In the sleepy coastal town of Sandpoint, evil is brewing. An attack by crazed goblins reveals the shadows of a forgotten past returning to threaten the town—and perhaps all of Varisia. The Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path begins with this goblin raid and takes players on an epic journey through the land of Varisia as they track a cult of serial killers, fight backwoods ogres, stop an advancing army of stone giants, delve into ancient dungeons, and finally face off against a wizard-king in his ancient mountaintop city. This hardcover compilation updates the fan-favorite campaign to the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game rules with revised and new content in more than 400 pages packed with mayhem, excitement, and adventure!

Celebrating both the fifth anniversary of the Pathfinder Adventure Path and the tenth anniversary of Paizo Publishing, this new edition expands the original campaign with new options and refined encounters throughout, incorporating 5 years of community feedback.

The Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition contains:

FAQ:

Q: Will you be doing hardcover compilations of all of your Adventure Paths?
A: No. This is a special celebration of our very first Adventure Path on its 5th Anniversary. Several of the original volumes of Rise of the Runelords have been unavailable in print for a long time, yet it remains one of our most popular adventure paths; that circumstance presents a unique opportunity for us to expand and update it for use with the Pathfinder RPG, and to apply lessons we've learned about making Adventure Paths over the last half-decade. Our other adventure paths are largely still in print, and many of them were designed for use with the Pathfinder RPG to begin with; we have no plans to recompile them.

Q: Is there anything missing from the original AP volumes?
A: Yes—otherwise, this book would be more than 600 pages long! Some of the monsters and other things created for Rise of the Runelords are now part of the official Pathfinder RPG rules, so they're not reprinted here. The original volumes also included monster ecologies, bestiary entries, and other campaign setting material that isn't directly used in the adventure itself; those items are also not present in this collection. The Pathfinder Journal fiction featuring Eando Kline is not presented here either, but it has been compiled—along with the installments from the subsequent two Adventure Paths—as The Compass Stone, now available in ePub form. We have also replaced some of the artwork from the previous edition, and replaced the six individual introductions with one new one.

Q: What is included in the digital version?
A: In addition to the full version, the Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition download includes the Interactive Maps and a Lite version for reading on portable electronic devices.

Epic introduction to Golarian, updated beautifully.

5/5

This is a beautiful update to the first Golarion based AP Paizo released. It consolidates all the volumes of the original into one easy to use book. Lots of the artwork has been updated significantly improving on many of the pieces from the original. The original stuff wasn't bad, just a big cartoony. It also updates the stats of everything using the Pathfinder 1st edition rules.

It was what kicked off the world's introduction to Golarion. This volume gave it a facelift and nice boost. My group took about 2.5 years to play through it to completion. Right around 500 hours of play. So tons of game play in it. It was the first campaign I've ever "completed" as a GM. It was only the 2nd campaign I've ever "completed" as a player or GM. I've played in dozens of other campaigns that never completed and only fizzled out. My players loved it and still talk about it and we are 1/3 of the way through Skull & Shackles having been playing it for a year.

Of all the APs Paizo has released this one likely has the most official and unofficial support for it. There are thousands of pages of fan material done for it. Paizo message boards, Facebook groups, fan pages, fan zines (Wayfinder #7 is completely devoted to it) and more have been done for it. Giving GMs unparalleled resources and support for it. It's no wonder it is one of the most popular APs they've done. I highly recommend all the additional support for it. Especially the fan stuff, it fills in lots of missing holes that just couldn't be filled in the AP itself.

I'm not sure how I feel about the construction quality of the book itself. We played for 2.5 years, but we played virtually via Fantasy Grounds with the data module for it there. A lot of my referencing and work was done through the module on the computer. I'd say in the end I only used the printed book about 1/3 the time I would have if I would have played through it in person. The binding is very loose for what I consider a small amount of usage. Other than the binding the cover itself is in good condition. I've got a feeling that had it gotten nothing but in person play and reference the binding would have fallen off by now. I'm not hard on my books, I always use the proper method of easing the binding of a new hardcover book, and I'm not rough in my handling of them. So this feels like it isn't made with the quality I would expect.

Book construction quality aside, this AP checks all the high adventure checkboxes. Wizards, dragons, goblins, magic, ancient civilizations, epic treasures, giants, ogres, dungeon crawls, sieges, wilderness exploration, haunted houses, city based stuff. You name it. This fully deserves the 5 stars I give it.

A Legendary Campaign Receives the Deluxe Package it Deserves

5/5

NO SPOILERS

I honestly don't even know where to start in reviewing this book. It was my bible for the longest campaign I've ever ran, and I've paged through its 428 pages so many times, I'm surprised my copy is in as good of shape as it is. Equalled only by the Curse of the Crimson Throne hardcover compilation, the Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition is the most detailed, impressive, and gorgeous presentation of a campaign I've ever seen. It's a testament to James Jacob and the wonderful visual and art design folks at Paizo for putting it together. In addition to the core adventures, the book includes an incredible array of supplementary material throughout its appendices: gazetteers, bestiaries, new magic items, and more. And interspersed throughout are full-colour, detailed maps, high-quality artwork of NPCs and monsters, handouts, useful sidebars to help the GM in running particular scenes, and more. I really can't rave enough about it.

I've already reviewed the substance of each of the six chapters of the adventure path in my reviews of issues # 1-6 of the monthly publication they originally appeared in (available on the Paizo website). This Anniversary Edition is no lazy cut & paste compilation or mere updating of the original 3.5 rules to Pathfinder. Everything has been refined, revised, polished, and packaged together to make a whole that is even better than the sum of its original parts. James Jacob read through countless posts on the forums about the original adventures and added encounters, explanations, and more to help everything flow even better. I've compared the original versions to this revised package, and with only a couple of exceptions, the revisions are a sound improvement.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the best presentation of a classic fantasy role-playing campaign available. You'll get hundreds of hours of gameplay out of it, experience characters growing from battling goblins at level 1 to battling the greatest threats the setting has to offer at level 18. It's a satisfying, meaty, epic campaign, and this Anniversary Edition does it full justice.

Also on Fantasy Grounds!

5/5

I don't understand why this is not mentioned here but by paying 60$ you get both the pdf version of the adventure as well as the Fantasy Grounds VTT plug in that saves you TONS of prepping. This adventure is excellent, with a lot of scary and funny moments and is a must-buy for all Pathfinder fans out there!

They all need this treatment

5/5

I have the original softcovers. I collected them up to the 50's and when I changed jobs money was tighter and I couldn't keep up. Recently going back to pick up some of the ones I missed I was shocked to see prices as high as 234.00 for a single softcover. There are a lot of Pathfinder fans who didnt get the softcovers when they were first released and these hardcovers are excellent as well as being affordable.

The book itself is solid. Takes up less space on my shelf, is a great first series of adventures, looks beautiful, is fun to play and is just overall well worth the money i spent on it. I will also be picking up Crimson Throne hardcover and hope they continue on and it was the adventure paths that drew me to PF in the first place.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing older APs given the collector's treatment done at a rate of one every 5 years. It's still a rare event, will never catch up with the Adventure Path line, but would also mean that, eventually, the 3.5 stuff will be converted into PF...

Of course, having said that, by the time they print Second Darkness, it'll be about time to update Rise of the Runelords to Pathfinder Second Edition. ;D

And have some poor clerk who only knows what they're computer/upper echelon tells them stutter, stammer, and feel helpless for no good reason. C'mon, man . . . you're better than that.

My local B&N gets the Pathfinder Tales books in stock roughly one month after it's been released by Paizo. As best as I understand it, this is because that's when they receive it from their distributor. That's just the way the game is played, and I'm fine with it. If I wanted my Pathfinder Tales books earlier, I'd order them directly from Paizo and all would be good. As it is, I order all my RPG products directly from Paizo because I like to support them, but get all my novels through B&N because I also wish to support the only bookstore we've got around these parts . . . and I do love their chai! ;)

That's how I stay loyal to both parties, at least in my mind. Paizo is full of good people, as is my local B&N store, and I'd love to see both stay in business as long as possible! That's quite honestly why I'm willing to perhaps pay a little more sometimes.

Yeah I think that's how B&N works for Paizo products, that they usually come out one month after the initial release. Possibly a delay caused by the distributor they deal with.

So correct me if I am wrong (I am a little late to the party here).

If I purchase this book through Paizo (I am an AP Subscriber) now, I just get the hard-cover with no PDF or interactive maps (these would have to be purchased separately presumably)?

And I would have had these included had I originally *pre-ordered* through Paizo direct?

I originally had a pre-order with Amazon, but because of their release date shenanigans, I decided to cancel and order through here (with the book having now been released).

Well - that presents a problem - If I don't get the extra inclusions, then I may as well be patient and order through Amazon when it becomes available (and learn my lesson for next time, it seems).

If this is true it is also a bit disappointing as I use a fair amount of technology in my game and having the PDF version helps with printing and scaling battle-maps for actual play. This is also part of the reason I began an AP subscription as having the hard copy and soft copy both available is invaluable to me.

I know I wouldn't have received the PDF if I just stuck with my Amazon order from the start, but I also wouldn't have paid $60 for the book.
I could justify paying the $60 here if the PDF was also included, but not just for the hard-cover by itself.

I know Paizo tries to do right by their customers and produces quality products from what I have seen so far, but this just seems a bit harsh, charging a customer twice for the same product, albeit in different formats.

The PDF is a different product to a book, in my opinion. It's two methods of delivering the same product. If I buy a hardcopy from any other publisher I don't generally expect a digital copy.

How does it work for you to buy the PDF (with your PF advantage discount) from paizo and get the hardcover from amazon (complete with free shipping)? You might find that works out at close to what it would have been if you'd preordered and had it shipped from paizo.

Yeah - I guess that is true Steve. I am just a bit disappointed (more in myself actually)for not originally pre-ordering direct from Paizo (if the PDF was included for pre-orders).

I have already decided that all future pre-orders will be done direct through Paizo to avoid this issue moving forward.

The big catch is shipping - I live in Australia and it is nasty. The advantage with Paizo is that I can bundle with my AP subscription and save on shipping.

I really didn't think this one through too thoroughly as the difference with my PF Advantage is not really that great and bundling with my AP sub for shipping, well, it just makes more sense.

Gotta stop looking at base prices and use my head a bit more :)

Still a bit over my budget to get both though Paizo for now, but I may just end up getting the HC and pick up the PDF later down the track (I am not running this in the immediate future anyway).

I'm in Australia too - I feel your shipping pain. :)

Perspective for you; Paizo comes up with incentives for customers to pre-order things and to subscribe. People who commit up-front (not that you PAY up-front) get more than people who don't.

It's helpful to turn around the thinking. Paizo isn't depriving people who buy after release date... they're rewarding those who bought before. Same thing, only the motivation is totally different.

That all said, you clearly knew about this product, and Paizo's been very clear for months on end what you get and how you get it. It was your choice to go the cheap-book-only route. I don't mean to sound harsh... you're sensibly trying to protect your wallet. Thing is Paizo is very honest about how best to do that. Heck, my AP subscription's 15% off discount has saved me... ugh... a LOT of money over the last five years. And I get adventure paths! With PDFs!

You don't get the football-phone if you don't act now.

Wait...football phone? How do I get a football phone?!
LOL :D

I just want to say, good book... but there are some problems sofar.

The map of Turtleback ferry makes no sense in conjunction with the flooding scenarios that must be worked out there.

Also, being a lords/lady protector of Fort Rannick is fairly fun for my groups. That relatively small section containing a table and some events was actually extremely fun and added to the flavor alot... it should have been kept imho.

I do think the book is worth it however, decent price for

My local FLGS finally got their copies of this, which means I too just got my hands on it :)

First, let me just say that this is a very nice book. It's nice to see the old locations and enemies again, in a pretty and PF-updated version! Even though I have all the original issues, I still feel this is worth every penny.

I've only had time to leaf through the book so far, so I can only really comment on the layout changes (which may be the most important, since they might affect future products). I mostly think the changes are good, except for three things I'm not particularly fond of:

1: I don't like the symbols indicating read-aloud text at all. The background color, which I like, is sufficient to differentiate read-aloud text from normal text; the symbols simply distract.

2: I really dislike the staircase arrows, and especially the numbers attached to them. They're unnecessary, they clutter up the map, and they're not even used on all staircases. Figuring out up/down and which staircases match has never been a problem for me in any of Paizo's maps so far, so these arrows and numbers do nothing except take away from the cartography (and if they're ever wrong, that will be much worse than not having an arrow in the first place).

3: This is a minor one (actually mostly a non-issue); The column in the upper right-hand corner is nice for a book this size, but I wouldn't want to see it for the ordinary AP issues.

For those of you who have this awesome piece of work how do you feel about the necessity of having the Rise of the Runelords Map Folio too?

One reason I ask is that a few people have said how nice the maps in the book are. While I love the map folios if they are sufficient I may at least hold off until I get the book.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Is there a new RotR Map Folio? Because the original just had the combat maps (mostly) in small scale ... and a map of Sandpoint?

Trying to remember... been a long time since I used it. I prefer what they have done with the Map Folio line since Kingmaker - the big poster maps.

The one for Carrion Crown rocks. (For my uses anyway)

Chavamana, I also like the Carrion Crown folio very much. I only have a couple of them but really like to refer to them when I'm reading other material. But, I find they're hit-and-miss, in my humble opinion. For example, I did not enjoy the Legacy of Fire folio as much. Anyway, I just want to know if, for people who have the anniversary addition, would it be enhanced by the RotR map folio.

My ENWorld review of Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition is now up and can be found HERE. Short strokes: "This book stands at the pinnacle of the hobby games market. In terms of the hundreds of hours of epic entertainment it provides, value for the money, value-in-use at the table, available cross-product support, and sheer physical attractiveness, Rise of the Runelords Anniv. Ed. is the gold-medalist in every category possible by any reasonably objective criteria you choose to apply."

The Legacy of Fire was the 'old style' Map Folios, I think.

I don't think they tried the 'new' format until Kingmaker.

OLD STYLE (reprinting the combat maps in the same size as in the AP)
Rise of the Runelords
Curse of Crimson Throne
Second Darkness
Legacy of Fire
Council of Thieves

NEW STYLE (Bigger maps of cities/areas of Golarion)
Kingmaker (hexarrfic)
Serpent's Skull
Inner Sea Poster Map (which is so so wonderful)
Carrion Crown
Jade Regent
Skull & Shackles
City Map Folio

With the City Map Folio being an older map folio with the newer style.

However, I think the Shattered Skull Map Folio will probably work quite well for when I run Rise of the Runelords again.

There is a reason for that. I have a LOT of products to review and not as much time to read them and write them as I would like. So when given a choice between reviewing something I like -- and something I don't -- I tend to review the product I like. This is especially so when it is a third-party Pathfinder compatible product. Paizo can handle negative reviews without much trouble and I expect their financial impact is negligible. (And yes, I have given some Paizo products negative reviews).

On the other hand, a negative review on the front page of ENWorld for a far more modest and shoestring-budgeted 3rd party publisher can cause them great damage. If I can't say anything nice -- I'd really rather say nothing at all when it comes to those publishers. And so generally? I don't review 3rd party material as a consequence as I tend not to like it (I'm picky when it comes to art and merciless on sloppy design work). There are a few exceptions to this -- but only a few so far.

I've been saving a bunch of reviews for release this coming week before Gencon. Right now, I'd say the Threat Level to your wallet will particularly increase into the Amber Zone by the night of Wednesday, August 15, 2012. :)

I already have the old AP and to be honest i'm wondering whether i should spend 40 bucks just to have an updated version of books I already bought.

Specially as we are about to finish AP5. OK so all stats have been updated to PF... and ?

Is it REALLY worth it ?

Dark Archive

If you're about to finish #5, the advantage may not be as great. But encounters have been tweaked to work better, stat blocks have been updated to Pathfinder RPG, and new stuff has been added to the adventure path. If you think you might run it again at some point in the future, getting the anniversary edition is definitely worth it in my opinion.

Book 6 has some changes, probably more than most books, but that's a lot for one AP issue update...

That said, half of my reason for getting this is that I am running RotRL for the third time, it's definitely one worth replaying.

My group postponed the last installment of the AP just for this book. I'm not regretting that :)

I have to strongly disagree with this one. They're useful yet unobtrusive. While figuring this out isn't frequently a problem, when it is you're left puzzled. I have a lot better things to do than spend five minutes trying to figure out how several levels of something are actually linked, especially when it's not actually floors but levels of a single floor. Um... is that a pit or is it a dias? No way to tell. Well, now there is.

I agree with Anguish - I find the arrows useful to me and my players.

Hmm. For some reason the arrows weren't as troublesome and "cluttery" to me on my second look through the book. Perhaps it was a simple case of not being used to them, or me being tired on my first leaf-through.

In any case, I still don't find them useful (although I realize others may), but I don't actively dislike them anymore. So consider my point #2 above retracted :)

(the read-aloud text symbols were still distractions, so I don't want to see those again)

I unfortunately was late to this party. I ran in this adventure when I was still playing 3.5 back in like 2007-2008 I think... I really want to get the anniversary ed as this adventure introduced me to Paizo. The only thing that is making me hesitant is that I like having the physical books and the digital maps from my Adventure Path sub pdfs.

Is there any chance Paizo might put together a $10 pdf of only the maps and handouts? Its easier to spend $100+ on an adventure path over a few months then it is to drop it all at once.

Thanks ahead of time to any users or admins that take the time to respond.

+1; that I'd definitely get.

I never had the chance to pick this up originally so the AE is my first time with it. The idea of a seperate pdf like this sounds great, not just for this, but as an ongoing thing.

Thanks ahead of time to any users or admins that take the time to respond.

If it's a problem of budgeting, you might want to consider buying a gift voucher for say $20 each month for the next few, and then using those to pay for it?

chavamana, thanks for the breakdown of the folios. Very helpful to a noob like me. Great info guys, thanks for pitching in.

Its not so much as a problem with budgeting (lol) as it is with buying an adventure path twice. That's why I have the subscription (which I guess makes me a little spoiled). I can rationalize buying a core book twice (especially for 9.99), its always nice to have an extra book lying around for people who don't have them or forgot theirs, but there is really no rational reason to buy the same exact adventure path in 2 formats (with about a $10 difference) just for maps that taken the time I could draw myself. The thing is I have limited time, and anything that makes DMing easier on me I would be willing to buy as long as it was reasonable.

I cant imagine it would be that hard or costly to reorganize & repackage the pictures you have already made and sell it for $10 (same price as the core rule books). I cant speak for others, but I would love to have a map pack, and I know I'm not unique enough to be the only one. Plus they already do this with the current PDF adventures, they come with a separate file with the maps. They should include this with physical books bought on the site like the PDFs or they could just sell it separately so customers buying books in stores are not alienated.

Unfortunately I am cursed to need physical books so I cant just own digital copies. In my opinion nothing beats turning real pages and holding a book in your hands.

Agreed and agreed. I would have bought this, but not in this case. So unfortunately Paizo wont get any money out of me for this one. Not paying twice for Hard-copy and PDF. (Perhaps if the PDF were significantly cheaper). Only reasons I subscribe is to get both versions otherwise I would order from Amazon or similar stores. In this case I think I will simply have to give this a skip as its not worth buying even from those stores as I still don't have a PDF version.

Have you been an Adventure Path subscriber for a while, or is this a recent thing for you?

Hey, here is a question for you: I didn't start my subscription until Skull & Shackles, should I complain to Paizo that it's unfair that Paizo would charge me "twice" for purchasing the hard copy and PDF of Jade Regent or any other previous AP?

This hard cover is no different than any other AP, though at 50% the price of any other complete AP set.

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. I mean this thing was announced about a YEAR ago. If this guy was a recent subscriber then I could possibly see the annoyance but If he's been around for at least a year? Not so much.

I don't know if this has already been brought up in this thread, but I was curious whether or not anybody knew why Karzoug was dropped down from a 32-point build to a 25 for this? Is it a reflection of being built under the new ruleset?

Yes, 3.5 used a completely different point buy system. 32 was the highest suggested in the 3.5 PHB (or DMG, I can't remember), and 25 is the highest suggested in PF core. They're approximately equivalent in terms of power.

Liberty's Edge

IIRC, with point buy for 3.5, all your stats started at 8, below average. Pathfinder point buy, you start at 10, average. So you don't need as many points in PF IMO.

That is one thing I never understood with 3.5 point buy. You are playing heroes, larger then life. You should at least start with average stats, not below average. It penalizes you from the start.

PF lets you go even lower, to a 7. 3.5 just defaults to 8 only able to go up. If you want a character without below average stats, you can do so in both systems quite easily with the Point Buy.

And I completely disagree that heroes shouldn't have below average stats, but that's just a matter of opinion.

Well for myself I only started my AP with Skull & Shackles, so yeah - a little new to all this.

Been following Pathfinder for a while, but only just started playing regularly again, so bought the core books and started my AP sub.

Seems there might be at least a couple of us getting used to the rules around here :)

Well - lesson learned for next time

8) I can print out the player handouts from the PDF so I don't have to cut up the pages of my pretty book.
I might not have mentioned, but there is also a third PDF in the PDF package that is just handouts for easy printing :)

Is there a way to only buy the handouts PDF? I bought the hardcopy and i had no intention to buy the PDF, but the handouts would sure be handy to have...

Anyway, just wondering if it's available somewhere.

Thanks!

Scarab Sages

I remember that I read somewhere around here that they planned 'interactive maps' for extra purchase, I don't know if they will do so for already published APs.

Edit: found it

Thanks for the info! I'll wait for that i guess.

That post is in reference to our regular adventure paths. I still have some confirming to do *if* we're going to be releasing the extra bits for this product as a separate PDF product for purchase.

well, for what it's worth, *if* you do it, i'll buy it :)

I finally picked up a copy and I think it is great. I don't see what folks are talking about with the print on the bottom of the pages - my copy is fine. The text at the bottom is clear as day.

I'm going to quote myself (which is legal in 48 of the 50 states, as long as you are over 18) and ask this question again ...
