Shadow of a Doubt

Trapped on the Shadow Plane, the heroes find their only hope of returning home is to find and defeat Dr. Lestana Gragant, the twisted scientist who is attempting to broadcast a maddening signal throughout the galaxy. If the PCs can make their way past shadowy foes and terrifying obstacles, they might be able to wash the stain of corruption from their souls!

This volume of Starfinder Adventure Path concludes the Signal of Screams Adventure Path and includes:

  • "Heart of Night," a Starfinder adventure for 11th-level characters, by Saif Ansari.
  • Advice on how you can continue your campaign past the final encounter and details on the horrors to come should the heroes fail, by Tracy Barnett.
  • An exploration of the creepy Shadow Plane, as well as numerous player options for those connected to that plane, by Thurston Hillman.
  • An archive of alien frights, including a memory-stealing fey and a faceless beast, by Saif Ansari, Stephen Glicker, and James L. Sutter.
  • Statistics and deck plans for a velstrac starship, by Saif Ansari, plus a glimpse of a world of waking dreams, by Owen K.C. Stephens.

Didn't quite hit the mark.

3/5

Gonna be honest, I think I stopped this one just before the finale because it was just sorta like "you know what? who cares. You go through a linear set of encounters, kill everything, then kill the last boss. The end".

We got through parts 1 and 2. Part 1 was the strongest. Hanging out on Shadow Verces, going up a shadow space elevator, etc.

But then things sorta just went downhill from there. The last area is just...not thematically appropriate. Like it's gory and grisly but I feel like there's no techno-horror in it. It's just like a bad Hellraiser sequel.

And while that's the point of the Shadow Realm, there has to be some sort of Starfinder edge to it, otherwise you're just playing a reskinned Pathfinder module.

In general the entire module was pretty underbalanced. By this point you have several PC's in power armor and they just chew up enemies and spit them out. The knife-fight-in-phone-booth encounter maps don't help either because there's no room to maneuver -- just you kick them, they kick you.

The ending is pretty underwhelming too. Cover-up isn't even the appropriate word, just...nobody reacts to it. A huge tragedy, a massacre of people, etc. and you either get asked by a corp to shut up about it or the Stewards suggest you go get therapy.

This AP goes from Event Horizon to Resident Evil to Hellraiser 2.

You know, I'm usually not big on published adventures, but I gotta say that Paizo has my attention with this one.

Sounds like Zon-Kuthon is involved.

While they are in the shadow plan plus we know kytons are involved tho apprently starfinder kytons have a new name

Dark Archive

Hm, i like the two previous covers, but this one doesn't excite me.
The presumed Dr. looks like a zombie and those chained dogs are not as cool as Akatas.

Kyton, an exonym exclusively used by mortals, spread when the kyton demagogue Kaikyton wandered the Material Plane, and her onomatopoeic name became associated with her followers by early mortals. The velstracs decided that the name kyton was flattering and most do not bother to correct mortals when this word is used."

Just got to look at the PDF. It looks like the spell Slithering Chain (Technomancer 1) is missing a range increment. Any errata on what the range should be?

What are the new monsters' type, subtype, size and CR? Are there any new playable races?

People with the PDF, can you just confirm something for me. Just downloaded my copy, and wondering if there is issued with a corrupted download or if it's the PDF itself.

Trying to say this without spoilers, so:

On the ship details of the front cover.

Under expansion bays, is it missing the "P" from Pact World under the reference document. Missing the "er" from the Science Officer of the Crew compliment?

On the Contents page, in the content warning, last line, is it missing the "A" of Adventure Path?

For me, there are missing letters throughout the document, and it's not taken me long discover them. I hope it's just a corrupt download on my side, that I'll try to work out in the morning.

And hopefully not a sign that it might of been printed this way, it would be a lot of effort as I struggle with my reading as it is.

I just checked, and my PDF also is missing those same letters.

Yep. It gets a half page descriptive write up and then the usual city stat block of population breakdown and such.

What are the population and demographics then?

1.2 million people, 55% kayals (fetchlings), 22% d'ziriaks, etc.

Who is governing the city now? Is it still run by a dragon?

A council called the Cultured Assembly that is the powerful elites of the station. Although it does mention that a shadow dragon is on the council.

Whats new with the Kayal?

In addition to the random missing characters in the pdf, found a couple of (potential) errors in the new PC options.

1. Slithering Chain spell says it hinders a target within range, but no range is given.

2. The 9th shadow mystic connection power Shadow Puppet states "While you are invisible from shadow weaver or shrouded in shadow from shadow blend..."

Shadow blend is the 12th level ability and applies whenever you are hidden or invisible in dim light. The first part is trivial, the second part is redundant with the shadow weaver trigger. Did you man to say "or shrouded in shadow from shadow shroud..." which would require activation and RP expenditure, more in line with the other trigger.

1. The range for slithering chain should be close.

2. That sounds like an excellent alteration to the text. Consider it what we meant to say!

Every copy my FLGS got was misprinted. Around pg 33 it jumped to pg 49's content and then reprinted from there. Any other print buyers find this to be true? I'd love to reorder, but not if they're all like this.

They are not.

Mine is perfectly normal. ;-)

So, the Kayal portraits all depict augmented Kayal, right? I assume the glowy bits on Father Gloom aren't a new look for Kayal?

There is no mention of the kayal being augmented, other than the fact that this is a high level adventure in which the PCs and others of their level can probably be assumed to have augmentations of their own. Certainly the glowing yellow eyes are common kayal features.

The thing in part B3 of the final area reminds me of Silent Hill 4: The Room. I wonder if that's where the inspiration came from.

For people who don't care about Heart of Night or SH4 spoilers:
In Silent Hill 4: The Room you come across a giant disembodied head of one of the female characters in a room late in the game. It's apparently alive and it's eyes follow the main character. And in this AP there's a room towards the end where there's a giant head of Dr. Lestana Gragant. I can see the writers getting inspiration from SH4 because of the psychological and paranormal themes from the game which fit this AP pretty well. Here's a spoiler-y video which discusses the game in-depth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzP6AVjti7A

I don't think they mean "onomatopoeic". I think they mean eponymous....
