This is a Recruitment thread. my idea is that I can run the jade regent as a traveling Circus troupe instead of a merchant caravan. the theme of this is that a circus group with roots from fireworks and dancing people dressed in colorful clothes. holding puppets entertaining people but under it all a thin veneer of menace. I will be changing the core 4 characters that you can build a relationship with into the following (Sandru- the ringmaster- mesmerist)(Shalelu - Knife thrower)(Ameiko - Gisha)(Koya - Fortuneteller) with full descriptions and history's to come. so I'm looking for Acrobats, Blind fighters, animal trainers, knife throwers, Firework technicians, flame eaters, illusionist, Killer clowns, etc....... I am looking for the oddballs, the weirdoes and the loners that need to be a part of a circus family. Duo characters submissions will even be welcome.
rules-
- Characters are level 1
- Average starting wealth
- All Classes allowed
- Core races only
- you can ignore Race as perquisite for feats without being the race (if it matches your character not for gaming purposes example some goblin feats work great if you want a flame eater.) however I'm only allowing this once. (this is the same as everyone getting Racial Heritage for free at first level.) I'm limiting this to once due to balance issues after hearing some ideas.
- NO third party publishing sources allowed!
- All other Paizo books will be allowed
- 2 traits one of which has to be a campaign trait from the jade regent players guide. You have a drawback for another trait but must be written into your background.
- 20 point buy with no stat above 18 or below 8
- Recruitment will be based more on RP than class preferences
- We will be using background skills.
- max hp first level
- Please pay more attention to your background than your build. I am far more interested in who you are than what you are.
- evil characters will even be considered but only in terms of evil greed, lust, power, etc. not betrayal to your group. your character must be loyal to his friends or cohorts. (circus are known for there them against the world mentality)
- Will be using escalated Fear rules in Horror adventures.
- Gunslingers and firearms are welcome and will be used.
- anyone who wants to take Disadvantageous Deformities from (ogrekin) can get a free feat not necessary to roll choose one that fits your idea for your character. (Fragile get -2 to con)
I will also be recruiting people or to replace people at the end of each book and work them in. With first preference to those in the story already but that will give people a chance to leave or come back or replace missing players. if we lose people in the campaign I will just adjust the CR encounters until the end of the book. along with that, any character changes that someone wants to do they can have a opportunity at the end of each book. I am looking for 5-6 players to start.
Background:
1) I'd like 5+ points that capture the concept and story of the character. More are welcome, but no less than five.
2) Two goals that you'd like the character to accomplish in-game.
3) Two secrets, one the PC keeps to himself, and one kept from the PC. I'll come up with a third that both the character and player aren't aware of, in hopes of shocking surprises within the storytelling.
4) 3-5 people that are tied to your PC by blood, love, rivalry, honor, etc. I'd like at least one enemy in a set of three or four, with no more than two for a set of five. PLEASE consider the players reference guide for ideas.
5) Three key memories that define your character as the person they are at the time of submission.
6) I'd like you to include with your submission a fear or paranoia that causes your character to shiver, cower, or panic. Anything from spiders to unexplained happenstance, but I'm sure you'll all come up with some awful stuff on your own.
7) I would like to know what performance you will specialize in (your signature move or performance), preference on characters will be given to whose feats, traits, skills, and class directly show what type of performer you are. (example a knife thrower taking blind fight would make sense with acrobatics, but a knife thrower that takes cosmopolitan with history knowledge would not.)

i have an idea for a mesmerist, the idea is she's a hypnotist. Not sure about race, still looking.
i want her to sort of seem like a dark angel, manipulative but not cruel. Beautiful but creepy, kind of like looking at a porcelain doll
There's actually a halfling alt trait that makes you look like a doll, that I think you might want to consider. You'd have to be halfling though.

Yosiah Crint |

Boram Kirkasi, the Halfling juggler and younger sibling of (some human person) is done, numbers-wise. Now to write up a tragic, moving tale of a poor slip, down on his luck and relegated to life among the mutants and freaks he calls a family.
He's much more interesting and mechanically better if he has a human partner (Halfling trait that gives him bonuses when near a human specifically), so if anyone is making their circus sideshow attraction a human, I'd gladly partner up. :D

Mala Malein |

How do you feel about this as an act.
Mala and Boram step out into the ring, the ring leader announcing there arrival with a flourish. "AND NOW! FOR THE INTERESTINGLY GROTESQUE ACT OF BORAM KIRKASI AND MALA MALEIN!" Bowing he steps to the side of the ring and allows the act to go on. Boram starts by juggling things in an interesting way. Leaving the crowd in confusion about the presence of Mala and the grotesque aspect of there act. That is, before Mala plucks out his eye, before ripping off the hand that plucked it, and throwing the whole package to Boram.
Hand potentially juggling WHILE being juggled.

Robert Henry |

Dotting, Looking at a human gunslinger from the Mana Waste, wanted for murder, using a assumed identity, and a stage name that will change often.
His act will be 'sharpshooter and exhibition shooter'
DM Chubbleston since he will be familiar with gun powder, if he takes craft alchemy, could he also do fireworks for the grand finale of the show?
Most Carnies fill a couple of rolls, Fireworks would be his second one.
edit: How long will you be keeping recruitment open?

Old Snowbeard |

Presenting: Old Snowbeard. Bald Dwarf with a magical, ground-long braided, snow-white beard. He will use the beard for ... whatever hilarious reason during the show. Maybe a clown-type, talking and 'wrangling' with his beard as if having no control over it whatsoever. Or some kind of story-teller, using his beard as a visualizer of the current story...? He most likely will bring a female Elf NPC with him to the circus, maybe the two of them can act as odd-couple magician (the elf) and clownish assistant (he)?
GM Chubbleston: You may remember this guy, as I applied to your Hells Rebel game with him as well. So I have background, appearance and all that ready. Just a little tinkering needed to adjust to the new setting, fears and redoing the numbers for first level (the current alias was for a third level game).
Background will be some kind of Romeo and Juliet story - with a eremite dwarf running from his (half forgotten) history and an adventurous, open minded elf - kicked out by her clan due to being 'not elven enough'.
They will join the Circus together as a new start and wishing for a new family that don't give a damn about this odd couple.

Do we already have the beast tamer? A Hunter could work nicely, I might whip up one.
Pity you don't like Third Party, there is a Pyrotechnician Alchemist that would be perfect. I'll dig around archetypes to see if I find something similar.

TheoreticallyYours |

More fleshed out Nora the half-orc tattooed lady (Sacred Tattoo racial trait) is covered in not only tattoos, but piercings and ritual scarification.
Big and tough, this gentle giant is very defensive of her circus family, and not above dragging people out of the tent (Brawler class, 14 str, Enforcer feat).
Though not very bright (10 int and wis) and she has a lovable air towards those she knows and loves (14 cha).
As for the BG, I'll need to wait for the re-written NPC history's to help.
She is particularly fond of halflings and gnomes, because they tend to be energetic, talkative, and pretty smart. She enjoys being around them and listening to them talk, excitedly or passionately, about their day, a new discovery, or in a story.
She just finds them endearing.

Keddah |

Currently thinking of a Halfling gunslinger, carrying along an oversized old musket for his shows, he is half clown, half trick shooter. Making amazing shots but appearing to make them completely by chance.
Are the Abilities limits before or after racial adjustments?
Imagine if you will, a 3 feet tall halfling dressed in an overlong duster and dragging a musket bigger than himself.
He sets an apple on top of his assistant's head and makes her stay 30' feet away from her.
He walks back as he mutters loud enough for the public to hear Hope this one is good, I'm still paying the previous one's coffin
He readies his musket using a chair to hold the barrel steady, takes aim, readies his trigger finger and sneezes loudly, dropping the chair and hitting himself with the musket's butt.
He picks the musket again, staggering as he tries to focus his eyes. He shoots, too high, ridiculously so, his bullet cuts a rope tying a wooden beam, it falls down, crashing against a cage where a monkey was sleeping. The small monkey escapes the cage, gets on the assistant's head an eats the apple.
The monkey smiles, the halfling bows to the public

DM Chubbleston |

GM repete- yes crafting is possible-
Robert henry- Yes on the fireworks. (Probably about two weeks is my normal time to keep open)
theoreticallyyours- see below. (this is still subject to change. I don't want to hobble ideas so if anyone wants those classes they will be changed for diversity reasons.)
Keddah- after racial adjustments.
ameiko kaijitsu (female Human Bard; Geisha)- Ameiko will be played a lot as written however she was formally trained to be a Giesha a traditionally social character serving and entertaining guests. She is the sponsor of the circus. she rails against tradition but respects it and is hesitant to break from it without good reason.
Koya Mvashti (old female Human Witch Cartographer) Koya class will change only. so some interactions will be different she will be willing to train other Fortune tellers.
Sandru Vhiski (MALE human Rogue) Sandru opened the circus with Ameiko as a partner. due to that there is more of a Asian theme to the circus. Sandru's previous ties to the Sczarni will play a additional role.
Shalelu Andosana- (Female elf Urban Ranger) will go through the most change, she will be more gregarious and social. she will be a acrobat and knife fighter/Thrower. Less wilderness skills and more urban.

Robert Henry |

- anyone who wants to take Disadvantageous Deformities from (ogrekin) can get a free feat not necessary to roll choose one that fits your idea for your character. (Fragile get -2 to con)
I am not familiar with this rule, can the 'deformity' be something that was done to the character and not a genetic defect?
My gunslinger would be framed for murder, then captured and tortured, they would cut off two fingers (one knuckle at a time) to give him the "deformed Hand" defect. yes this is an intentional nod to Roland Deschain :-) but it gets a free feat! The person who framed him realizes that the 'inquisitor' is going to believe my character, so he arranges for his escape, secretly creating havoc to make my character appear even more guilty. So the character would only be able to fire his pistol with one hand, but could still use the other for minor things...like loading

Robert Henry |

Robert Henry- yes it can be something done to him. you can do other stuff other than use weapons in the deformed hand. and -2 to two handed weapons i.e. you could use blunderbuss or musket at -2.
Nah, strictly going with the pistol!
Looking at the 'caravan guard' trait; Sandru, how are you going to tweak that?
Is it possible that a 'Sczarni contact' put my character in touch with Sandru?
He would have been smuggled into the country and needed a place to lay low; that was, preferably, constantly on the move to avoid detection or capture.

Here is a decent amount of her backstory.
Relationships there is 3, though may need to add more.
Let me know if her secrets are too big, or lame, or cliche etc.
She has memories, goals, fears, and relationships down. Maybe one too many goals, but she doesn't need to get them all.
---
@Ammon Knight of Ragathiel
Nora was also from an Orphanage, but she left because she got too old. If you want we could be childhood friends, or acquaintances.
Also your BG made me tear up, even though it was short.
@Deslin Swifthand and @Sola Nym
Nora's best friend was a halfling and she finds them amazing, admirable little fellas.
Since we're all members of the Circus, you can count on Nora being very fascinated by pretty much anything you do that she either can't or doesn't understand how you do it.
Sola we can share our abandonment issues!
----
Wow, a lot of us have kids we aren't with for various reasons.

OH! 5+ points as in dot points. lol, I've been incorporating when Nora learnt certain skill points XD

Definitely bestest of Frenemies,
thanks, the idea behind the background was inspired by a show i watched. i liked it and ran with the idea.
Dad still loves me, he's just busy right now that all...i was not abandoned....
@Nora Ammon isnt the submission, it's just my main posting profile. Thanks for the compliment though.

Old Snowbeard |

A recent FAQ threw a big brick into my char concept, making the White-Haired Witch practically useless.
The strength of the archetype was being SAD (intelligence) on the offense-side - with problems on the defense side (no armor, d8 HD) and only 1/2 BAB.
One could mitigate the 1/2BaB with loads of INT, the missing Defense with good Dex and Con values thus making the archetype already kind-of MAD overall.
With the recent FAQ one need ST to attack, so ANOTHER attribute one could have dumped earlier. With Dex for defense and Con/Wis (you never should really dump ether) you are MADer as the base Monk ... with less BaB and HP mind you.
Also my fluff - frail, old, weak dwarf who fights CC due to his magic beard - would suffer if I have to pump ST a lot.
I may try a feat-heavy way to circumvent some of it, but ... not sure if he will be capable at all.

Paribelle is a gnome who dances and capers, an energetic barker.
Najiaka is a strange exotic creature. A snake the size of a man with two heads. She sings in harmony with herself and does acrobatic acts.
She had spent every day (and a lot of copper) at the carnival when it was in town and she was watching the colorful wagons leave from an upper window. Much of the town was waving them on and wishing them a quick return. Sadly, there were too many people, and a push from behind knocked Pari off the windowsill. She plummeted toward the ground and the thick, overloaded wheels.
But Shalelu was quick. She leade out the window, locking her legs and caught Paribelle. The crowd went wild and both women bowed and played to it. Shalelu raised an eyeborw ans asked, "Coming with us?" And Paribelle nodded.
It was only later that they found all that they got.
The lights dim in the tent and the music swells. A woman's voice rises, with a second harmonizing as if one. The continual spotlights rise on the one of the support poles. There's a serpent coiled around it, one nearly seven feet long. But the beautiful song is coming from her. The two heads are singing with each other as she coils upward. At the top she crawls along the rope to the center. When the song reaches it's climax, she leaps...
From the darkness a trapeze swings in and she catches it in her mouths and swings around. Her full length twists around the swing and she flips to another swing. With twists and spins, she moves through the air. And then she ends up descending the original pole, back to her sweet, sweet song.

Gosh... I would have loved to play either a Tiefling Bard or an Ifrit Flame dancer, but alas I'm stuck with core... I was also planning on using the mostly human traits with them.
I think I'll build a strongman or possibly an acrobat like a Monk Elf...
I'll build a Monk Elf and see where it takes me, updates as I go.
Scratch that last idea, I'm going for a Half-elf Flame Kineticist. Following the idea of a flame dancer.
