Pathfinder Class Matrix

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Liberty's Edge

Looking for the ultimate Class matrix visual? I think this one that I made is pretty good. Let me know what you think.

I threw this one together last night so that I could explain this to my 7 year old daughter.

Go to Dropbox Pathfinder Class Matrix.

I was inspired by Greywulf and Timothy Wickham. You can Google for their versions.

I don't make any claims that this is accurate. I certainly don't make claims on the graphics as those were mostly from the Paizo web site.

...but I do claim this is nifty and makes it easy to explain to a kid.

Enjoy!

What is the Artificer and Ardent? I don't recall seeing those anywhere.

Liberty's Edge

Not sure to be honest. But there is hope. WotC does have some info on those two classes. The Ardent sounds like some kind of Psionic brute. The Artificer sounds like a crafter of magical items.

If you are unsure why include them?

Also, what exactly is this Matrix? Is it supposed to show some sort of relationship between the classes?

And what exactly does this have to do with society play?

Liberty's Edge

The matrix is to help people who don't live and breath RPG. In other words, it is for humans with a work and social life.

It clearly shows you the base classes of Fighter, Cleric, Wizard, and Rogue. The intent is to let a new player see that all other classes are derivatives of the previous four. Intersections and blends in a Venn diagram kinda way.

I'll repost it to Patherfinder general discussion.

What is this supposed to tell us?

I'll just note that, as Dylos suggests, artificers and ardents are 4E D&D classes, and don't exist in Pathfinder (at least, not in anything that Paizo has published). So, if you're wanting this to be a matrix of Pathfinder classes, I'd take those out.

Its kind of cool looking, but as a tool it is difficult to use.

I laud the effort to put an aid up but I don't get it. What's it for and how do you use it? Explain what to a kid? If it's not accurate what's the ise and how can it be nifty? If this is a tool I'd like to know how it works. Please it explain.

Cheers
Mark

I think it´s there to show what the different classes are compared to each other.
So for example a Paladin is a mix of Fighter and Cleric, a Alchemist a mix of Wizard and Rogue...

I think it´s quite good to explain it to someone who doesn´t know much about the system.

So a Bard is a mix of Anti-Paladin and Alchemist? And a Magus is a mix of Paladin and Anti-Paladin?

Couple of things.

First off, you're in the wrong forum. This forum is for Pathfinder Society Organized play. Rather than repost a thread, I would suggest asking to have this one moved via the flagging system.

Secondly, I strongly disagree that it clearly shows anything. I looked at it and couldn't understand a thing it was trying to say, other than "here are the classes". Add to that the confusion it can cause over classes like the Ninja, Anti-Paladin, and Samurai, which are not derivative classes, but are rather completely alternative versions of another class (which is important to know when working with those classes). Honestly, I think this diagram is more confusing than it is useful. Sure it looks nice, but I guess I just don't see the content.

Unfortunately, no one can be told what The Matrix is.

Sorry, couldn't help it :P

Flagged for deletion. Thanks for the feedback.

@Quantum, The Matrix movie reference was funny. Aside from that, you guys need to get into the sunshine and go for a jog or a bike ride.

Scarab Sages

I take the F$*%in' blue pill.

I went ahead and googled the reference made in the first post.
Greywulf version

I see what it's trying to do, but i don't think it works with out as simply as intended.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view) Paizo doesn't delete anything except offensive or otherwise inappropriate posts. This will remain for all eternity.

No need to get snippy. You asked for opinions and opinions were given. As a tool it's not at all useful. Maybe there's a way to do what you're looking to do, but that diagram was not at all accurate.

I thought it was neat.

What's an Ardent?

or an Artificer for that matter, thought those were an Eberron class?

I merged the threads on this topic. Please use the 'thread is in wrong forum' flag instead of creating duplicate threads.

Ardent is from D&D 4e.
Artifacer was originally in D&D 3e, Eberron.

I think this matrix is a great idea. I'd love to see one with just the Pathfinder classes.

I also removed the link from the original post. Please don't redistribute Paizo's artwork. You may want to take a look at the Community Use Policy.

Or until all the servers hosting it are disconnected.

Minor correction however, Paizo deletes nothing. They just hide 'deleted' posts so that only mods can see them. Hence why the posts per page doesn't change.

A few comments:
1. You definitely need to explain how the matrix is supposed to be used better. It seems to work alright if you take Cleric, Fighter, Rogue, Wizard as reference points for the rest of the chart.

2. You should have better resolution, right now you have every "hybrid" class halfway between the core classes when some of them are much closer to one or the other (ie Cavalier is not halfway between a Fighter and a Cleric).

3. You should only have PF material in there if this is meant for people new to pathfinder.

4. Class selection never really seems to be a problem until you take archetypes into consideration. I would love to see a chart like this with archetypes included.

5. Don't be a jerk to people who are giving you feedback.

This cart (got a look prior to link down) doesn't make any sense to me even using the one Tal_Akaan linked as the template example.

For a start the continuem between Fighter and Cleric should be filled by:

Fighter
Cavalier
Paladin/Antipaladin
Inquisitor
Cleric

With Oracle sticking out off Cleric and kinda leaning at Wizard.

*Edit*

I think that if you wanted to do a chart like this right you'll need a little interactive animation to really do it justice. If the goal is to show people new to the hobby how different classes (and archetypes) link to each other, then dynamic is the only way to do it right. As you shift through the options it's not all nice clean single line paths. Some things overlap in odd ways. Take the Druid and Ranger. Then the Summoner and Alchemist. There are more branches then "this is the hybrid line between fighter and something else" as the roles some class fill can be partly done by others while not being truely related in any other way.
