All right, cool. Though, what does it mean that all current players are 'adds'? Adds of what?

We all joined mid campaign.

Thanks for picking up on the Q&A, Tarak :)

We have one last area to go through and it will be on to book two. All of the original players dropped a while ago, and the three current players joined at that time. They are all pretty reliable posters so I would love to get a 4th that could help keep the pace.

As mentioned, though, the fact that I want to be able to review the character sheets and be able to understand the numbers on it is a pain to some. It is the main reason Lupe left. So I wanted to make sure you realize that I will want to know where your stats and dice rolls and such come from. Herolabs tends to bury that information which becomes counterproductive with all the stacking restrictions in Pathfinder.

You do not have to build a character sheet up front. Mostly I am considering players, not characters.

As a note, I give away freebie traits and feats. There are so many colorful but mostly useless feats out there that I'm trying to give some of them play time and give the characters extra dimension. You can see what I've handed out by looking at the 'PC bonus traits and feats' link at top.

I have an idea but what are your thoughts on a gunslinger?

I was thinking maybe a Ranger. An Urban Ranger would provide trapfinding and skills, plus some healing ability (albeit not a lot). Kind of an odd archetype for the setting, though. Had been thinking ranged, but if a flanking buddy is needed then I could go TWF as well.

With two blasters, a ranged character is not really needed.

I am one of the players here.

I'm best at cowardice and running away in the group.
Some trapfinding, some healing and a little bit of blasting.

Yes. We had some pretty close shaves and we use consumables like they're water. (maybe worse then that.)

Which makes sense because of the wealth by level approach we are taking.

From the house rules doc:
2.2
I don’t know about all of you, but keeping track of loot and figuring out who gets what can be a pain in the butt. So here is the plan. At each level I will be giving the players a standard amount of spending money (using wealth by level as defined here: https://www.aonprd.com/Rules.aspx?Name=Placing%20Treasure&Category=Buil ding%20an%20Adventure) and they can buy anything within reason. If, however, you ‘buy’ an item that was looted, it will cost you the manufacture/crafting price instead of the retail price. Ditto with crafted items (yes, crafting is allowed). Though consumables do not cost half price even if looted, the WBL model makes potions and scrolls ‘reusable’ in a way, as each level your wealth is reset.
2.2.1
If a consumable is used for a permanent effect, then the cost of that consumable will need to be tracked going forward as an asset in perpetuity. Such as items that grant permanent bonuses to stats or scrolls bought and used to add spells to a spellbook.

And wands work differently too...
2.3
Wands will work more like staves. You will have 5 charges per wand and may replenish by casting a spell of the same school into the wand and gain charges based on spell level (i.e. a first level wand will gain 3 charges if you use a 3rd level spell to recharge, a 3rd level wand will gain 1 charge if you use 3 1st level spells). Unlike a staff, the CL does NOT scale. You pay based on the CL the wand casts at.

You can still spam CLW but it takes more wands and some down time to recharge, though that has not been an issue what with a resident NPC cleric. So far :)

I have human melee fighter I am working on.

How long will you be keeping recruitment open?

Concept so far is a spear fighter that is on a personal quest to save the lives of nine people as a way to honor the nine people that gave thier lives to save mine.

Won't be too long. Probably less than a week.

miteke wrote:

Edward here

Here is my idea, but the character sheet isn't up to snuff yet

Probably needs back story work as well but should give a general idea

So we have

Ouachitonian - Proposes an Urban Ranger with trapfinding.
Trevor 86 - Likes inquisitors (it seems) and flexible about class.
Edward Sobel - Prolific player (which bodes well), proposing a spear fighter (Mei Yonsi) on a mission to save lives.

Questions:
Are you willing to try for a post a day? How are you at posting on weekends? What is your favorite color? (Sorry, was forced to ask this by a vorpal bunny)

I can usually post once a day. Most weekends are iffy.

I usually do not post or check the boards while on vacation or holidays.

My favorite color is blue, my character's favorite color is green.

BTW most of my posting is on my phone so I may take a bit to update profiles and such.

I think I'm going to let the others have this one, I've got enough irons in the fire already. Good luck all!

Dark Archive

I would like to toss my hat in as well. I was thinking of doing an Aether, Water or Wood Kineticist to do ranged damage and healing for the group. I am leaning towards Water.

I am a prolific poster. I generally check the boards multiple times during the day and so can post often.

Should we have a campaign trait?

Yes, that would be good. Not finding Haleen though, since she was found :)

Thanks for your interest Malinor.

Edward Sobel/Mei and Malinor please check into discussion and get your characters set up.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I had a couple of drops over the course of time and we are down to two characters. The group is currently in a cursed manor on the elemental plane of fire and stuck there. The character level is 12 and the two remaining characters want to continue on. But to do that we need YOU!

No need to post a character write up, I'm more interested in the players. Are you a consistent poster? How are you with a game that has gone on for years and will probably take a couple more years? You more interested in smash and grab, or with a more sophisticated style (no wrong answer there, I like both)?

As for me, to be honest, I am an average quality GM but very, very consistent and faithful. Baring death or player abandonment, you can expect me to run this to the end.

Please check out the house rules linked at the top and summarized in previous posts from the last time I needed to recruit before you volunteer. They are not rules that affect gameplay all that much, but you may be someone that hates house rules.

I like to think I'm consistent.

Still in a game going on 13-14 years... though, did take a couple year hiatus for personal RL reasons.

What sort of character do you need or would like to see?

I've been enjoying rogues and unchained rogues.

They got an Oracle with a companion (Seif) and a Kineticist (Malgrim). You can see their profiles under the Character tab. Gnasher is leaving and Urahbot is a NPC conversion of a PC that left earlier. I'd rather have 4-5 actual PCs though.

I'll let the players answer what they would like to see.

Ooh. Interesting. I've only ever gotten into a Legacy of fire game like, once, and it basically folded immediately. Certain never played in one this far in. Seems like a fun AP, though.

I've been on the site since early 2016. Longest campaign is one that started in June 2016 that's been through (IIRC) five GMs and is still going. 9400 posts total, across all aliases. I probably lean a bit more to smash & grab, but I have my moments of good writing, interacting with other players/NPCs, etc. Just rolling dice gets boring, there's got to be some storytelling in between.

You two both interested then?

miteke wrote:

Sure.

Wow, just looked that those character sheets... that's a lot of detail.

If you’d like a third I’d be interested. You can check my profile to see my gaming history on the boards.

Exact same experience as Ouachitonian with this AP.

What's the agreed upon Half-Orc RP rating? 8 RP?

1) Dependability
I post daily, even multiple times daily. Occasionally, I will miss a day. But, If possible, I will give warning of that. Generally, I also have BOT instructions if I miss.

2) Creativity

I've played TTRPGs for most of my life (since the days of AD&D). My more recent characters are less OP, and more themed. Some might even consider them sub-optimal, or even weird. For instance, a Sprite Barbarian with the Giant Instinct. (Currently at fifth level. At Sixth, it gains the ability to go from Tiny to Large when raging.) Or a Poppet Summoner, whose eidolon is a little girl. I like trying out strange combinations of abilities now.

3) Flexibility

I have a few house rules of my own, and I'm willing to try any house rules, since I abide by Rule Zero.

Oh, one more thing. If you have GMed this and have the slides available for the encounters, even if you do not want to play, I sure would appreciate them. I have the books but my scanner sucks.

I own the PDFs for this, and can provide you with JPGs of anything you need.

I’m still digesting all the house rules, but I don’t see anything in there that’s too crazy. I’m interested.

Malgrim does have traps covered. He is quite skilled at finding and removing traps.

Yea, the big thing I am a stickler for is a good character sheet. I want to see all the numbers, so a progenerated Pathbuilder character sheet is not enough.

If that is not acceptable, then this is not the game for you. I'll help you get there though.

Let us know if that is a show stopper. I'll get a candidate list after folks have a chance to respond to that annoying requirement.

Not a show stopper, however would like to craft my character last. Filling in any gaps (of a balanced party is a thing).

If you get enough interest that you don't need me (an extra body) I'm fine with it.

The most important things to me are, the game goes on and the folks that want to play (a particular AP/module) the most, get to play.

“ The group is currently in a cursed manor on the elemental plane of fire and stuck there. The character level is 12”

Would it be possible to make an Azer Blacksmith? The idea would be an Azer enslaved in said manor and who joins the party to break out and flee his master. It seems like everyone is at 10 race points. It would be a dwarf, drop the cultural traits and get outsider native + fire immunity / cold weakness.

What class are we talking about here? Never heard of blacksmith so it that just coloring, or the intent to pick a crafting feat? I think I can work with you here. I do like creative builds that color outside the lines.

@Ira, this is a 1e game so Sender would not be applicable.

This is one of the very first APs (or is it the first?) published by Paizo and was designed to be run through by 4 core characters. As a result I have beefed up the monsters a little so it is not a cake walk.

Grumbaki here! Building off of this with 10 race points. I got everything except “ Special Attacks heat (1d6 fire).” Therefore, I decided to take a 1 level dip into Elementalist Shifter - Fire. It gives the special attack, and is very flavorful for an Azer. Sadly, past level 1 isn’t.

Therefore, the build would be this:

Lvl 1: Fighter
Lvl 2: Elementalist Shifter - Fire
Lvls 3-8: Kineticist- Fire
Lvls 9-12: Esoteric Knight (and all future levels)

Fire themed martial build. Character background is a blacksmith (with master craftsman and craft Magic arms and armor feats)

That will be a chore, but I can do it. Might even help me get to know the character better.

For crunch, this Azer is just about done. I hope this doesn’t step on Malgrim‘s toes…but with his water focus, I felt that going hard into fire would work well. That, and being Str+Heavy Armor when compared to his Dex+Light Armor would make for a fun contrast.

Amaimon is also designed to be very close combat focused, using his blasts mostly to reduce fire resistance when needed, or for when he just can’t reach someone.

Ooooh! Never seen an Esoteric Knight or Elemental Shifter before!

@Alessandro Khadaji
I know I found where RPs were for the core races at one point, but I am having difficulty now.

My bad. I will have to withdraw, then.

Thanks, and good luck.

Grand Lodge

Dependability: I try to post daily. I am in 3-4 games and run 2. I'm in the eastern time zone, I lift weights in the mornings then off to work so I typically only post in the evenings after 9pm.

Creativity: Combat wise it depends on the character I have. I'm more likely to try and tumble to setup flanks or plow straight in. I do like to use choke points to limit enemy access to us unless they have a caster. As to roleplaying, it really depends on the charisma the character has. I have a great halfling rogue who tells stories about everything and lies like he breathes. I also have a grim paladin who is dedicated to destroying evil and wouldn't lie if he had to. So, I feel like I play a wide range of characters just almost always martial with a hint of magic.

Flexibility: I think this was with rules. I'm fine with house rules. I just like to be able to define the world. You know, understand the physics of the particular game. I do like a somewhat structured combat bc the system is designed for it. Too much theatre of the mind can limit capabilities.

So, for this game I think I want to do a swashbuckler whirling dervish/wildstrider. If allowed, he would be an Agathion blooded Aasimar Rougarou. This profile which was used for a different game. He of course would have to be modified for this campaign.

I’m not sure how the point buy race/feat/trait stuff works. Elaborate?

Cheers! I’m pretty exited to try out the race/class. A truly new experience. Especially happy to have made an intelligence based Kineticist. Having a truly high craft skill as an Azer is a wonderful feeling. If anything is out of order/confusing please let me know. I’ll likely try a test run combat here to help get the character voice down and to ensure that all the numbers are correct and work as intended.

so we have the following volunteers

Alessandro Khadaji
Kul'Theraka
Ouachitonian
Grumbaki

@Ouachitonian
Basically folks tend to be drawn to the races that are more powerful (like aasimar and tiefling), as represented by their race points. Check out the link Alessandro Khadaji provided. So to balance things out and encourage folks to take the wimpier races I have, in the past, given players the opportunity to tweak their racial build using race points and would debuff a race with excessive power.

I had a whole Build Point section to the house rules but it was too confusing and cumbersome and we abandoned it (you can see it is crossed out). That is where the race points thing was. But I am still good with folks tweaking underpowered races.

When it comes to archetypes, there are some outstanding ideas for archetypes in the rules that were just a big bait and switch. Giving up a powerful signature ability for a class for some lame colorful but worthless ability is the usual way Paizo did archetypes. So most of them completely suck. If there is an archetype that sounds very, very cool but was written up in a lame way I can work with you to turn it into something viable. I encouraged Gnasher (the latest player to leave the game) to use the unchained version of raging for his bloodrager so I am not above tweaking the base classes themselves if there is a mechanism that is particularly annoying. You know, like the aforementioned instadeath side effect of gaining and losing con because of raging.

Unasked for backstory:

Jhavhul. If Amaimon could, he would have cursed the efreeti noble. For 66 years, the Azer had been enslaved. For each day of those years, he worked. He toiled. He forged weapons over which mortal kings would have waged wars. A spear holding the essence of a traitorous salamander lord: merely holding it raised one’s blood. Being stabbed by it drove victims insane with the trapped being’s rage. An axe with a blade that existed between planes, able to cut possible futures. Swords that wept magma, arrows that melted into flame upon impact. Shields that burst into blinding light when struck. All of this and more he made.

And when he was done? Amaimon knew the exact second of his promised release. When it came, the efreeti lord laughed. He told the Azer he had not earned his freedom. He would consider the boon if Amaimon could forge a tool to cut through the puzzle that was Kakishon. The court laughed. Amaimon did not.

His bronze kilt marked him as a smith. Forging was in his blood as much as the fire that burned within him. But what he desired was freedom. Freedom to work of his own volition. Freedom from Jhavhul. Freedom from Kakishon.

He cannot do this alone. He needs allies with skills he does not possess—mortals who have found their way into this prison. If they could find a way in, perhaps they can also find a way out.

Are you OK with the kusari-gama being a finesse weapon as with Wizards DMG Errata?

I'd like to build some sort of tripping monk with a splash of uRogue.

DMG Errata, kusari-gama:

p. 161, col. 2: (INSERT As a Large, Exotic weapon)
Kusari-gama*† 10 gp 1d6/1d4 x2 — 3 lb. Slashing/Bludgeoning

Kusari-gama: A kusari-gama can be used either as a double weapon or as a reach weapon. You can fight with it as if fighting with two weapons, incurring all the normal attack penalties as if using a one-handed weapon and a light weapon. In this case, you can only strike at an adjacent opponent.

If you use the kusari-gama as a reach weapon, you can strike opponents 10 feet away with it. In addition, unlike other weapons with reach, you can use it against an adjacent foe. In this case, you can only use one end of the kusari-gama effectively; you cannot use it as a double weapon. You can choose which end of the kusarigama to use. The kama end deals 1d6 points of damage and is a slashing weapon; the chain end deals 1d4 points of damage and is a bludgeoning weapon.

You can make trip attacks with a kusari-gama. If you are tripped during your own trip attempt, you can drop the kusari-gama to avoid being tripped.

When using a kusari-gama, you get a +2 bonus on your opposed attack roll when attempting to disarm an opponent (including the roll to avoid being disarmed if you fail to disarm your opponent).

You can use the Weapon Finesse feat to apply your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier to attack rolls with a kusari-gama.

I had searched for: Dungeon Master Guide errata kusarigama

Is VMC acceptable?

And what's all that stuff about bonus Feats and such?

Grand Lodge

It looks like powerful races were a no-no in your original build rules. If that's the case I can switch to Catfolk.

This is what I have gleaned of character creation, what do I have wrong:
20 point build for stats, no background skills, special background skill bonus, standard wealth by level, HP is roll with a minimum of 1/2HD+1

Standard +1 ability score every 4 levels?

On the subject of modifications, I've got one you might consider: I'd like to play a [dice=https://aonprd.com/PrestigeClassesDisplay.aspx?ItemName=Crimson%20Templar]Crimson Templar,[/ooc] but two of its major class features (Fiendish Studies and Heavenly Fire) only work against "an outsider with the evil subtype". That seems like it'd be pretty lackluster here on the Plane of Fire. Could I have him instead trained to do the same thing against outsiders with the Fire subtype? I feel like Ragathiel, as the son of an Archdevil and a Fire demigoddess, could probably instruct followers in techniques to fight fire outsiders as well as evil ones. Or, if you'd rather, I'd be happy to gain the said bonuses against an outsider with evil alignment instead of evil subtype, but that may be asking a bit much.

But it definitely seems like a fun character to play, one of Ragathiel's...deniable assets on the Plane of Fire. Maybe start out with Slayer levels until I qualify for the prestige class, I think that'd fit pretty well together.

Alessandro Khadaji wrote:

Sure.

Alessandro Khadaji wrote:

Yes.

Alessandro Khadaji wrote:

I will occasionally give players fluffy feats as bonuses based on role-play or character focus. These are at my discretion and more often than not pretty useless feats that nobody in their right mind would spend a slot on. On occasion I will invent one. Most of them just sit there and are quickly forgotten because of lack of use.

Kul'Theraka wrote:

That would be best, or you could tweak the race and take some drawbacks or remove some benefits. For example with Aasimar if you tweaked it so that you had a penalty stat like most races it would become balanced. The main reason it is so good is that you get +2 to two stats and no penalties to any stats.

Kul'Theraka wrote:

That is all correct. Keep in mind that wands work more like staves with 5 charges and may be recharged and that consumables are refreshed every level due to the nature of WBL. So I HIGHLY recommend you get some situational scrolls and potions like restoration, raise dead, breath of life, remove disease, invisibility, teleport, etc. Well, unless a PC has the spell. Seif has a number of such spells so check his spell list first. Then again, if he is KOed, having a scroll might save his life. That recently happened by the way.

Also, the WBL math gets a little complicated because of my rules on crafting and loot. Since new characters have never gotten any loot, that will be moot for now, but if you do not like math stay away from crafting. If you do that your inventory based on WBL will be straight-forward and uncomplicated.

Kul'Theraka wrote:

Yes. Most of the stuff is standard.

But remember, do not put too much time into character design as I do not require it at this point and if you are not chosen it sucks to put a lot of work in for nothing. If you enjoy it or just want to field some ideas, then go for it.

Well, Ragathiel does not have anything against denizens of the plane of fire so, unfortunately, I would say no to that. A pity since I, too, like the archetype. Note that you will probably see evil outsiders, even where you currently are, and perhaps more so if you move on to the last book. But I agree that a lot of the power of the archetype is very situational and it would probably be underpowered in an adventure that is not evil outsider focused.

Making characters is fun. Even if not selected, I had a blast. :)
