opinion on a witch as summoner

Advice

when the opponents are non immune to mind effecting i am great.
however sometines, there are concept missions to places with golems, oozes and undeads.

as a player i REALLY like the round view, allowing me to be good at all situations.

i took some buff spells via time patron, but i really enjoy summon monsters, as a level 6 witch - and getting better at it.

i found fortune to be ubber, and thinking for augument summoning feat...
yes, its a 2 feat tax, but also opens up supirior summons.

as a witch - i find that i have feats free... i can grab item creation feats, since we are in a low magic world, but can also move them to summons ...

thoughts?

Ummm... go ahead, do it?

You could blast with Fireball etc but without a lot of focus Evocation is going to ok at best.

Summoning monsters is a great way to get yourself out of those Oozy 9mm situations.

Witches are just as good as non-specialized wizards, if you're looking to go that route. They are a highly flexible class in the ways you can play it, which makes up for their relative lack of big power.

The current witch I'm playing has more of a healer focus, but I like the fact that she can bust out some damage or battlefield control if she needs to.

Summon monster is a very versatile spell and Witches tend to be better at buffing then blasting. My Witch from level one in Battle would summon a monster cast an enlarge on it and sit back and use a crossbow or daze.

I took rime spell metamagic and open up most combats with either a rimed frost fall or a rimed ice storm (I have magic knack ice storm, so it remains a 4th level spell). Entangle is quite a nice debuff and it works even if the targets saves because the save doesn't negate the damage.

That said summons would work well, too I guess. I didn't go that route because we have a summoner in our party.

Lineage. Not knack.

I'd go with summons as well - summons rock.

i know summoning is ubber...
the real Q - is it a "MUST" to get aug- summoning spell? (and/or superior...) ?

or, as a witch that can always haste / fortune the summoned creature, its not really worth the taxing feats ?

the alternative for the feats are:
1. extra hexes (truly, one CANT have enough of those...)
2. item cration feat (no buying / poor finding world) (BTW we are REALLY poor, at level 6 we got like 3K gold and 2 items only) .
3. improve initiative.

the trade of for the feats is always nice :)

my build is :
str : 8, dex:14, con:14, int:19, wis : 10, cha: 12
feats:
1: extra hex + accursed hex
3: extra hex
5: craft wands (for CLW etc )
hexs: evil eye (1), fortune (1), misfortune (2), slumber (3), cackle (4), fligt (6)
familiar is a thrush (liked the diplomacy buff, flying and speaking)
trait is reactinary.

one thing, at level 8 we got a "house rule" that allow to retrain 1 chosen ability (like a feat etc) so i need to plan ahead before we level.

No. It's good, but regular summoning works just fine.

Sometimes it's better to summon multiple weaker monsters. The idea isn't to do lots of damage, but to inhibit the enemies' movement. Block a charge, or give someone a flank, or just buy time for the party to buff and position, since the minotaurs have to kill or go around the rats in front of them before they can come at you.

thanks for the advice.
i'll need to sleep on it, since we are about to level in 2 meetings i think .
its aug-summoning root VS more hexes (healing / hair) VS rime spell.

so many options :)

I was thinking of making a witch with augment summoning for Pathfinder Society. In PFS, wizards get spell focus as a bonus feat, so I was thinking of dipping into teleportation wizard to get a bunch of extra low level spells (feather fall, grease, etc.), the ability to teleport 5 feet as a swift action, the bonus to will saves, the spell list, and getting spell focus (Conjuration). Then I'm one feat away from Augment Summoning. Of course if it's not for Society, this wouldn't really work.

Either go all wizard or all witch. You're not helping yourself by mix and match.

You don't need to have Augment Summons to be effective as a summoner. It's a nice extra, but it's hardly a requisite. If you're good as a summoner, your summons will be effective JUST BY BEING THERE.

What you absolutely MUST do is NOT drag the game down. Either have index cards ready with your preferred summons, or use an app like Summoner available for Android or IOS devices. There are few things more irritating than someone taking 10 minutes to look up bestiary entries while trying to choose something to summon. If you do that on my table, I will pass on your turn until you get your act together.

I agree there. I have stats on the most common monster I summon ready to go so there is no delay in game.
