Hello, Pathfinders! This is my first post here, so hopefully I picked the right spot for it. At any rate, I would like to share with you all a little program I made that implements the race creation rules from the Advanced Race Guide. It lets you build a race using the traits found in the ARG, and then it will generate a rulebook-style entry that you can copy/paste elsewhere.

Warhawk7 |

I love it. Here are my thoughts.
Pros
1. Very easy to use, and pretty much self-explanatory.
2. The data files are in XML, which make it relatively easy to add your own custom traits, feats, etc. Perhaps a short tutorial is in order for those who have never messed with such files (although Notepad does absolutely fine).
Cons
1. There is a bug where it crashes sometimes when you remove a trait from the selection. It still asks you if you want to save the race entry, so it isn't too much of a hassle.
2. You need to exit and reopen the program to create or edit another race. A simple File menu at the top would be helpful, with the option to create a new race or open an existing race.
In all, great program.

The Bobby Llama |

Thank you for the feedback, Warhawk. In response to some of your points:
Pro 2: I did the files in XML mainly for my own convenience for keeping them updated. A how-to guide for customizing them is something I'd like to get around to someday.
Con 1: Very strange that it is still asking you to save. Do you get any sort of message when the crash occurs? Have you seen any pattern in what type of trait can cause this (with settings or not, valid settings or not, and so on)?
Con 2: There is a File menu, but it is currently called Actions, because I originally had different plans for how the program would manage races. It will be renamed to File in the next update. If you're not even seeing the Actions menu, then - coupled with Con 1 - that sounds like something may be going haywire with your specific setup.

The Bobby Llama |

New Update!
- Added a filter to the race selection popup to only see Paizo or custom races.
- The Actions menu has been renamed to be the File menu, because reasons and sense.
- There is now an option in the File menu to delete one or more races. You monster.
- The Breath Weapon trait has been rehabilitated from his goblin upbringing* and should no longer rage at all of the words on the rulebook entry tab. He still breaks some of the rules for how traits should behave in the program, so let me know if you see anything funky.
Oh, and just a note: The program checks for updates automatically and will prompt you when you exit. No need to creep all up on my thread to stay up to date.
*: They adopted him because he pukes death on people, and that's AWESOME.

so i dont know if i am missing some thing but i keep getting this error

I made this using your program! I had to to add the Other Racial Traits manually, however. I also added all the b /b tags.
Fey Changelings
Fey have also been known to drop their half-blood offspring off on foster parents. Fey changelings have all the same traits as changelings from hag origins but lose darkvision in exchange for low-light vision and the fey resistance to damage from all but cold iron weapons. Their fey parentage also gives them increased dexterity instead of wisdom. All fey changelings speak one language of their foster parents, usually common, as well as naturally know Aklo and Sylvan. Unlike the hag changelings, fey changelings can be male or female. Like the hag changelings, they too will start to hear a mysterious call as they reach adulthood. Those that heed the call give up their former lives to become full fey creatures. Those that resist will find their own destinies elsewhere.
Physical Description: While they appear as normal members of their non-fey parent as babies and young children, their fey heritage starts to show as they reach puberty. Fey changelings' hair color typically turns to flaxen, dark, fiery red, or even green or purple shades. Their ears become slightly pointed and they gain light and skinny builds. Additional physical features, depending on the type of fey parent, will start to show as they age.
Standard Racial Traits
Ability Score Racial Traits: Fey changelings gain +2 Dex, -2 Con, and +2 Cha.
Type: Fey changelings are humanoids with the changeling subtype.
Size: Fey changelings are Medium creatures and thus receive no bonuses or penalties due to their size.
Speed: Fey changelings have a base speed of 30 feet.
Languages: Fey changelings begin play speaking Aklo, Common, and Sylvan. Fey changelings with high intelligence scores can choose from the following: Draconic, Dwarven, Elven, Giant, Goblin, or Orc
Natural Armor: Fey changelings have a +1 natural armor bonus to their Armor Class.
Fey Damage Resistance: Fey changelings have DR 5/cold iron.
Feat and Skill Racial Traits
Magical Racial Traits
Object of Desire: Fey changelings add +1 to their caster level when casting charm person and charm monster.
Movement Racial Traits
Offense Racial Traits
Natural Weapons: Fey changelings have two claw attacks that deal 1d4 damage. These are primary natural attacks.
Senses Racial Traits
Low-Light Vision: Fey changelings can see twice as far as a race with normal vision in conditions of dim light.
Weakness Racial Traits
Other Racial Traits
A changeling inherits one of the following racial traits, depending on the fey parent's type:
Hulking Changeling: The changeling gains a +1 racial bonus on melee damage.
Green Widow: The changeling gains a +2 racial bonus on Bluff checks against creatures that are sexually attracted to her.
Sea Lungs: The changeling may hold her breath for a number of rounds equal to three times her Constitution before she risks drowning.

Fun and useful program. I did find that kobolds are missing their perception skill bonus. Is there any way to make corrections to stuff like this? Is it possible to add in or create new traits in any way? I'm sure plenty of us would like to be able to expand on the info and options presented. Thanks for the program again. :)

Some bugs with it I am experiencing:
When I first open the program a pop-up box asking me to select a race appears, but no matter which race I pick nothing happens. The pop-up box stays there it doesn't go away. I can bypass this by clicking on the task bar and closing that pop-up window to get to the programs main window.
However, when I do anything in the program I get an "Unhandled Exception" error. It happens every time I type in a box or select from a dropdown menu. I can ignore the error and things seem to keep working, but it just keeps popping up over and over again every time I do an action.

The Bobby Llama |

Okay power users, I've got a customization guide up that documents the structure and function of the XML data files. I'll do some work on the program for better error handling on these files to make it easier on you, so you should see a new update in a couple of days.
I did find that kobolds are missing their perception skill bonus.
For some reason, the ARG kobolds don't have the bonus but the Bestiary ones do. I'm inclined to leave it as is unless folks feel strongly it should be changed.
@DonDuckie & Oceanshieldwolf: Sorry guys, early on I had considered doing this web-based, but I think doing a web UI that I'd be happy with would have been too much of a hassle and distract from the rest of the project.

Alexander Augunas Contributor |

Very cool, but I'm having an issue viewing the Rulebook version of the races. Hopefully that gets resolved in the near future. That said, this is very helpful. A little more guideline on how XML works would have been nice (took me about 10 minutes to figure out through trial, error, and copy/pasting formatting cues from the provided XML files).

New update today that adds better validation and error messaging when loading data files.
@StarMartyr365 & Solusek: Okay, so it seems your problem is being caused by that first popup window not being able to close itself. I made a minor change in today's update that might address it, but it's a guess at best. I must confess that I'm doubtful it will work, but I don't have much to go on (I am also on Win7 x64, so that rules out the most obvious source of the problem).

Actually, never mind. I figured it out. I had Bite as a racial trait, but my race was Tiny size. Which... doesn't make much sense to me. After all, in real life, there are plenty of insects that are capable of biting. Whatever.

A minor bug. I downloaded a fresh copy to verify, same issue.
Basically, it opens the program and a race choice window when I load the program, but none of the choices work for the race choice and you can't click anything on the program.
Forcibly closing the window with the race choice creates the following error message and ask if I want to continue.

** spoiler omitted **...
Ah, looks like it goes to the "load" option, which lacks a confirmation button. So I can see the options, click one, but not actually load anything, nor can I exit the load screen without forcibly closing the window.

A little bit of a necro, stumbled across this while looking around to see if the tool had been updated. Guess not. :(
I've been saving useful little design/DM tools on my Google Drive, so in case something ever happens to the Wayback Machine, here's a mirror.
I tend to design a lot of races (I'm the resident content creator for our table since we like making crap up, and I'm hoping to start building content books anyway) and this lightweight little thing really speeds up the process. I may end up updating this in the future with newer content. Suppose I'll post an upddate here if I do! :P
