What are the Popcorn Topics?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Just wool-gathering at this point. What do you consider some of PF's "Popcorn Topics" to be? Some I can think off off-hand are:

- Wizard versus fighter
- Alignment
- Dang-fartin'* DMs|Players|etc.
- Caster versus noncaster (slightly separate from wizard v fighter)
- The fighter is boring
- The rogue is AUUUUUUGGH!
- The monk is AUUUUUGGHHH!
- Rollplayer versus roleplayer
- RAW versus RAI
- ______ is broken
- Kobold tail feats
- It isn't realistic/well it's a fantasy game
- High-level play versus mid and low

* This is my word. It is a very precious word. You cannot steals it.

But have I left any out?

Popcorn topics are sort of cyclic topics. Topics that come up from time to time and repeat, repeat, repeat...because they've effectively become part of the culture. It's akin to asking, "What is art?" in Design 101. Everyone does, and they can't stop talking about it, all the way through 401. Or, you know, they're the gamer equivalent of that chat by the watercooler. You know the type. It starts with: "Hey...so. How are the Wildcats this season, Bob?"

1 word Paladin

The Exchange

I don't mind seeing any of these topics come up - I just regret the fact that sooner or later a few of the contributors lose interest in the actual topic and concentrate on chewing holes in each other. And the rest of us have to slide through screens of hatescreech* just to try to follow the actual topic... We need a Dueling Arena forum for these people. First guy to lose six points (in the eyes of the judges) loses forum access for a month. ;)

*That is my word. But you can steal it if you want.

What's dang-fartin?

Ha ha. May not be a bad idea, there.

I definitely have to give points to 'hatescreech.' That is an awesome word and it is descriptive sometimes.

Tell me about it.

For me, there is also the fact that these thread topics come up so often that they have accumulated a lot of jargon - which I am not really familiar with at all..

Makes a good discussion difficult.

EDIT: But to answer your question, there are usually large post counts under the threads asking for/claiming to have the secret recipe for ranged flanking.

GM's game vs Player's game has been pretty big recently.

Sczarni

Fighters, monks, rogues, and paladins all draw crowds at their mere mention. I feel like next time I want a thread to get 10,000 hits I need to find a way to mention one of them.

Also, re-creating pop culture characters as Pathfinder PC's.

Also, I wouldn't count Kobold Tail feats. I can't remember the last time I saw a thread about them.

Surprised nobody's mentioned Crane Wing yet. That thread still gets bumped pretty regularly.

Improved Weapon Finesse tends to get people riled up. Charisma dumping too, though not to the same extent as much of the stuff already in this thread I think.

No mention of alignment? Gygax's set of personality descriptions can still engender endless talk when it comes up.

I've managed to channel the power of a rogue thread into actual constructive optimization.

The succubus in a grapple thread was a pretty big hit while it was alive....

Also ravingdork's emporium-esque threads. Or any thread bringing up an interesting character from fiction saying "what class is he?" Like for example, what class is Gandalf/Link/Ezio/Avengers ect.

Falling. In terms of alignment and class, not wandering off cliffs. The number of "should this Paladin fall?", "why did my DM present me with a sadistic and impossible choice and make me fall" or similar threads is huge. And they seem to get hundreds of angry, conflicting responses. *sigh*

Crane Wing'd is now the catch all term for when the Devs "rebalance" something that shouldn't have been touched.

Recently a big one has been the definition of wield.

It lives on

How to roleplay X. Sometimes asking how to roleplay or how a particular stat like intelligence or charisma blows up. Everyone has a different opinion, but some opinions think their more right than others. Any topic like that can really set on fire.

Magic item shops on every street.
Sexism.
Healing in combat.
Stormwind fallacy.

Shop smart. Shop magic mart!

Wait no, did that wrong. Also, magic item system in general. Crafting, magic mart, treadmill... Those 3 tend to blow.

It can be found here. It is indeed a useful thread, and has made me rethink aspects of the rogue class and how to play one. It specifically limits its scope to within the current rules though, so doesn't address wider mechanical problems.

stat-roll vs point-buy

When you can take 10 and when a bluff/sense motive functions are another two that can pop. Results may vary.

The Summoners are viable options/No, they're just Pokemon threads.

I'd be almost tempted to do the same with fighters and monks.

But, frankly, they're problems lie outside the scope of optimization.

I actually LOL'd while reading that thread. Thanks for showing me this thread, guys.

That would be the good kind of popcorn thread. : D

I'd like to see a "101 '101' threads" thread.

This one.
