There is so much you can do with a City street Map, and you leave the Other side Blank!....
This one pisses me Off..
I am getting sick and tired of these blank sides. They are not worth the term "Flip-Mat"
Steve Geddes |
Tying the flip mats and map packs like this is terrific. Especially given the improvement to the map packs.
Having said that, I too would prefer features on both sides - the different textures on all the blank mats I have now are a feature, but not as valuable as an additional streets cape would be.

I am glad you guys like the blank sides...
My point is..
Not including the Blank Flip Mat, they have made more then enough Blanks.
They selling point of these is you flip the Map you get something on the Other Side, Being Blank is not Something, But it Does Save Paizo in Production Cost.
Now this Map happens to be still useful because of the Map Packs that go with it, but the Others are not, since I already have enough Blanks.
Paizo Please start making Flip Mats and Stop making just a Map. Or separate them and only call the ones with stuff on 2 sides an actual flip mat and the ones with just one side something else.
Depending on the next 3 ones that we have not seen images for, If I see an abundance of Blank sides, I will be canceling this subscription.

You can do better than this.
Presumably the issue is whether can they do better than this for the same price. As far as I'm concerned, I'd be happy to pay extra for more themed backgrounds and fewer empty grids - the different textures not being particularly valuable to me. However there are many who probably consider the flip-mats to be as expensive as they 'should' be.
I dare say the commercial reality is a need to balance including extra content with keeping the price at a point people will pay for them.

Since they have done maps already with both sides used, at this price, I would say Yes they can do it.

Prices do go up though. Quite a lot of late on a sort ofmthings.

Well if they can no longer afford making flip-mats at the price they want to sell it, and if that is forcing them to have a blank side, then they need to stop advertising them as flip mats, because the Are not.

I think it's a question of what you want them for.
I just ordered the "Theater" which has a backside of a gridwork of bare boards. There were some complaints on the reviews of this being "yet another blank" and requests to have made it a warehouse or something, but honestly, a huge blank boarded expanse can be a lot of things: a warehouse, a ballroom floor, a pier, a boardwalk, and any one of a dozen taverns once I scatter a few furnishings around.
This? I'd consider it the city market square on the days when the market is not set up, and I can pimp it out fairly easily.
It also makes for a good background color for a dungeon, especially if you don't want all your dungeons looking the same.

Besides, Paizo already gave us the only "blank" map we ever need to buy:

Why the heck does it go to the City Map instead of the jpeg of the basic flip map?

I have to agree. I'm starting to get tired of the blank sides. I can download and print out my own blank battlemats. Come on guys. You can do better than this.
And I disagree -- vehemently. I prefer one "blank" side. For one, I like having a variety of colors and textures...desert, dungeon, cobblestone, water, dirt, grass, etc. Selecting the appropriate texture is one of the quickest, easiest ways to set down the basic "feel" of an encounter. Also, a blank map allows me to carry one or two, yet still cover every situation.
Please do not eliminate the blank sides!

One of the goals of the blank side was to offer a unique base for the Shops Map Pack buildings to have other layouts, but retain a similar surrounding texture. Make sense?
If I did not already Have a "Blank" side that filled that purpose it may have had made sense to me.

The flip side of the prison map also works well for a blank urban background.
I've said it before--while I like some blank and low-detail maps, I now have enough that more blank sides on flip mats are becoming a dealbreaker for me when it comes to buying new maps. Everyone of course will continue to disagree.
There is nothing in it for me to buy this map at all. I can buy the shops map pack and poster tak them to any of my several existing blank mats and get exactly the same result. The only thing I'd additionally get out of the city streets map pack is... the roofs to the shops, in a particular order. That's not worth $13 to me.
I hope it is useful to other people.

+1! I use WoTC Dungeon Tiles, so blank side gives me the background I need.
By the way, can you draw on these battlemaps with dry-erase pens?

Like I said, I have plenty of "Blanks" already, and I bought them, with these I do not want blanks. That area is already well over killed.
So I do not understand this desire to keep blanks, if you look at the offerings already made by Paizo, WOTC and others, such need for blanks like grass, stone, etc... are already well filled.
So I am being made to pay for products I have already bought.

Don't you mean $11.40 with your discount?

Thanks, Vic! Now I know what I'll buy for myself for christmas (since Bestiary 2 won't likely be available at my FLGS for some time)! :)

thenorthman, since this is getting OT, I will be spoilering my reply to you:
Don't you mean $11.40 with your discount?
When I subscribed to Game Mastery Maps, I got the discount... and then charged around $3 shipping, making them effectively cost @ $14--more than MSRP. I now order my maps through my FLGS (and still do so regularly) as it effectively saves me money (and I get to support my FLGS).
If I bought a lot of products regularly that I could pack them in with map shipments all the time, every month, it would probably be worth it, but as it is right now, I can't afford that kind of discount. ;)
If we got some kind of .pdf or other freebie by subscribing, as you do with the book subscriptions, I would resubscribe.

Just thought I would add my two cents. I've bought a few flip maps and quite a number of the map packs in the past but it is mainly impulse buying (certainly not regular).
I saw this one advertised in the weekly email, thought it sounded good and really liked the side with the buildings. Momentarily I was thinking of buying both the flip map and the matching map pack, then I saw it was blank on the flipside.
Instant turn off. I've already got plenty of blank grids and absolutely no interest in any more.
So there you go. Would have bought it and the map pack if there were cityscapes on both sides. Not buying now.
No idea how many people felt like me about it. Guess that is for Paizo to worry about.

I find when there are maps on both sides of the flip map I always buy two because usually they are designed to work together. I have two of all the forest type ones. I could build a huge map right now and they would all go together in a way that makes sense. I love that....
I am not that picky about whether there are blanks on the other side but I prefer not (even though that means I will buy two).
Today we ran a one off game module. I premade all the maps on my blank flipmaps. They were all blank on both sides and I made maps on both sides of them. I had everything premade and it saved a lot of time in drawing on the fly. I loved doing it that way. I rarely draw maps during games anymore. I have a couple of methods that I combine to avoid having to do it as I go and flip maps is one of them.

You have posted my thoughts exactly. For about a minute, Paizo had two sales here, the mat and the map pack, and then I saw the blank side. I'm disappointed.

Well, I picked up this map from our FLGS and was tempted to get the shop interiors. While I think combining the flip map with the map packs the blank side was rather disappointing. I understand the need for a blank side now and then, the ocean blank side on the ship map was a nice touch, but I prefer a little more detail on maps of places that... well... need a little more detail. A huge blank cobblestone map for a city? Meh. Not one of paizo's best.

I bought this based on the idea that it works with the map packs - a very nice touch!
However I too would have prefered it if there had not been a blank side - I have two basic flip mats already. I would have been happy if the other side had just used the same buildings just in a different configuration, perhaps with fewer side streets etc.
