Implemented the tagline for Kuragin. Not sure if I feel the alternating OOC-tags useful, but if you like, I'll keep it. Some notes: I would abbreviate "Flat-Footed" as "FF", and I would insert "+" or "-" in front of the saves.
How should the saves "against something" be shown? e.g. Dwarves have +2 (or more) saves against poison/spells/SLAs
e.g. like this: F: 2(4), R: 3(5), W: 4(6) ?
Of course it could get very complicated... Dwarven (+2 poison/spells/SLA) alchemist (+2 poison) with dragon style (+2 sleep/paralyse/stun)... :P
Or is it best to leave out these situational modifiers altogether?
But nice, I think I'll apply this to all my characters once we have the ultimate tagline! :)

GM Damo |

Thanks for the suggestions Kuragin! Hero Lab abbreviates Flat-Footed as "Fl" which is why I went for it - thought it might have been some kind of standard. What do the others think?
For saves, I'm happy to include the +/-. It's a good idea and I'm not sure why they weren't there in the first place. Consider it done - ie. I just did it (template updated).
For conditional modifiers to saves, I'm not sure what the best way to do it is. I think the taglines will get too busy with these things in them - same with things like "Perc: +8 (darkvision)". I think just leave them out, and pull me up on it if I forget to include it. Always easy enough to retcon if needed. I'll put the situational modifiers on my data bank for group rolls, and hopefully that will remind me enough.
Regarding the alternating "ooc", I find it extremely useful for readability. It's a bit of a pain to type, but that's a once-off vs continued reading ease for me. Thanks for being okay with leaving it in. :-)
Keep any further suggestions flowing! Loving the consistency. The German side of my ancestry is proud.

Some time after Coramus takes Ice Melts Silently in Sunlight as an apprentice
Coramus was been intrigued by the natural aptitude of the young goblin. He had always thought that all goblins were crude, barbaric, and vile. However, this specific goblin seemed to show far more promise that he would ever have expected.
Ice Melts Silently in Sunlight only had to be shown a formula once, and he always got it right after that. The young goblin seemed to enjoy playing around with the chemicals that Coramus combined to make his medicines... he was learning very quickly what plants or minerals to refine the reagents that they needed out of. The one thing that Coramus could not understand was that this obviously very bright goblin refused to read anything. No explanation, but whenever he assigned a reading, the goblin just wouldn't do it. The old wizard wrote it off as goblin superstition until one fateful day, when he came back from purchasing some ocher that he needed for a concoction.
On that day, for whatever reason, the always curious goblin had gone through Coramus's things, and had found his spellbook. The wizard was shocked by this invasion of privacy! Even though he hadn't cracked the book in decades, this was his personal property!
"What is this, Master?" Ice Melts Silently in Sunlight asked.
"My property... a reminder of a life lost long ago," Coramus replied, trying to take it away from the goblin.
"Why you keep this, and never use? Much power here! See, me can make extract from this, make Ice Melts Silently in Sunlight have inivisible shield against bad people who want Ice Melts Silently in Sunlight to die."
Coramus could see that Ice Melts Silently in Sunlight was looking at the page for shield, a spell that would create an invisible disc of force to protect the caster. Puzzled, Coramus asked Ice Melts Silently in Sunlight, "But how would you do that, my apprentice? That is a magical spell, and you have shown no skill in magic before?"
"Easy, boss! Just watch!" Ice Melts Silently in Sunlight went into a flurry of alchemical creation, and soon had a small flask full of a clear liquid. Coramus could not figure out what formula he had used... in fact most of the components he used for the concoction seemed quite innocent. the goblin quickly gulped it down, and handed the wizard dart. "Throw at Ice Melts Silently in Sunlight! You cannot hit me!" So, Coramus threw the dart, barely holding back the vitriol caused by the recent invasion of privacy. However, to his great shock, the dart stopped a mere inch from the goblin's chest, and fell to the ground.
Coramus was shocked! How could his protege turn his old spells into a potion like that? It wasn't possible! He had to learn more, to figure out what the youth was doing, but that required that he start studying the magic he had abandoned so long ago. Was Ice Melts Silently in Sunlight some sort of closet wizard, or perhaps a sorcerer? What other concoctions could he draft?

The "story in the back of the adventure" (foisting their fiction upon us) is actually from the point of view of an alchemist. It's almost enough to make me want to play one. Want me to send you just the story component for a read?

Coramus Thallon |

![]() |

Glad you liked it. Had a blast writing it... though I had to work to find a spell in Coramus's spellbook that an alchemist could use. I had a different idea to have had Ice Melts Quietly in Sunlight (damnit, I can't even get the name right at 10:30 after 5 beers) have torn a page out of Coramus's spellbook (perhaps Mage Armor or Enlarge Person), and use that as the spell... that'd be a reason that it wasn't in the spell book. But, since I found a valid spell (and one he'd want in his formula book), I went with it!
I can just see Ice Melts giving a puppy-eyed look at Coramus, "Sorry, boss! You weren't using it!"

Ishbaad the Chosen |

Just FYI - I by no means intended to start this campaign early. Just wanted to do the equivilant of the "bar scene" posts we have done in other games. no need to respond or kick things off, especially you Mr. GM. :) Don't feel like you need to start just because I posted. Figured I would just help set the scene...

I am a little confused by what this means... I assume that there is a bit of a summary at the back of the AP, or something? Please explain!
Plus, as long as it isn't spoiler-y, I'd for sure enjoy reading it.
Another FYI - this is my first attempt at an alchemist... so will be interesting. Still not 100% about the build.
Finally, remind me that I definitely owe you at least pint at GenCon, with all you've done for us! You've been amazingly generous!

![]() |

Quick note, as I am working on Ice Melts Quietly in Sunlight... apparently there is a "variety" of goblins called "Snow Goblins" in the Irrisen, so, I am going to slightly change him to change his skin color to light blue.
Also, of note, at least in part due to Coramus, Ice Melts Quietly in Sunlight can actually read. He will not admit it, though, as he is pretty sure that writing will cause a person's soul to be captured. So, he will probably never write himself, except in his particular method of pictographs and the like.
I'll have him finished up soonish.

GM Damo |

This one is about an alchemist who finds himself in Irrisen. I can send you it if you like.
@Everyone: I'm really loving the depth of roleplaying that is going on on the gameplay thread. Well done for picking it up! Jorvik and Kuragin, please do let me know if you need anything further from me before you can jump in - but please do feel free to do so!

Ishbaad the Chosen |

Just wanted to mention, in case you didn't catch it in my wall of text - I tried to tie Jorvik into my latest post. I don't want to force it, but we have to get the band together at some point :)

Jorvik_RoW |

Sorry, I have been severely neglecting this thread. I will get on board as soon as I get my feet under me. Having a bit 'o writers block on how I want Jorvik to 'be'. Each and every one of you have created such dynamic characters, I even do voices in my head when I read your posts. If inspiration doesn't hit by the weekend, I may have to take drastic measures.

Ishbaad the Chosen |

No worries Jorvik! Don't force it. I just wanted to open a door for you, don't push through it if it doesn't work. There will be other opportunities...
And now I want to hear what your voice is for Ishbaad.... :)

GM Damo |

Jorvik, don't feel pressure. This game isn't started yet. You and Kuragin both have a decent backstory excuse for turning up late to the party (so to speak).
As for inspiration... I've found that something as simple as a profile picture change can help. I was seriously considering it for Methodios, until I remembered Zarta Dralneen! Your pic is perfect for a northerner skald, but may not speak over much to you of depth. You can always change it back after the inspiration hits. ;-)
I can see the headlines now: "John does Ishbaad at GenCon 2015". Can't wait!

Kuragin Kseniya |

Sorry, I've been neglecting this thread also. Partly on purpose, so I can better concentrate on the other games...
Tomorrow I'll be sitting in a train for 6-7 hours so I'll have plenty of time to pick this up.

Kuragin Kseniya |

It is already a late night when Kuragin reaches the portal. The forest is eerily silent; wind does not rustle the branches, no animal sounds can be heard. It is only the heavy breathing and squeaking of snow beneath the man’s boots that break the silence. Kuragin tried to pack lightly, taking only the minimum necessary, but the Jadwiga is used to have servants around, and therefore never had to really carry anything in his life. The backpack feels heavy, the straps biting into his flesh. The whole trek has been a very unpleasant experience, and Kuragin is starting to have second thought about the whole affair.
Why, oh why, did I not take a slave with me.. But he already knows; it would have been too risky. He had to escape quickly, and no words could leak to the others. So he alone, facing the unknown world… This thought is interrupted by a resentful sensation. Kuragin looks around and after a while spots a small ermine running in the snow, close by. ”Ah, I am sorry, Pushkin. I am not alone, I have you with me. You are most correct in that. Come then, keep me company,” the Jadwiga says, kneels down and reaches out his hand. The familiar quickly runs along the outstretched arm, and climbs to a pocket where he keeps his nest.
Kuragin stands in front of the portal, gazing it with awe. Or fear - he doesn’t really know how to feel. ”Well then, friend… Say goodbye to the homelands, we step into the south,” he whispers, closes his eyes and steps into the portal. His stomach lurches, but his feet connects to firm ground. Kuragin opens his eyes, and … is immensely disappointed. Ice and snow everywhere! Did the portal not lead to south after all? Is he still in Irrisen, no closer to his escape?
However, the little details give it away. The trees are different, the stars in the sky are in strange positions - he did travel a vast distance after all. Maybe this is south, but why there is snow everywhere? Southlands should be land of summer and warm, not cold like home. This time it is Pushkin who realises it, the cold is emanating from the portal - the portal is spreading the winter to the south. Kuragin didn’t pay much attention to this, cold is something he embraces, it is a friend - not an enemy. But does it mean to have the winter spreading here..? What is going on? He has to tell someone about this… And so the witch and his familiar start moving south, in hopes to find civilisation.
I wasn’t sure if Jorvik came through the portal or just walked to Taldor, so I didn’t include him here
Ok, next post in gameplay...

GM Damo |

Hey all, so I'm getting things going for this game now. I've noticed that not all of the taglines are 100%.
Aoife:
- Would you mind having a separate tagline for when you are raging? Just reserve the normal and raging taglines on your profile somewhere so that you can copy-paste quickly when you enter rage. If this is too onerous, leave as is.
- The "Pronounced Ee-Fa" is great for now, to help folk out with their mind-voice, but it's pretty big. If you really want to leave it, I'll be okay with that. Otherwise, though, perhaps remove it after the first week of gaming?
- I think your "active conditions" ran out of space. You've got an unclosed "ooc" and the "none" is missing. Try spreading your tagline out some more over Race, Classes / Levels and Gender.
- You need to add in hero points! ie: Hero: 3/3
Coramus:
- You need one! Tagline template is here.
Jorvik:
- You need to add in hero points! ie: Hero: 3/3
- A tiny thing, but your tagline doesn't need to be bold. It gets bolded automatically when it appears as a tagline, and looks a little out of place on the Character listing. This is being so picky that it is purely my OCD compelling me to write this. Feel free to ignore.
For the others, and on the whole, awesome work with the taglines! I really appreciate the consistency - it helps me so much as a GM.
No doubt I'll be making some more book-keeping posts over the coming day or so. Please do feel free to ask any questions you have before we get started.

Ishbaad the Chosen |

I love the name for this thread....
-Posted with Wayfinder

GM Damo |

Thanks, Ishbaad. Yeah, I remembered the "Misfits" name and decided to include it in the title to help us remember.
So... who's ready for some Winter? It's not coming, it's effing here!
When I get a little time, I'll kick things off. Feel free to finish of your prologue posts until then. Don't worry if your character isn't 100% (though you've had plenty of time), we can get that sorted in the first few days if you need to - so just let me know.
I'll start getting my "stat database" together once the characters are complete... but all you need is a name and an outline to start roleplaying!

GM Damo |

Okay everyone, I'm very excited about this one! Settle in for the long haul.
Some reminders:
- You have hero points. Let me know if you need to know more about these (ie. if you don't have access to the APG).
- We aren't playing PFS. This means so many things, but primarily I can hand-wave stuff, modify the adventure, add stuff in and generally be a free GM. And I still get to hand out chronicle sheets! Mmmm.
- I will be adding about 1 to the CR of any "main" encounter you run into, in order to account for the party of 6 (rather than have you leveling less often). I will also be adding about 50% to the treasure hauls to make up for this.
- Speaking of treasure, I will (eventually) start a treasure tracker spreadsheet. I am assuming group loot for anything someone doesn't find individually useful. We'll try to be sensible about what happens when that person sells items they've been using and I'll try to keep you all roughly even. You will also need to sell your junk in-game and buy stuff in-game. I don't want to roleplay every transaction, but you will need to find a village/town/city of appropriate size with the right stuff. Or make it yourself. Or commission someone to make it. You get the picture. Ultimate Campaign has some nice stuff to do with using diplomacy and appraise to get better deals. These rules are 100% in effect if you choose to use them.
- I'm not pulling punches. I'll even be putting on the knuckle dusters. My aim here is to challenge you. You have hero points and the rebuild rules (see my early discussion posts) if you need them.
- You will level up when I say you level up (which will be at the "marker" points in the adventure where they "expect" you to be a certain level). I will not be keeping track of XP. To keep things flowing, I'll try to tell you to level up during low-combat times. If you haven't leveled up your profile, all you get is your hit point allotment. The rest of your stats stay the same until you get your act together.
- Hit points are not rolled. You get half maximum, +1 (same as PFS).
Well, that's about all I can think of for now, boys. Meet up in game, make some gathering rolls and let's get this bad-boy started!

Ishbaad the Chosen |

GM Damo |

Hey guys, I've got one or two more rumors to insert, but the major ones are there. I don't want you to feel you're being rushed, but without a common Venture Captain to bring you together, this kind of situation (first introduction) could really drag out over PbP. I know the AP will likely take over a year (probably two) to complete, and we don't want to rush something so important as how you got together... but by the same token, if I don't kick things along from time to time, it will take even longer than that.
So, that said, my planned approach will be to move you along and make some basic assumptions about your characters (eg. since your character is made for this AP, s/he will bite on the main plot hook) in order to do so. While I'm moving things along (I'll really try for only occasionally) do please continue the introductions. That way, you get to know each other organically while we're still making progress on the AP.
Sound fair? I'll give you until around lunch time on Monday to complete the bar scene. If you haven't moved on by yourselves (which is fine) your conversations will continue as I give you a gentle push over to your next plot point. You can always flashback if you want to have covered something at the last location / time. I'll be even less precious than I was before about retro purchases, buffs, preparations, etc. Please don't feel you're being railroaded or trapped.
As a completely different thing, who would be interested in contributing to a Reign of Winter: Misfits Unchained Wiki? I'll host it and will add to it from time to time (largely with NPCs and images). You can maintain it as kind of a player journal.
Finally, I've done up a loot spreadsheet. You may have seen it linked in my tag line. Please have a look. Your feedback is most welcome. If you have seen or used a better way of doing loot (in any format) I am more than happy to change things up.

![]() |

The loot spreadsheet looks fine. that's pretty much the way my regular IRL group does it as well. Works for us.
We can refine it as we go, as well. For sure!
As for a wiki, that'd be cool, too.

Ishbaad the Chosen |

A wiki would be new to me, but I would be interested in trying it out. Loot sheet looks good. I've always been in favor of a system where players get the stuff that is useful to them without making a big deal of "buying it" out of party treasure. What benefits one likely benefits us all.... We can pretty easily figure out how to split things up, and I trust our GM to keep us all properly geared/wealthy.

1 person marked this as a favorite. |

I am for the wiki. I have been neglecting this thread, and I am rereading and finding myself a bit lost from time to time. Being drunk doesn't help either.

GM Damo |

Heh. I got so excited about the Wiki, I just put in some Photoshop miles to give our AP an official logo. Why? I've been wanting to get back into Photoshop (proper Photoshop, not just extracting other people's images from PDFs) for a while now, and this inspired me.
Feedback on the logo is most welcome - I'm happy to tweak. I'm not sure if I'm capable of tweaking it, but I'll try.
Now I just have to make that "row.wilmann.com" URL actually exist and point to the Wiki! Then I can do some mad styles.

Jorvik_RoW |

Is it just me or does the smoke in between the Reign and Of look like a phoenix or a hammer head?
Very cool indeed!

GM Damo |

Hey all! The Wiki is up and running. I've spent most of my time getting my dev environment back, and have had precious little further time to do more than put up a rudimentary skin (that will probably now outlast the campaign), some more Photoshop stuff (not a lot, just a logo and a favicon), a brief message on the main page, and user accounts for all of you to edit the wiki with!
When you have the notion, head here:
To login, click the "Log in" link at the top right.
Your username is your character's exact forum alias, spaces and all - (ie. Aoife Limerick, Jorvick_RoW... and Silbeg is gonna love logging in). This is to keep it consistent and also to make it look like the actual characters are editing the pages. Thought it might be cool. My username is GM Damo, naturally.
Your password is the real first name you've been going by (ie. what we call you), all lowercase.
If that's all too confusing or if you otherwise have trouble logging in, send me a PM and I'll sort you out with explicit instructions.
Feel free to start editing, and I'll try to inject some content and structure over the coming few days!
Enjoy.

Something tells me a certain GM is getting back at me for a rather long name.

Something tells me a certain GM is getting back at me for a rather long name.
Not at all. Just click "remember me" or whatever it is called, and you should be fine! I love the Pratchettness of your name. No issues at all.... except when I post on the iPhone.

GM Damo |

Thanks for getting a start on the Wiki guys. I have to say that I'm totally loving how Ice Melts Quietly in Sunlight is behaving. So fawning - it's totally the way a good goblin should be. The anarchist pyromaniac just wouldn't work.... but the eager to please pyromaniac - now that's something! ;-)

Ice Melts Quietly in Sunlight wrote:Not at all. Just click "remember me" or whatever it is called, and you should be fine! I love the Pratchettness of your name. No issues at all.... except when I post on the iPhone.Something tells me a certain GM is getting back at me for a rather long name.
Already did that.
For your phone, you should create a keyboard shortcut. I did!
Say, since you all are far more familiar with Hero Lab than I am (damn it, I bought way too much of that crap today) -- is there a way to tell it that you can get a bonus feat, or that the GM has allowed a specific language?

GM Damo |

Under the personal tab in Hero Lab, click "add permanent adjustment". Fears are definitely there, and languages probably are, too. Otherwise, I will allow a free skill point in linguistics (skill point adjustment is definitely there) so long as you promise not to use it (unless you spend ranks of your own).
As for shortcuts... I had a shortcut, but syncing my iPhone with my new computer deleted all of my keyboard shortcuts for some random reason. It may have been the upgrade to 8.3, though, which happened at around the same time.

![]() |

That worked for the language. Thank you!
Not working for the feat but I will continue playing with the UI, or I might send you my .por file, Damien, to take a look at.
Just makes it less annoying not to have all the errors. FYI - I did buy a rank in Linguistics, anyway, but good to know where this is!

Ishbaad the Chosen |

I'll get a post up here as soon add I can, should have some time this morning in a bit
-Posted with Wayfinder

GM Damo |

Thank you to Ice Melts Quietly in Sunlight for getting things kicked off with a bang! You'll see if I haven't got to the gameplay post yet. Got much data-banking still to do (totally forgot about it!).
Also, I'd like to agree on a marching order. Doesn't matter this time around, but if I ambush you it's handy to know (also handy for starting positions on these tactical maps). To make things easy, I've put a proposed one on the Campaign Info tab. Let me know if you want to be moved.
I'm going to do what GM Silbeg does with the tactical maps and just keep the same one. This should make life easier for all going forwards. Do let me know if you want me to continue making multiples instead (for posterity, etc).

Coramus Thallon |

Any chance we can get Ishbaad in the back so we aren't quite as squishy if someone jumps us from behind?

![]() |

For sure, you'll see that Ice Melts Quietly in Sunlight is going to be very impulsive for some time to come. So goblin-like he is

GM Damo |

Up to Ishbaad on the order thing, but I'll happily change him around for you. Mostly, danger comes from in front, but I get it.
Ice Melts Quietly in Sunlight's approach is reminding me so much of Lort.

![]() |

So, I have to apologize to Jorvik (and everyone else that will get bombed by Ice Melts Quietly in Sunlight), because, in character, that's what he'd do.
In this case, it would probably be better than letting Jorvik get chewed on.
I am sure that Coramus will discuss his control, later, and he'll learn to control the bombs (Precise Bombs) before making the booms bigger (Explosive bombs).

GM Damo |

Between poison and rake, yeah, being tossed away because he's unconscious is way better than what Jorvik would otherwise have suffered. Of course, neither character knows that!
Also, this ain't no PFS game, fellas. The chains are off on all kinds of things. Including Player vs Player.
Do try to remember my #1 rule, though: have fun. Seems like you are!
Sorry, Jorvik - I know rolling 1s and being unconscious isn't much fun. I can't help the dice rolls. :-(

Jorvik_RoW |

Where is Xull when you need him?
FYI - unconscious and still posting more than some. Who is not having fun?
Ice Never apologize for in-game happenings. Now go post Z'hor'll so I can kill him and complete my revenge ;)

Aoife Limerick |

So, this could be a bit tricky if we don't have healing resources yet. Aoife doesn't have a way to heal and also doesn't have enough cash to (on her own) buy potions or wand. She does have 12gp to pitch in toward healing supplies though. Anyone else have a way to heal, or do we want to sell some of the stuff we found back in Heldren and try to pick up a potion or two?

Jorvik_RoW |

I have 2 spells per day, and CLW is on my list Not a lot. Heading back to town might be a good idea.
