Character Sheet

General Discussion

I might be alone in this but I find the sample character sheet ugly as sin. I can't imagine telling someone "Pathfinder 2 is simpler and easier for getting people into the game." And then handing them that thing. All those proficiency pip holes make it look like a wargame battle card.

Dark Archive

yep agreed. was trying to make characters yesterday and there is just so much on the character sheets. I was like what the hell.

Agreed. This new sheet is god awful.

The landscape option is meh. I don't like it but I can deal.

I don't like the fact that the Ability scores aren't near the top or even the first thing to fill out. Minus the character details like name and etc. Typically people read left to right top to bottom. Outside of name, class ancestry etc the ability score should be first like the P1E.

There should be an option for a white background. Because that is some INK intensive printing.

I don't mind all of the proficiency pip holes they serve a VERY useful function. Although I feel It would be a LOT and I mean AOT easier to simply have a spot that asked for proficiency and you put 1 of 5 options. U, T, E, M, L (Untrained, Trained, Expert, Master, Legendary. I feel this would free up a lot of room to put a box for people to reference this and what each proficiency grants.
Example:
U = Untrained (lvl - 2)
T = Trained (lvl)
E = Expert (lvl + 1)
M = Master (lvl + 2)
L = Legendary (lvl + 3)

The order of the modifier and then proficiency pip then proficiency modifier then item and armor is really unintuitive
it should read (for simplicity and functionality
Sig box;Line for proficiency; Line for total; Modifier; Proficiency Modifier; Item; Other; Armor Check

This is just some of the things that I found. I have more but this is a start.

I'm pretty sure one could create a symbol that you can fill in four corners of to show how proficient you are in that roll. I am really sad that there isn't one single double sided sheet anymore and it's going to require a lot more paper, we go through a lot of characters.

The lack of printer friendly sheets is also sad, I'll see if anyone can make some perhaps as a free option.

That sounds like a terrific idea

Printer friendly character sheet

I could rotate the sheet on my Browsing System.

I really like the layout of the new sheet. It's way easier to read than the original sheet, IMO.

Currently I loathe it, in about 3 or 4 weeks I will either have gotten so used to it I wont care or will actually start to like it. I know that it was one of the key factors that caused almost 1/4 of my group to not want to even bother with trying out PF2. It looks too "busy" to me, though I have to admit that it does seem organized in a way that appeals to me (the placement of the areas)

Here's some aspects of the character sheet I would improve:

  • Please, please have some way to reference the proficiencies modifier on the actual sheet. I like the way Micheal Smith's idea sounds, above.
  • I would like for there to be more room for inventory on the sheet somehow. Maybe reduce the amount of room "magic" items get?
  • On a similar note, I wish I could list what armor I'm wearing near the AC slot, like how the attack area leaves room to write what weapon/spell is doing the damage. As it stands, I have to write it in the equipment spot.
  • Maybe put a "Bulk" checkbox near the AC items and attacks on the first page, as well?
  • I personally prefer portrait to landscape, but that's a minor nitpick.
  • The "Spell Roll & DC" box was really difficult to understand for some reason. I think a solution might be moving the DC to where it doesn't look like it should be added into the Spell Roll calculation.

I feel like as extinct_fizz said having an armor worn slot with all the details would be nice but having a line for sense or traits in the top right section would be useful as well as they are given by race but there isn't anywhere to put them on the sheet other than notes.
I don't mind that abilities are bottom left once your character is made you don't really need that anymore, and landscape is fine as well for me I just like the way it lets them lay it all out.
But the spell DC and roll box is a bit cluttered and confusing and there isn't really enough room for equipment but that's what my notepad is for anyway.

I hate that it takes two sheets to run a spellcaster now. One sheet characters for me to have available for my players is a big deal to me.

Liberty's Edge

Very much not a fan of the horizontal orientation.

I'm not even sure what would have made them do it that way, instead of the standard vertical orientation ...

My wife used the character sheet as a guide for building her character, a goblin paladin, with me scrolling through the Rulebook PDF looking up relevant details (my physical copy of the Rulebook had not arrived yet). We discovered several flaws in the character sheet:

  • The Background line is too short to fit "Mind Quake Survivor" or most of the background names from Doomsday Dawn.
  • The Perception section has no spot to record Darkvision.
  • Hit points are summed from Ancestry, Class, and Constitution, which are in three different parts of the rulebook. The sheet provided boxes to hold individual numbers for summed values such as Saving Throws and AC, but no such boxes for hit points.
  • She kept trying to read the Ability Scores as two columns. The scores are in the order Strength, Constitution, Wisdom, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Charisma viewed that way. For comparison, the Skills section is in two columns.
  • The versatile(S) trait on weapons feels redundant when the S for slicing is also marked in a bubble. In other words, the design of the sheet seems to assume that weapons can have multiple damage types ordinarily.
  • The Lore skill provided no place to write the subcategory of the lore. The empty space after the word LORE could hold about 5 letters.
  • The bubbles to mark Signature skills are so prominent that twice my wife mistook the bubbles as marking Trained skills, even though she had filled in the Signature and Trained bubbles herself. The nearly unreadable label SIG on the bubble was no help.
  • The Class Feats and Features section has 4 lines for 1st-level features and feats. The paladin has 5 1st-level features and feats: Code of Conduct, Deific Weapon, Lay on Hands, Retributive Strike, and one class feat.
  • The equipment line has nowhere near enough room for the kind of character who buys chalk and a mug. (What, no soap available!).
  • My wife wants an adventurer's kit so that she does not have to buy her tools one by one.
  • The Bulk box is small. Writing "2+5L" in it is a squeeze. My wife wants to track her light bulk to see whether it passes 10L.
  • We eventually realized that the box labeled ENC stood for the bulk limit for encumberance. At first, she though it stood for Enclosed, to cover bulk that was in containers and no longer counted against her bulk limit. That would be a good thing to add, though STO for Stowed would be a better name.
  • Class DC, a stat in a prominent location between Speed and Hero Points, is left blank. As far as I can tell, that number is not used on a 1st-level Hospice Knight paladin.

For other matters, my wife is disappointed that the playtest rules use icons. I had already mentioned her icon blindness in my comments in preview discussions.

I was suprised that the character sheet was in landscape orientation, but my wife pointed out that a squat space on the gaming table was more common than a narrow space, due to the playmat taking up the center of the table, so landscape would fit better.

These sheets need a lot of work. Even the color of them hurts my eyes.

Okay, right now my biggest problem with the Playtest is the Character Sheet, so much that I spent the last 2 days working on a new one for my players.
The character sheet should try to be clearer with its intent and info, but when I look at the one we got, it split important information all over the place, in my opinion, being counter-intuitive (Spell Points on page3, Resonance on page2). I think the most important information should all be on the front page

  • There's no place to mark down the special senses the player has, no place to mark what lore skills he has, no where to mark the dying status, conditions, etc

  • The skill list is way too loaded. Not the quantity of skills, but how they're ordered. It's counter-intuitive for me and quite easy to check the wrong one, and as I said before, there's no way for you to write down your lore specialization...

  • I find the Actions/Reactions part interesting, but, in my opinion, it's too small for you to write things in a way that really helps. In my opinion, this kind of information could be all organized together with the spells, in a way that the player can at least write down a bit of important informations about what he is doing (even if it's only the page of the power)

  • The inventory is too small in my opinion, and as the sheet is already 3 pages, why not make it 4? So you can have 2 front and back sheets.

    Anyway, as I said, I started trying to create a sheet that would be better for my players (even more so that some of them don't speak English, so...) This is what I got For me at least, the information is clearer, it's easier to check and be sure you're seeing the right info.

Liberty's Edge

My biggest issue is the ink-wasting background color. I have no real problem with the use of color in general, and I get that there is value in making the sheet pretty, but I don’t think the yellow background adds enough aesthetically to justify wasting my toner.

Do you have a link to an English version? I dig the layout.

I spent forever making my own as well... quite bare-bones given I don't have any cool software to do it. I'd love an English copy of that as well if you have one.

I concur with some of the things that have been said above:

Make some space near close to the perception modifier for special sense (low-light vision, darkvision, ... )

There is only space for 2 lore skills, this might not be enough.

There is not enough space for equipment (only 8 items). My lvl 1 character already had double that amount from the start. Since we are already at a 3 page sheet, maybe make it a 4 page sheet, so we get a whole page for equipment.

I prefer portrait instead of landscape.
