Thank God for electric kettles and English tea. I forgot to brew coffee this morning, and remembered with ten minutes to spare. Electric kettle boils water in under five minutes. Chuck obscene quantity of tea bags in thermos, allow to brew while heading to the subway. Am proper caffeinated for Black Friday retail work.

Wall-o-random-thoughts:
NobodysDad: "It doesn't make any sense. Why would NobodysHome stay home instead of coming here? It's only a 1-hour drive, and he can't be THAT busy."
NobodysBrother: "Maybe he's going to flunk out of grad school."
NobodysDad: "..."
I got a full apology and he never started in again after that one.
However, NobodysWife needs new jeans and we decided we're going to putter over to San Francisco to go shopping at the Levi's Store. I am actually curious as to what it's like to be out and about on a Black Friday. I hope I do not get trampled.
This year should be... interesting. My uncle's final request was that everyone make a donation to one of a number of animal shelters (he was a huge animal lover), so I cut a check for $100 to the S.F. SPCA. No one collected it at the wake, so I've been carrying the stupid thing around for a couple of weeks. I'll see whether I can discreetly drop it in the pot and flee...
Anyway, may everyone have the Black Friday they desire, whether it be shopping like a maniac, curling up with a warm cuppa in front of a fire/TV/scenic vista, or whatevs.
I'm going to do the ultimate diet-killer: Purchase a pair of pants currently too small for me in the hopes of eventually fitting them.
Wish me luck!

It's a beautiful, sunny, only-slightly-breezy 62* outside. My Black Friday will be spent with the house open and the fans on rather than the heat, at least some time spent out walking to burn off the Thanksgiving gorge, eating leftovers, and working on various projects at home while I enjoy the fact that I don't have to be at work again until Monday.
And also hoping that this latest bout of insomnia passes before then.

You should see all the crap we've had on the shelves for months, which no one bought, then bam! It's thanksgiving and suddenly everyone must have it! Half the time, it isn't even on sale, their kid sees an ad before a cartoon 3 months ago, say "mom, I must have that!" " ask Santa, maybe he'll bring it" then it's forgotten until Christmas when everyone else said the same thing and is looking for it.
No one likes to hear "we had 10 of them 3 weeks ago".

Anyone remember where in S.F. Rosita's Pier 1 job is? And is it Pier 1, or one of its clones?
I'd love to sneak in and try to shop there and figure out who she is (more fun if you don't figure it out), but considering I forget both the store name and the location I'm probably going to be Epic Fail Man.
(I figure she's already working, so it's pretty unlikely she can help me out...)

I believe it's Costco.
No; I think it's the "Cost Plus World Market" flagship store... But the "Cost" in the name was key. Thanks!
EDIT: Ah, found it, in North Beach. That's a heck of a walk from Union Square (over a mile and a half), so unlikely we'll pop in there today. Ah, well, next time we're going to Betelnut...

West coast sure does like putting the word "cost" into every store name, huh.
I bet there's a liquor store called "Cost Less Beer and Spirits. Whereas, in Wisconsin it's just called The Booze Haus.
Haus is key, you can't trust a business without Haus in the name, or at least it needs a polish, Suisse, or German name name for it.

So far the day is off to an interesting start.
First off, I woke up early to surprised the wife with the Xbox one. Only I didn't know her email or password for her account. So I made breakfast of leftovers and waited. Most days my wife is up at an ungodly hour, saying her arm hurts (carpal tunnel) or she has to go to the bathroom(and hog it forever).
But not this time.
No, sleeping beauty slept and slept and slept for hours on end, waking up at minutes to 9. Normally I would not care, but I remember things going wrong with setups before, so i stayed in front of an impatient xbox one tapping controls to keep it from falling asleep.
She eventually woke up, we muddled though the email address and password guessing game, and then tried to get games going.
It took forever to find the spot to put in the password for gears of war redemption, and we scratched our head over the poor layout of the Xbox one home page (s). So we got the download only to realize it is nearly fifty gigs of game- it's not downloading any time soon. We thought about starting a movie, but all of our stuff is on- you guessed it- xbox 360, so no movies really. So we shrugged and went ahead with dragon age inquisition, which, to our surprise, ALSO NEEDED TO DOWNLOAD. SO we once again shrugged and played the waiting game. Since it was a disc and not a download, inquisition started a lot faster than gears of war ever did, and I am enjoying the 80s Storm from the X-men character the wife and I made together. It's disturbing how much she looks like my late mother in law....my wife actually screamed in one of the cut scenes...almost exactly like her.

Fawesome!
The character creator for DA:I is pretty sweet. I think it's the best I've seen, but my experience is limited.
I don't think it's the best, although it is detail oriented. I think it gives you enough to let you make what you want without going into artiste category.
Then again, I can't draw to save my life- maybe some of the old bitterness is coming back.

OK, I've "kind of" done the Black Friday thing now. Admittedly, not leaving the house 'til after noon meant the freeways were empty, but it was pretty amazing crossing Market Street and seeing a sea of people far greater than either the Christmas season or rush hour can compete with.
But...
...we bought a few Levis for us and some clothes for the kids, never stood in line more than 10 minutes, were told we were getting 40-50% off, and, whatever...
Just seemed like an unusually busy shopping day with an unusual number of stores having sales.
Meh. My opinion hasn't changed. Black Friday. Could take it or leave it. Not particularly swayed by it.

David M Mallon wrote:Thanksgiving dinner with my folks, my aunt, and my Irish grandparents. Lots of awkward pauses, talking about death, complaining of various aches and pains, and stories about second and third cousins. At least my mother hasn't given me the "make sure I get cremated after I die so you can take all of my gold teeth" speech yet, so that's good. That sounds a lot like my last familial visit. And only because I'm getting better at not engaging when they try to start the drama. And this is why they've been limited to no more than two visits per year and never at thanksgiving. I can't cut it down any more than that without moving out of state. :)
It's rarely dramatic-- more like an episode of a really boring sitcom. There's little bad blood in my family, but plenty of weird blood. My aunt has been compiling a list of snippets of conversations with my grandparents, and is planning to release them as a book titled "Strange Old People."
Are you sure we're not related? :P
I have a second cousin that shares a last name, but he's not blood related.

Best night of work yet!!
Simon and Simon lady got taken to the woodshed for arguing semantics with one of the managers.
The rest of the newbies are losing it, of course considering it's been open non stop since 5 last night they're hitting the bottom of the barrel. Pretty much only 3 competent people working on the floor tonight.
