I decided to depower my mirrored sunglasses a significant amount and make a mini-warden's sword. I modeled it after the example sword, but less powerful. Pretty sure it's right. Also added Weapons skill at Average, reflecting him training with Ax and Gabriel after becoming the Iron Knight.

So I've been thinking recently about how many awesome character types you can make using the Dresden Files system, and I came up with so many cool ideas I couldn't resist
Ryuko's Gallery of Amazing Future Characters
Trouble: THEY'RE AFTER ME GOLD!
Other Aspects: CHECK HER OUT, CAN'T RESIST A CHALLENGE, THE RULES DON'T MATTER I'M RICH
Important Skills/Stunts/Powers: Resources, Pilot, Driving. Max needs the money to get his jetskis, cessnas and ferraris, and the skills to be amazing in them. Something to increase his resources even further with regards to fun items.
Quote: "What? Look, if you don't like it, you drive. Oh wait, you drive a station wagon. So shut up and let me do whatever the hell I want in my Benz ok? If I wreck it we'll just go pick up the Mercedes."
Trouble: SOMETIMES A LITTLE IS NOT ENOUGH
Other Aspects: I MAKE THIS LOOK GOOD, WAIT I HAVE A CONTRACT?, BANDMATES UNITE!
Important Skills/Stunts/Powers: Perform, Empathy, Deceit. Jack is only as good as his playing and his ability to convince the fans they're important to him.
Quote: "I took four girls to my trailer last night and I'm still Hungry. You really want to cross me right now?"
Trouble: OH COME ON, I'M TRYING TO RELAX
Other Aspects: MY FAVORITE LEATHER JACKET, I LOVE TO FLY, WHAT WAS THAT? I WAS DISTRACTED
Important Skills/Stunts/Powers: Deceit, Athletics, Fists. David is a fairly typical teenage athlete, running, lying and occasionally fighting (just don't tell anyone he flies too). Wings and Claws for his razor-sharp wings. Feeding Dependency for fresh meat, affecting his Inhuman Speed. Maybe Inhuman Toughness with a Cold Iron catch later on.
Quote: "Is it bad that I'd really rather fly to the store than drive? Driving means I have to pull out the keys and fiddle with the radio and worry about other people. Ok yeah, I can't get seen when I fly but..."
Trouble: DON'T PISS ME OFF, OR YOU'RE LITERALLY DEAD
Other Aspects: TOO FAMOUS FOR LOW-KEY, I NEED A DRINK, CRAPPY LOVE LIFE
Important Skills/Stunts/Powers: Might, Fists, Athletics. Vincent can practically toss cars when he gets the steam in him, and he was a fighter even before the accident. Inhuman Toughness and Strength with Feeding Dependency. Stunt to increase Might for breaking or throwing things.
Quote: "I know I can't do this forever. I've heard there's programs for people like me. Fellowship of St. Giles or some such, but I want to at least finish out a season or two. Who says I have to just give up because that dude went crazy and bit me? I can control the hunger for awhile. I'll be fine."
What about you guys? What other characters have you thought of that you haven't gotten to play?

hey just checking to make sure you got my post, I'm actually starting to feel better...
Yeah, Dresden Files is an amazing system and I want to run a Star Wars game using it. Aspects are awesome, and If a light saber isn't a DMG:4 or 5 weapon, I dunno what is...
Force powers as stunts.
The refresh system works to balance the jedi and non-jedi very well.

That would be cool -- a John Taylor-like character, I mean.
I started reading those to fill in my time while Jim writes the next Dresden novel... They're generally pretty good, Ryuko, though they can feel more than a bit formulaic if you read them all in quick sequence.
In terms of your other question, this is the first character I've ever gotten to play in this system. :) However, I did have a few other ideas, like:
Real name, Charles Monrad. He sold his soul for rock and roll. Literally. And now he's trying to get it back.
Trouble: ON THE HIGHWAY TO HELL
Other Aspects: ON THE COVER OF THE ROLLING STONE, MY BAD REPUTATION, STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN
Important Skills/Stunts/Powers: Presence, Resources, Perform. Supernatural Ego (think supernatural toughness, but social); Wail of the Banshee
Most of the Maltese Falcon story was true -- except the ending, and the fact that the bird's value wasn't it's wealth but, rather, ability to grant a wish. Chandler swapped the real bird he'd recovered for a decoy, and then made a wish on this thing that dreams are made of. He's still a fedora-and-trenchcoat wearing private dick from the 1940's.
Trouble: BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR
Other Aspects: HARD-BOILED? TRY PICKLED!, DO YOUR WORST -- IT'S NOT LIKE YOU CAN KILL ME, DAMN KIDS WITH THEIR NEWFANGLED WAYS
Important Skills/Stunts/Powers: Investigation, Guns, Stealth, Burglary, Alertness, Mythic Recovery (Catch: Spirit Magic)
Gunther's a minor talent/focussed hot-shot electricity-channeler with a gift for disrupting electronic systems -- especially games and security systems.
Trouble: CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!
Other Aspects: HACKED MY WAY THROUGH IT, JUVY RECORDS ARE SEALED, HARD-CORE GAMER.
Important Skills/Stunts/Powers: Conviction, Burglary, Scholarship (For Computers), Hacking Stunt, Low Discipline, Channel (Electricity), Hexing.
Quote: "Hold Up! A video poker terminal!"

The john Taylor books are ok.
I've read the first 4 or so. I loved it at first, actually thought it might keep my fix going til the next dresden novel. :)
Trouble is as stated above. They are quick reads, and if your a voracious reader like me, they start looking pretty cookie-cutter if you read them one after the other. The first book is a great start though.
I've also read the first few Nightside books. Very different, fun to read. harder to predict. I recommend both if your at all interested.
:)
Wow, nice PC concepts guys, I have enough trouble keeping up with my actual PC's, I don't have time to make others! :)
DSXM, since I don't have the rule books, can you or one of the others help me out with the 'Fae Illusion' I'm using? I haven't been doing stress, (and I'm still fuzzy on how that works, since I have no focuses or anything to boost my illusions)
I guess what I'm asking is, does Danny need to keep up with stress from using Glamours? (the power description that I have is very non-informative on the subject) :) Or shall he just keep singing, and hope that he can roll high enough to keep others fooled?
Tilnar |
I don't believe so -- a spellcaster would need to worry about it, potentially, based on how many shifts of power we pumped into a glamour (something Kenneth can't do with his limited casting), but I believe if you take the glamour power, it's just a straight-up Discipline or Deceit roll to make it happen -- especially since you're rolling Discipline to make it happen (which is the "control" one).
(Whereas, a veil for a spellcaster is a sight-block, we pick the power level from what our Conviction can give us but then need the Discipline to control the power.)
At least, that's my read.

hehe you guys are fun; yep; nightside is great; need to read the most recent one, think it is called bride in bike leather or something similiar
hehe Axi; like most old soldiers, not that he looks old; waxes maudlin and chatty with food and drink. Having been a soldier and in social situations like this; I think I can use my empathy to flesh it out in character hehe
DSXMachina |
About the plot line, how linear/convoluted do you want it? I tend to have a lot of side orgs & side-quests. This can be hard in a pbp to keep track (see Campaign Tab).
For those from Act 1 - more or less linear?
RE: Nightside, sounds interesting had some friends recommed it to me. Deathstalker was great just got a bit too much. Every bad guy leads to a worse threat.
Grillan Avaruvex |
I'm good with convoluted plots!
Side note: if Grillan making his comments where he guess other people's meaning or intentions comes off as arrogant, it is intended. But if it starts to irritate people, please let me know and I'll try to tone it back.
Kenneth Evander Finley |
As long as they're not so twisted that they become impossible to follow, I'm good with it -- especially if you're suggesting interweaving plotlines - because in the real world, things often do coincide or overlap. (Plus, that's the sort of thing that tends to allow all characters a chance to develop/shine)
Ragadolf |
First, kudos to the GM, I don't know how you manage to keep it all together. I'm already getting confused with all of the possible plotlines. :) (But that's a good thing!) :D
Thanks for the Illusion tip. That's the way I'd been playing it. (No ability to 'pump' the power, other than tapping aspects. Just 'how good can I convince them?' performance/deceit check.)
GM- I guess get as convoluted as you feel like dealing with! I don't things dragging out sometimes. (especially when I get busy and it's hard to post) Especially when the writing's as good as it has been lately!
All- Keep up the good work! I feel like my writing's gotten a little dry and predictable lately. Make me work for it, Give me something to aim for! :D
Grill- I think your ok. ALthough I appreciate you asking! :) Have fun!
Are there any 'benefits' from reaching a major milestone? Other than regaining all of your Fate points I mean? (I have GOT to find a copy of the Dresden RPG book!) ;P
Tilnar |
A minor milestone lets you do one of:
- Switch the rank values of any two skills, or replace one Average with a new one
- Change any single stunt for any other stunt
- Purchase Stunts or Powers, if you have refresh available and it makes sense, IC
- Rename 1 aspect, as appropriate based on story events
A significant milestone does the same stuff as a minor, plus you gain 1 skill rank.
A major milestone does the same stuff as a significant one, but it also gives you:
- Ability to clear out an extreme consequence slot
- 1 additional point of refresh
- Ability to pick new stunts/powers, as appropriate
Aximeus |
so we get to add a -1 refresh, so I would like to put my:
-1 Refresh: Supernatural Sense
. Tremorsense (see in area but not through walls)
so if even completely dark; I can feel someone moving if their touching the ground and feel people moving around me in contact with the ground as my character grows more in tune with his mother Gaia; or mother earth
Ragadolf |
Heh, when I first introduced my (now not-so-little) little bro to RPG, he played a Star Wars bounty hunter that picked up EVERY single weapon he could from those we fought. I made the mistake of commenting that he might be going a little overboard. The then 12-yr old looked back and replied without thinking;
'There's no such thing as too much firepower'
<sniff> I'm so proud of my little brother,... :)
But if I were your PC's I wouldn't celebrate just yet. When my old DM threw 'only' 3 monsters against our group of 5 or 6, we started looking for the exits! :)
Grillan Avaruvex |
The odd thing is that I hadn't even been thinking about Grillan doing something like making that offer until the very moment I typed it, which I only did because I wanted to make the question about how the white council expected to be backed seem more like a rhetorical thing, where he wasn't really expecting an answer.
I like it so much after writhing it that I don't know if it could have been better if I had planned it. And it made how openly he's been speaking to people make a lot more sense... He didn't hold back much with becca, because he thought she was beneath him, I knew that going into it. But I kept having a nagging feeling that he was being too open with Jericho and Letitia when he talked to them. But of course, if he is thinking of them both as potential recruits and partners, he's doing it because he wants them to trust him.
Now if only I had a good idea for what his endgame if Letitia says yes should be.
