Newbie DM in search of mentor

Recruitment

Seeking a mentor to help me become a better DM and furthering my understanding of how to play the game.

For any game(s) in particular?

Best advice I can give:

1. Play as much as you can and try to learn from the DM's mistakes.
2. DM as much as you can and learn from your mistakes.
3. Figure out what you enjoy in gaming and focus on being better at that. You'll have a much easier time finding people who like the things you like than turning into someone you're not. It's possible to play in a game with a GM whose style you don't really care for, but it's pretty much impossible to run one.

Pretty much this, plus reading models can help with writing games.

1. Opportunities to play are VERY scarce.

2. See number 1
3. I enjoy playing but on the rare occasions I get to play the DM is always distracted and the campaign is dropped at the end of every session..

Is there a way for you to join the Pathfinder Society in your area? I would also suggest entering the play by post world.

The only organized event in my state is an hour drive away. And I don't quite understand how to break into the PbP boards either.

What are you having trouble understanding?

About being a DM or the PbP boards.

What about the PbP world are you having trouble understanding?

Posting a character, getting recruited, and the really technical parts of playing the campaign. All campaigns I played before we're free form, no minis or flip mats. OH and I'd rather not bog my PC down with a bunch of unnecessary software.

The Exchange

Pbp is probably the easiest way to break into these things. It's still the way I feel most comfortable.

I'd like to find a DM that will work 1 on 1 with me if at all possible.

Since I think you learn by doing, join my Dungeon Runner campaign. See if you like how I do it. If you don't, you don't.

And yes, you will be on a map grid. Check out the links on Painlords alias-- they are quite good. I think you should read the guides first as they are all I needed to learn how to move from tabletop to PbP.

THis is considered the best
Doomed Heros guide

I've always been more of a hands on textile learner, Reading the guide now but the only thing it taught me how to do so far is this [ooc] <<idk if that will work lol

**it didn't work. ill figure it out in a few minutes. I'd love to join up though**

Once more with feeling [ooc]

Posting here as it would help other people:

Well, don't worry, everybody has to learn. We all had a time when we didn't know how to play.

So... Yes, DM is hard, especially when a lot of stuff is happening:
- The party slips off and there are several "stories" happening at the same time
- There are a lot of enemies
- The level of the party is high, and there is a lot of resources / powers in play

I would tell you: Don't try to eat the world in one glup. Go easy on yourself.

- Start with few characters
- Simple adventures
- Only one big bad guy, or several simple ones (one hit and they diw - goblins for example)
- Only few rules / options (Werewolf PC? I wouldn't allow it, as it is very hard to DM that)

About the "mechanics"... Use tools!

Web-wise you can find the rules, enemies, etc at two places:

Official Pathfinder Reference Document: http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/

D20 Pathfinder Standard Reference Document: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/

Save those! Are REALLY useful.

Lore-wise you can use:

pathfinderwiki.com
pathfinder.wikia.com

And about making characters, I can recommend:

PCGen: pcgen.sourceforge.net

Need to confirm a character is well done! That's the way.

Give them all a go and tell me what you think!

This DakCentury post is really good about formatting in the forums:

This one about Doomed Hero is really good too:

I have the books. most of them anyways.
When I asked about creating a character I was talking about on the site. I tried unsuccessfully 2 mins ago

A lot of stuff only appears in game play and discussion threads.

A lot of the resources are reference documents maintained on websites so you don't have to download them. There is some custom software around, e.g. the Roll20 interface, but to play by post here you don't need to download anything.

Now that THAT's out of the way.
