rats, leaving the opening below free and drawing her dagger in one hand as she moved.

Once she had her back to the wall, Tauni fired her crossbow bolt at the rat that had so savagely attacked Avelina and menaced the other rat near her with her dagger.

Crossbow, one handed with guidance:
To hit 1d20 + 3 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 3 - 2 + 1 = 22
Damage 1d8 + 0 ⇒ (3) + 0 = 3

Edit, possible crit
Confirm 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Damage1d8 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4

Edit, I'll substitute the prescience roll for the confirmation roll, so I imagine that will do the trick.

The shot was at rat 2. The reference to 'menacing' rat 1 with the dagger is just to provide flanking if anyone else comes up and attacks it.

I'm going to possibly have a very busy day, so I'm posting a little ahead of turn so things can keep flowing smoothly. Unless something changes down where she can see it, Anarya is going to do the following. If any foes emerge down below, or something major changes, ignore this post and I'll make another one.

Now taking up the rear with Aravashnial, Anevia, and Horgus, Anarya followed Ellena to the ladder, readying herself to join the others. She kept a nervous eye on the door to the east, sling still ready to launch at any incoming foes. She places a hand on Ellena's shoulder, giving her blessing to the paladin's sword-arm.

Move to (2,3), cast guidance on Ellena (duration 10 rounds).
