Calephe opens the door to reveal that the newest room spans half of this level of the tower. Two stone altars, one black and one white, sit at either end of this large chamber, which takes up two wings of the tower on this level. The crumbling remains of wooden benches sag in front of each altar beneath rotting ceiling tapestries. Carved symbols and writings snake along the walls. The burnt corpses of two troglodytes lie on the floor in the center of the room.

As you open the door and peer within, two skeletons wreathed in auras of flame turn their sightless eyesockets towards you and move forward.

DC 10 K. Religion:
You identify this room as a temple dedicated to Nethys, the god of magic, in both of his aspects: protection and destruction. The writings on the walls are quotes from Nethys’s holy book, and the holy symbols on each alter also belong to Nethys.

Tellerin follows after the rest of the party, inspecting the walls and floor for anything interesting as the party returns back to ascend the stairs. He gulps "I thought we'd shaken off that smell, but the way these stairs are spiraling are making me nauseous..."

When the party pushes the door open, he jerks to attention What now! Skeletons? "I know you said explore Calephe, but every door we open seems to have an unpleasant surprise!"

Tellerin steps into the room, and then, rather than manipulating his tattoos in any fashion, he laboriously casts a spell using more traditional gestures. Its clear that he's not exceptionally practiced with this type of magic, based on the way he stumbles through it.

Looking about the room, the team identifies a second pile of bones from a third flaming skeleton, and near it lies the burned skeleton of a troglodyte. The alters each have a full alter service set out, including a silver holy symbol.. it seems that the skeletons have protected this room since it was last used! The silver accoutrements seem untouched by the ages but for a thick layer of dust. In addition, a scroll case sits in the center of each alter.

"Two magic scrolls here, one for protective magic best used by clerics, a Shield Other spell. The other one seems to be for breaking things, a Shatter spell. Not sure what that can tell us about this room, but if we have an emergency we should make use of them."

Please dot in here, and add your information to this spreadsheet to help me with record keeping. All dayjobs may be rolled here, with the results posted on the spreadsheet. Glad to have you aboard, and hope yall enjoy!!

I do not have an exact date to kick off, but will be doing so in a staggered manner so that I don't have all three tables blowing up at once! Thank you for your patience.. we will get rolling soon!

|Ruins |WBGoblins|RotRL| Emerald Spire|

Just as an update, I am getting the tables going in the order that they filled, but I am going to do so in a staggered manner so that I don't have all three tables blowing up at once. What this means for you, is that you will be the last table that I kick off. I am starting the first table here shortly, the second table by the end of the week, and then it will be your turn.

The majority of the players at this table are fresh faces around here, so I anticipate that things will be a bit slower at this table. I will make some allowances for this fact, and I expect that if anyone has any questions, comments, or concerns, please speak up! I am taking on an immense amount of work running 9 games here... solely for the benefit of the four fresh faces here in this game. I want you to learn, and to have fun!

Please, if you have not already done so, check out my GM profile. There is a bit of information about me and how I run my tables, as well as links to an incredible amount of really great advice and how-to's. My first two rules are to have fun. My third rule is very simple: "Don't be a jerk". I am very open to explanation, and hope that if I should make a mistake, you don't hesitate to call me on it.. I will own it and fix it the best way possible.

I hope to have all three tables kicked off within the next week or so, so go ahead in introduce yourselves in the Gameplay thread and get ready. Thank you for your patience, and I hope that you have the best possible experience here at my tables, and with PFS.

Hi all!
Both PFS and PbP are new to me, though I've had a number of years of experience both DMing and playing Pathfinder. As a result, this is pretty exciting but also pretty daunting. I've read through a lot of the resources available on both PFS and PbP (and dang there is a lot to read) but I'm sure I've missed at least a couple of bits. Please don't hesitate to correct me if I muck something up.

No Day Job roll here (If I understand correctly, it has to be a trained skill for Day Job checks).

Looking forward to playing soon!

I'm in the same boat, new to PFS and been playing the game since last June. I am in one PbP right now, with a cleric in Skull & Shackles. I have not played any other character types, and so I'm sure I've got this bandit build all jacked up. Comments, criticisms and suggestions welcome!

Dotting In.

No day job for me.

|Ruins |WBGoblins|RotRL| Emerald Spire|

Rashid: That is something that can be handled here.. I don't know if the board mods can fix that or not. Simply dot in or post in the gameplay thread with Rashid and then they will both show up in the players tab. Once that happens, I can remove Ghilda with a simple couple of clicks!

Dolvin: No questions are out of bounds, especially here in the discussion thread.. thats why it is here! As for Wayfinder, I like it. It can be a pit picky with the maps and stuff, so I also use the apps for both google drive and slides, but it is great for checking in on the go. Between my two jobs, wife, kid, and everything else, it really helps me to keep up with things. I can do entire posts etc from there, to include moving back and forth between apps and the web (All while waiting at the kid's school for dismissal or in a physical therapy appt/ dr office with my wife). It makes reading and typing posts out quite a bit easier than pulling up Paizo on a phone browser.

Tellerin re: Dayjob: Yes and no.. although you do not have any yet, there are boons and vanities that your can pick up that allow different things. My ranger has one called "Hunters Lodge" that allows survival as a day job.. My rogue has one that allows him to use slight of hand as a day job. Other than that, you are correct in that unless you have a trait or other boon allowing it, you must put at least one rank into "Profession ___" in order to roll a day job. Honestly, half my characters don't even have them, as even with really good rolls it might add 50 or 100 gp to the chronicle.. but by the time you are rolling that high, your chronicles are already giving you several thousand gp anyway!

Rashid and Tellerin: PbP has many pros and cons associated with it, and I have found that people either love it or hate it. I hope that yall end up being in the former category! As for all the reading: don't overwhelm yourself. Everyone has an opinion, and I think we all know how that saying ends. As long as you have a good foundation in the rules (and if you don't, you will soon!) and pay attention to whats going on around you, then you will be fine. The most important bit of advice that I can give you is that you MUST find your own voice and style on the boards. Everyone does things differently and that is a good thing! During your time on the boards, look at how others formulate their posts and how they approach different issues. Take what you like and adopt it into your own style, and then use what you don't like as a guide for how not to do things.

Edit: MOST most important advice is that if you have a question, ask it!

Any other topics or chatter? I am by no means an expert on anything, but if I don't know an answer I can at least point you to someone who may!

I have found that the quality of player and the amount of help offered to each other in there far exceeds anything I have found on the regular boards.

Anyways.. Speak of the devil, and he shall appear, right? I have the first table kicked off, and the second will be kicking off here shortly (this weekend/beginning of next week). That means that you will be starting towards the end of that week/beginning of the week following.

Please make sure that your character sheets are filled out, tag lines created, and shopping is completed. If you would like help with any of this, please either ask here or PM me. Yes it can.. but you will have to unhide the campaign. Once it's hidden, then it's hidden on all fronts. The easiest way I know of undoing this would be to go to your campaigns tab and scroll all the way down. There should be a list there of campaigns where you can click to unhide this one.

Incoming PbP combat questions:

When multiple people are all bolded in initiative, and you mention they may act, do their actions resolve in order of posting or in initiative order?

Do players include temporary modifiers to their rolls (bardic performance, or the firing into melee penalty) in their post or does the PbP GM add those things afterward, as they apply?

I assume we should just move our tokens in the map linked up top if we want to move?

If we want to do something that might require a skill check, but we're not sure about (say, if we want to jump onto a nearby log but its not clear if the log is 1 ft high and can just be stepped onto, or 4 ft high and needs an acrobatics or climb check) do we just throw in a conceivably applicable skill check or do we just say what we want to do and then wait for you to let us know what to roll? This applies more generally to out-of-combat situations too.

Rashid: No worries! We were all there at one point, and that is the very reason I decided to put this table together. If we don't play then we don't learn, and I feel it is much better to learn like this than at a table full of veterans where you are stumbling around, afraid to ask questions and be the "Newb" at the table. We are all here to have fun and help each other out!

Tellerin: Lets see if I can go one by one here..
As for as block initiative goes, this is one of the very unique things about PbP, so the rules really kind of get bent here. I can not give you a hard and fast answer to this question, especially as not all GM's are the same on this point. For my tables, there are a couple of things in play. During my recap, I will generally go in the order of posts. I find that this is the most common way things are done on the boards. If player A takes out baddie A but there multiple posts attacking that baddie, I will shift your targets to the next applicable target, or will allow you to redo your turn, whichever makes more sense at the time. This is the most common way things are done around here. If there is a conflict or some specific thing that triggers it, (I can't think of an example off the top right now) then the initiative kicks in and I take whomever was first in the initiative. Basically, it is up to me that the intent of yalls posts gets resolved in the most expedient manner possible. We are not going to wait days upon days to get through each combat round for everyone to post in exact order. So... short answer is both. Generally.. kinda..

Yes. When you make your roll, include all pertinent bonuses or penalties within your roll, just as you would at a table. Provided that things do not get too bogged down or abused, I will allow for mistakes (IE you post, forgetting about the Bardic Performance, and I or someone else catches it.. it can be added in. However, if you post before the bard, without some note (I delay until xx begins to sing then xxx) you lose the benefits for that turn.

Tokens: As stated in my profile (I asked yall to check that out in one of the first posts here), you are responsible for your own tokens. If you cannot move it at the time, please ask and it will get moved for you. If you do not keep up with your token, or ask people to help you out, you get left wherever you were or wherever I place you to keep up. There are times (Entering a room or new maps, etc) where I place your tokens to start. In these times, slight adjustments are acceptable. That is the reason I ask for a marching order on the first slide of the maps.. to try and figure out who wants to be up front and who doesn't. I am not going to actively try and kill you by putting the mages up front and the fighters in the rear, but if I have nothing to go on, this could occur simply by mistake.

Skill checks can be yet another amorphous thing about PbP, and is one very big advocate for why you should be clear and descriptive with your posts, rather than just "I do xx" or a block of dice rolls. the better descriptions give me a better idea of what you want to do, so if things are wonky, I have some wiggle room to make things work within your intent instead of having back and forth posts about what is and is not possible/feasible. If you know you want to jump onto that log, you know that you will need an acro check so go ahead and roll it. The DC's for most movement based actions can be found in the PRD under the skill description. These rolls can also be used as fluff out of combat to make your RP better. For Knowledge rolls and the like, go ahead and roll what you think is applicable, but give me some other modifiers just in case. For example, you come across a creature and you want to know its weaknesses, so you give a K. Nature roll, but also write in OOC what your modifier is for.. say dungeoneering. Well, if it turns out that the creature is really under the dungeoneering realm, I have your base roll and your modifier so that I can easily tell you what you know about it.
Another example is you walk up to a door in a dungeon and you want to sneak and peek. You give me your stealth roll and a perception roll, but also toss in a disable device just in case the door is locked. This proactive posting may waste a lot of rolls on here, but it does help move things along. If there is anything specific I need, I will either ask for it or will roll for you myself. I generally tend not to roll for you though, because then its your fault if you fail, not mine! lol! (For the last year, the dicebots have actively hated on me.. its an ongoing battle!)
Short answer here is yes, give me some rolls, be clear about what your intent is, and trust me to either resolve it in a way we can both live with, or I will allow you an opportunity to change your actions.

Whew... Any other questions? That was a mouthful!!!

Thanks DevilDoc, that was a way more through answer than I expected :> I appreciate it!

@Initiative in PbP: I wanted to make sure that when firing off an AoE spell it doesn't get retconned into hitting an ally that acted before me in initiative count but posted afterwards. Glad to hear that things will generally resolve in posting order.

@Rolling math: Home games I've played in and DM'd typically had the DM adding applicable penalties rather than the player, as players tended to "conveniently forget" when penalties applied to them!

@Tokens: I read your profile, but forgot the bit on tokens, oops...

@Skill checks: Got it. As someone who is used to a lot of DM-player back and forth for skill checks, it might take a bit of getting used to.

Thanks, GM - very insightful. I'm going to add pen, ink and paper, pretending I got some before we hit the road (yeah, I'm a nerd, and I want to be prepared for any pop quizzes the PFS may throw at us).

Rashid: That is completely cool. Its when you pop in in the middle of combat with a "Hey, I forgot to pick up *this item that specifically targets this baddie* that I draw the line! lol

Tellerin: PbP is its own weird little animal, and it takes some getting used to. There is a lot more stress on player honesty, but there are also a lot more eyes on the table waiting to help correct each other. Don't hesitate to call out or question something that you see.. 9/10 times its just an oversight and can be fixed simply! If there is something wonky, I will step in with either a post or a message asking for clarification and then go from there.

The AoE spells are the reason that I waffled on the initiative order. I am not going to allow PvP, and sometimes things need a bit of reorganizing simply due to the fact that we are not sitting at a table. :-) Trust your GMs to take care of these issues, but also pay attention to the rest of the posts before you launch that fireball right in the middle of the combat and expect your party to dodge out of the way or your GM to "make it work". There is a fine line on PbP between railroading the table with your actions and being as effective as you can be. The biggest thing you can do to help is be descriptive and communicative in your posts.
For example: I post mainly at night, so in one of my faster paced games that I am playing in it is not uncommon to wake up to 10 or 20 posts. Because of this I typically offer some OOC or spoilered explanation of what I plan on doing on my next turn, with a few options such as "If the team does this, here is my reaction. If not, here is my second choice". That way the GM and other players can see what I am intending and use that to come up with a workable plan. It also helps keep the back and forth at a minimum. There are times the clarification is necessary, but it keeps things from being slowed down unnecessarily.

What does "IC" mean?

In this case, "inspire courage".

Side note: here's to hoping Janira has a wand of infernal healing (or a CLW wand) for you. Fire doesn't heal people :<

|Ruins |WBGoblins|RotRL| Emerald Spire|

Tellerin: At least in this case: Yup! I've got it covered!

Rashid: I am not sure what you are referring to, but IC can mean Inspire Courage. If you are referring to my post above, OOC means "Out of Character". In the Paizo forums, the different kinds of text means different things. Bold text is player speech while italics means that the player is thinking this, not saying it. This is generally used to flavor the RP that it accompanies. OOC text is generally side conversation speaking to the GM or other players and can be anything from explaining intent, asking questions, or commenting on current events. OOC text in the gameplay thread should be kept to a minimum by board etiquette, but can be necessary at times. If you click on the link below the submission box titled "How to format your text" [show], this will tell you how to format your text inline for the desired effect.

Thanks, Tellerin! And you too, GM! I have the "ooc" lingo down and the other text formatting - thanks! I just wasn't familiar with the use of "IC" in some rolls I saw. And, I saw your spoiler for me in gameplay - yep, I understand the stabilization roll and its mechanics. Thanks!

I don't know if I need climb checks, as I am hoping that just by holding onto the rope they can lower and raise me without chance of falling but just in case I'll roll 2. If this works then only Hskoro will need to make a check and if he chooses to take the rope with he can or make the check with the bonus from the rope and leave it.

In order to not gum up the gameplay thread too much:

@GM Thanks for the clarification about jumping over pits and taking 10. I've used that exact same reasoning in the past, but I heard that some DMs rule differently.

@Party Since I didn't have any comments on it in gameplay, anyone want to wear the cloak for now? I figured that since Hskoro is in the lead he would be most vulnerable to traps, surprise magical attacks, and the like. But if someone else feels strongly that they need it, it looks like its up for grabs.

I agree about giving the cloak to Hskoro.

Hskoro sounds good to me.

Okay. Hskoro will take the cloak then.

So Dolvin and I are at a bit of an impasse here and I'd love some input from the team if that's cool? I'm not really sure how I should go about doing this or if we should, in fact, cut our losses and move on. I for one don't care what Hskoro does with the cloak and am leaning towards wanting him to keep it. I only have 1 idea to praise Aroden, though I don't know if it would really do much. That is to see if there is any clay around and mold a small bowl to leave him. I just don't see that being enough or even if i could and beyond that I have no idea what to do. So if you have a good idea for something else Dolvin could do let me know and if not I'm cool moving on.

Well, the hint from Mr GM was very direct, and I think we can recreate all 4 murals using this model of Absalom. I feel a bit awkward making use of the hint though, since I feel like Tellerin would never have guessed to attempt any of them (especially because he knows next to nothing about Aroden, other that what Dolvin managed to interpret).

I've thrown the 3 other methods in a spoiler so people can choose not to read if they want.

Ways to fulfill all 4 murals:
We can use our writing supplies to graffiti the diorama's walls.
Plowing 4 rows should be easy too, just use an edged weapon to score 4 lines in the stone outside the city diorama.
Making pottery, or making a new statue for the diorama out of loose stones both may work.
The description of the Absalom diorama mentioned polished semiprecious stones, so you can try to just pocket the nicest looking one after uttering a prayer.

For me, I'd want to hear from Hskoro about the cloak, then regardless of how that goes, I'm planning on having Tellerin walk through the diorama and pick up some kind of ancient trinket (like a coin) to bring back to the Society.

At the risk of playing out too much information to yall, let me add my two cents. I played The Confirmation at least 3 or 4 times before either 1) A GM actually included the carvings, or 2) I played a table where this was actually figured out. This scene is very hard (for me anyways) to run on PbP simply because of its ambiguity, and from the fact that it often gets left out I believe I am not the only one with this opinion. I normally do not give direct hints, although I may make slight hints or special emphasis on something important here and there just to keep things on track or to prevent an utter catastrophe.

In this case, I find myself repeatedly giving help simply because I feel that a lot more description is necessary in order to achieve this and I think its pretty cool. I began subtly with changes to the canned text and extra descriptions, and gave more to you as it was apparent that you needed the hints. With that said, I can tell you that you are on the exact track with your thinking.. for all four carvings, although I would take the Artist a little more literally than just some graffiti.

As for the Cloak, I meant what I said Hskoro. I really did not mean to come across harsh enough to put you off, and I really hope that I haven't pushed any buttons or thrown your interest off. You play Hskoro the way you feel that he needs to be played and do your thing, confident that I am not going to punish anyone for how they role play (within Society rules, of course!!). I actually enjoy the byplay and back and forth, and although your decision does decide the fate of this conversation, it is nothing at all that is going to affect the overall outcome of the mission.

If any of my wording or posts have insulted anyone at this table or made anyone uncomfortable, please accept my heartfelt apologies and either PM me or post something so that we can work this out. The last thing that I want, especially at a table for beginners, is to leave a bad impression and I will do what I can to remedy things. This goes back to PFS rule #1, and also several of my personal rules.. have fun. If you aren't, let me know so that I can try and fix it so that you are.

I have done the Confirmation once with my 1st PFS character. We managed to solve the carvings/pool problems. I don't recall all of the solutions for it but I've refrained from looking back on it plus Hskoro is unlikely to be clever enough to solve any of them.

@GM DevilDoc

No worries. I haven't lost interest or anything like that. I'm pretty laid back and flexible with my roleplaying. I'll sometimes role play someone not very sociably adept but never to the point it hurts the group.

Ok. I was really worried that I had put you off, and didn't know if Hskoro was just being Hskoro or if my response had gone too far. Please let me know if there is anything at all that I need to address or change!

As for the carvings, that is one of the things that is interesting about this.. there are actually 12 carvings, and 4 are chosen via dice roll as being "legible" enough to interpret.. that's quite a bit of replayabilty!

GM, I'm pointing this out only to make sure I'm comprehending the rules correctly about zero damage and non-lethal damage. Here, it states that zero damage causes one point of non-lethal damage, but you said that I received a point of lethal damage. Is there another rule you can point me to? Thanks!
