Alpha Release 1 General Discussion

Paizo Employee Chief Creative Officer, Publisher

In one week, more than 10,000 individual gamers have downloaded Alpha release 1 of the Pathfinder RPG. Judging by the responses to these messageboards, a significant number of you are also participating in the open playtest!

I just wanted to take this opportunity to extend my personal thanks for checking out our new game. For those of you new to the Paizo community, I offer a hearty welcome! For those familiar faces out there, thanks for giving the new game a shot!

Today we also released a newly updated version of the Pathfinder RPG Alpha rules, release 1.1. You can get a summary of the changes in the first of a series of Development Notes direct from Lead Designer Jason Bulmahn from the link off the main Paizo frontpage.

I hope you take a chance to check out Jason's development notes. We are paying very close attention to the Alpha Open Playtest message boards, and playtester feedback has already resulted in significant changes to the Alpha rules!

Thanks again for your interest in the Pathfinder RPG, and thanks for helping us make the game the best it can possibly be.

Sincerely,

Erik Mona

Cool!
Cant wait to see what our opinions have shaped or changed so quickly. :)

Yay new toys :D

That is great news! Thank you for the dedication to this project.

My great downloading efforts comprised only one ten thousandth of this gift to you but you're welcome nonetheless, Erik. ;)

First thoughts of 1.1 you removed the universal school bonus power. Fair enough. however the Magic domain still posesses this ability and lets face it if it was bad on a mage it is far worse on a cleric :)

Dark Archive

I hereby claim the title of Playtester #8,374!!

Thanks for making this a community-involved effort. This feels more like D&D 3.x felt when it first came out, the enthusiasm, the giddiness, and the sense of community that was on the boards at the time. That's almost as important as the game.

Thanks Paizo - you guys are 100% class.

Liberty's Edge

10,000 maniacs. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!

Liberty's Edge

Nice work!

I would like to thank you guys for allowing us to help with this.Thank you

Scarab Sages

Holy Crap, Dude! That's awesome! Way to go Paizo!

Impressive...

The first update and it's only been a week! That's amazing!

I just want to take a moment to commend everyone at Paizo for all the hard work putting this together, responding to people on the message boards, and still finding time to do your other releases (you know, the ones that actually make you money :).

You guys rock!

Yes they do, but let's never take them for granite.

I just got my print-friendly version. I feel all giddy.

Look at my avatar. That's me looking giddy.

I wouldn't want to do that, so I suppose I should stone down the praise a bit.

While I'm going to be buying up 4th ed, I am glad to be one of the folks excited about Paizo's efforts towards an improved 3.x

Thanks for the Alpha playtest.

10,000 gamers... just wow. Here's hoping more then half those buy the Beta and final versions. :)

So, with 10000 gamers downloading it, is this the biggest playtest ever? Or does 3e count as a playtest for 3.5?

Sweet! I have barely had time to peruse the first release.

Only if you're not feeling boulder.

Last time I felt a boulder a jealous earth elemental showed up right quick and tanned my hide. After my tree hugging phase (and subsequent beatdown at the barken hands of a treant) I thought I was safe with stones but now I fear I'll have to turn my perverse affections to dumpsters because I can't think of a dumpster-based monster. Sexy dumpsters of course... I'm no *sicko.

*Although inventing barken is probably a sure sign of bad things to come.

Paizo,
Offering a chance for the fans to be involved in an open playtest is great in so many ways. I am both pleased and astounded that you have taken the opportunity to do this. This goes even farther than RPG Superstar in showing how interested Paizo is in keeping pace with the industry fan base.

WotC created so much potential when they released the rules under the OGL. Unfortunately, when they decided to keep 4.0 inhouse, they blew all of that potential.

I think it is great that Paizo has done this. However, I find it sad that WotC has created a situation where Paizo was the one that had to do this.

Thanks for the read.
Eric

Let's not be igneous of the facts. Paizo is the basalt of the earth.

Okay... my punner is clearly low on battery power.

Ouch. Those were shockingly bad. You should be charged with something.

Liberty's Edge

Paizo is proving over and over that it is OUR game. Thank you.

Question - are you a public traded company?

Wow! This is so cool. I really haven't been this hyped about something since a crumbsuckers show back in 88!!!

EDIT: And make me stay up too late on a work night!!

Scarab Sages

Well, I had all 8,000 people at work download a copy for me just in case I have a network issue and couldn't get it myself.

:)

Go Paizo!

Jon Brazer Enterprises

10,000 gamers. a good beginning.

Liberty's Edge

Somehow, I don't think this is going to be all that "niche" of a game. It may not hit the kind of sales numbers 4E does, but judging by this, Paizo should be around for a good long time. That warms my heart.

Incidentally, when does the next alpha document hit? I want to see what you guys did with some more of the classes. (Ranger, Paladin, Druid, and Bard in particular)

I wonder what other stuff is on the slate for Paizo? The way they are transforming gaming is metamorphic and I hope they continue to thrive sand grow in the gaming industry.

I believe that the mentioned timeline was one month from the first release but I'm not positive where I heard that. It might have been the Tuesday night chatroom with Paizo on Lilith's website, DMtools.org.

Thank you for choosing to involve the community with your new system, and for valuing your customers so much. Between the openness and innovation involved in this playtest and the great customer service I've seen from you all at Paizo over the last month, you've earned one very satisfied customer here!

It's over 9000!

Well. I've got nothing useful to add.

Dark Archive

Go Paizo!

Let's turn that to 11'000 downloads! 'Cause you know, 11'000 is bigger than 10'000 (bad Spinal Tap joke here)...
