Hey, hey. Guy with access to GitP forums: I got a question for them. (I'd ask myself, but I'm not signed up, and I'm a busy fathe- lazy, soooooo... please do so, if you feel up to it!

No idea, but it might vary based on which version of Faerun. Do you have a more specific version of your question I should ask?

Zzz...zzz...zzz

Ah you are lucky as I am a expert on all things Realmsian...I think I just invented that word...

Anyway...the exact population of anything in the Realms has never been detailed...so as GM...as many as you want there to be.

*Yawn*

He's right. That includes goddesses named Mystra. They seem to get a new one every seven days or so when one dies. Except the most recent one, because reasons.

I'll give them this, offing and replacing the deity of magic at every edition change does provide a fairly logical and reasonable excuse for why the magic system changes so much from edition to edition.

I would say the idea is that the portfolio of magic is a very unstable position. It governs all magic that happens, after all. I don't really see a problem with it.

Shar: Unkilled since the dawn of time. Secondary goddess of magic, creator of the Shadow Weave and mother of the original Mystra. In every edition uninjured. How is the magic portfolio unstable again?

Internal logical consistency, where art thou?

Yes. 3.X, please (3rd and 3.5).

True... but there is a reasonable upper limit based on known quantities, population statistics, and so on. The harder the number the better, but even having a reasonable rough maximum would be useful.

Also, I'm not the GM in this case - I'm planning on doing a thing, and the GM is tentatively on board, but We need some basis of measurement for such things, first.

Aaaaaaaactually, she lost her shadow weave portfolio, and there's indication that, while the shadow weave might have existed prior to the 3.X era, it wasn't used - or if it was, than only by a very few. Part of the problem for magic and Mystra is that magic is used so much that it's constantly stressed.

Of course, the Mystras have been:
1) CN "original" Mystryl; ruled over a time in FR before AD&D rules existed; purposely died and reincarnated to the next one when Karsus did his stupid thing; generally whimsical and ditzy (several times aiding in the establishment of things she knew she would oppose later, like the malaugrim)
2) LN Mystra; rules over AD&D rules FR; died when she arrogantly challenged the still-godly Helm in her attempt to bypass him to fix the Avatar Crisis; generally smart, but recklessly arrogant (as is self-evident) and... meddlesome
3) NG Midnight (going by Mystra, and honoring Mystra's LN alignment as much as her own);ruled over 3.X FR (the changes in 3rd -> 3.5 generally explained as learning her job); killed by a conspiracy between Shar and Cyric - the former to try to gain all magic (which she had prophecies for that time) and the latter for revenge/the lulz; caring and devoted, but naive and inexperienced - learning everything that her predecessor was up to was a slow task for the former mortal, and she was kept very, very busy attempting to fend off Cyric's plans against her (until he switched to the shadow weave)
[insert pause for 4E as, to Ed, it seems it kind of sucked, to the point where he deliberately contradicted/corrupted what the 4E book said about several things in his novels - not in subtle ways, either]
4) ... is actually either "2" or "3" again, having finally recovered enough of herself by using artifacts and some of her Chosen giving up their lives, essences, souls, and lower (and being kind of relieved to do so); runes over 5E stuff

Meanwhile Shar's been turned into an almost clownish bafoon: she prophecies the death of Mystra at her intent eons ago, and her own claiming of the Weave... and failed, losing both Weave and Shadow Weave, even at the height of her power. Whoops.

But maybe I'm to harsh on her. ... nah!

(I have a hate/frustrated want-to-like-as-a-villain relationship with Shar.)

Yeaaaaah, Shar is easily my least-favorite deity in Faerun, and it's a bit annoying how the storyline keeps trying to make her THE Big Bad Guy. I personally find there to be much more interesting deities in the setting.

I ran an evil campaign long long ago in my teenage years where the point was to kill gods during the time of troubles and take their portfolio.

Shar and Malar were their first targets. :-)

My personal least favorite is Cyric. The guy's awful. I can at least see how and why Bane keeps getting followers, much as I hate and oppose the guy on a moral level. Cyric? ... why?

Shar is just so... "eh" that she's also hard to understand why folk would worship her... except that she also has rather fabulous "goodies" for her worshipers, like becoming a Shade, offering the Shadow Weave (when she had it) occasionally randomly boosting creatures to divinity (I mean, she's gonna eat 'em later, yeah, but still), and accepting god-hating nihilist* on their own terms, and, of course, saving your entire city from destruction when the goddess of magic died, while empowering you for years. You know, little things.

But that ancient cadre of loyal worshipers, built up over eons, I get. The problem is all of the new people**.

And that's even worse for Cyric. Though I kind of hand-waive it as "he made his own portfolio" sort of thing - what with the Time of Troubles, and magical anarchy, his ascension caused mass madness, and seeded it in many more... hence, finding an unending stream of worshipers.

But, if there was a divine hit-list (uh, quietly puts a piece of paper away, that clearly doesn't exist), he'd - hypothetically, of course - be at the top of it, for me. Followed immediately by Bane, but that's just because it's necessary for balance, not because Bane's really as bad. Followed by Shar***.

* This is not insulting nihilists. I actually do mean actual god-hating hyper-nihilists. They hate everything, find no purpose in all of existence, and thus are nihilistic to extremes, but all of this is because they literally - not figuratively - have no souls, but a mortal lifespan. Also are harmed by positive energy. They became less god-hating over time, though only to Shar... which actually makes sense. Kir-lanan. I'm talking about the Kir-lanan.

** Except for a few corner cases, such as the nihilists, above.

*** I may have run more than one game where the primary goal was to kill Shar. ... you can't prove anything!

Man, I'd run a good, non-evil campaign! Move over, Baal, there's a new god of assassins, and his name is <LG character name, here>~!

Honestly, I hated the 4e story change so much I stopped paying attention, and I used to follow FR regularly. Seriously it went from a deep unique tapestry to just another generic fantasy world.

I hate what 4e did to Forgotten Realms so much I refuse to buy a single thing from WotC ever again.

To this day thinking about it boils my blood.

On the plus side, selling all my forgotten realms books funded my switch to pathfinder and Golarion.

Did you see my new thread?

I figured with over 200 aliases it was time, I can't link to it just yet, Tiny T-Rex has a firm hold on the computer.

Hahah! No! That's great! Gotta see that at some pint.

Also, congrats on Tiny T-Rex becoming a Pokemon!

I go for the carpet bombing approach, i throw so much s!+& out there, it's inevitable someone somewhere will favorite it (unless it's in the GM reference threads for APs, those are like a barren wasteland of unfavorite'd Captain Yesterday jokes and aliases.

I bet someone just favorite'd a post i threw out two months ago, of course i have so many favorite'd to sift thru them all would be gratuitous.

So what do ya think of my Bestiary 6 wishlist?

Maneuvermoose wrote:

I think it's a pretty solid list. :)

Though I've gotta wonder... would I be considered more of a hyper-time creature (with temporal/extra action shenanigans due to all the favorites and large posts), a high-focus negotiation type creature (due to my large posts and desire for discourse and communications), some sort of scry-based creature (due to watching things and favorite'ing lots of them - whether or not I'm part of the conversation), or just a happy creature (due to all the favorites)?

Just too late to edit: or maybe something with the Animal (fur) and War (tactics) (sub)domains?

As of yesterday, there were about six or seven hours total that I did not sleep (by rough guesstimate). It was very broken up, though.

@thealias war: soon, maybe, if I can actually do something...
