Chapter 5: "Rasputin Must Die!"
by Brandon Hodge

Worlds at War
The search for the Queen of Witches finally ends when the Dancing Hut travels to Baba Yaga’s homeland of Russia on the planet Earth. The year is 1918, and the First World War rages throughout Europe. The heroes find themselves in the wilds of Siberia, where they must face Russian soldiers armed with twentieth-century technology to infiltrate an ancient monastery and rescue Baba Yaga from her estranged son, Grigori Rasputin. Can the heroes kill the “Mad Monk”—who has already cheated death once before—and free Baba Yaga, or will they fall before the horrors of modern war?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path continues the Reign of Winter Adventure Path and includes:

  • “Rasputin Must Die!”, a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 13th-level characters, by Brandon Hodge.
  • A look into the cultural climate of Russia in the midst of revolution, along with rules for her weapons of war, by Adam Daigle and Brandon Hodge.
  • Revelations on Szuriel, the Horseman of War, and her brutal quest for souls, by Sean K Reynolds.
  • Spiders versus sentient dolls in the Pathfinder’s Journal, by Kevin Andrew Murphy.
  • Four new monsters, by Adam Daigle, Brandon Hodge, and Sean K Reynolds.

Each monthly full-color softcover Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the world’s oldest fantasy RPG.

Player review.

I had been looking forward to this one simply on account of the title. I have to say that the story elements and the setting were top notch. Where we all found it lost points was just how overpowered we found most of the fights. Even for experienced players we found them too difficult for the levels.

Absolutely amazing!

5/5

Everything about this book - from Brandon Hodge's introduction to the back-matter to the inside-cover items - was a joy and a pleasure to read!

This is, by far, my favorite book/module/scenario/AP to have read and GM'd - slightly edging out "The Flesh Collector" PFS scenario, even!

My players were having so much fun with this book that I purposefully dragged out RP and certain sections of it so the book took us longer than any of the others, and they loved every minute of it.

Bravo!

Two words : Must-Buy

5/5

It is simply amazing.
There are several 'look so mad' things, but,
actually all of them are perfectly harmonized without way over the line.
Rasputin must Die! is definetly top of the adventure path line.
Highly recommend!

,One of the best adventures I have ever read

5/5

Brandon Hodge was definitely the best choice for this adventure. He expertly handled historical content and mixed the fantasy with real world elements in a way that enhanced the story. I love this adventure and he it gives me hope for seeing more boundary pushing content from Brandon and from Paizo as a whole.

Amazing adventure

5/5

I admit when this was first announced I was at best sceptical of the entire idea however having read and Dm'd it I can say I have never been happier to be completly wrong about a product before. Ths is an incredible adventure path instalment and I cant recomend it enough.

I've got to say I love how Paizo's writers aren't afraid to go out on a limb. Sandbox campaigns, world hopping campaigns including ending up on Earth... that's really kicking in the fourth wall. Whether or not that is your cup of tea you have to admit that at least they aren't churning out the same adventure path over and over only changing the props.

Kudos, Paizo.

I'm most interested in the new oracle mystery along with the possibility of new weapons of advanced nature with a larger capacity then the weapons we have stated now.

The backmatter for snows of summer basically confirmed this will have new monsters in the adventure itself, for those wondering.

Every AP has new monsters, and frequently those are used in the adventure.

EDIT: I'm certain I misread your post in some way, Cheapy.

Pardon the sort of "me too!" post, but Chapter Two has new monsters used in the adventure as well. :)

I think's nice when it can work out that way.

There were concerns a few pages ago that there would be 0 monsters and just tanks, guys with guns, and tear gas. These concerns also included desires for non-technologically related entries in the Bestiary, and you guys were playing coy about it. My post was in the context of attempting to assuage those fears, although I guess actually including that context could've been important for it to be understood by others.

For that matter, every adventure in the AP uses *at least* one of the new monsters in the AP Bestiary. It's certainly something Rob and I have been aiming for.

Request: If you haven't yet finalized your WW1 firearms, may I suggest the pump-action shotgun also known as a trench gun. I have a witch hunter in our group who would love to use one enchanted with the powers of a firedrake pistol from page.155 of UE.

If not then how big would you say is the capacity of a pump-action shotgun in pathfinder game terms?

No different than IRL - 3 to 8 shells.

8-shot capacity it is! with the normal shotgun stats.

So many awesome questions come to mind...like how would taking technology from earth back to Golarion, such as guns and the such, effect our player characters world? :O

I wonder how the Russian soldiers are statted out. Maybe they're all Gunslingers?

This has me very excited.

Once you run out of gas your tank stops moving.

Once you run out of ammo your machine gun stops working.
...
...

Maybe something similar to drow weaponry in D&D happens to these things when they are brought to Golarion.

*shrug*

in terms of guns, you just need to know how to create advanced firearm bullets, even for machine guns (if paizo has them).

In terms of tanks, once the gas runs out its done unless an alchemist can create more gas or an arcane engine is installed like a construct.

I think eating all the hapless victims stumbling into it should suffice to sate its hunger for iron.

Assuming that the alchemist has the knowledge and current technology for gasoline distillation. I just can't see characters sitting down and building a petroleum distillation plant from scratch just by looking at a combustion engine without some serious metagaming. Even with magic.

Turn the tank into a golem or get the local Mage to animat any object the engine... No need for fuel.

What I can see is characters selling the guns and stuff to Alkenstar and letting them work out how to reproduce or adapt the designs.

I'm guessing a specific archetype with a requirement like 'must be from earth' which takes away a load of armour and weapon proficiencies from a warrior and replaces them with gun proficiencies.

I think the rule is when fire arms are common they become simple weapons.

Turin the Mad wrote:

I have one of those, comes with a transformer plug that limits it to 3 shots though, as is proper and legal in a hunting shotgun. Beautiful gun.

The oracle mystery is something that I am looking greatly forward to, I know it deals with spirit placards in some manner, but I hope it can expand into a greater amount of mysticism and not focus heavily on the placards themselves. I've never been much of a fan of archetypes that focus their power towards using a certain item all the time.

It is years after Rasputin's murder. He actually died in December 1916, months before the 1917 uprisng (and it was quite a production as the Mad Monk was insanely difficult to put down), That may be where the "having cheat death once " reference may be from.

The Tsar abdicated in 1917 he and his family were evacuated in a remote town in the Urals. The evacuation turned into an imprisonment when the Bolshevik coup. They were executed in July 1918 when it was feared that Anti-Bolsheviks might try to free him and his family in a Counter-Revolution. Nicholas was shot first, his wife and daughters were initially protected from the bullets by all the diamonds they were wearing, they were then bayoneted and shot each in the head at close range.

It was a very tumultous period, in fact, prior to the execution of the Romanovs, the local Soviet themselves had all been deposed and executed by the White Czechs when they marched into the region.

Kudos, Paizo.

The Adventure Paths aren't really "sandbox" in the way the term is usually applied here on the boards. Even Kingmaker has a plot line running through it. That's not a strike against them though, I find pure sandbox campaigns to be highly overrated.

This AP better has some awesome russian folkloric monsters in the bestiary of this ap (fossegrim/kikimora) to make it somewhat bearable for the non-tank/human lovers. So far this is my favorite AP (part 1 and 2 are) up to date, but mostly because of the fey and fairytales, i'm not sure about this part yet.

Well let's be honest - that beard's a given. :P

Also, according to TV Tropes, Rasputin wasn't insanely hard to kill - his killers just shot him and made the story up to help justify it. Might be mentioned on Wikipedia - I haven't checked.
