Really disapointing end to a disapointing Ap

2/5

Have to say the final part of this adventure path really disapointed me but kind of follows the theme of the massive amounts of randomness the rest of the Ap has shown

Final battle:
So you end up fighting the person who is on the front cover of this book and been presented as the BBEG throughout the Ap (Including the summary stuff in the first book) early on in chapter 3 but then the ap continues on through the high kings tomb where the final boss is revealed to be something that looks like a celestial Armidillo with no previous mention I can think of in the Ap and for all intent and purposes is just kind of there chilling till the PC's arrive where you then engage in combat/ debate on morals. They could have at least made it Torags actual herald. Honestly feels like they ran out of ideas and was just rushed (That and possibly constrained to keeping it to lower lvl's)

Very strong start to the ap

5/5

First up I'll be honest and say that I dont actually play 2nd edition pathfinder however I do plan to convert this back to 1st edition so the game system has no bearing on the review.

As the five stars indicate I was very impressed with this adventure and in my opinion is probably the best one for the new edition so far and definetly a strong start for this Ap

regarding the recent controversy and the fact you play a form of law enforcement my own opinion is the subject matter has been well handled for the most part (There is one minor niggling bit but I suspect that it was more a result of trying to maintain the WBL in the game than any other reason)

If anything I would say the thing most people may have a problem with is the final chapter of the adventure which I dont want to spoil but lets just say that whilst not Hook mountain levels of violence/gore it certainly does push it further than any Paizo adventure I can think of in recent years and it is incredibly dark theme wise so definetly may not be for the faint hearted.

More than anything else I would say this Ap was more victim to poor timing than anything else and if the release of this ap and extiction curse had been reversed there would have been no problem with it but as always your milage may vary.

Still not all that great

1/5

Really was not a fan of this one, still had some of the layout problems it had in the first book, Also not a fan of the Bestiary section needing to use space to put back in monsters that were already available in 1E (You would think they would have made sure such monsters were in the first hardback Bestiary leaving the ap one free to introduce new things rather than retreading old ground)

However the thing that really tanks the score is that this book has managed to offend one of my group

Spoiler:
One of my players is an identical twin and he found the part where you replace a villain if he gets killed with there identical twin brother very offensive (Paizo has moved away from some stereo types so he finds it very annoying they would keep the Identical twins are the exact same person with the same personality goals and motivavtions and would act exactly the same way. In his own words "If I were to suddenly to disapear one day I would not consider it okay for everyone to just replace me with my brother"

Really not a fan

1/5

Whelp had written out an entire review just to have the forum eat it so I'll keep this brief

-Hate the new book layout

-Really dislike the overarching Ap plot as presented in the book specifically regarding the main antagonist

- Hate the 'Goblins' in the book (May as well be halflings with a green paint and big ear fetish)

Shifter not very good

1/5

Very disapointed with the shifter really was not what I was hoping it was . (Also Feral hunter archetype does the shifters schtick better than the shifter and has spell casting on top of it.)

Not as great as I hoped it would be

1/5

Well having read the book a few times and stewing on it a few days overall I have to say It's kinda disapointing feels kind of reprint heavy compared to many of the other hardback book lines (Much less of a problem if you dont collect the companion or setting books admitadly)

Also while I dont mind them advancing the timeline/background on most of these orginisations I really dont like the silver ravens being one of the orginisations in the book (Being a more Pc faction than NPC one there is very little chance it would advance the way it has in this book also feels kind of like they try to make the orginisation way more important than it is)So would really have preferd another group like the rift wardens or the lion blades instead or even used the extra pages to provide more background on the other groups mentioned in the book.

Average end to an average adventure path

Good start with one slight niggle

4/5

As the title says good start to the Ap the adventure is good the background information is sure to be usefull however I personally find the 1 evil Iconic statted out per book to be less than ideal (2 pages that could have been used for fleshing out another Npc or more adventure bigger support article etc and since it is one per adventure thats 12 pages that I feel could have ben put to better use.)

Incredibly usefull

5/5

Now that Wizards of the coast have introduced several of there older edition products in Pdf form this book is proving to be a gold mine in converting them over to pathfinder (Red hand of doom and Sons of grumassh being the two that immediatly come to mind.) Same with a few of the older 3.5 pathfinder modules

Awesome ending to an Ap

5/5

Really loved this book, The enemies are suitably epic in feel and the plot itself for me at least worked really well (Also a lot better than the goddess incident from the previous book which is always a plus.

Amazing adventure

5/5

I admit when this was first announced I was at best sceptical of the entire idea however having read and Dm'd it I can say I have never been happier to be completly wrong about a product before. Ths is an incredible adventure path instalment and I cant recomend it enough.

Great product with great characters

5/5

Had the book for a while and I have to say the adventure is Excellent with some great characters all of which have well written backgrounds.

The Bestiary is excellent with a flavor of things to come and the Journal itself is well written as well as the section telling you what to expect for the rest of the Ap all in all a very good book.

Now one charcter has a background that seems to be causing some problems but at the end of the day whether you agree with it or not (I personally dont feel it to be forced) Youre players never need to know about that part since there really is no reason for that specific tidbit to come up in the advnture.

Feel's rushed

As others have said the traits are somewhat lackluster and very railroady think I'll probably do what I did with Reign of winter and Ignore them.

Very disapointing end for a faction

1/5

As an outsider looking in I cant see how this really provides a satisfactory conclusion for Shadow lodge players. Other factions have had leaders die/ leave and none of them collapse apart but aparantly Torch is the Shadow lodge and cant possibly exist without him. So unlike the lantern lodge which faction had a good proper ending.

Not all that great

2/5

Most of the other reviewers have already highlighted most the problems with this book. It feels more like it should have been a chronicles book rather than a player companion. (That and I've never had pc's as vampires work out well.)

Great collection of Npc's

5/5

An excellent book with hundreads of Npc's for all the core classes varying from your standard characters to more unusual (And in m opinion more interesting) characters such as a halfling fighter who wants to be a mage so uses a lot of wands and scrolls. Artwork as always is top notch. All in all a fine book

Great book

Had a good look through the book and am liking a lot of things I'm seeing Including new Items that use Ki and stat enhancers that give other benefits. Add in the large number of tables and charts and I think it is a real winner.

Good Gazetta poor adventure

3/5

Erik Freund coverd most of what I disliked about the module so I'll just focus on two negative things the random encounter table and the derro ambush as well as the posotive the Gazzetta

The random encounter table just seems to be a random mismash of creatures thrown in for the heck of it (Dire apes being an example) whilst in the Gazetter they had monsters mentioned that dont show up on the table at all (Green hags and spitefull fey being an example)

The Derro ambush encounter being the other thing that stuck out you have this group of really paranoid Derro obsessed with keeping themself secret (Which the module emphasises in great detail) who a small group decide just for the heck of it to try and shoot a party member full of poisoned blow darts for a laugh.

Dont get me wrong if it had been a case of them shooting at all the party members to have the poison mess with all there minds or a lone sentry they try to pick off and such it would have worked really well instead it comes across as they attack when the entire group is up and aware putting the entire secrecy thing down the pipe which dosent really fit with the way the derro act in the rest of the module at all

As the title say the Gazetta is probably the best part (and the reason it is 3 stars instead of just 1 or 2) it has several interesting locations and possible monsters mentioned (Fact best parts of the module were when the group went of script and the Dm added in bits inspired by the Gazetta). Sadly that is not enough to make the module seem all that fun YMMV of course.

Best book in the adventure path

5/5

Having recently ran my party through this book I have to say the two seperate elements (Investigation and diplomacy at the start old fashioned muscle at the end) comes together very nicely in this book. Another excellent book from Mr Pett
