FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarFullStar Used It Last Friday
Reviewer: Otto R. Ringus

Ya so half the players were going to be gone and I pulled this out, told them it represented the "market-square" district of a recently abandoned town. Two ogres were pillaging the town and the 3 characters had to take them out - on this map. I fancied it up w/ wet/dry fires and smoke and debris.

The dimensions were perfect for the encounter. Long range running, spells, and ranged weapons all came into pretty good focus, the size was just right. And I managed to integrate it into a 'home-base" type of setting, so it can be re-used many times.

The only minor complaint I have is this: Much too dark! I could use it about 10x lighter where my markers actually show up and where you dont need glaring overheads to be able to see the details.

Speaking of which, excellent details! They ended up stuffing a stabilized but unconcious mage into an over-turned fish-wagon heheh!

Platinum (aka 'WOOHOO!') aspect: There are about 12 buildings and then 12 stalls making this a pretty decent-sized area for PCs to bargain hunt. Inclusion of a central fountain ties it all together. Graphics overall are cool with some appearing to be shrunken photos.

Gold (aka 'Why You Buy') aspect: Instant full-color setup. This kicks the crap out of drawing it out yourself onto a pad of paper.

Electrum (aka 'Cool But Weird') aspect: Rope shop

Silver (aka 'The Eh') aspect: There isn't any one place that truly stands out. Maybe the crystal ball. Or perhaps the rug spot. It would help if at least one of the buildings was an odd shape.

Copper (aka 'Waste of Space'} aspect: Flowers. OK, one spot would be neat but we have a stall, a spot, and a building. Not to mention what look like dead flowers all over the board. Why not a bowyer/fletcher? Or a potter or some other artisan?

Gem Idea: Offer fan-submitted, downloadable writeups for the various shops. It'd not only be neat to see the different concepts customers came up with for each place, but also give the mat more use.

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarFullStar Not as useful as some other flipmats, but...
Reviewer: bugleyman

...the reverse side makes a darn good map for drawing dungeons. The front side itself isn't as universally useful as the earlier city flip mat. Physcial materials are the same (short version: Good, plastic coating is a touch thin).

Overall, Flip mats are a stong product, but this wouldn't be the first one I'd buy. If you already have a few and want to build your collection, this is a fine choice.

This Flip Mat looks fantastic and may be more versitile than you imagined. Looking at your preview it looks like I can use my MapPack; Village-Market Place to overlay the central portion of the map and create different market layouts. (Preferably with the PC's chasing a thief through the market that is now different then they remember.) Was this intentional? (If it was not, somebody should take credit anyways.) You might want to think about making another Map pack with smaller size shops than your Map Pack: City that can fit on the Flip Mat:City Market. Then the whole thing can be customizable. (I might buy a second flip mat and a scissors and do it myself) Nice synergy between your products also.

This is my second flip-map purchase, and I am concerned about my ability to get full utility from it.

How do you get them to lay flat nicely? The bending required for packaging and storing makes it so it doesn't want to lay flat. Which makes it hard to use in conjunction with our miniatures.

And we're not using prepainted plastic. These are real pewter minis and they have some weight to them (though some aren't that well balanced to begin with).

Any suggestions from others who have bought this product?

The key here is to reverse the folds that the map originally has. If you do this a few times (folding it back and forth), it should lay nice and flat.

Hope that helps.

On game day an hour or so before everyone gets here I take out all my Flip-Maps and do as Jason suggested and then put then lay them down the opposite way of the fold on a flat hard surface. I might even put something like my remote controls on them to make sure they flatten out.

By the time my players arrive my maps are ready to go and I throw out there whatver I need for that day. I used this one for the opening scene of Burnt Offerings.

Enjoy

jsepeta,

I would be interested in having an index to the various shops, especially if there are user submissions so I could flip the mat around and use it in more than one city, but with different encounters/NPCs. I cannot necessarily tell what each building/stall is a picture of, although some of them are more easily-identifiable than others.
