I'm sure there's another thread out there about this, but look! A squirrel!
Who else is planning on frequently roleplaying ingame? It's harder to do when PvPing or PvEing, though I'll bet it'll be pretty easy for gatherers and their guards. I anticipate people taking breaks from their main occupation to have fun roleplaying (or OOC bantering, for those who don't belong on this thread ;P).
We should keep an eye out for each other. I like roleplaying with friends almost as much as I like roleplaying with strangers who are trying to have private roleplays and refuse to acknowledge my existence. :)
My Dwarven Cleric will try and remain in character as much as possible through the in game chat. In TS if others are RPing sure but if not I'll be ooc.
<waves>. I plan to roleplay heavily with Deianira. Still working that out vis-a-vis my crowdforger guild, half of whom (including hubby) don't roleplay at all; I'll probably end up with a largely non-rleplaying character that's dedicated to that group, and then Deianira the rest of the time. Or I'll just have to train them better.

Many of the members of Forgeholm have written a pretty extensive backstory for their characters (me included) so discussions and in-game goals can revolve around some of the local lore and story. It would be impractical to RP all the time, but having a known background, some personal goals for your character and a good knowledge of the lore of Golarion and the River Kingdoms makes it much more likely to speak as though the in-game world has meaning.
I'm interested in this area but with a particular focus and a slight slant to it.
Currently jotting out a full version of this and then aim to post it on a website when finalize, it will be much more comprehensive and structured in the final form but with reference to: Player Cooperative: The Shadow of the Beast (a lycanthrope initiative).
The idea to whittle down a quick summary:-
1. RP a cult dedicated to "awakening the beast within"
2. Aim to develop a narrative as per an AP with random events as per the game.
3. Combine 1.+2 but only for Full Moon RP events as per a calendar.
4. Rest of the time, players can do what they like, so it's a periodic event for RP.
5. However we aim to make a transition according to a vision and a working assumption. The transition will time RP with what I'm coining the acronym from Ryan's description difference between RP (Role-Play) and PAR (Playing A Role).
6. The timing of the gradual transition depends on what tools we can make use of in PFO via continuing development. Effectively we'll be attempting to use what we have and angling towards what our end-goal looks like.
7. At first most of what we do will be RP. Ideally our final objective if secured will be more PAR but still informed by RP.
7. is a mystical number so the summary can end here. I've tried to condense a great deal of concepts into that and it may not make full sense as such, but provides a flavor of things to come.
So short-version, yup, we have an RP group according to a much bigger plan, so it's a spin on RP. It's also as such a service we'll be hoping to offer specifically for Lycanthropes (werewolves). I hope to see more such initiatives and diversity of such from others in PFO: There is from a quick inspection, a lot of lore and material that players could bring to the game for such endeavours. That said, the reality of the game driven by economic motivations and repercussions, is something that I think anyone interested in RP and with the desire to expand it's potential in PFO, will need to evaluate how to work with the grain, is my own conclusion. With this in mind, one of the purposes of our RP will be to generate gameplay according to the game's mechanics, and hence werewolves make a perfect fit for PvP.
This is merely for discussion and consideration, I hope it in no way comes across as dogmatic; it's to point out: We're in this game too and we have "great expectations" and anyone interested in RP with a "wet-dog" flavor to it is welcome. ;)
I should express my hope that much of the PvP will result from role playing at various organizational levels. Lord knows an awful lot of our posts have seemed as if they were...
When the mood strikes I will certainly be RPing. More enjoyable with other folks taking part.
I will be trying to RP at all times, except where (as a Guide for example) RP is at cross-purpose with task.
Guurzak nub gruk dis "roll play". Dat wut cubs do wen dem bownce down a hill siydways?
(100% in character except for private and tactical comms.)
I'm going to use a combination of pig latin and ye olde englishe to make Elvish for in game chat.
Or not.
As long as current events and the math of game mechanics stay out of chat I am happy.

The UnNamed Company will be role played based on two cultural influences. The raid culture of the Linnorm Kingdoms and the River Freedoms.
As for my Destiny's Twin, I still intend to role play a Lawful Good Monk. He will be modeled on the character of Kwai Chang Caine, from the Kung Fu TV series. A traveling (solo) herbalist and healer, who will defend the weak and aid the injured (regardless of alignment).
I intend to do as much rp with my Destiny's twins as I can.
I look forward to roleplaying, but have a feeling that such idle time in the game will be sparse, especially for the first several months.
<Fult looks at the sky, squinting> Huh? Where is the harpy that everyone talks? Fult only see a squirrel...
Be a merchant guard, Lifedragn! Y'got nothing to do but roleplay! Or headstand.
Erian will be in-character as often as possible. As with others, I've already worked out his background (he's actually a character I've played in Pathfinder before). I'm also an advocate of working up the history for the Keepers of the Circle so it has RP roots as well.
Not speaking for anyone else in my company, but I plan on being in-character most always when playing.

I intend to RP the character I use at the tavern keeper. The one I send out adventuring will probably be much more game-oriented.
When all of life fills you with these disgusting notions...Know the truth hides beyond the veil waiting. Let me teach you the truth.
((I like to think I've done a pretty good job when creating the persona of Deacon, I can't garuntee 100% in-character, but as long as it doesn't take place in General and private there will be some of that flavor.))
I plan on being in-character as much as possible but it will most likely focus on if the group I am currently running with is in-character too.
Lifedragn wrote: I look forward to roleplaying, but have a feeling that such idle time in the game will be sparse, especially for the first several months. That is a shame you feel that way, honestly. I really hope we don't have to worry about achieving "server firsts" or we need tier 4 walls in two weeks, kind of stuff.
I will look upon my time in PFO as an unfolding of a story, for all three of my characters. Those stories will be spotted with times of great achievement, devastating losses, minor achievements, small bumps in the road, etc... The only thing I don't expect (Yes, I do expect the Spanish Inquisition) is there to be boredom.

You will be filling a function necessary for your settlement. It isn't required that you speak in Elvish or write in Dwarvish. :)

I guess the closer of roleplay I got in PC games is confining my choices to a concept...
Even we (Lion Council) were long-term TT-RPG players...

Caldeathe rose from his seat with a small grunt of discomfort. Last night's meeting, the latest in a long string, had gone on too long and he needed a good hunt to loosen the muscles.
Still, things were finally moving. He'd been at his brethren for weeks to start talking about how things would go in this new land, but most of them were too afraid of the gods to make any commitments too soon. "Who knows where we'll be next week?" they'd cry, or "What if we offend someone who ends up living next to us?" or "Everything is still in the hands of the gods."
In Caldeathe's view, the gods loved those who set a path and fought for it. Not the ones that waited for a revelation of what They wanted. He longed for action. The movement to build something that the gods would look upon with favour or displeasure, so long as They looked and took notice that Their creations were making use of the tools They provided.
And now, questions. Questions of how people would behave as they conducted their lives. Bah! Caldeathe and his siblings would behave as they always did. "By Sword, and Bow, and Stag, and Boar." he whispered so only Erastil could hear. "We'll show them how to behave."
I hope to see what I consider true role playing in game. If such exists I'll try and take part as much as I can (without taking a hit to my character's PvP viability).
One thing for RP'ers to consider in time with PFO, is a very very good article by Ryan Dancey previously:-
The third is scope.
The tabletop game is focused on adventuring heroes who typically engage in what we would call "PvE" experiences. The Online game is a superset of that, and brings in a wide and diverse range of new character archetypes: crafters, harvesters, diplomats, spies, leaders of large social organizations, etc. The Online game focuses on meaningful human interactions - which some would reduce to "PvP" (although frankly, that's a very narrow view of the concept and one we tend to reject as being too small for our vision). The tabletop game has few rules that govern interactions between players so we need to design those systems for the Online game. The Online game has to provide as diverse and interesting a range of game mechanics for all those new character types as it does for the classic adventurers. Essentially what we are doing is removing most of the NPCs from the game world and replacing them with player characters, and in order to make that experience satisfying for those players we have to invest in game development of systems and content that reward them for their investment of time in the game.
<Kabal> Dan Repperger wrote: I intend to RP the character I use at the tavern keeper. The one I send out adventuring will probably be much more game-oriented. The one I have in his tavern will be RPing falling down drunk, most of the time, except when he RPs slumped over drunk.
When adventuring, probably just in greetings and such and then concentrate on not dying by speaking clearly and not stopping to think about how to speak in RP mode while doing so. :-)
I plan on trying to RP during the game, as RP is my main enjoyment in MMO's. I'm not sure as to how practical that will end up being...but I'll do my best as the situation allows for it.
Unless the need is urgent and involves RL (announcing a bio break, for instance), my characters stay in character all the time. I have never found this to be limiting in other MMOs, and I expect my experience will be similar in PFO.

I've never role played in an MMORPG before. I look forward to creating a character I'd want to portray for hours on end while I discover the game.
I have a hard time RPing within MMOs, but I am going to try it with an alt idea or two that I had planned for Blackwood.

I hope everyone is roleplaying regardless of what they are doing. Not sure why it seems like folks have to choose, you don't. Just pretend you are a person in the world that you are in (Golarion). It is easy! :)

Not if you type at a medium or slow pace. Then you just become that insanely quiet guy who never reacts to anything...
Having it be totally text based and not worrying about it going over voice would certainly ease me into it more.
I have created a character that who is a little like me. So, Rp will be more easy.
I'll be trying to roleplay in-character as much as possible personally. I tend to prefer text-based myself and leave chats for ooc discussions and general socializing.
I haven't seriously RP since days before AOL existed... I'm old. I used to spend my days in a America Online chat channel where guys would buy me drinks and send me roses in all Ascii.
We had some damn good chats and much fun was had.

I'll be IC (in-character) pretty much all the time with any character. Tells, party, Team Speak, etc. are all handy for the OOC (Out-Of-Character) stuff without needing to break character.
I will also be spending quite a bit of time attempting to start several RP initiatives to try to wrap the pragmatic "playing the game" activities in a RP feel to help promote more RP in-game.
It falls to we who have enjoyed it in many other games, and know that it is possible in this kind of game, to model it for those who have yet to discover the same enjoyment. Nothing helps promote RP like seeing others already doing it.
Thanks, KC, for starting the thread.

It is easy! :) In my case, as my husband doesn't RP but has a habit of chatting away about what we (as a couple) are doing this weekend, or whatever, it's much easier to use a non-RP character when I'm gaming with him. Saves time and effort either reminding him that no, Deianira doesn't know "Bob" and/or IC explaining the crazy guy in the group. It's worked for 20-some years, so it's probably what I'll stick with.
Not to say my secondary character won't RP at all. I'll just have to build "Bob" into her background, so I'm waiting to find out what he's playing (race, class) before doing too much work on her.
And on a related topic - I, too, tend to RP in text and save voice chat for OOC game and social chatting.

Everyone playing IT Buzzword Bingo has to drink, he said "fabric".
I plan to rp in the gaming sense. Develop a character, etc. Not sure if I'll actually write or act beyond that. Would be nice if we could keep the whole nub!!! Chat out of the game. That is what ruins immersion imo. Having a moment and some dude comes up, ganks your one true love and begins crouching on her chin.
I also think the same thing I said about other games, if you want rp in a sandbox, ya gotta fight for it. I'm down whenever, wherever to fight for rp or structure. Lezgo.

Those who are interested in RP'ing of Inn-keepers appear to have a role that could be exceptionally well suited to RP with the full works to support such a role, btw, and of course such a role is by nature highly sociable... unless we're talking about "The grumpy/surly inn-keeper at the 5 Bells Inn... but the bitter is the best in the business, and hence the customers put up with the bad service,"?
skipping everything everyone said, I will be almost entirely RP, unless the situation calls for Meta-knowledge. Or is just talking with buddies about life and stuff.

The biggest killer to roleplay is when real world discussions intrude.
Religion and Politics (esp. US politics) seem to be the main culprits.

Actually I think the biggest killer to RP is discussion/insult contests about role playing. On the one hand you have the RP police trying to impose their will on how others do or don't it, and on the other you have the jerks belittling those who attempt it.
Politics and Religion are too often subjects of passion rather than reason, and as such grow passionate and unreasonable awfully quickly.
