That blows. The funny thing is, I was just reading a thread on Monday that talked about how vulnerable mounts are at higher levels. 3 straight area of effect spells/abilities and he was gone gone for good good. /sobs again

So I'll have to spend some time thinking about what I want to do with that part of Ishbaad's story. I actually think that will be easier to figure out than what I am going to do mechanically. Ishbaad's level in cavalier was centered around being Aoife's guardian. Without her in the story (hopefully still temporary) both the Role and the Roll reasons for having that level of cavalier go away.

Early returns on my thought process would be to re-assess Aoife's involvement in the story when we transition to book 3, and if she (Chris) is still taking time away from PbP, I may retool that level (from Damien's generous offer to change things up between books)

Would love to hear other's thoughts. I am kind of attached to the greatsword and the full plate, so I may just change that level to something like fighter instead of cavalier in order to keep the proficiencies. Story wise it would make sense, as Ishbaad's purpose shifts with the missing Aoife, so would his fighting style. Perhaps he has no interest in riding again after losing Onyx, something he felt was so strongly connected to his past transgressions and the redemption he thought he had a chance at. Perhaps that is a question he simply chooses not to answer, or address for now, or for quite some time.

Steve. I feel for you man. I once had a GM who was so renowned for killing mounts that I stopped taking classes with animal companions or mount features. I even stopped buying horses.

Anyway...

Good lesson to have learnt. I also totally support your move to swap out your cavalier class.

However, I will say that Onyx's death is a great roleplaying point. I also thought about things from a coolness perspective... and if you want to keep the cavalier class (even put some levels into it) and hold off on replacing your mount through to book 4, it will pay dividends. The megadungeon of book 3 was going to be a bad place for Onyx anyway.

Book 3 will be mostly story mode regardless, so your classes will be much less important. I'll see about running a few combats just to keep you guys used to your characters as you level up, but mostly you'll just be experiencing the important story elements of book 3.

I also hope that Chris can come back for book 4.

The megadungeon problem did cross my mind. I've already struggled a bit (even with your help in opening up the clocktower doors and such) just because a large mount is difficult in so many places. Gives me more and more appreciation for Pooka :)

Your tease is intriguing... I have to say one of the things I was kind of excited about combining the cavalier and inquisitor (other than nerfing the maxed out potential of a single class focus) is there seemed to be a lot of synergy mechanically between the two, particularly through the tactician feat and the fact that both classes have at least a secondary emphasis on teamwork feats. Having Solo Tactics and getting free teamwork feats from both classes is pretty sweet...

I will definitely keep it in mind. I really liked the theme of it when I took it in the first place, so it probably won't take much to convince me to stay with it.

It's entirely up to you. I'm just noting that something cool can happen in book 4 if you are a cavalier. That isn't to say that cool things won't happen if you're not, but think of it as a cherry on top. Oh, and if you don't like it, you can always switch out the class as you planned after book 4 is over.

Oh yea. Besides, there isn't anything to be upset about. Just wanted to make sure that was clear :)

Bummed for sure, but (as I just texted Chris) in a weird way I am kinda glad.

- It is a reminder that you aren't pulling punches. Which makes hairy situations feel way more tense, and the exhilaration of success is higher... it means more when we do something hard and do it well.

- There wasn't anything questionable about it. (which is what lead to so many hard feelings with what happened to Ibid) It was a cool, thematic, strikingly visual way for it to happen. If my character were to ever die, that is the way I would want to happen. Just part of the story.

- If I am being brutally honest and cold... it wasn't my character, it was my mount. Could have been a lot worse.

- You hit the nail on the head earlier, awesome opportunity for an RP moment, which I totally stole to paint more of my backstory picture. That part is always pretty awesome.

Anyways. I'll miss you Onyx buddy. I'll memorialize you by incorporating your antlers somehow into my pauldrons. I'll rename them the pauldrons of the bull elk.

I've assigned most of the stuff as I mentioned above. There are several things that are not assigned, and so I just assigned the sell/gold value to them.

PLEASE CLAIM ALL POTIONS AND SCROLLS!!!!

-Scrolls that Kuragin can add to his witching ways should default to him, IMO.
-Anything that we don't claim when it comes time to sell our haul in game and buy new goodies with our gold will just get sold.

There are several things that I have marked in the loot sheet that should go to Aoife when she returns.

Side note, due to the current split of gear, Ishbaad, Icy and Kuragin all get a net +2 upgrade to AC. Nice.

Another side note, Ishbaad cannot wait to don his new adamantine full plate. *giddy*

If we can get to a point where everything is either assigned or given up for party gold to split, I will 'lock' that portion of the loot sheet down and we can add whatever the gold split comes down to into our profiles for spending... whenever we get a chance to spend. :)

Most of the scrolls were divine, so not much help. And of the few arcane spells, only two (mount, reduce person) are on witch's list.

We should still keep many of the scrolls... Ice Melts Quietly in Sunlight has a UMD currently of +17... so should be able to activate most of them without much difficulty. Of course, for divine spells, he'll also have to emulate the stat, since he's got WIS8 CHA6

Hey guys, I've had a lot more time to think about Roll20.net over the past week or so.

The learning curve was and remains a steep one, but I think I have it running (on a test game) about as well as I can get it to run. Alas, but it doesn't appeal to me.

Here are my issues... and I'm secretly hoping you can persuade me not to worry about it:

  • The lighting module sucks big fat balls. It's hard to set up (having to put your own blocked lines in and all), and it has no diffusion effects when it clips one of those lines, so you end up with odd streaks of black unless you work very hard at it. At best, you still end up with hexagonal, dark, odd-shaped objects all over the map.
  • Speaking of the maps, it is like pulling teeth to get the grid lined up at times. Having to do that for every tactical you encounter is terrible. Managing it for a big map is even worse.
  • Oh, and the zoom level constantly resents and is a fiddly, fickle b%@*#.
  • The tokens just do not behave properly, even when fully hooked up to a character sheet. I have to hook it up every time (which only takes a few clicks, but still has to be done for every character).
  • Getting a monster or NPC to work the same way the PCs do takes almost as long as setting up the PCs (kind of unsurprisingly), meaning that to get the full advantage out of it (auto initiative, etc), I need to do a lot of work in advance for every encounter. You blow through most in 2-3 rounds, so it hardly seems worth it.
  • Hooking in macros to the Pathfinder sheet is like black magic. The Pathfinder Wiki documentation is way out of date with the current version of the character sheet on Roll20 (and consequently all the ready-made macros just don't work), and things don't seem to behave the way the Wiki says they should.
  • Character sheets are a lot of effort up front. Maintaining is easier, but every new ability requires a fresh macro with fresh issues to make it better than rolling on the forums.
  • We have to double maintain with Hero Lab. There are some subtle errors (most of which seem to be easy to make user errors rather than bugs) that the community talks about in the Pathfinder character sheet, so you have to double check.

There were other issues, but the above are by far and away the issues that are annoying me the most.

Unless someone can find a way to help me with the above, I'm afraid I won't be running PbP away from Paizo.com (or maybe... maybe... a Myth Weavers style site). If Paizo.com goes down again for an extended period, I'll even have a look at a new site that's come to prominence recently: pbpmap.com.

Anyway, no Roll20 for me again. Ever.

So, just retread my last post and t was a bit of a downer. So, some things to keep in mind:

  • I am still very keen to run this.
  • My current mind set with regards to Paizo.com and its server issues is to email you all and let you know I'm taking the day off (usually with a screenshot). This helps me by not being as frustrating. Even if the site seems to be back up, leaving it for a day or half a day makes it less likely for me to try again when it is down.
  • For extended downtime (like the Golem sale, Humble packs, etc) I will just stop until a few days after it is over.
  • Only if this becomes frequent enough to significantly affect my fun (and our fun!) will I leave Paizo.com for good.

All that in mind, I really want to finish this AP over PbP. The pace has waned recently. Let's try to pick it back up again and smash through to the end of book 2 so we can sail past book 3 and into some awesome stuff for book 4!

So as for Roll20 - the dynamic lighting is HORRIBLE. The one game that I did play where the GM didn't turn it off was awful. I have never ran there, but I did read a few articles about re sizing maps. There seems to be a procedure that made it seem simplistic, but again that is just what I have gleamed. The other issues I have no idea.

I will play this game on any forum. You are the GM and as much time as we have put in, you have put in 10x at least, so whatever makes you happy.

BTW, can a creature with magic immunity receive beneficial spells? In this encounter it certainly seems so... My google-fu couldn't find any definite answers, just arguments for both approaches.

I'm not arguing against GM's ruling here, mostly just curious... Enhanced ice golem is fine, but buffing up an iron golem might result in a rather challenging opponent...

Good point. I figured it could voluntarily lower its immunity (or in this case, be commanded to) in the same way you can lower spell resistance. Hero Lab threw no errors and applied the energy resistance when I put on the spell, so I didn't think any further on it (and we all know that Hero Lab is 100% reliable, right?).

However, reading on the communities seems to disagree with me in the case of an extraordinary immunity (vs a supernatural immunity).

So, in the interest of fairness... I will retcon in my next post.

Ok, so lets Math here.

I took 13 Damage from BBEDragon.

I have Cold Resistance, so I take the 2 off the top which leaves me with 11 hp of cold damage from dragon.

Then I took 96-11 = 85 hp of cold left from Protection from Energy (Cold)

So now I take 39-2=37, then 85-37=48 cold Protection from Energy left. Right?

Incorrect on the -2 before protection from energy. Protection doesn't stack with resistance, so you apply that first (until it's gone). Should be 44 left.

So then when the 44 hp cold protection is gone I have Cold Resistance (Racial 2) and Resist Energy (10 cold) so I can mitigate 12 cold damage per turn - right?

To throw another wrench in this fun Rules soup, I have Fast Healing 2. Does that matter?

That's right.

Fast healing doesn't affect the cold damage absorbed. It does help you when that runs out, though!

Just want to verify something... If I have a lucern hammer, does that give me 15' of reach when I am enlarged? because enlarged I have 10' of reach naturally...

It is my understanding that you will be able to hit things at 15-20', but not at 5-10'.

Reach doubles when you double in size, but so does the hole that you cannot hit.

Now, I could be wrong, but that's how I have read things in the past.
