Remastered Kobolds

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

So, the Player Core 2 blurb lists kobolds as one of its ancestry options. But does anyone know what the plan is to differentiate Paizo's kobolds from WOTC's? The idea of 'kobolds' as little dragon guys is a DnDism, as far as I know - in folklore they're house goblins or maybe ship/mine spirits. I've been assuming that the kobolds are in PC2 so they can have new abilities for the four new dragon types in Monster Core, but will that be enough of a change from the DnD kobolds? Or are there plans to change more to make them more obviously different, like other ancestries have been changed?

See this post from two weeks ago.

Dragon-themed kobolds are already Paizo's take from PF1 (Kingmaker AP).

My wife saw those kobolds saying you no take candle and just abandoned the quest to go into the mine. She just wasn't going to kill them.
She was like they think I want to take their candle, I dont want to take their candle.

Given that the dragons they'll be themed around are Paizo's IP, I'm not too worried.

DnD kobold are sometimes depicted as idolizing dragons. Being dragons is a little different.

So, in a recent interview with Luis Loza (I think on the Althaven youtube channel?) they actually discussed this a bit. I watched it 2 to 3 weeks ago so I might misremember details slightly.

Aesthetically, Kobolds are keeping their 2E appearance where they look like they are a horned tegu lizard. Like this guy. Culturally they are still gonna be little trap dragons who live in close knit tribes, steal, and worship big monsters (but not necessarily only dragons anymore).

Draconic Exemplar rules are going away or being changed to no longer be linked to dragon type. Now tribes are linked to the 4 magical types (divine, primal, occult, arcane) just like the 8 new main dragons are. So, you wouldn't be a Green Dragon Kobold anymore, you would be a Primal Kobold with whatever rework powers that entails. Tribes tend to serve or worship entities related to their type, so a Primal Kobold might serve an Adamantine Dragon, Horned Dragon, or even a strong non-draconic Primal entity like an Arboreal or Dryad.

Scale colors are now decoupled from type, unlike the old Draconic Exemplar thing, where green dragon kobolds were green. It's not like all primal kobolds are green, all divine are red, etc. This theoretical tribe of Primal kobolds would have a mix of scale colors.

I actually guessed that kobolds would be emphasized as the creation of the Vault Builders and say goodbye to their draconic elements in Pathfinder Remaster. For example, after excavating one of the truly ancient ruins in one of the great vaults of Orv, some kobolds rediscover their true origin, that they were created by the Vault Builders and have nothing to do with dragons. This truth spreads like wildfire, eventually making kobolds rise in the worldwide rebellion against their draconic masters. Literally all true dragons are brutally killed and their eggs are ruthlessly smashed during this rebellion, resulting in the complete removal of chromatic and metallic dragons from the world of Lost Omens. :)

There are so many implausibilities in that story. It's the kind of thing that would only happen in a story where the author has a real axe to grind and is willing to largely ignore realism to make it happen.

I just hope kobold feats stay broadly similar; between flight, breath weapons, spell casting that scales up with investment, and funny stuff like cringe they are truly blessed in the ancestry feat game. If they can keep the mechanics I would probably be fine with whatever the new lore is

Honestly, the new lore looks like it might be a move in the right direction. Getting them detangled from the "well, you're blue so your element is clearly lightning, and it's a ray" thing and into a system that fits better with the world as is seems like a win. Might even allow for some interesting tie-in stuff about Golarion deep metaphysics lore and how it expresses itself through a PC that's aligned with one of the magical types on a fundamental level, and what it means to be an ancestry that's inherently "pick one" about it all.

I expect that we'll see some shuffling around about the expressions of certain heritages or feats ("lightning" is no longer a draconic structural primitive that other things get built on) but yeah, I'm right there with you hoping that it all makes the transition mostly intact.

I have been a bit worried for kobolds because I (apparently mis-)remembered them as being tiny dragon worshipiing trap-making humanoids who were heavily implied to have descended from true dragons in 3.5e. I don't really know in what way except appearance and new dragon types these kobolds differ from the OGL, but evidently Paizo has a clear idea where they've drawn the line and how likely WotC is to cross it.

Not gonna lie though, I'm lowkey delighted to have our usual monster worshipping trap-masters running around atuned to the dragonic traditions of magic with diverse scale colours. Seems like a good fit

One of the kobolds you encounter in Kingmaker is pink/purple-scaled, so it's not like this wasn't possible in-lore.

That kobold was purple because of the unique nature as to why it was a kobold. Idk if explaining why would count as spoilers, but that felt very much like an exception given the whole situation.

Between the draconic exemplar feature and the majority of official kobold art matching the typical dragon colors, it was something that hadnt really been portrayed in recent years.
