The kings and queens of Korvosa have long ruled under the shadow of the Curse of the Crimson Throne—an infamous superstition claiming that no monarch of the city of Korvosa shall ever die of old age or produce an heir. Whether or not there is any truth to the legend of the curse, Korvosa's current king is but the latest victim to succumb to this foul legacy. Now, the metropolis teeters on the edge of anarchy, and it falls to a band of new heroes to save Korvosa from the greatest threat it has ever known! This hardcover compilation updates the fan-favorite campaign for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, including new and revised content and nearly 500 pages packed with mayhem, excitement, and adventure!
This hardcover edition of Curse of the Crimson Throne contains:

This AP is widely considered one of the (if not THE) best Adventure Paths for good reason. It really is that good. Tons of really interesting NPCs and storylines. Lots and lots and lots of room for a GM to add their own touches. An excellent story that makes the PCs feel like heroes. Villains they really want to beat. Heck, it's even a good introduction to the pathfinder system and world.
Not only that, but since it's so popular, there's tons of advice about what changes to make, what to keep an eye on, and how to make changes that can improve it. This edition is a fantastic deal and an excellent campaign and I can't recommend it highly enough.
I wrote fricking long review about great time I had with running the whole campaign(and post campaign) and then it got deleted by the fricking "too much backtracking" page dagnabbit
I'm not gonna write the entire thing again, so here is in short: This campaign has great recurring NPC cast(most of later APs have problem with introducing cool NPCs and then rest of books never mentioning them again), great themes, great villains, Kazavon's awesome hair, allows multiple approaches to different situations(such as infiltrating with sneaking or talking through places instead of just fighting through them. Kinda reminds me of Deux Ex computer games in a way), awesome locations, awesome post campaign potential and is one of my favourite APs ever.
Short Version: A smart buy but held back by structural issues.
It's hard to get better adventure value for your dollar than this or the Rise of the Runelords collected edition. If I were reviewing on that alone, this would be 5 stars and then some. But there's more to an adventure than that.
The AP's hook is quite good, but almost immediately discarded in favor of saving the city. This can be helped a good session 0, but still feels artificial.
Even looking at the new plot, many elements feel shoehorned in. People point to volumes 4 and 5 for this, but there are sections in 2 that exist only to kill time as the plot advances and an entire dungeon in 3 that is cool but can seem forced if the players don't kick in the door right away. Any of these alone would be fine, but each makes the next more obvious.
That being said, there's a lot of cool stuff going on here, it just takes at least a star's worth of work to stitch it together.
I´m gonna list the differences between the original AP#7s chapters and it´s adaption into the hardcover edition:
Inside front cover:
The "Korvosan Hierarchy" overview is not reprinted.
Part 1:
The illustration on page 6 is exchanged for a cartoony new one on page 12 of the HC.
Page 10 of AP#7 has a map where the 8 locations in Korvosa that are important for book 1 are marked and named. This map is reprinted on page 400 of the HC but that one shows ALL important locations of the campaign at once, marked with letters and numbers.
"Lamm´s Lambs" stats are upgraded to young human on page 18 of the HC.
"Yargin Balko" now has a full body illustration instead of an upper body one. "Hookshanks Gruller" gets a full body illustration. "Giggles" gets a fbi. "Gaedren Lamm" gets a fbi.
Part 2:
King Eodred Arabasti gets a head illu. "Imps and Dragons" gets an illustration. "Meet the mob" gets a "Amin Jalento" head illu and his battle stats.
Part 3:
The illustration of "Sabina Merrin" on page 25 is not reprinted (she gets a new one on page 455).
Part 4:
"Cressida Croft" gets a head illu (and fbi on page 443). The Queens gets a new veiled head illu (the old one is more mysterious). The "renegade guards" stats in "All the Worlds Meat" get new stats. "Verik Vancasterkin" is upgraded from fighter 3 to fighter 4.
Part 5:
The "Ambassadors Secret" gets a new head illu. The fbi of "Vencarlo Orisini" from page 34 is not reprinted. The fbi of "Devargo Barvasi" on page 37 is replaced with a new one that is very much less impressive. He is upgraded from rogue 4 to rogue 5. "Majenko" is changed from pseudodragon to house drake. The illustration on page 41 is replaced with a new one (page 57). Both are equally creepy.
Part 6:
The "Trinia Sabor" fbi from page 43 is not reprinted (she gets a new look on page 460, but the old one is flashier). She is upgraded from bard 4 to bard 5. "The Shingle Chase" gets a better illustration. Curiously it features the old flashier Trinia Sabor outfit instead of the new.
Part 7:
The Owlbear skeleton gets gorgeous art on page 59 of the HC. The cool illustration on page 52 is replaced by a cool new one on HC page 61.
Cabbagehead´s head illu is replaced by a fbi. The "Gaekhen" head illu is not reprinted. "Vreeg" gets a much better new fbi.
Concluding the adventure:
The famous "green dress Illeosa Arabasti" illustration from page 56 (on which the first miniature is based) is NOT reprinted!
The Blackjack illustration from page 57 is replaced by a much better one on HC page 67.
Appendixes:
The 4 page Harrow article is updated to a 14 page one!
The 8 page "people of the road" article about varisians is not reprinted.
The 6 page Pathfinder´s journal is not reprinted.
Bestiary:
The illustration of the "Dream Spider", the only creature that hasn´t been adapted to a Bestiary yet, is not reprinted from page 82 but it´s stats are.
Inside back cover:
The "Korvosas enemies" overview is not reprinted.
While the new edition HC is better overall and everything needed for playing the campaign is included, updated and streamlined, quite a few cool things are left out.
I´m glad i got the original AP #7 too.
It was perhaps inevitable that Curse of the Crimson Throne would one day also receive a similar treatment to Rise of the Runelords. There’s no special anniversary to celebrate this year, but does there really need to be? Much like its Runelords predecessor, the new hardcover compilation of Crimson Throne updates the adventure path to Pathfinder rules and also expands on the story where beneficial and streamlines in other areas. It also takes advantage of the most recent rules supplements, making use of newer monsters, classes, and feats where appropriate.
At nearly 500 pages in length, it is actually a substantially larger tome than the hardcover Runelords (a good 50 pages or so longer), and its extra length is certainly put to good use. Indeed, it manages to make one of the best adventure paths even better.
"New" campaign traits - really just modernization of the originals, plus the new Betrayed trait (with Revenge and Reformed modes). In addition, the traits are now connected to xp gain in the first segment. The Varisia, Birthplace of Legends ones don't make an appearance, and the Varisian Immunity trait (which I never liked to start with) doesn't have a good connection.
Gaedren Lamm is now directly connected to Rolth - depending on his body's fate, the PCs might face him again...
They no longer call the queen a wh*** in Book 1. Personally, I appreciate that. Also, they provide a minor link to her origins in Westcrown in the background info.
The book has multiple "city statblocks", representing Korvosa in various states of anarchy and despair.
Thousand Bones is now a shaman! He, plus a few others, now occupy a large NPC Codex in the back.
The book recommends the lycanthrope corruption as an option in case of wererat-infected PCs - it's always nice to see them support stuff like that.
Jolistina no longer throws those aggravating plague-bombs. Glad to see those gone - they caused one of the many arguments during our playthrough of the original.
The immune Varisians are no longer descendants of Vorel's wife - that was a little hard to believe, given how recently she lived and how many were affected. Also, blood veil's nature has been expanded upon. It's very interesting.
I look forward to quoting the clarification text of Krojun's Thunder and Fang feat in messageboard arguments.
As noted elsewhere, a new section has been added to A History of Ashes, letting the PCs return to Korvosa to strike against the Red Mantis and Gray Maidens. Marcus Endrin, would-be regicide, can now be rescued from Gray Maiden captivity. In addition, some of the charaters from the Gray Maiden article in Shattered Star make appearances in the updated Path. (The Gray Maidens have a very... interesting torturer.)
Scarwall has been thoroughly fleshed out - as noted elsewhere, every room now has something to see. (To my surprise, Scarwall's devils weren't replaced with kytons.) The spirit trapping effect now has info on how it affects spirit-based characters, like shamans and spiritualists. Also, there are a lot more NPCs there.
Neither the guided weapon property nor the celestial plate armor return. They, not unlike the denizens of Scarwall, remain trapped in 3.5 for all time.
There's a "new" Harrow deck of many things - it's mostly identical to the Artifacts and Legends one, but some of the effects are updated, tweaked, or Korvosa-specific.
One big thing I noticed:
Paradigm shift:
There's a lot more redemption opportunities called out in the text, including some major ones. Some notables include:
Jolistina, the elf "jester"
Cinnabar, the Red Mantis assassin leader(!)
Laori, obviously - her path to redemption has been expanded.
The art is gorgeous. Roughly four out of five pieces have been updated.
Crimson Throne art:
I love the new art of Ileosa's possession by Kazavon.
Yargin's art is a good example of how the new art maintains the old personality.
I'll miss Sabina's art in Book 1.
Devargo Barvasi looks far more wild and intimidating now.
Jolistina Susperio has new art now, and I couldn't be happier. Weirdly, her eyes aren't all-black - they're human-looking. Given that the iconic alchemist has the same condition in many pieces of art, I wonder if chemical exposure shrinks their pupils to human-size...
The art of the Gray Maidens defending the hospice is excellent.
Dr. Davaulus gets full art! He's so gentlemanly!
Rolth has new, incredibly punchable art. The cultists of Urgathoa get new art, too - they're surprisingly snappy dressers.
The new art of Marcus Endrin's failed assassination is solid.
Meliya Arkona finally gets art! (The Arkonas are now ethnically Vudrani.) Glorio's new art is fabulous as well - if it gets added to the avatars, I foresee it in captain yesterday's future...
All of the Shoanti art is amazing. ALL of it. (And there's a lot.)
The Brotherhood of Bones are all less sexy than before. It happens.
Art of Kazavon's human form! He looks fabulously villainous, in a Captain Hook sort of way. Again, future captain yesterday avatar.
Sabina Merrin's new art looks an awful lot like Anne Hathaway. Is it just me?
Fabulous new art of Ileosa returned from death in the Continuing the Campaign section.
It bears mentioning that I identified many more changes - that, up there, was the brief list.
I left a lot out, either because they weren't that interesting, or because I wanted to save some discoveries for readers. I shouldn't spill all the secrets in one go. ^_^
Would it be at all possible for you to post a list of the contributing artists?
Well, I can't imagine they'll have a huge problem with that. ^_^
Interior Artists:
Interior Artists • Hazem Ameen, Eric Belisle, Subroto Bhaumik, Kremena Chipilova, Concept Art House, Taylor Fischer, Kent Hamilton, Miguel Regodón Harkness, Andrew Hou, Kyle Hunter, Imaginary Friends Studio, Irina Kuzmina, Setiawan Lie, David Melvin, Caio Maciel Monteiro, Will O’Brien, Nikolai Ostertag, Roberto Pitturru, Riccardo Rullo, Dimitri Sirenko, Bryan Sola, Firat Solhan, Richard Suwono, Eva Widermann, Ben Wootten, Kevin Yan, and Sam Yang
That list includes some of the artists from the original run, obviously; for example, Kyle Hunter (of Downer fame) is the artist for the Harrow deck.
In addition, for those of you with an incurable minis addiction, Mr. Massoudi brought this to my attention in another thread. I'm certainly excited. ^_^
Did they update Chained Spirit and Danse Macabre? What about our favorite Umbral Dragon?
Yes, the Chained Spirit is cleaned up and a lot more effective now. In the original, my group slaughtered him easily even when he had all 4 chains. He'd be a lot more challenging now. Then again, they're supposed to be higher level in this edition, so maybe it would still be a cake walk.
The Danse Macabre has been updated. It's tougher in some ways, but weaker in others. Higher AC, better to hit, better saves, more HP, but lower SR and some of its special abilities aren't as nasty or have limitations.
Sadly, the Umbral Dragon has only an entry of # of hit points and a reference to the Bestiary 2, page 102. He's still the same age category, too. My players cut through him faster than the Chained Spirit, unfortunately...
But, man, there are SOOOO many more set encounters in Scarwall now. When I ran it, I threw so many wandering encounters with spectres and dread wraiths at my players 'cuz they were very prepared.
Will there be the chance to buy the Pleather edition that is signed by the staff? I am looking to get that and would love to have the crew who did the update along with the originals sign the copy

Nope. We do not typically sell signed copies of our products via the webstore.
Aww man, so they did update the old traits and add new one, so using 3.5 player's guide wouldn't be apporiate?
Eh, I guess copying them to notes for players isn't that big of problem, I just prefer being able to link player's guides instead of writing traits myself :D I like fancy presentations. Still nice if they did update them somewhat.

First, credit where credit is due. Excellent freaking job on this guys! Artwork and overall repacking was a delight. Thanks people.
Now, not to derail this thread, but, originally for "Continuing the Campaign" we had mention of "Sorshen Rises". My hardback has changed this to "Sorshen's Legacy". I have no idea of how to do the spoiler thing but it's a minor one at best, still you may want to stop reading now.
MINOR SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!
Spoiler:
"In fact, she may feature in a prominent role in an upcoming Pathfinder product".
Anyone heard anything about this? Seems kind of odd they'd put that in print for all time if they weren't going to follow up on it. Hopefully, soon. Or do we already have a thread on this topic and I simply missed it with my weak Forum-Fu?
And now I DO know how to do the spoiler thAng. Until I forget. Thanks guys.
I believe that Sorshen and Xanderghul's plots are on Mr. Jacobs' "this will definitely happen someday" list. ^_^
They actually suggest you may want to postpone running a follow up campaign because of an "upcoming Pathfinder product". Sounded like this was a bit more than a "planned for someday maybe" thing, but rather something that was in the works. More of a six months to a year thing.
Just my opinion there of course, with perhaps too much hope sprinkled in. That said, having a book like this come out before a new AP featuring someone like Ileosa and her new Mistress would be good marketing....

Dagnabbit! Monday is a holiday. Which means my hardcover probably won't arrive 'til Tuesday. Oh.. the humanity!
Thanks, James & crew for touching this AP up for us. Now just go ahead and start on Second Darkness. It's okay for you to finish that one before starting Legacy of Fire.
Then the fabulous 4 pre-PFRPG APs will be complete!
