BACKGROUND:
Toby grew up in a magic family; his father a wizard and his mother a witch. He manifested talents at an early age and eventually learned the some of the magic his father taught him, but Toby did not have the magic of a pure wizard. This frustrated his father who was somewhat disappointed his son did not live up to expectations. When Toby reached his teens his father resorted to more drastic measures. He felt when he cast flames at Toby and missiles of ice Toby would learn the greater powers by necessity. Instead, after a particular brutal training session where Toby was singed and frostbitten, he managed to summon one of his father's magic staffs. As his fathers magic collided with the defensive staff, Toby felt the powers of the madwand.
He feels an affinity for staves as weapons and can use them with his magic--they are not just magic foci for him. Only when wielding staves can he be a part of a kata of physical force and arcane power.
He has left his home to develop his powers.
Thanks to the intervention of his cousing from Westcrown, his life was changed. She encouraged him to pursue his own way. Only through following his own path could he be true to himself. She was a surrogate mother to him and encouraged him and nurtured him. Although about five years older, Toby is strictly protective and attached to his cousin. When she fell in with revolutionaries and asked him to come to Westcrown and possibly help, he could not resist her plea.
His parents do not understand him, and he hopes someday to make them proud. His father sees his use of a weapon with his magic a crutch that will stunt his magic development and his forbid him to use a staff again. Unfortunately Toby ran away to avoid the disappointment and confrontation.
