What to do until Aug?

We are a family of Pathfinder Players. I DM three different groups (friends, coworkers, and family).

Well about three weeks ago they discovered 2e and now almost want to just completely retire the current games due to anticipation and excitement.

I had pondered an idea to use the playtest rules and have them roll up some characters and maybe play some dungeon crawls and what not for the next three months but given that much has/will be changing from the playtest I am not sure that is a good idea. Learning new rules just to relearn new rules can be hard.

Anyone else suffering from this "Stalemate" situation that I have found myself and my groups in?

Use the next few months to play all those characters and concepts that are unlikely to be supported in 2nd edition for a while. Play a Caligni Kineticist, a Kitsune Mesmerist, a Cecalia Shaman, an Astomoi Summoner, whatever. Get weird with it!

That's basically what we're doing in one of our office games at Paizo. We've got a Return of the Runelords PF1 game and the party is full of fairly unique and/or unusual builds. I made it through books 1 and 2 playing a leshy luchador until he was obliterated due to bad luck and unintentional friendly fire. Ron is playing a halfling sorcerer with Harrow abilities so he can shuffle up and play with his harrow deck every session. James is playing a tengu gloomblade. My wife plays in that game and she's got an onispawn tiefling commander (3pp class from Spheres of Might). Eleanor plays a catfolk paladin with Dex-to-damage smite-claws.

I think the most "traditional" character in the group is Owen's human warpriest, though that character has their signature "GWotCPAFFVS" (pronounced gwaht-zee-paffvs) attack (Greater Weapon of the Chosen, Power Attack, Furious Focus, Vital Strike).

Liberty's Edge

I've just been running and playing entirely non-Pathfinder games. Of course, my group has always played a lot of different kinds of games and were all sorta looking for a break from Pathfinder.

I'll also be finishing up the AP I started running in PF1 as well at some point, even after PF2 comes out (we took a hiatus in Reign of Winter to do the playtest...finishing the last two chapters is probably on the list, and PF2 lacks the necessary tools right now).

Why not play Starfinder?

It really is a great game.

My group is playing P2 playtest rules until August. They're not the final version, but we can't go back to P1 after trying the more evolved version.

I'll be finishing a Kingmaker AP this weekend, starting up a Tyrant's Grasp AP soon since I've been super excited for it. Been aggressively trying to help local PFS people fill in requested scenarios that haven't been offered/or that they missed.

Hoping the Tyrant's grasp is in a solid place and doesn't need as much extra researhc/prep during the ramp up for for GenCon. Post GenCon I plan to start Age of Ashes and Attack of Swarm as soon as I can.

And in what little free time remains trying to get a lot of ideas for a homebrew campaign written down that I think will work better with PF2 than it would have with PF1....

But yes if your local group is super excited for 2e, then picking a 1e modules or two to fill the time between now and then, with crazy builds is a great solution that probably still generates excitement -- and doesn't launch a full campaign that people will want to switch off of.

This is what I'm doing. Using this time to run short games not of the DnD vein. Largely for the benefit of a newer player (oh god no just realized we've actually been playing with him for over 7 years) who has only ever been exposed to the DnD family. First up Vampire, then maybe a bit of Savage Worlds, probably wrap up with a Microscope in order to get everyone building our next Pathfinder world.

My GM pointed out that PF1 has a lot more material than PF2 and will for some time after PF2 comes out, so most likely we will finish our current campaign and play another PF1 campaign before we switch over to PF2.

My GM is making a home brew world, so we're beta testing the world setting with PF2PT, and when the full game comes out, we'll convert our characters over and pick up where we left off. My second group is playing SF until PF2 officially gets published.

I'm running two PF1e games right now, one of which is likely to finish before August and the other of which only just started. Since I plan to run Age of Ashes as soon as it comes out, I'll probably end up running PF1e and PF2e side by side... I'm sure that won't be confusing at all. XD

I feel like the potential for confusion overwhelming either game is much smaller than running other version changed games side by side. For example my group at one point was running a current World of Darkness game and a classic Aberrant game. The system revisions between those two similar games are so incongruent we had to drop the older game completely.

Liberty's Edge

One group I play with is about to wrap up Hell's Rebels, then will probably switch over to Star Trek Adventures (awesome game BTW!) until after August - Age of Ashes is certainly an option for that group, but it's not guaranteed.

A second group is running Tyrant's Grasp, and probably will stick with that in PF1 through the end. (The same group is also playing Scion: Hero on a different night of the week, to keep things really mixed up.) Obviously, we're still pretty early in that story, so PF1 will be the game there for quite awhile.

The third one is playing Curse of the Crimson Throne and is about halfway through... I know the GM wants to move on to Shattered Star (and then eventually Return of the Runelords) once Curse is finished, so I kinda expect we'll be playing PF1 for years yet there.

Honestly, I expect I won't really get much PF2 play for awhile outside of Pathfinder Society.

My group is still chugging along playing Doomsday Dawn. We're in part 5 now and should be finished by the time 2e drops.

I run three games right now (I admit I have a problem) and I am genuinely hoping that at least my Tomb of Annihilation and Jade Regent games will be done by August with War for the Crown finishing hopefully by Christmas.

Actually I doubt all that... but one can hope.

Once those three games are done I will either start running a Starfinder game... or TRYING to adapt Tyrant's Grasp to PF2E.

I'm also toying with a few Vampire 5E games.

To actually answer the OP's question though... I used to enjoy building characters for fun in HeroLab and now I just ask, "What's the point?"

So that hit me.

My group is going through Carrion Crown currently (at the end of BM), we have been playing for the last 5 years, and I expect it will take another couple more to complete.

I am in no hurry to switch over, though I will be purchasing all things 2e. I will look at trying to convert, but more likely will start with a 2e "side campaign" with new characters..

Won't be making the switch myself, but depending on how frequently you conduct sessions, 3 months seems like the ideal amount of time for you to wrap up the main storyline of your current campaign in time to start fresh in August

In my circle of friends and family who all run home-brew settings and arcs some have recently started running other games systems that they've been curious as a way to pass the time between the end of their campaigns and the release of PF2. My wife still has two PF1 campaigns running and doesn't plan on switching mid-campaign to PF2 though she is excited for the next edition. Though mid-campaign I have started incorporating some concepts from PF2 into my campaign.

Play in the "We be Heroes" game, it uses the play test rules. Continue advancing my PF1 Magus in PFS. Wait impatiently for Paizo to take my money and ship me the new book.

Trying to be patient.

I have one group who isn’t in a hurry to convert, my second group is closing in on the final big bad before we lose a couple of people due to job transfers. A few of us will definitely pick up the new books in August. A few people in group 2 would like to try their hand at GMing so I imagine we will be doing some one shots until we figure out how as a group we will move forward. If I land back in the GM seat (which I am perfectly happy to do) it will be weird for me running a group under 6.

Grand Lodge

I’m running Skull and Shackles right now while we try to work out time to finish book 6 of the S&S game I am playing in.

We have Hells Rebels and Curse of the Crimson throne on alternating weeks.

Rise of the Runelords once a month now that the GM is up in Flagstaff.

All that Seeker content that has been coming out has been tricky, we’ve had to schedule high level modules to get people in tier. But All For Immortality is finally kicking off at PaizoCon.

And we still have to get to Iron Gods and Wrath of the Righteous.
