Um... so... crap. I don't know if the judges' boards save the items that were submitted or not but, as I have lost the file I'd saved my item into, I will simply ask Clark if he can "look up" my item in the judge's board.

Effigy of Lost Souls

That's what it was called. It was an item that could be burned to keep undead at bay.

If you can't look it up or don't have the time/inclination/etc. to find it, that's cool. I was just really hoping for some feedback on it and I can't seem to actually find the file anywhere...

EDIT: Gary found it! He c/p'd the contents a few posts down. You rule, Gary!

I'm in the same boat. I think I found what was the original rough draft of my item, all half done and so full of errors and weird crap that I'm not entirely sure what the heck it was *wrote the first draft on a cocktail napkin at something like five in the morning.*

I think the name of my item was HELM OF IRON ORDER. It was a helm you held like a lantern that gave bonuses if you're lawful and hindrences to anyone whos chaotic near by.

Also, I'd like to throw in with everyone so far and give a big thanks to Clark for taking time out of his obviously hectic schedule to give feed back for all of us. THANK YOU!!!!!

Hey Clark Thanks in advance....

THE BONE METRONOME
Aura strong transmutation, CL 17
Slot--; Price 29,600 gp; Weight 1 lb.
DESCRIPTION

A slender bone pendulum sways within the heart of this decrepit instrument. A haunting tick-tock echoes off its petrified wooden frame.

When the pendulum is pulled to either side of the metronome and released, its clicking tempo grants its user a +2 competence bonus on Perform (any instrument) checks.

Furthermore, by adjusting the tempo of the metronome as a standard action, its owner may affect up to 5 creatures (but not herself) as if they were targeted by either haste or slow for up to 5 rounds each per day. The duration of these effects need not be consecutive rounds.
Finally, if the owner (and only the owner) ever dismantles the metronome as a full round action, she may act as if a time stop has been cast.

The metronome’s pendulum speeds up during haste, it is sluggish during slow, and it is absent during time stop. Thus, only one effect can be active at any given time.
Once dismantled, the metronome cannot be reassembled.

Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, haste, slow, time stop; Cost 14,800 gp.

Greetings Clark.
I understand you are profoundly busy, but I'd also appreciate your input/feedback on my item too.

Here goes;

Figurine of Wondrous Power, Iron Tiger
Aura moderate transmutation; CL 11th
Slot ---; Price 19,200 gp; Weight ---

Description
This rough chunk of iron ore has a distinct outline of a tiger, crouched as if poised to pounce. When animated, an iron tiger becomes a normal adult male tiger (MM 281-282) under the command of its possessor. The item can be used once per day for up to 1 hour per day. A separate command word enables the possessor to call upon a dire tiger instead (MM 65) however, after three transformations into dire tiger form, the figurine loses all its magical properties. In addition, once per day, the iron tiger (in either form) may emit a roar (as per the shout spell, CL 11th PH 278). Although it behaves as a living creature, the iron tiger retains its iron-like consistency which grants it hardness 10. (This renders it vulnerable to rust monster attacks, as well as spell effects like rusting grasp.) If slain while animated it reverts to statuette form and cannot be used until 1 full week has passed.

Construction
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, animate objects, shout; Cost 9,600 gp, 768 XP

*I think, upon reflection, I realize some of the flaws in my item. Of course, like many others, I intend to enter RPG Superstar 2010, and anything you can provide to help me along to better Wondrous Item design would be truly appreciated.* Heh heh... I still really liked my Figurine of Wondrous Power... those have always been favorites of mine.

Thanks to Clark, Wolfgang, Sean and all the judges.
And of course, congrats to the top 32 and the alts. I will be watching these next rounds with interest.
Good Luck everyone!

Regards,
Dean, the Minstrel Wyrm

Iron Requiem
Aura moderate conjuration; CL 7th
Slot none; Price 33,600 gp; Weight

Description
This six holed flute is made of pitted wood and held together with iron rings. When the proper notes are played, the sad melody summons earth spirits angry with the removal of metal ore from the ground. These spirits pass through a metallic item that the player chooses and return the minerals back to the earth. The process can weaken or destroy the item.

The flute can be used to make a sunder attempt as a ranged touch attack against a metal target. This does not provoke an attack of opportunity. If the attack is successful, the item takes 5d6 damage. If the damage is more than the hardness of the item, the object is considered broken. If the damage exceeds the hardness and hit points of the item, the item is destroyed. If used against creatures made of metal, the creature takes 3d6 damage on a successful ranged touch attack.

Range of the effect is 30 feet. The flute can be used 3 times per day.

These wrought iron helms are sealed shut, leaving only the eye slits open, allowing it to be used as a bull’s-eye lantern that cannot be extinguished by non-magical means. They are rumored to contain the severed head of a convicted criminal, but few are brave enough to ask those who bear them the specifics of their creation. A permanent magic circle against chaos is centered on the helm, and when held they allow the bearer to cast both heroism and holy smite three times per day as a 7th level caster. The holy smite affects chaotic creatures as evil, and lawful as good, the heroism can only affect lawful creatures.

Khalil’s Gift of Freedom

Aura faint transmutation (none while transmuted); CL 3
Slot -; Price 580 gp; Weight -

Description

Holding this small lock pick against living skin for 10 minutes will allow it to be absorbed into the body at the point of contact. Once per hour its host may attempt to retrieve the tool by passing a DC 15 Constitution check. If successful, the lock pick will slowly emerge from its point of entry (typically the wrist or tongue). While absorbed, this item has no detectable physical presence or magical aura. The lock pick will remain permanently absorbed into its host until retrieved or dispelled. This is a single use magic effect, and once retrieved this item is simply a small masterwork lock pick.

This lock pick does not represent a full set of thieves’ tools, and incurs the standard -2 improvised tools circumstance penalty to all Disable Device checks other than attempts to pick simple to average locks. An alternate version of this item exists as a small serrated blade, suitable for cutting rope bonds.

Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, alter self, misdirection; Cost 310 gp

Shard of Fractured Timelines:
A shard of fractured timelines looks like an ordinary quartz. Twice per day you may look through the shard and see several iterations of what may happen if you attempt certain tasks. It will let you see what would happen if you fail or succeed at your next skill check, but not what happens during it, for example using a shard on a search for traps would show you disarming the trap and you getting attacked by it, but not where the trap was.
In addition a chaotic character may equip a shard as a monocle as a standard action. Doing so provides a +1 insight bonus to all saves and to armor class. After wearing a shard in this manner for one minute per day, it will start to show you things that likely will not happen and all bonuses become an equal penalty due to bad information.

Allow me to join the chorus of people that think you are awesome, Clark. Seriously, you must be a glutton for punishment to do this, but I definitely appreciate it. Anyway, feel free to let me know exactly what you thought of my item with no sugar-coating, I can handle it.

That goes to everyone else too, if you have any thoughts on this item.

Also, this version may be slightly different from the version submitted as I did a bit of last-minute editing on the submit form that I'm not sure I saved, but this version should get everything across the way it was (just some wording changed I think).

VESTMENTS OF THE UNSEEN PRIESTHOOD
Aura none; CL 1
Slot body; Weight 7 lb.; Price 2,000 gp

DESCRIPTION

The vestments of the unseen priesthood appear to be a simple set of clerical robes with a holy symbol, even to detect magic. In reality, these robes allow the wearer to masquerade as a priest of any deity. Simply by donning the robes and speaking the command word followed by the name of a god the vestments transform into those of that god's priests. In addition, the wearer's alignment is completely hidden. Instead, he gains an aura as per a cleric of the chosen deity and of the wearer's class level (see the cleric class feature, p. 20).

These robes were originally created by cultists of Asmodeus to allow them to walk unmolested amongst the normal population, simply posing as followers of other deities. The command word to affect the change is usually in Infernal and worked into the ritual opening of the congregation's meetings, such as "Hail Asmodeus, He Who Binds Us".

Revenant Choker
Aura faint necromancy; CL 5th;
Slot neck; Price 10,800 gp; Weight —
DESCRIPTION
Rumored to have been worn by the living minions of a powerful necromancer, this
choker of tiny hematite skulls will only be donned by the most vindictive and
reckless of characters. When the wearer drops below 0 hit points, he will suffer the
effects of the death knell spell. If the wearer knows the true nature of the choker and
wears it anyway, he does not get a saving throw vs. the spell-effect. Otherwise, the
wearer must make a DC 13 Will save. One round after dying, the corpse is animated as
if by an animate dead spell, acquiring the zombie template. The zombie will then
attempt to attack the killer of its former self. If the killer is gone, the zombie will
attack the nearest being. If the zombie is alone, it will wander until it finds a being to
attack, or is commanded or controlled. If the zombie is destroyed, the character can be
resurrected normally.
The choker needs to be worn for twenty-four hours before it will function.

Birthstone Pendant
Aura: Moderate Abjuration; CL: 7th
Slot: Neck; Price: 2,500gp (standard), 18,500gp (greater); Weight: -

Description

A dimly glowing birthstone is inlaid in a silver pendant, surrounded by protective runes and astrological symbols. There are two versions of this pendant; standard and greater.

Birthstone Pendant:
• +1 Insight Bonus to AC

Greater Birthstone Pendant:
• +1 Insight Bonus to AC
• +1 Insight Bonus to Saves
• 1/day: When exposed to any damage source, suffer the minimum amount of damage. (All damage dice are considered to show 1’s.)

The final benefit of the greater pendant is not effective against the Maximize Spell or similar effects, and does not extend to any allies within the effect. The use of this power is declared before damage is rolled.

Greater Birthstone Pendants are never random treasure, but must be specially crafted for the individual. If someone with the same astrological sign recovers another person’s greater pendant, they gain the benefits associated with the standard pendant. Theoretically, two people born on the same day, with closely linked destinies (i.e., twins), could benefit from the same greater pendant.

Construction
Requirements: Craft Wondrous Items; Stoneskin; Cost: 1,250gp (regular), 9,250gp (greater)

Bloodbark Bracers
Aura: Strong; CL: 6th
Slot: Hands; Price: 33,300gp; Weight: 1lb

Description
These bracers appear formed from a single strip of deep reddish-brown bark that was taken from an ancient tree. After 24 hours the wearer becomes one with the natural environment granting the wearer a +3 natural armor bonus and the continuous ability to pass without trace.
Bloodbark Bracers have the following spell-like abilities useable one per round:
- Detect plants and animals (at will)
- Detect snares and pits (at will)
- Speak with animals (at will)
- Entangle (DC11) (3/day)
The bracers only function in a natural environment.

Construction
Requirements: Craft Wondrous Item, barkskin, detect plants or animals, entangle, pass without trace, speak with animals; Cost: 16,650gp

Design notes: I reduced the total price based upon the natural environment restriction.

Now, I suspect I fell into the swiss army knife spell in a can.

Any criticism will help me do better next year Clark. THANKS!

My original concept was that these were actually treant bark, torn from a living treant, and it would give plant shape 3, to take the form of a treant, it was too expensive, instead of starting over, my procrastination lead me to add extra abilities beyond the natural armor and pass without trace.

I'm glad you thought it was a neat item at least. I can see the "spell-in-a-box" viewpoint, but I politely disagree that that is all there is to the item.

What I was going for was an iconic item in noir and intrigue-heavy play. The lady gives a sweet kiss, and the next thing you know, you wake up sans coin purse and/or in dire straits (think of Saffron's "Goodnight Kiss" in Firefly). I haven't seen anything that would allow a character do this unless they were a caster, and most sneaky types aren't wizards or sorcerers. To me, it seemed like one of those "head slap, why isn't that in the game?" type things. Then I expanded the idea to a kit, as it made sense to me that thieve's guilds and the like would pass these out to high level rogues. I also tried to make sure the item wouldn't be restricted to female PCs, because we all know how rare those are, by tying some of the effects to the case rather than the rouge.

Anyway, thanks again for taking a look and commenting on my submission!! I truly appreciate the feedback.

Hey!! Another Rouge! We should start up a cosmetics line. ;-)

I'm extremely curious if one of the changes I made from this item's original version was a bad thing... They say to always go with your first instinct. I have the feeling I'm going to kick myself.

CANE OF YOUTHFUL VIGOR

Aura Moderate Conjuration; CL 10th
Slot -; Price 40,800 gp; Weight 2 lb.

DESCRIPTION

This appears to be a polished wooden walking stick, about 3 feet long, crafted from ash or oak. One end is sculpted to facilitate use as a handle, and the other end is tipped in brass. Creatures utilizing the cane as a walking or standing aid will discover the following properties.

* The cane suspends the negative physical effects of aging as long as it is held. This effect applies only to negative ability score modifiers, and has no other effect on the age of the creature using the cane. A 90 year old human will still appear to be a 90 year old human, and his maximum age will remain the same.

* Three times per day, as a free action, the cane may increase it's owner's base land speed by 30 feet for 1 round.

* The cane may be used as a club with a +2 enhancement.

Requirements Craft Wonderous Items, Restoration, Expeditious Retreat, DC 11 Craft (woodworking), Cost 20,400 gp

...Thanks.

Clark and anyone else: I decided before the judging waas released that my entry wasn't very superstar. I really think lower level parties and parties with great teamwork would like it, but it isn't a magic key that conjures doors when you need them most. I also knew it might be a gamble to tinker woth the "one slot" mechanic, but I liked the idea. I see above somewhere that the word "attune" might have also made trouble for me.

That said, I'd appreciate feedback on the SpellShare Bracelets from anyone who feels compelled to appraise them:

SPELLSHARE BRACELETS
Aura moderate evocation; CL 7th
Slot hands or feet; Price 13,500 gp; Weight -
These magical charms are worn on either the ankle or wrist. The bracelets automatically attune to other spellshare bracelets when left in contact overnight.
Once per day as a free action, the bracelet enables its owner to avail himself of a spell cast on a wearer of another, attuned spellshare bracelet within 30 feet. The spell's original target still receives the full effect of the shared spell. Only spells of third level or lower can be shared in this way.
No more than three bracelets can be attuned to one another at the same time. Casters are unable to deny the wearer of an attuned bracelet access to the shared spell.
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, imbue with spell ability, DC 12 Craft (jewelry) check; [b]Cost 6,750 gp

I would love to learn the feedback on my item. Unfortunately, the copy I was sure I had saved to my computer has disappeared. I know it was called something like "Hunter's Nosepiece". Thanks muchly!

Dark Archive Star Voter Season 7

RIBBON OF DISJUNCTION
Aura none; CL Least 5th, Lesser or Curse-render 10th, Greater 20th
Slot objects only; Price 21,000 gp (least), 42,000 gp (lesser), 56,000 gp (curse-render), 70,000 gp (greater); Weight
DESCRIPTION
This woven ribbon appears inert to normal magical detection. However, when fastened to a magical object, the ribbon will render the object inert (non-magical) so long as it remains. Furthermore, any object a ribbon is fastened to is also granted a measure of protection from magical effects. Any magic that would affect the protected object is treated as if targeted by a dispel magic spell of a caster level equal to the CL of the ribbon. Variants of these ribbons, called curse-renders, include an additional enchantment that allows the ribbon to disrupt cursed items and are highly prized by good clerics. Greater ribbons can also disrupt curses as the spell greater dispel magic. Ribbons of Disjunction have many uses, including using them as magical peace-knots, theft protection, to disguise or conceal items of magical nature, or to suppress harmful magical items.
CREATION
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, dispel magic, break enchantment or greater dispel magic; Cost 10,500 gp (least), 21,000 gp (lesser), 28,000 gp (curse-render), 35,000 gp (greater)

My mistake in bold: I accidentally submitted the wrong version (this was an early draft). Unfortunately, once you hit submit, you can't take it back and I think it cost me, as it is "broken" as written above. The spoiler below is the corrected text I had intended to submit.....be glad you didn't hear my foul utterings after this error - I think it was laced with "dark speech!"

Spoiler:
Any magic that directly targets an unattended ribbon-protected object is treated as if targeted by a greater dispel magic spell of a caster level equal to the ribbon's CL.

Don't get me wrong, it's a neat item, but I think it's "spell-in-a-box."

I see what you were intending to do, and I agree with you: it doesn't exist in the game and it should. The problem is, though, the effects of your rouges (or whatever, it's late and my vocabulary is dwindling rapidly) are spell-effects. If you had somehow said, say, "target X kissed by user Y is inflicted with contact poison that's primary damage is drunkenness and secondary damage is sleep", it might have been better. I would personally love your item (rather than just like it) if it had unique effects, rather than "like X spell" effects.

Shadow Lodge

I'm definitely seeing where my Spellslayer's Gauntlet went wrong. I relied too heavily on spell effects, and fell into the "spell-in-a-can" trap.

Star Voter Season 8

If we can still get rejection explainations I would like one (I think I know of several parts that probably canned mine, I just want to be sure).

Mask Of Arcane Secrets
Major Effect: Nondetection *as spell continuous
Minor Effect: +5 to DC of spellcraft checks to identify spells cast by the wearer
Space Used: Same as lens or goggles
Caster Level: 5th
Cost: 37500 gp *2500 for minor effect + 30000 for 3rd level spell caster level 5th continuously active +
5000 for costly spell component*
Spells Needed: Nondetection
Feats Needed: Craft Wondrous Items

This Black velvet mask is a boon to any spellcaster wishing to keep their auras and spells to themselves. It was developed by a wizard after being ogled by another mage looking at his items. It also has the added effect of disguising spells as they are being cast making them harder to counter.

Thank you.

I really like your item. Spell in a can? Maybe, but it's a good one and some of the better ones advanced their authors forward. It's a shame yours didn't.

Torment of Wisdom

Sorry to miss yours.

I have to say, I think collectively we didnt get your item. It was one of several "soul capture" items. It was probably one of the creepiest, which is good :) The mechanics were a bit wonky, particulary the "two souls can speak to each other if multiple needles are inserted" part. Also, what happens to the user if he or she is slain by the damage taken from inserting the needle (or the damage thereafter)?

I guess in the end we saw this more as a plot device than a wondrous item. Plus, while it was cool, its use was a bit unclear.

Confusing but creepy and cool, that's something to work with...a bit larger word limit might have been needed to explain the item better.

Basically I went for an item with a shamanistic vibe, a bit from Siberian shamans (where I got the "item with ancestral soul, who can be consulted") and a bit from Native Americans (sundance ritual etc). And loosely based on one odd item in one old campaign...

But yeah, I guess it is more a plot device or an appendix for culture feature than what you were looking for. Oh well, maybe I'll go look for submission guidelines of KQ or something :)

Dark Archive

Ah, this thread is what I had been waiting for. I had no real hopes of actually making the Top 32, I mostly entered as an exercise in curiosity and for the chance to see what such an esteemed designer thought of my idea. So, without further ado, my entry:

Shard of the Verdant Heart

Aura strong divination; CL 13th; Slot neck; Price 32,000 gp; Weight ---

DESCRIPTION
Few people remember that fey, like dreams, are not always pleasant. This brilliant green gem was crafted to aid against the darkest of dreams.

The shard is attuned to its user the first time she sleeps with it on her person. At this point the gem fuses itself to her chest and can only be removed by the bearer’s own hand or upon her death. While embedded it grants the following abilities:

•+4 Insight bonus to saves versus Enchantment and Illusion effects
•Untroubled sleep, including immunity to spells such as Nightmare
Faerie fire (at will)

Additionally, if the bearer is a Druid, she may expend uses of her Wild Shape ability to cast one of the following spells as a standard action (self only, no spell more than twice per day):

Freedom of movement (1 use)
Commune with nature (2 uses)
Tree stride (2 uses)
True seeing (3 uses)

CONSTRUCTION
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, freedom of movement, commune with nature, faerie fire, resistance, tree stride, true seeing, creator must be a druid; Cost 16,000 gp

Hah! Well played!

*takes a bow* I was hoping someone would appreciate that bit of humor.

I couldn't resist once the concept for my item popped into my head. "Hmmm...I can't call it lipstick. Rouge is a better fantasy name. Oh! And who would use this?? Yes!!" Plus, I hoped it would serve the Grand Cause of teaching people how to properly spell the two words. :-)

mmm since i am not native speaker i din't noticed it

but after reading it I just love it

as you mention is abasic for a campaign of intrigues and cloak & dagger :D

i like it

Why not just list those who did not make it the same way as the top 32?

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32 , Star Voter Season 7

Because then we would have hundreds upon hundreds of items listed, sometimes for people who don't want to see what the judges said, using words the judges may have used in confidence. Even the Top 32 may have had some comments edited before they were made public.

This way Clark can say his piece, and edit the actual comments where necessary, and people who know they don't take criticism well, or already figured out why they didn't pass, don't have to hear anything.
