Hey FW.
As I started working on my character, my mind kept drifting to playing something I've never played before...A Dragonborn (Still Paladin). Does this race from what you know fit into Greyhawk? If not I'll continue with my Elf, but a dragonborn paladin just sounds cool. Seems as though I remember one from my early Forgotten Realms novels, and he was one of my favorite characters...just not sure if this race adapts to Greyhawk.

So, I'm at a crossroads with my warlock: I have hit upon two good stories for him, each based on a different race. I won't post them now, but my sticking point is: do I want to be a dwarf or a half-elf. If I'm a dwarf, I'll have 3 16s, but I won't be able to use a shield (which is what I really need to increase my AC). If I go with a half-elf, my stats will be a bit lower (although I will have an 18 cha). So, I thought I'd get some input from you guys as to suggestions.

Yeah. I think I can do that. It leads me in a different way, but I'm almost thinking I like the new version that's peculating better.
I knew Dragonborn existed in Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, and Eberron, but I didn't think I remembered them from Greyhawk...Still these races have to start somewhere...

Can you explain how you get the shield proficiency with half elf again? I don't see a feat as a racial trait. If you spell things out in a little more detail I can understand how you get that and help.
However that aside, you should step back from the crunch and look at the character as a person who you will be playing every week for a year. Which one to you want to play? Me - I love dwarves, but they were the first thing I ever played.

Here is the story of how Sadarr Paladin of Istus came to be. I'll finish up the Character sheet tonight or in the morning, and then work in how he ended up at the story's beginning.

Ulogg’s heart skipped a beat as he looked at the orb again. Had it moved on its own? He felt no earth tremors…but that was impossible. The Orb had been with the Bent Fang tribe for ages untold. Longer than his Grandfathers, Grandfathers, Grandfather could have remembered. From times when the Bent Fang was the most powerful tribe, till now when it was nearing its end. He rubbed his eyes and looked at it again, grabbing a torch, to ensure that he wasn’t seeing things…And he probably was. Maybe the hours he had spent in the near darkness staring at the orb, looking for answers were taking their toll on his eyesight. He turned to replace the torch in its sconce, and again out of the corner of his eye…was that a tremor… Bah! Time to eat. He was growing old.
Ulogg sat at his customary place at the head of the stone table. The 14 remaining adults of the Bent Fang tribe, waited until he was served before serving themselves. There were no children. Every generation was blessed by fewer and fewer offspring until now there were none. Only his daughter Printa remained in the latest generation, and she was now 16. Soon she would be the only member of this tribe to carry on the stories. He must tell her.
”Printa”. “After this meal meet me in the Chamber of the Orb”. “I have something important to discuss with you”.
”You are the last of our tribe, and the day will come when it will be your duty to remember the legacy of our tribe”. “When you are the last, you must journey, and find someone else to pass the legends on to”. “Though the tribe will die, our story can remain alive…which is what matters most”. “I will relate to you our story”.
Once our people flourished upon this world. We were as numerous as the humans are now. But out people did not learn how to co-exist. It seems that every tribe thought it should rule all the others, and the warfare was constant. I know that now the remaining tribes cling to our homes in the swamps of the world, but once we were many. The constant warfare took its toll upon our people. Less and less were born, and we fell from being the powerful race we were to a smaller people trying to survive.
The elders of our tribe decided that something needed to be done, so we sent a delegation to the City of Greyhawk to consult with sages there. Though none had answers for the decline of our people, and our reduced capability to reproduce, a man approached the group as they began their long, sad journey back home. Grabbing our leader by the arm he urgently whispered something to him before running away into the dark alleys of the city. “Seek the oracle at the heart of Istus”.
The journey to find this “Heart of Istus” is another story, which will take many evenings to recall, however the important thing is that the surviving members of the delegation did find this heart. And though the tablets speak of finding the heart, the tablets that describe its location are strangely blank. It is said that every time an attempt was made to scribe this location, the words disappeared as soon as they were written. Only 3 members of the original delegation were able to survive to hear the prophecy, and only one returned to the tribe with his life. This was your ancestor Kraddoth.
Printa inhaled sharply at that name. It was spoken of in reverence as the last of the great Lizard Kings. ”Are you saying that Kraddoth is a direct ancestor of me…and you”?
”I am”. “But have patience the story is almost done”.
Kraddoth returned but he was not well. He quickly summoned the scribes and began his tale. Between coughing fits, and high fever the basics were revealed. As the location cannot be recorded we only know that the destination was in a cave on a high mountain somewhere. When the surviving three arrived they each saw the same thing…but differently.
Kraddoth saw the oracle as a bent crone spinning the webs of fate on a magical loom. Findar saw a noble but haughty woman standing proud, and Drimis saw a young maiden with a welcoming smile. But each spoke the same words, and though each pilgrim saw only one aspect, they each heard the words spoken in three voices. ”Fate will not be kind to your people, but there is hope for your story”. “Take this and keep it safe”. “Your people will know when the time is right”. “At this time your path will be clear”.
With a vast coughing fit, Kraddoth reached into his satchel and removed an object. The orb that you see here today. The failing man produced a silver orb a bit larger than a man’s head. With his final breath he spoke… “This you must keep safe”. “It is our only hope”.
”Since that time our people have endeared many trials, shrinking in size with each generation”. “Now you are the last”. “I wish I could tell you what to do... but I fear the answers are lost to time”. “All we have is faith, that somehow fate will favor us”.
”Father”. “Its moving”
Thus was born Fangenginguir Sadarr, last of the Lizard kings and first of the dragonborn.
The years passed and the remainder of the tribe passed to the vast swamp, leaving only Ulogg and Printa. Sadarr was now a healthy robust 15 years of age when he was brought before the dying Ulogg.
”Find our Destiny, Sadarr”. “Reveal our fate, and make your own legends”. With that the old man passed away, and Sadarr began his journey of life.

I would take moderately armored, which grants proficiency with medium armor and shields.
And normally, I would pick the character I wanted to play more, but both (in my mind) have compelling stories.
The dwarf's story is that he sold his soul to get power to protect his clan, but he only has a limited amount of time, which gets shorter the more he draws on his gifts. (he would be infernal pact).
The half-elf saw a glimpse of Ch'thulu when he was very young, and now thinks that he's a psychic being (he calls himself a psychic warrior). He has subconsciously blocked out the memory of Ch'thulu, but it has made him delusional as a side effect.
Like I said, both could be a lot of fun to play.

Indeed and Vrog may have thought we all get one. Wondering Monster and tribeof1 are quite correct. I'm afraid you need to be a human to get "moderately armoured" at this stage.
I stated in the initial brief that feats were allowed because they are optional and it is up to me to decide if they are available or not. They are but only within the rules. No freebies.
As for the ideas you put forward Vrog, I think both could fit however an infernal pact would more naturally make you an enemy of the demonic Iuz and his forces, something which plays into this adventure and area of the Flanaess.

Meanwhile I'd like you all to include a reason as to why your PC may have been brought to the attention of the authorities of Greatwall in a good way. The scenario says adventurers have been noted for their actions in the odd skirmish or raid. Perhaps you could do better?
Please put this in a separate section so it is more easily identified rather than mixed into the background stuff.

Second, I am on board with regular posting and too suffer from a number of games where players and sometimes the GM falls way short of their promised posting frequency.
I have only recently purchased the 5th ed book and may need some help with the rules. Lets see what I can roll.

What do you do when you watch everything you love burn to ash? Who do you turn to when the gods refuse to answer your prayers?
These are questions that have plagued many a soul. Some turn to the pleasures of the flesh, some redouble their faith, and some look.....elsewhere for the answer, regardless of the cost.
So it is with Tolach Stonecleaver. Born to a small clan of isolationist dwarves who lived in the howling hills, The Stonecleavers spent the majority of their time mining the iron from the mines that had been their ancestral home.
That was until the demonic forces of the traitor arrived, demanding that the surrender of the mine. The dwarves' response was typical for members of their species: they sent back the head of the emissary, along with a note shoved into his mouth, which read "not bloody likely."
The siege of the hold lasted over a year, during which time the demons enacted a ritual to cut the clerics and paladins off from their source of divine magic. The cost in demonic flesh was steep, but in the end the result was the same: the near destruction of the Stonecleavers.
Near destruction, because one dwarf had already made contact with another being, who eagerly agreed to grant him power in exchange for destroying the enemies of his race. Thus was a new warlock made, one in the service of Belial, master seducer.
Now Tolach seeks to destroy the forces of Iuz wherever he can, including guarding caravans headed to towns that are actively resisting Iuz and those under his sway. So when the caravan came under attack by a horde of fiendish gnolls, Tolach met them on the field of battle, and sent them to meet whatever demon they had swore their oaths to. Such was the fervor with which he killed them that, shortly after the caravan's arrival in town, Tolach was by turns shied away from and praised as a hero. Tolach cares for neither reaction, however, seeking only to destroy Iuz' forces while growing powerful enough to kill Iuz himself.

I am sorry Skorn. Random dice rolls are bound to create the odd dud. However yours aren't that bad. +1 in most and +2 in Con sounds good to me. The rolls aren't great but there is potential since a ranged character feeds off dex for attacks and damage, same with someone with two light weapons. How many high strength fighters have you played? How many low strength ones?
Or make something else, we are still light on arcane entries.
But if your truly want to play in this game then don't give up. In the long run I find that that low strength can make for a great roleplaying tool. And I am the sort of DM who works to equalise such deficiencies between one character and another.
Yours is a name I recognise Skorn, from other recruitments and games in a positive way. You obviously care about Greyhawk so why not give it a whirl? I would.

Anyone can wield two weapons if the second one is light. A couple of issues are that the second weapon attack is a bonus action and you only get one of those a round. Also if the spells have a somatic component then you need a hand free.
Hmm... Interestingly enough, the War Caster feat actually allows one to cast spells with somatic components even if he has weapons (or a weapon and a shield) in both hands, at least if I am reading it right that is. Perhaps a scimitar dual wielder who will still be going down the Eldritch Knight path? It would give him a bit of versatility with being able to use weapons and spells in various combinations of actions and bonus actions depending on the circumstances, at least eventually.

Good spot. I think there are at least a dozen other feats that I'd be happy with. They are that good.
However in the few games I have run, first level pcs are extremely vulnerable to permanent death. Getting to second level will be hard enough.

Looks like a Half-Elf Bard to me. You would end of with 4 stats as 14's, which isn't a bad thing. Or could go High Elf Eldritch Knight.Maybe not ideal but still workable.

I will admit that reading through the book, 5th Edition is growing on me. It is refreshing to make a character without having to look into a myriad of books. Perhaps it will redeem WotC in my eyes after 4th Edition. As for the deadliness of your games, I understand that, but I generally like to think ahead, so no worries. :-)
And now another question...
I am looking into backgrounds and I was wondering if we could mix and match elements from different ones (e.g. there is a Personality Trait from the Criminal background that I like for the character, but I do not see him as a criminal...). I am torn between three of them, the Noble, the Sage and the Soldier; all three make sense for an eldritch knight from a noble house, or at least parts of them do.
If you want, I can make a sort of fluff block, like the ones for the characters in Supreme Being's Tyranny of Dragons Campaign Info tab, and you can tell me whether you are fine with it or not.

I have no problem with you drafting a background, just let me give it the once over first. My only concern is one of game balance but I very much doubt you are a munchkin at heart.
If you want to do it like SB's game then that would be very helpful. I am at work all day today so posting will be at a minimum until later.

The idea is he is a scion of House Velahrn, a noble House known for its warrior mages, a combination of professions not uncommon among the High Elves. Despite his lineage however, he prefers the company of the more common folk, so to speak, even to the point that he has on more than one occasion defended the aforementioned common folk when wronged by members of the higher society. Not necessarily the most typical of elves, he is still possessed of their patience and composure, though those traits are balanced by a more easy-going nature, at least for an elf, which can at times cause some embarrassment to his noble family, especially when that nature has brought him to places not befitting his station. He is not oblivious of his position and lot in life, but he recognizes that that is only one aspect of who he is. Add to that his martial and magical training, even though such a thing is common among the members of his House, and you have perhaps a noble that is quite a bit more adventurous than most.

But if it helps, I'd advise you to concentrate on the fluff first over things like equipment if you are running short on time.

About me: I am in the U.S., CDT -5. I tend to make longer posts in the evening (10-11 p.m. local time) but generally can make shorter, player posts throughout the day.
I have been running a Pathfinder-ized Dark Sun campaign on the boards here for more than a year. I'm a player in a Dragon's Demand game that's been running almost a year, and a 5E Dragonlance game that recently started.
EDIT: I also had two quick questions. Is it acceptable to trade out the warhammer granted by the cleric class package for a longsword, which has the same statistics and price? And are we allowed to spend the gold granted by our background packages?

A few weeks after leaving the ruins of home, Istiel first heard the name of Kagan the Blooddrunk, the orc warchief who boasted of the deed. The trail was old, but all indications were that Kagan was headed south, towards Greatwall, so Istiel followed.
After arriving, she made contact with Banwom Jamu, the alchemist-in-residence at Greatwall. Given the hostility, he was happy to take on a journeywoman as an assistant. In the last month, they have become good friends. When her work allows her time, she has used it to seek word of Kagan, and during her forays in search of materials, she has come into her own as a druid.

The info in this profile should give you an idea of my character concept. I have not created an actual stat block/character sheet, thinking I will do so if chosen to be one of the lucky few (also the reason why I have put "To be decided" next to the class equipment, as I have a question or two about perhaps swapping some of them out for something else).
Since I have mixed and matched elements from more than one background, I will await for your approval before combining them into an actual more well-written backstory. Finally, since you wanted to know about it, I live in Athens, Greece, so that makes my timezone GMT + 3, I believe. As for how many games I am in, I am in 7 PbPs, with most of them moving at a more or less relaxed pace (as a player only).

So many people...and not of one race. Yet he was still an outcast. Some made fun of him, but most feared him, as he was different. Different from everyone in fact. Still Istus had brought him here for a reason, and it seemed as thought at this time, many had common goals with him.
Sadarr realizes quickly that he must work twice as hard to be accepted as one of the more common races, so he does what is necessary. He works on the farms toiling in the heat, and helps to care for the infirm at night. In the few free hours he has, he dons his armor, and practices his weapon forms alone. Finally, Fate spun hims a lucrative thread, as a man named Manlon Harrennen took notice of his humbleness, patience, and martial prowess, and became his friend. EDIT: I also had two quick questions. Is it acceptable to trade out the warhammer granted by the cleric class package for a longsword, which has the same statistics and price? And are we allowed to spend the gold granted by our background packages?

A few weeks after leaving the ruins of home, Istiel first heard the name of Kagan the Blooddrunk, the orc warchief who boasted of the deed. The trail was old, but all indications were that Kagan was headed south, towards Greatwall, so Istiel followed.
After arriving, she made contact with Banwom Jamu, the alchemist-in-residence at Greatwall. Given the hostility, he was happy to take on a journeywoman as an assistant. In the last month, they have become good friends. When her work allows her time, she has used it to seek word of Kagan, and during her forays in search of materials, she has come into her own as a druid.

...y games I am in, I am in 7 PbPs, with most of them moving at a more or less relaxed pace (as a player only).
The background and draft fluff is fine.
Make sure you add a section on how you received Recognition in Greatwall, how the authorities noticed you. It could be simply that you used your Privileged Position to obtain an audience with Count Jakartai but make sure you make that clear like everyone else.

EDIT: F Castor is someone I have gamed with in an infamous Way of the Wicked campaign which sadly ended. I am cutting him some slack on a draft background because I know what a great writer he is.
His character was Ethaniel Tessarin and if you get a chance to peruse that alias you will see what I mean. Having said that the DM did bring the best of his players and he deserves credit for such a great time.

What I've got so far.
Raised as a man of the cloth, Eisen is the 4th and only surviving son of Mark "The Red". From a young age Eisen lacked the aptitude for advanced studies and comprehensive knowledge but the young man possessed an unwavering conviction for justice, strength at arms and an uncanny knack for leadership. Whether to find lost treasure or fight off the local bullies, Eisen would often lead small groups of children on quests drawn from his own imagination.
When Eisen grew older his friends moved on and took to trade jobs. Farming, Crafting, Sculpting and Building. These tasks never set well with the young half-elf, his sense of wonder and adventure pulled him away from the mundane. His prevalence to fight injustice with the point of a blade distanced him from his fellow clergymen and Eisen was left with little choice but to leave his home and search out a place of his own.
He found life on the road to be exhilarating, all manner of beast stalked the wilderness and Eisen loved every moment of it. From fighting off thieves and bandits a few rabbid beasts even the occasional night celebrating with the fairer sex. Eisen had found peace of mind on the road but still he lacked a place to call home.
On a night of uncharacteristic drunkenness (never again will he dare to drink dwarven fire water) near Greatwall, Eisen found himself in a shared cell with a loon. A madman who rambled on about the strangest of things. All of which long forgotten by Eisen in his drunken state. But his sense of adventure drew him to accept a gift from the old man. A book with markings which made no sense at all to the paladin, but he had promised to protect the thing at all cost if for no other reason then to calm the strange man.
After his night in the brig Eisen was made to teach several recruits on how to handle a sword. As a form of "community service" required after the damages he had caused in his drunken state. A month long crash course on "how to die like a champion." Eisen liked to call it. His students didn't share his sense of humor.
Crunch will have to come later. And the background outline will also change now that I've scribed up some fluff.

So many people...and not of one race. Yet he was still an outcast. Some made fun of him, but most feared him, as he was different. Different from everyone in fact. Still Istus had brought him here for a reason, and it seemed as thought at this time, many had common goals with him.
Sadarr realizes quickly that he must work twice as hard to be accepted as one of the more common races, so he does what is necessary. He works on the farms toiling in the heat, and helps to care for the infirm at night. In the few free hours he has, he dons his armor, and practices his weapon forms alone. Finally, Fate spun hims a lucrative thread, as a man named Manlon Harrennen took notice of his humbleness, patience, and martial prowess, and became his friend.
