I'm unsure of the validity of it, but a GenCon attendee posted on Facebook that it's confirmed to have longer books than usual and go all the way from levels 1-20.
That's not quite accurate.
Each volume will be the same size as normal (96 pages), but rather than have three six-page support articles, each installment will only have two support articles. That extra 6 pages will be going to the adventure, which over the course of 6 volumes gets us an additional 36 pages of adventure.
Which, when combined with some other shenanigans in information presentation, SHOULD be enough room for us to do an AP that goes all the way to 20th level.

Not every thing is of equal interest to every person, so it's probably best to just leave it at that.
Personally, I'm really excited to FINALLY be able to finish up the "Runelords" trilogy. "Return of the Runelords" contains some plot elements that I've been eager to explore pretty much since day one of Pathfinder, back when I was working on Rise of the Runelords. I've been dropping hints and foreshadowing and other things about a lot of the stuff that's gonna take place in this AP for decades. Gonna be really fun to see how it all works out!

I don't like Varisia
I have never cared much for the Runelords.
I really don't see a selling point for me on this one, even if you can get to level 20.
I knew you in particular weren't going to like this AP. A lot of the elements of the game that are my favorites are pretty much the exact opposite of yours, after all.
EVERY Adventure Path has folks who aren't interested in them, though—that's nothing new. And that's one reason why we do 2 a year.

I am probably being dense but what is the second part of the trilogy?

How much of the AP is spent in Varisia?

Oh man. I'm currently running Shattered Star after having run Rise of the Runelords, and I was planning on making a homebrew (quite literally titled "Return of the Rise of the Runelords") in about a year's time, but then you guys go and drop this! I can't tell if I'm ecstatic or a little disappointed.
My wonder is which of the Runelords are finally going to find themselves given stats in this adventure. With Mr. Jacobs aboard, I can't help but feel that we'll finally find out how much of a threat Sorshen really is.
Also, any chance that this will be runnable in a world where Karzoug didn't die at the end of Rise?

Anything is runnable, some things just need more elbow grease put into them first than others ;)

Will we get some more insight into developments in how Varisia's cities have developed since RotRL and S* (I assume those are the first two installments of the "Runelords Trilogy")?
Yes.
Return of the Runelords takes place about a decade after Rise of the Runelords and about 5 years after Shattered Star, but before Jade Regent (although if you've run Jade Regent in your game, that won't really impact your Return of the Runelords game much at all).
That means that we'll be seeing how the events of those two previous APs have impacted Varisia. You will be visiting Magnimar, Riddleport, Korvosa, Sandpoint, and Kaer Maga during the AP in any event.

Return of the Runelords assumes Karzoug is dead at the start. In fact, him being dead is a pretty important plot point.
As for which runelords get stats...

Hmm, that's a little unfortunate, but not at all surprising. I'm already having to change a couple of things in Shattered Star to account for it. If all goes as planned, though, they'll get their chance at revenge on Karzoug at the end of the campaign, so here's to hoping that it goes well for them this time!

There WILL be sidebars here and there that will provide aid and suggestions on how to adjust things like this if things played out differently in your game. I wouldn't be surprised to see this information end up in each volume's Foreword... so make sure not to ignore them!

With a return to Riddleport and Korvosa as well, what relation will Return have to Second Darkness and Curse of the Crimson Throne?

Any chance of giving an indication of who the iconics for this one will be? Also I take it the pathfinder comics tie into this to a certain extent as well?
The iconics will be the swashbuckler, the witch, the oracle, and the medium. And likely the fighter, the sorcerer, the rogue, and the cleric. And maybe even the ranger, the barbarian, and the alchemist.
And SOME elements from the comics will play into it, yes.

It assumes those two adventure paths have taken place, which is the same assumption we made for Shattered Star. And since Return of the Runelords is a sequel to Shattered Star... well, there ya go.

Oh my God!
James, you're developing this, right? This makes me sooooo happy!
Question: This assumes CotCT happened, right?
Yeah, I'm developing this. Along with "Cradle of Night" (which I'm also writing the bulk of) and "Construct Handbook" and another big project that should be announced some time soon during Gen Con.
It does assume Crimson Throne has happened, yes.
