If you feel the need to put in a justification to explain why you did what you did when you wrote the item, then it's not a good item.
Also, how did a 397 word item get submitted? I thought auto-rejects were actually auto-rejected. Really, I'd love it if the submission form went "Thank you for submitting your item. Word count is over 300, so your item has been deleted. Try again next year."
Nope, over-wordcount items are manually removed from the queue, but it seems I missed one or two.
BTW, the longest entry we got this year was 677 words.

That item had great potential. The seed was there, but it wasn't allowed to germinate. A great spy item would have resulted. Instead the vote goes to yet another item that hints to the continued existence of tinker gnomes, two game editions removed.

I've been saving screencaps of items as I see them, naming so as to avoid duplicates. Still haven't seen my own item, and I've voted on 223 *UNIQUE* items thus far.

That's an awful lot to pay for an item that... doesn't really do anything. Adding extra paragraphs of history for the item doesn't make me fail to notice that it is useless. It just seems like you're padding your word count.
I am now so glad I ditched my original item and went back to the drawing board. Saw one just now that had a similar theme and executed it much, much better than I did with mine.
Gold pieces per item ability is frequently way outa wack too. An inter planar high powered Swiss Army knife spell monster bandoleer of cans for fifty five gp!? I exaggerate and blend cases here but really folks.

Saw my item!
So one Joke Item made me Laugh...well played....no vote but well played.
Hmm...class ability in a can vs. take away all the penalties of this other item so my character has no drawbacks when using it. Tough call.
And that thing might as well be a scroll of 'insert spell.'
Now that, I really like.
The one thing I will never vote for are the RNG Deck of...

Mad eye moody, towel from hitchikers guide... Anime anime anime. Too much recycling out there! Get creative a bit more. Less homage-entity more inventive imagination. The creative ones stand out way over the others, too bad there wasn't a forced. Pairs and a !exciting!like!lots button too.
I was a marathon voter last year and if my count is right almost made champion and I saw my item twice.
Don't lose hope.
Also have not seen my yet either.

Starting to think my item got DQ'd as I've voted on several hundred items and I've yet to see mine but have seen some items 8 times.
Last year it took me days to find mine...And my wife was voting too. Neither one of us saw it until after the purge as I recall. So don't worry about it yet.
Last year I didn't see my item until after the culling, which was weeks of voting. Even after the number of items had been reduced, I only saw it twice more. Don't lose heart just yet.
Last year, I don't think I saw mine until after the cull (which was a nice thing to see).
Gonna keep voting for half an hour... Getting into a frustrating slog of repeats.

Starting to think my item got DQ'd as I've voted on several hundred items and I've yet to see mine but have seen some items 8 times.
This feels like 2013! First came the DQ fear, but then I saw it. Then there was the cull, and the anxiety came back unti I finally saw it again.
I expect this year to be a lot like last year in this regard.
That seems awfully cheap for a get-out-of-dying-free item.
Voting, voting, voting.... did I pay my rent....? *@#% I need to go pay my rent. lol

Last year I didn't see my quicksand cloak til a couple of days after the cull. Don't let that drive you crazy.
This year seems better than last year, but most choices still seem to be "both of these items are awful". Thus far, four items I like and one that was kinda impressive.
