GM Omelas |

Hello All,
I was wondering if there would be interest in a short, roleplay-heavy adventure by a first-time PbP GM.
My idea is to start with something small like one of Paizo’s scenarios. Ideally, if we are all having fun – and I haven’t completely failed at being a PbP GM – we would continue after that, but I’d rather commit to something I’m sure I can finish before promising a full-blown homebrew campaign in a custom-made world with lore so deep you’ll fall asleep after the second page of the “required reading” list.
About the game
My initial idea would be to run a very loose “Destiny of the Sands, part 1.” By loose I mean that I would use the scenario as a main plot line, but would rather be flexible with the specifics. As corny as it may sound, my main interest is telling an interesting story together with other people and within the constraints of Pathfinder; if the story we end up telling is radically different from the original source, so be it. The scenario is there to give me a good backup plan in case I go a bit too much over my head (also, it’s easier to improvise when there with a few pre-generated monsters and npcs). It goes without saying this won’t be PFS.
I haven’t completely decided on the specifics of player requirements and such, but right now I’m thinking of going with anything published by paizo. As long as I can be convinced the concept makes narrative sense and is not a total minmax fest, I’ll probably be cool with it. If there’s interest, I’ll put up a proper recruitment thread next weekend (so, around 2018/04/07).
About myself
Though I have started playing RPGs some 20 years ago (original D&D!), it’s been an on and off thing, with long periods of both being completely away from them and very much immersed in them. More recently I started participating in PbP, but was forced to take yet another extended break due to the dreaded RL (mostly to finish my MA) This would be my first attempt at GMing a PbP, which is one of the reasons I want to start with something small, not too complex and that I’m sure I can finish (provided there are interested players).
How does all that sound? Happy to hear any feedback you might have (and of course, any demonstration of interest in doing this).

CrystalSeas |

I'd love to take part.
I'm currently involved in something that was supposed to be similar, but the game has pretty much stopped. We've had two encounters in five weeks, for something that was supposed to be 'post every weekday, and once on the weekend'. The GM doesn't post more than once or twice a week.
I'd like to stick with the character I've got (with tweaks as you see fit). It's a 20 point buy core Ranger.

GM Omelas |

Happy to see there’s some interest!
I’ll take next week to prepare a bit and then make a proper recruitment thread with all the instructions for character creation and such. Probably something like 20-point buy, as @CrystalSeas’s PC, optional traits, preference towards core races and any thematically adequate classes. Destiny of the Sands: a Bitter Bargain is set in Osirion (Sothis and Eto), in case you already want to start thinking about your characters-to-be.
I’m open regarding how often we would be posting: my initial idea was once every weekday, but I’m happy to adapt to your needs, as long as we stick to whatever agreement we reach.
Finally, a heads up since some people prefer groups that are in similar timezones: I’m based in Europe (UTC +2 right now). I’m perfectly fine with whatever timezones you might be in, but my posting will usually be around 22:00 local time.
@CrystalSea no problem with reusing the character (though if it’s Marguerite I might ask you to adjust the background to justify her being all the way down in Osirion). And sorry to hear about the previous group. Hopefully I’ll be able to provide you guys with something a bit more consistent and long lasting.

Oceanshieldwolf |

Understood GM Omelas - when thinking of character, should we be considering Osirian/Garund as places to hail from - my Golarionic knowledge is spotty but I do have the Inner Sea World Guide. I can't find a search bar at all on my phone so I'm unable to locate the scenario to get a sense of what it entails. Having said that, I'm all for catering any character to any situation, just wanting more information rather than less... :)

CrystalSeas |

@CrystalSea no problem with reusing the character (though if it’s Marguerite I might ask you to adjust the background to justify her being all the way down in Osirion). And sorry to hear about the previous group. Hopefully I’ll be able to provide you guys with something a bit more consistent and long lasting.
I'll start reading up on Osirion and craft something appropriate.
Looking forward to the recruitment thread. I'll adjust traits, feats, skills, etc once that is up.

GM Omelas |

Nice to see more interested people showing up =)
@Oceanshieldwolf that would make the most sense, but, hey, it might also be interesting to have people from other parts of the world there (though it would be a bit weird to have like 6 people from Irrisen prancing around some desert land without a very good reason). Of course, feel free to take some freedom with the setting – my own knowledge of the lore is far from exhaustive.
@CrystalSea brilliant. As I said to @Oceanshieldwolf, feel free to see it more as a basis to build up on.
@Decimus Observet part of me wants to say yes because I absolutely share the frustration with a lot of these “tax feats”, but, this being my first time GMing a PbP, I think it’s better to be conservative when it comes to house rules. So, at least for now, my answer is a reluctant no.

GM Omelas |

@Decimus Observet I’m a bit resistant, as I’m trying to keep things simple and within sources I’m familiar with, which unfortunately do not include any 3PP stuff. That said, I can see how the other curses fail to complement your concept. My main concern is how to make this curse present and relevant in the game in a way that feels natural (as opposed to having some poor wounded sod materialising in your immediate vicinities every now and then).

GM Omelas |

@Decimus Observet Mummy’s mask traits are definitely appropriate, but I’d be ok with pretty much anything that makes sense for your character or that you can appropriately reskin. For example, Legacy of Fire’s Earning your Freedom depends on a specific deal to liberate a village in Katapesh in exchange for your freedom; I’d be ok with you choosing that trait if you replaced said deal with something that directly hooked into the adventure. Of course, a lot of these traits might be completely useless: don’t expect Robot Slayer to come in handy, for instance.
I will give more specific instructions on the recruitment thread at the end of the week, but I think the only traits I’d be opposed to right off the bat would be the “[whatever] of the Society” traits. I won't allow drawbacks, though.
As for the Merciful curse, I will allow it and consider your submission the same as the non-3PP PCs as long as you commit to really go all in with the whole mercy thing (actively seeking the poor souls, display merciful behaviour in other moments, etc). And potentially deal with whatever problems might arise from this type of behaviour =)

GM Omelas |

I hop I don't disappoint, @Decimus and @Dragoncat =)
@Decimus Observet Hmmm…I'll be honest and say I'm very biased towards standard races. So if you want to make me happy, I'd prefer you stuck to them. I'd be completely fine with you keeping the fluff – descended from Isis but with the godly blood apparently too thinned out to have much of an effect, perhaps even some feathers, devoted to the old gods, etc. Who knows, it might even be you eventually find a way to awaken the outsider's blood in you?

CrystalSeas |

Ok, been away from computer most of this weekend, but I've got a sketch of a new character started
I've switched to a bard, if that's ok.
Her name is Hadiya Qureshi
She is a young female bard (human). She is the younger daughter of Imran Qureshi, the son of an old noble family and Ayda (nee Bishara) Qureshi, the daughter of a wealthy trading family.
Hadiya has an older sister, Naila, and a twin brother Hafiz.
Hafiz works in his mother’s family trading business, although he aspires to become a priest. He is the assistant to his uncle, Tariq Bishara, Ayda’s older brother.
Tariq Bishara has a friend, Waheeb Khouri, an older man with less than savory sexual appetites. Waheeb has offered marriage to Hadiya, but she refused him. As a result, he has slandered her in polite society and has made her life miserable
Hadiya’s uncle Tariq is furious that a woman, and a young one at that, has defied his plans. He is embarrassed that his friend Waheeb was insulted by the refusal, and angry that his niece is being portrayed as a slut amongst his friends. He has gone so far as to contemplate arranging an ‘honor killing’ to remove Hadiya from the scene.
Hafiz overheard the conversation between Tariq and Waheeb and told his twin. Hadiya’s reaction was to run away to ensure her own safety.
I'll get some stats together for her and post them tomorrow

I think my Wizard Waylund could work in this setting. He's a merchant by trade and the wager in his backstory would provide motivations for visiting distant lands.

Sleep
School enchantment (compulsion) [mind-affecting];
Casting Time 1 round
Components V, S, M (fine sand, rose petals, or a live cricket)
Range medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Area one or more living creatures within a 10-ft.-radius burst
Duration 1 min./level
Saving Throw Will negates; Spell Resistance yes
A sleep spell causes a magical slumber to come upon 4 HD of creatures. Creatures with the fewest HD are affected first. Among creatures with equal HD, those who are closest to the spell's point of origin are affected first. HD that are not sufficient to affect a creature are wasted. Sleeping creatures are helpless. Slapping or wounding awakens an affected creature, but normal noise does not. Awakening a creature is a standard action (an application of the aid another action). Sleep does not target unconscious creatures, constructs, or undead creatures.
Color Spray
School illusion (pattern) [mind-affecting];
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M (red, yellow, and blue powder or colored sand)
Range 15 ft.
Area cone-shaped burst
Duration instantaneous; see text
Saving Throw Will negates; Spell Resistance yes
A vivid cone of clashing colors springs forth from your hand, causing creatures to become stunned, perhaps also blinded, and possibly knocking them unconscious. Each creature within the cone is affected according to its HD.
2 HD or less: The creature is unconscious, blinded, and stunned for 2d4 rounds, then blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, and then stunned for 1 round. (Only living creatures are knocked unconscious.)
3 or 4 HD: The creature is blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, then stunned for 1 round.
5 or more HD: The creature is stunned for 1 round.
Sightless creatures are not affected by color spray.
Silent Image
School illusion (figment);
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, F (a bit of fleece)
Range long (400 ft. + 40 ft./level)
Effect visual figment that cannot extend beyond four 10-ft. cubes + one 10-ft. cube/level (S)
Duration concentration
Saving Throw Will disbelief (if interacted with); Spell Resistance no
This spell creates the visual illusion of an object, creature, or force, as visualized by you. The illusion does not create sound, smell, texture, or temperature. You can move the image within the limits of the size of the effect.
Grease
School conjuration (creation)
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M (butter)
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target one object or 10-ft. square
Duration 1 min./level (D)
Save see text; SR no
A grease spell covers a solid surface with a layer of slippery grease. Any creature in the area when the spell is cast must make a successful Reflex save or fall. A creature can walk within or through the area of grease at half normal speed with a DC 10 Acrobatics check. Failure means it can't move that round (and must then make a Reflex save or fall), while failure by 5 or more means it falls (see the Acrobatics skill for details). Creatures that do not move on their turn do not need to make this check and are not considered flat-footed.
The spell can also be used to create a greasy coating on an item. Material objects not in use are always affected by this spell, while an object wielded or employed by a creature requires its bearer to make a Reflex saving throw to avoid the effect. If the initial saving throw fails, the creature immediately drops the item. A saving throw must be made in each round that the creature attempts to pick up or use the greased item. A creature wearing greased armor or clothing gains a +10 circumstance bonus on Escape Artist checks and combat maneuver checks made to escape a grapple, and to their CMD to avoid being grappled.
Mage Armor
School conjuration (creation) [force];
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, F (a piece of cured leather)
Range touch
Target creature touched
Duration 1 hour/level (D)
Saving Throw Will negates (harmless); Spell Resistance no
An invisible but tangible field of force surrounds the subject of a mage armor spell, providing a +4 armor bonus to AC.
Unlike mundane armor, mage armor entails no armor check penalty, arcane spell failure chance, or speed reduction. Since mage armor is made of force, incorporeal creatures can't bypass it the way they do normal armor.
Mount
School conjuration (summoning); Level sorcerer/wizard 1
Casting Time 1 round
Components V, S, M (a bit of horse hair)
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Effect one mount
Duration 2 hours/level (D)
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no
You summon a light horse or a pony (your choice) to serve you as a mount. The steed serves willingly and well. The mount comes with a bit and bridle and a riding saddle.
Unseen Servant
School conjuration (creation); Level bard 1, sorcerer/wizard 1
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M (a piece of string and a bit of wood)
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Effect one invisible, mindless, shapeless servant
Duration 1 hour/level
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no
An unseen servant is an invisible, mindless, shapeless force that performs simple tasks at your command. It can run and fetch things, open unstuck doors, and hold chairs, as well as clean and mend. The servant can perform only one activity at a time, but it repeats the same activity over and over again if told to do so as long as you remain within range. It can open only normal doors, drawers, lids, and the like. It has an effective Strength score of 2 (so it can lift 20 pounds or drag 100 pounds). It can trigger traps and such, but it can exert only 20 pounds of force, which is not enough to activate certain pressure plates and other devices. It can't perform any task that requires a skill check with a DC higher than 10 or that requires a check using a skill that can't be used untrained. This servant cannot fly, climb, or even swim (though it can walk on water). Its base speed is 15 feet.
The servant cannot attack in any way; it is never allowed an attack roll. It cannot be killed, but it dissipates if it takes 6 points of damage from area attacks. (It gets no saves against attacks.) If you attempt to send it beyond the spell's range (measured from your current position), the servant ceases to exist.
Arcane School
Conjuration Arcane School. Waylund focuses on the study of summoning monsters and magic alike to bend to his will.
Summoner’s Charm (Su) Whenever you cast a conjuration (summoning) spell, increase the duration by a number of rounds equal to 1/2 your wizard level (minimum 1). This increase is not doubled by Extend Spell. At 20th level, you can change the duration of all summon monster spells to permanent. You can have no more than one summon monster spell made permanent in this way at one time. If you designate another summon monster spell as permanent, the previous spell immediately ends.
Acid Dart (Sp) As a standard action you can unleash an acid dart targeting any foe within 30 feet as a ranged touch attack. The acid dart deals 1d6 points of acid damage + 1 for every two wizard levels you possess. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Intelligence modifier. This attack ignores spell resistance.
Dimensional Steps (Sp)
At 8th level, you can use this ability to teleport up to 30 feet per wizard level per day as a standard action. This teleportation must be used in 5-foot increments and such movement does not provoke an attack of opportunity. You can bring other willing creatures with you, but you must expend an equal amount of distance for each additional creature brought with you.

Waylund is a scion of the main branch of the the Wyllt family, an influential merchant clan within the Kalistocracy of Druma. Waylund, as per family tradition is a follower of the Prophecies of Kalistrade. When it was discovered that a young Wyalund had a natural talent for the Arcane he was sent to Korvosa in Varisia to study at the famed Wizard's College, Academae.
There, Waylund gave ten years of his life to become a highly talented Conjurer. Unlike many, he not only survived the often fatal lessons and examinations but impressed the faculty enough to serve as a tutor to younger students and continue his studies with the great masters of the school even after his graduation.
After a few years, Waylund chose to return to Druma but rather than take up a full time executive post within the family’s merchant Cartel he was recruited by the Mercenary league for a position with the Thousand Shield’s mysterious School Arcane.
The Mercenary League is the national military of the nation of Druma. Its members are are also known as the "Blackjackets" because they wear black uniforms and black coats in contrast to the majority of Druma's residents, who are followers of the Prophecies of Kalistrade and are thus clad all in white.
Waylund enjoyed the opportunities for both adventure and expanding his knowledge of the Arcane provided by the League – however, his family soon began pressuring him to fulfill his duties to the Wyllt Cartel.
This came to a head, very publicly, at a masquerade ball hosted by the League. A drunken cousin loudly declare that Wayland had no business sense and that the Wyllt Cartel was better of without him.
Waylund, perhaps a bit more into his cups than normal, boasted that he could build a trade empire with just the change in his pocket.
The wager was set, the Adventure begun.

I've actually got a fairly complex background for Hadiyah, since she was initially planned for a co-created home game.
I'm posting it here so you can get an idea of the kind of plot hooks that could be worked in, and various ways to take her story.
Stats to follow tomorrow.
Dramatis Personae
Qureshi
Imran -- father
Ayda -- mother
Naila -- sister
Hafiz -- twin brother
Hadiya -- OurBard
Bishara
Tariq -- uncle to OurBard Hadiya
Ayda -- mother to OurBard Hadiya
Khouri
Waheeb -- spurned fiance
Hadiya and her twin, Hafiz, have shared a ‘twin language’ since they were toddlers. As they approached their teens they switched to a musical coded language with three aspects.
The first aspect is that they have established a 3-note vocabulary to refer to themselves and other members of their family. Each person has their own 3-note theme. For Hadiya and Hafiz, the theme sounds like a birdsong, so they can easily announce their arrival to each other without drawing attention to there being humans in the area.
The second aspect is that they have a “code book” of themes and melodies that convey specific information. “Danger”, “mom is looking for you”, “meet me at the river”.
The third aspect [reserved for development during game play/consult with GM]
Hadiya’s mother Ayda and sister Naila are angry that Hadiya has already been offered for in marriage. Ayda is a social climber who boosted her family’s status by marrying into the aristocracy She has high hopes for an even better marriage for Naila, who by custom should have been engaged before anyone even thought about Hadiya. Naila is humiliated and furious that her own status has been slighted and perhaps even lowered because of her sister’s new reputation.
Hadiya’s father Imran, is unaware of (or indifferent to) the furor. He is a scholar of arcana, history and religion, and was grateful for a spouse who saw to the household and his comfort while he became one of the foremost experts in [some bit of arcana]. [I’m thinking something that allows him to pull a rabbit out of his hat if the GM needs a scholar NPC to provide information/research]
Hadiya’s brother Hafiz would prefer to follow his father’s footsteps, and perhaps even become a priest, but his mother has forced him into learning her family’s trading business. He enjoys the travel and learning about new peoples, but does not have the avarice gene necessary to be successful like his uncle.
Hadiya reached out to Belladonna, the town courtesan, who has long been known to the wealthy mothers in town as a source for solutions to the problems of frisky young daughters. Because Belladonna’s “girls” also need these benefits, she is a trustworthy source of herbs to prevent pregnancies or to end them, or a home where a child can be born and then wisked off to adoptive parents with a believable cover story about a visit to a distant city.
Hadiya’s goals at the moment are to survive. She also wants to clear her name and get revenge on Waheeb.
[What was her bargain with Belladonna? Where is she staying? What is her next move?]
She leaves her home surreptitiously, but tells her twin that she is doing so, and will contact him when she gets a safe opportunity. She leaves a note that hints at suicide, and says she is doing this to restore her honor. Hadiya’s method of ‘restoring honor’ is obviously not the same as Uncle Tariq’s

GM Omelas |

Wow, amazing work, both of you. Really enjoyed reading both backgrounds and can see them working with what I have in mind. To avoid a huge wall of text, I'll reply to them in spoiler blocks.
I really enjoyed the background, not only because of the generous hooks, but escaping honour killing is such a good motivation. A few minor comments:
* a possible research subject for Hadiya’s father could be sage stones/jeweled sages. As for the other TBD bits: I'll leave some hooks so we can fill them out;
* where exactly is Hadiya located? Sothis? (that is where the adventure starts, so it would simplify things a bit)
* was Imran Qureshi a coincidence or were you indeed referencing the painter? just curious =P
Excellent work too. I especially like the low Wisdom and Char, for some reason, that seems to sit well with the character. A few comments/questions:
* If it's not too much to ask, I'd like to know how exactly Waylund ended up in Osirion. Building his trade empire, no doubt, but does he have a contact there, or interest in some particular export, or something else? I'll be sure to leave a few hooks in the official recruitment thread, so don't feel like you need to reply now;
* minor nitpick: I think you might have confused enchantment with abjuration in your opposition schools, at the end of the spell list. Or am I missing something?
* probably not terribly complex to adapt, but I am planning to roll with 20-point buy PCs;
* giggity intensifies.
Welcome to the forums and feel free to submit a character once the recruitment's up (friday evening or saturday afternoon at the latest). Though not a super veteran around these parts, I'm happy to answer whatever questions you may have. A comment, though: I'd love to accompany you guys from fledgling adventurers until you are legendary heroes, but the harsh reality of PbP (or RPGs in general) is that it is very likely we will fall through sooner or later. Thus, I'm keeping expectations low for the moment — one highly edited scenario — and take it from there.

CrystalSeas |

was Imran Qureshi a coincidence or were you indeed referencing the painter? just curious =P
Total coincidence. Now I have to go find out about the painter. Dang. Once again imma gonna learn something playing games.
Also, I'd really like to rename 'Belladonna'. She was named by my co-creator and I've never liked the intrusion of Italian names in the story. As an NPC, she's yours to enhance, but I'd especially like to get her a decent name.
And sure, Sothis is fine.
ETA:
20 pt buy
2 traits (which books are usable for trait selection?)
Any other limitations?

Xunal |

@ GM Omelas: sounds like an interesting idea.
Similar RL background to you, except I go back to over 30 years ago with D&D
Therefore, I have over 20 plus years experience of being 35! :D
But anyway...
I also have a BA in Classics (Greek & Roman Studies) and am trying to work my way slowly into trying for an MA.
Because of that, I have an interest in mythical heros, which ties in nicely to RPGs.
I'm partial to the following classes and archetypes:
• Bards, including the Arcane Duellist and Dervish Dancer archetypes
• Sorcerers, including the Crossblooded or Wildblooded archetypes
• Magi, including the the Mrymidarch and Eldritch Scion archetypes
• The Arcanist Hybrid Class from the ACG
• The Bloodrager Hybrid Class from the ACG
• The Skald Hybrid Class from the ACG
For races, Half-Orcs are my favourite core race (just because), but humans are good too.
Anything in that list you would [u]not[/u] want to see in your game?

GM Omelas |

@Xunal you're a clear winner, I bow down to you. if not due to D&D to age ratio, because of that BA – sounds fantastic (I'm all over the place with a Journalism BA and an MA in Arts & Design) =) Anyhow, regarding class/race, it's all fine, go ahead with whatever you feel is best.
@CrystalSeas 2 traits, no drawbacks. Besides the "[something] of the Society" I can't think of any restrictions as long as you meet the prerequisites for that trait and it makes narrative sense.
I really need to get that recruitment thread up =P

Legendary Sidekick |

True, Omelas. Part of what I'll do to reduce the odds of me jumping ship: I'll play one game on the site. I appreciate your encouragement, but I accepted an invite to a game last night from a GM, and all of the players voted me in earlier today.
I'll commit to that one game, but I think you have a good attitude about GM'ing so I'm sure your campaign will be fun. I wish you well!

GM Omelas |

I managed to finalise the recruitment thread earlier than expected. Here's the link. Let me know if there are any doubts or if I missed anything (which I probably have).
@Legendary Sidekick wonderful news, happy to hear that. I also applaud your wisdom, as I joined far too many games when I first started using the site (you can guess how well that went). Hope you have a nice game =)
@Crystal Seas sorry, just realised I missed one of your questions. Hopefully has been answered in the recruitment thread.

So... you're one of those who walk away from Omelas?

Legendary Sidekick |

@WW, I am. The book was written the year I learned to walk. But if I was walking away from Omelas in '73, it wasn't on purpose. I didn't even turn one yet. I didn't know where the hell I was going.
@Omelas, WIS is usually my dump stat (which works as well for me as joining too many games works for you). But I've played PbPs with some people from this site, and the community seems quite welcoming. Maybe I'll catch you later, as I intend to keep an eye out for one-shots, or whatever the PbP equivalent of a one-shot is.

GM Omelas |

@Waylund Wyllt you know, I chose that alias on a whim (and out of love for Le Guin) and didn't really consider the ramifications, but whatever happens it was all worth it for that joke.
@Legendary Sidekick ah, I'm sorry if I sounded patronising, I had understood "new to the site" as new to PbP in general. Hope to run into you in the future as well, it would be fun.

You didn't come off that way. I first played a PbP in 2013, and I guess I technically ran and played a few rules-light home-brews before that. I only played one PF game (still going after 2 years).
But this is the first time I joined a site dedicated to PbP. Actually, I can see how it's tempting to join multiple games.
