Overall Map
---------------------
Okay, this is where the OOC thread goes.
Check in and start to think of how you spent the first three days of a seven day cruise.
Each guest has saved or horded $200 US per day to spend on restaurants, clothes, gambling, off shore trips, and other such things. The voyage is planned to be seven days which gives $1400 US.
You should decide how much is in bills, debit cards, credit card limits, and Traveler's Cheques. Good and bad will go with each form of money as the world comes apart and eventually, none of these will be worth anything.
Crew people on the ship have meals provided in the crew areas (below deck 2 on the ship are the crew decks). Crew have more freedom to travel around the ship but are expected to avoid 'mingling' with guests out of their duties. Crew do earn money on the ship though payment is always at the end of the cruise (to avoid people choosing to leave during the middle of the cruise).
Geoffrey Whittaker |
Geoffrey will spend the first day getting used to the experience - relaxing by the indoor pool, doing some rock-climbing when the indolence drives him nuts, and then visiting the Viking Crown Lounge for dinner.
On day two, in addition to going ashore at wherever the cruise-ship calls into port (and taking lots of pictures on his digital camera), Geoffrey will spend time exercising in the on-board gymnasium, and then, just for fun, try his hand at the bungee trampoline.
On day three, he will spend time up at the bow of the ship, his eyes glued to his binoculars, as he scans the sky for sea-birds, and tries to spot dolphin pods in the waters around the liner.
In terms of money, Geoffrey would have $1000 in cash, as well as another $400 on a debit card, for if/when cash payments cannot be used. He dislikes leaving an electronic paper trail, and has a deep distrust of living on 'credit'. I imagine by the end of Day 3, he would have remaining $700/$1000, and $300/$400.
Vic Foster |
Assuming crew has the same $1400 allowance, we'll say Vic has his it split about evenly - $700 credit limit (Discover card) and $700, a few hundreds and the rest in smaller denominations. He's pretty stingy in general and will probably stick to cash - mostly buying a cheap little trinket or two for the folks back home, maybe a lunch or two, and ponying up for the more thrilling activities (if he can do so without it being considered mingling).
He's been doing this for a while now, so I imagine it's all become painfully routine (perhaps a bit dull). As such I haven't noted what he'll be doing day-to-day.
Vic'll probably be teaching/lifeguarding/whatever the rock climbing (closest thing to an adrenaline rush on the ship, I imagine). When not working, he'll probably be keeping to the crew areas (he takes the 'no mingling' thing seriously, and he's not prone to networking amongst strangers anyway), most likely in his bunk reading car magazines or something to that effect.
He'll spend some time in the pool or at the gym, working out a bit or dropping in on other athletic trainer type crew member buddies. He'll also definitely try out the bungee trampolines... probably a couple of times. In the evenings he will likely spend a while leaning on the railing and ocean gazing. He will of course be taking his meals in the crew area.
Wait, there are suspension bridges on this ship? Ships need bridges? (Like, the kind of bridge you put to go over something, not the bridge that's a control room). I really don't know that much about cruises or maritime stuff in general apparently! Also, the wordplay in Latte-tudes is almost offensive to me. I don't think you could get away with that without a captive audience.
Smerg |
The suspension bridge allows people to walk from the forecastle to the aft-castle without having to descend several decks. It also allows people to have that 'high up' feeling as they walk between points.
Yeah, there is a fair word-play in naming on tourist places like this. Latte-tudes is, of course, a coffee bar style lounge.
You can read what you like, the ship has a library (not major metropolitan style but a good high school level one with mostly popular titles. It has books left by people and the ships trade books through an intra-library service).
Yes, everyone (crew included) have some money.

Eh. I'm a little leery of small groups, both character wise and player wise (seems our rules mashup scared quite a few folks off. Shame there's not a current version of d20 Modern. Or heck, a SAGA SRD.)
That said, I doubt we're gonna get many-if-any more folks and it'd be a shame to break our forward momentum to trawl for more. I'm fine either way if you guys are.
Geoffrey Whittaker |
Small groups can be problematic, in traditional D&D at least, but with less character distinction in this current rules set, a smaller group does not necessarily mean that some 'aspect' will not be covered by the existing PCs.
That being said, we certainly are not a particularly combat savvy party, so we should not be especially gung ho when it comes to combat...
I am nonetheless ready to roll :-)

ZebulonXenos |
Huh. I'd have thought it was just the opposite myself, but perhaps that's personal bias.
I went ahead and actually gave Vic an appearance and I remembered I never gave him a 'treasured item'. I'm thinking an old pocket knife - maybe Swiss Army. Not really useful or even especially well preserved, but the first real 'man gift' his dad ever gave him and something of a treasure, even if he's not as big an outdoorsman as the old man.

Sorry, I saw your post in recruiting but I was working on my other game threads.
The character looks good.
Occupation choices would be;
Entrepreneur
Choose two from Deception, Persuasion, Gather Information, Knowledge (Bureaucracy), Knowledge (Current Events), or Knowledge (Technology) to add as trained skills or add +1 to a skill you already have (if on the list).
or
Criminal
Choose two from Mechanics, Deception, Stealth, Knowledge (Social Sciences), and Gather Information to add as trained skills or add +1 to a skill you already possess (if on the list).
---------------------
Let me know and I'll work your character into the game.
Smerg |
I'll go for Entrepreneur, if that's okay.
I'll add Knowledge Current Events and Knowledge Technology as trained skills. Before I solidify that though, what exactly is know. technology as compared to mechanics and use computer? How do they interplay off each other?
Knowledge Technology means that you follow the magazines, TV shows, podcasts, and blogs on what is the latest and greatest of 'toys'. It provides a bonus when doing things related to technology for the other skills and allows you to recognize manufactures, devices, and know where to go to purchase these items.
At a glance you would have a chance to know by a logo which company provided the security system to an area. You would recognize the difference between a phone made by Sony and a phone made by Motorola.
You can also speak 'nerd' or 'tech jargon'.
-----------------
Mechanics and Use Computer are used when you want to actually interact with the items. This can be to operate, repair, or modify the items.
----------------
What has your character been doing for the first three days of the cruise and what were you doing on Fiesta night?
Geoffrey Whittaker |
Just to clarify, my understanding was that the occupation simply added the skills selected to the list you could choose trained skills from (i.e. giving you extra options, rather some extra 'free' trained skills), or gave you a +1 to the skill if you could already choose it. Is that correct?

Oops, you are correct. It adds the skills to the list of possible known skills or adds +1 to a skill if you are already trained in it.
Sorry on that Hank.
Hank Macon |
LOL, darn. Two new trained skills would have been much better! I think I am going to make Know. Tech. as a trained skill. Living in Vegas hotels with a lot of disposable income, I am sure he would be a 'gadget' guy, always wanting the new cool toy.
I will update his sheet later this evening after work and post what I did during the first few days...

Are there still spots open? Not sure exactly which rules/modified rules you are using, but I can scroll back through the Thread.
Character concepts
1: 'Plucky Kid'(13-16 or so) Escaped from his parents early on evening three, slipped into a lifeboat, hiding under the tarp, looking for a place to read/listen to his i Pod,etc...His Mom and new Step-Dad (Jim) Awoke with a cramp in his neck, and the feeling that he was gonna 'get it', since he hadn't come been in the stateroom when Mom&Jim (He refuses to call him Dad, no matter how hard he tries to 'be cool').
2: Jose Delgado, Janitor, spent some time in the criminal world in Mexico,car-chopping, ran Illegals over the border, nothing too Sinister, basically a good guy, but happy to 'blend in' on the Ship, rather than face the authorities back in Mexico.
3: 'The Amazing Ambrosius!': Performer, Magician, Knife-Thrower,One-Man Carny. (Are you allowing actual Arcane classes? If so, this could be pretty fun, otherwise, I'd make him a Rogue-Type with a lot of sleight of hand).
Just a thought.

Yup, I was looking for 1 more to fully round out the group.
I'd think that suggestion 2 or 3 would be better. No arcane classes being used.
For character creation rules it would be a mixture of this thread and the recruiting thread in looking for players.
It was a bit of mix of rules with mostly Star Wars SAGA modified to be more like Modern d20.

Jose Delgado it is,then.I need to look through the thread again, I am not familiar with SAGA,Really, but it shouldn't be too difficult.
I think I will change him from Janitor to working in the engine room (Works better with his background working on cars in Mexico).-Uriel

Sounds good!
I was going to make him a Scout (He used to steal cars for a ring). I see that we get one bonus Trained? I suppose that would be some sort of Mechanical/Automotive Skill...
what bonus does Occupation give? I can't seem to find my d20 modern either...dammit.
Rules on starting with firearms? I figured that he would have a pistol or two hidden away, in case the authorities (Or more importantly, his former employers) came looking for him.
Hank Macon |
Hank will divvy up his bankroll into about 900 cash for the cash games that might happen in and around the casino, and about 500 on his credit card for some off hour internet gambling.
The first day will be a combination of getting settled in on deck, finding the closest drinking establishment, and scoping out the casino, looking for any wealthy but weak players he might exploit in some cash games later.
The second day, he will begin playing in earnest, after enjoying a nice lunch at the fanciest restaurant on the deck. This will no doubt go on well into the night.
Day three will involve sleeping late, brunch and just a bit of exercise jogging on a treadmill to clear his head. Then back to the casino to scout out his prospects.

Make a Gather Information check to see how your gambling has gone in the first few days. This represents your ability to read tells and play styles enough to predict betting patterns to maximize your card advantage.

Net went down on me earlier today (Argh!!!)
Jose Delgado is ready for DM lookover. Not sure if I covered everything.
The only Talent option that I saw was the Fringer one, so I picked that.
Edit: I looked at the d20SRD for Modern, and the Evasion fast Hero option was tempting..but I think Jury-Rig might prove very useful, and (More importantly) interesting, so I'll stick with it.

Okay Defenses are
Scout is +2 Reflex and +1 Fortitude
Reflex is 10 +1 Heroic Level +2 Scout +3 Dex = 16
Fortitude is 10 +1 Heroic Level +1 Scout +0 Con = 12
Will is 10 +1 Heroic Level +0 Scoute +1 Wis = 12
Skills & Talents
SAGA uses Mechanics skill (there is no Thievery skill) to do most of the things you'd want from Disable Device to repairing an engine to handling explosives.
Knowledge Skill should have a specified area of expertise.
A skill focus is +5 Competence bonus in SAGA rules so that will increase your Athletics skill.
The Jury-Rigger feat is fine it just needs to use the word re-roll Mechanics skill for doing quick repairs.
Run is fine
What is your 'personal' item?
What have you been doing during the first three days on the ship?
How clean a 'getaway' did you make? Any family or friends back in Mexico?
Uriel393 |
Background fixed, Personal item added, as well as his life up to boarding the ship.
As far as the last three days, since I made him a member of the crew, Jose was most likely doing his normal routine, maintenance, weekly Saturday night poker game with some of the other guys, If it is Sunday, he calls his GF from a disposable cell (He frequently buys them from whatever ports the ship visits, throwing them overboard afterward.
Poor Jose is about to get into the thick of it, I fear...At least he has a bug wrench to smash Zombies with.

My crappy straw hat ensures my insides stay my insides!
(I have already ranted, somewhere, about the avatar selection - I pretty much gave up because headwear was something I wanted and frankly digging through pages of really ugly guys and Valeros in various states of panic is no way to waste time).

I'm going to busy likely till Sunday night.
Tax Season has me in the peak of the crush and I'm the senior, single tax preparer that they like to book to every lousy shift that they can. That means I'm working Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday afternoon.
I also have other RL commitments and church to fit in there so it will be a bit till I get the next set of posting.
Shuriken Nekogami |
Am i allowed to bow/drop out of this Zombie apocalypse game?
i find it not as entertaining as i first assumed. and i already have a boatload of pbps.
i will allow Shinko to be run by the DM until it feels appropriate to drop her from the cast.
i am sorry if i was less active in this pbp.
she can become a priority zombie victim.
ZebulonXenos |
Sorry I've taken so long to reply. Bit off a little more than I can chew lately and I keep neglecting one PbP or another.
Should be OK from now on though (part of the issue was insomnia/sleep deprivation and I'm finally back on a more-or-less diurnal schedule now).
ZebulonXenos |
Uh, whoops.
In the interest of full disclosure, I realized I'd forgotten spoiler tags and deleted a post instead of editing it (I have no idea why I chose to do that, in retrospect). Of course that rerolled the dice. The previous results were a 17+2 and a 15-1 so technically I lose out there.
So if anybody saw that, it was me being incompetent and not me trying to cheat. I'll be sure to use the edit button from now on.
