[PF2 / Farol] #2-09: The Seven Secrets of Dacilane Academy Recruitment

Recruitment

This is a recruitment thread for 2-09 The Seven Secrets of Dacilane Academy. This is a 1-4 non-repeatable scenario.

This recruitment is not first-come-first-served, I will keep the recruitment open for roughly 2 days till the 4th of June. The game will start mid-next week.

Organizational stuff:
- Up to 5 players as 1 spot is already reserved. This will be a low-tier run so I am looking for level 1-2 PCs
- It is what I would be called an investigation scenario so purely fight-oriented PCs, or purely face PCs might struggle here. I will not discard 1-dimensional PC's but it will be your responsibility to find yourself useful in such a situation.
- Posting expectancy, 1 post per workday and ideally 1 per weekend (weekend being Saturday/Sunday)

To apply:
- Please make a post using your PC's profile, I will have a look at it. And please respond to the following questions
- How experienced are you in PF2 and PBP?
- Tell me something fun/interesting about the PC that you want to bring?

Other:
- I value role-play, I will be adding bonuses to the skill checks if they are well described, nicely narrated, creative etc. I don't mind people struggling with it, I do mind people not trying.
- The reserved spot is for Eric - GM Wayfinder, who run plenty of games for me in the past. I want to make this fun and engaging game.
- If you are an active PF2 GM and you run a game for me, don't be shy and step forwards. I have relatively good avatar memory, but you know ;)
- I am a relatively new GM, so expect a bumpy ride. If you can't handle rare misinterpretation of rules, some mistakes etc please do not apply.

Investigative story at a school? Oh hell yes sign me up!

I'm a fairly experienced 2e player and an extremely experienced play by poster, as you know. If you put half the charm and character into GMing as you do with playing then this will be an awesome game to play in, period.

Fun fact about Symeon... Hrmm I have three of that's okay. First, he's the third Isafira character I've made, one for each roleplaying game paizo has produced. Each one has been intended to be a skills monster for their system and each has a profession or career they focus on. Symeon is a surgeon and teacher in training.

Second he's visually based on a background character in the painting of the Gross Clinic (it's not actually gross that was the surgeon's name.)

Third, he's also based on surgery and surgeons during the mid-late 1800s. During this time medicine and surgery went from the surgeon's frock (a nasty, often bodily fluid covered coat seen as a badge of honor) to sterilized tools and the whites that became the standard image for surgery for the next hundred or so years.

Argoni will put his name in for this.

I'm experienced in both PbP and 2e, though I still find things about 2e which surprise me.

Argoni is my attempt at what was in 1e an Underground Bomber rogue, a skill-based alchemical bomber. Argoni was actually a criminal forced to create drugs and other alchemical products until he was caught by the authorities. Seeing as he was as much as victim as criminal, he took an unorthodoxed plea deal to join the Pathfinders instead and use his skills to help increase their knowledge.

Horizon Hunters

With a party full of investigators the seven secrets won't stay secret for long. I submit my own investigator, Elfino, for your consideration.

Having gone through several scenarios together, you already know what to expect from me. I've been playing PF2 PbP for close to a couple of years now so would consider myself a relatively experienced player.

Elfino is an orphan who was raised by prostitutes in the Puddles district of Absalom and has spent most of his 75 years working its streets as part of various criminal enterprises (mainly smuggling). He speaks with a typical Puddles drawl which usually surprises people who expect elves to speak with a more dignified locution. He eventually got bored of petty crime and decided to become a trained investigator, mainly in a so-far-fruitless effort to determine who his parents were.

Horizon Hunters

Salaish Talenduth is a young bard who loves to help out her team. She's recently learned a great ditty to Inspire Competence, and has fair to middling experience with sneaky, tricksy stuff and whatnot.

Though I have plenty of PBP experience, I would consider myself a rising amateur in PF2.

I'm still trying to find Salaish's voice and work out her personality. (It tends to be a watered down version of one of my other characters if I'm not careful.) She tends to be enthusiastic, optimistic, and super focused on being a team player. She is constantly trying not to be like her super manipulative mother. When she fails it eats her up inside for a long time, though she's mastered the art of acting like everything's fine.

The reason I created this character is that I was always bummed when there wasn't a bard in my party, and one day it occurred to me: why don't I bring the bard? It's a bit of a stretch for me to RP a musical and social person, but I'm enjoying pushing the edges of my comfort zone with her.

Hello GM Farol, thanks for running this!
Hello fellow companions to be, happy to be meeting you!

- How experienced are you in PF2 and PBP?
I used to know PF2 a bit. I stopped playing for a year so am out of date, but am getting back into it.
PbP should be okay (still running a campaign in that format).

- Tell me something fun/interesting about the PC that you want to bring?
"I am dead," says Odo, "or at least I was dead. You think there is something funny about being dead? Is that it? HUH?!"
Dead Odo used to be human. Ripped apart by undead in Lastwall when the Whispering Tyrant rose, he was dying-- when some Goblin, hopping mad, used acid to melt his flesh back together.
No, that is not fun.
But it is interesting that he returned to life as a Fleshwarp.

@Salaish I gave up on my bards because I got really fed up of people forgetting, every round, about the songs and buffs etc.!

DEAD ODO is a Rogue.
Not very strong, rather ugly, but dextrous and skilled.

So, over a year later-- the faction icons are STILL broken?!

Yep. I hate that. It is one of the main reasons that all my guys are Horizon Hunters. It seems to be the only functioning faction icon.

Envoy's Alliance

I'm interested if there is a seat available.

I have just enough experience with PF2 to have a 3rd level character. I have been considering making a brand new goblin sushi chef, so if we're looking at a bunch of 1-2s I'll probably do that. Otherwise, I'll be bringing Marcus. He has a habit of trying to recruit some of the most questionable folk into the Pathfinder Society. He also has a certain affinity for working with goblins as he feels that their exuberance and moderate degrees of chaos help to mitigate the habits formed by years and years of desk work. Even goblins that might be described as hopping mad.

@Dead Odo: With in-person play I actually tell people NOT to include them, and then I add them in for them when appropriate. On the boards it's more difficult though.

Is there still room for 1 more? You came highly recommended at the recruitment board. I've got a Lvl 1 Gnome Sorcerer I'd love to try out.

PbP Experience -- not a whole lot. I'm playing one other game from PaizoCon and I'm still feeling my way around

PF2 -- also not a whole lot. My background is AD&D 2nd edition but I do find PF2 way more intuitive so I'm essentially making the switch.

Fun / Interesting Bit about my character:
Well, it's my first gnome. His name is Gnimishmeijinomu.

The first part is a nod to Dragonlance (where gnome names are ridiculously long). The second part "MeijiNomu" is the phonetic spelling of "Mage Gnome" in Japanese. "Sorcerer" in Japanese was a bigger mouthful so I went with "Mage" instead.

I wondered if that last half was Japanese when I first read the name. You could also go with mahotsukai as well... nvm that is longer.

One thing that might be good to do is build a character profile like Symeon's and the other characters here and then posting with that alias. There's a couple of templates or designs you can use.

A couple of good, and free, options would be:
PbP Online Character sheet
or Charon's PF2 Char Sheet

The first was made by GM Blake on the boards here, and was designed to work with the Paizo boards. It however does require you to input and update everything by hand, however, and is fairly easy to make mistakes with. I use a modified version of it myself, as I enjoy the modularity and being able to link directly to feats and abilities.

The second is one I've seen other players using more and more and is an automated google sheets that calculates out levels and numbers automatically. Harder to mess up, but also requires more clicking from you and the GM to get to your information.

If neither of those appeal there are tons of other options to chose from, but make sure you the information in your alias. Also if you find a system or character sheet you like on a character on the boards here, don't be afraid to ask if the player can give you a blank copy or link you to where they found it in the first place.

Also, different random question but are these '7 mysteries' borrowing from the 七つの不思議 (nanatsu fushigi, seven mysteries) trope in Japan? I literally heard some elementary kids at one of the schools I teach at talking about their schools 'mysteries' last Wednesday.

Wow, ok, there seems to be an interest in this scenario. And I am glad that you were not chased off by the idea of me being a GM ;)

@UncleFroggy - so far it is recruitment, and I gave people 3 days to make their minds if they want to throw their PC into the pile or not. On Friday I will select a team. But please do fill the profile by Friday so that I can have a look. And don't trust everything that people say ;)

@Sedoriku - thanks for the kind words ;) We will see if flattery will get you anywhere, but this is still nice to read. Either way, my success strategy is to lower the expectations, so when you 'highly recommend' my games in the recruitment then people may have high hopes ;) Regarding the seven mysteries, I would have to read about it

Hey @Enchanter Tim, Palandri, Warah good to see you all, yes I do remember you and know what to expect ;)

I just want to leave a note that this scenario does not require you to play investigators ;) And also you can pick races that are higher than 3ft tall ;) You will not be dressed as students :D

@DebugAMP - hey mate, good to see you. Given that you GM'ed the number of games for me you get a spot. As I started to GM I have a better sense of how much work it is, and sometimes how frustrating it can be (at least for me). However, I would still like to see the profile of your new PC.

@Warah - I love bards and don't let Dead Oro sway you away from playing one. He is dead for a reason :P

@Eric - good to see you back

Oh wow, I hadn't even checked on the names behind the submissions. Good to see so many familiar names!

Exactly... also it doesn't quite roll off the tongue as well. I tried Mandarin as well and it was still a mouthful. Meijinomu was the least painful of the lot. The other character I'm playing is called Loong Laohu -- Dragon Tiger in Mandarin; Human monk w/ Natural Ambition so I was able to take 2 stances (Dragon and Tiger, of course!)

Total newbie question -- how do I fill the profile (or is this what I just did)?

I'm a newbie GM myself -- I know the feeling. :-)

I run 2 groups at work (lunchtime games) with people who have never heard of a TTRPG before, much less played one! The one glaring thing that sticks out with both groups is that their benchmark is the body count...

Radiant Oath

oh btw, I need to add that I'm getting my 1st vaccine shot on Friday. If I make the Fortitude save and not be Sickened 1 (or 2), if you choose me I'll be posting.

now if I don't make the save... best effort... :o)

Radiant Oath

@Symeon Isafira How do you add the right hand column in your profile? All of the pages with the option to show/hide data?

@Gnimishmeijinomu - basically you put all your user profile in the big details field (or however it is called ;) Check the first link that Symeon shared, copy and paste the text (under Profile Template) into your details box and fill the gaps ;).

Probably it is better to edit it first at your computer and then paste it.

As for actually putting that data into the character sheet you need to click your character's name and then the edit profile button that shows up on the far right. Though a word of warning if your screen is too narrow (such as a vertical smartphone layout) the option doesn't appear, going landscape might make it appear or better using a full computer. There's then a series of single line text entry boxes but if you scroll down past the ability scores there's an About CharacterName box. You copy your text into there. Or paste a link to your character sheet.

I make heavy use of the spoiler tags in my sheet cause otherwise it's a flipping long wall of text. See the How to format your text below for the tags for that.

Oh, no worries about that. Different strokes for different folks, as my mother would say. I tend to take others' opinions about my characters lightly, as I'm not trying to create a masterpiece with any of them. :)

Envoy's Alliance

New PC is in progress. Will have it up soon (tm). Plan is Goblin investigator or alchemist. Probably investigator.

Sorry, I did not even think that my comment about bards could be taken as aimed at you or your character!
Sorry--
I was just commenting that myself, me, I stopped playing bards in PbP because I got tired of people always forgetting to use the songs etc. and then it is too late to retcon etc..
Was just a comment about myself, nothing about bards or your character.
I like bards a lot, and had a whole bunch of them (the Miss Crookedtoe sisters: Loblin, Moblin, Noblin, Poblin...).

re. Edit Profile: BE CAREFUL AND COPY/SAVE often.
If you spend too much time, you get an error message when you save the page at the end of changing stuff.
And lose all you did.
So select all you typed and copy the stuff before saving the page.

Grand Archive

Or better yet, create and edit on a different word, txt, or Google Docs and the copy and paste all of it at once!

Grand Archive

Or add the Typio Form Recovery extension to your browser. It saves any input into web form boxes such as the character sheet or the main posting boxes. Saved my sanity many a time.

Grand Archive

That just sounds like a great tool to have on these boards in general! I had to redo everything but the first line of my first post in here because the website threw me and error and I hadn't copied the post!

Grand Archive

Here is my new level 1 character... Gizzard Stu. Straight outta bloodcove serving up the finest* seafood* with exotic food preparation techniques all the way from Tea and Shaw's restaurant (wherever the heck that is).

* Dubious claim

No worries; I didn't take it personally. You're all right with me, Dead Odo! :)

Ok, So this is a pickle.

We have 7 players and only 6 spots :( I checked the pathfinder society guide and the upper limit for tables was set to 6. On the other hand, I don't want to run two tables of this scenario. Mostly due to drops that I see at other tables (in the past 3 months I had at least 3 people dropping from my tables and turning silent).

So let us fallback to fate, out of 5 players we need to pick 1 that will not be part of the table:
So the list of players alphabetically
1. Enchanted Tim
2. Palandri
3. Sedoriku
4. Uncle Froggy
5. Warah

Random: 1d5 ⇒ 2

I am really sorry Palandri :( If in the future you will try to risk again playing at my table you will get a spot.

So the final list is:
- Dead Odo
- Gizzard Stu
- Salaish Talanduth
- Symeon Isafira
- Gnimishmeijinomu
- Argoni Slate

Please head towards the discussion thread to provide some basics and dot in the gameplay.

Nah. Don't worry about it. I'll catch the next one.

I hope everyone has fun.
