STILL THE BEST STREET FLIP-MAT!

5/5

THE GOOD:
Lots of different Buildings (23 actually).
You have 3 horizontal streets running between the buildings
(a 4-5 squares broad one, a 2-3 squares broad one and a 1-2 squares broad one).
You have 4 vertical streets on the map (two are 1 square broad, one 2 squares and the last 2-3 squares).
One building has a walled backyard/stables.
There are 5 sewer grates in the streets, so you could combine this with the "Sewers" map-pack.
Combines with the "Map-Pack: Shops", which depicts the interior of the buildings.
This version is a little brighter than the original one, so that you can see things better on it.
I also like that the backside is blank so that you can draw your own streets and buildings or put some cardboard or resin models of houses on it.

THE BAD:-

THE UGLY:-

Bland and Needs Improvement

2/5

With some urban adventuring coming up soon for an adventure path I'm running, I was lucky enough to get for the holidays my first product in the Pathfinder Flip-Mat line: City Streets. The mat is a good size for the gaming table: 2 feet wide and 2 1/2 feet long. One side is blank with 1' squares, while the other side is, as the title would indicate, streets of a quasi-medieval city full of buildings, cobblestone roads, and sewer entrances. The Flip-Mat is treated so that it can take equally wet erase, dry erase, and permanent markers, which is pretty cool.

On the whole though, I'm not particularly impressed. Instead of a blank side, I would rather have another part of a city landscape with different types of buildings to keep things fresh--I have enough blank mats for game play. The city streets side is pretty bland, as there's not a lot of interesting decor for the players to interact with--things like water barrels, wagons, refuse piles, and more would go far to giving this the feel of a real city street. I'm not a fan of how the buildings are depicted; because it's a true top-down view, you can't see doors and windows, tell what the different buildings are supposed to be, or have characters burst into a building (because the designers left the roofs of the buildings on). Unless you're really into rooftop adventuring (and even if you are, the grids don't extend to the roofs), I've seen other products of this sort done better and with more interesting features. It's passable, but not up to the level of good.

Handy

2/5

Unimaginative & dull, but perfectly useful when you just need to throw down a section of town for the players to run around in. The blank back side might be more useful, as a similar-colored background for the Marketplace or Rooftop tiles. As the Flip-Mat series goes, this is one of the less pathetic ones.

3/5

Shame they did not take the opportunity to replace the plain cobbled side when they reprinted this - the choice of rooftop view or insides of building as with village square would have improved this

The description: "Why take the time to sketch out ugly scenery on a smudgy plastic mat when dynamic encounters and easy clean-up are just a Flip away?"
But on the back side of this map, what do they give us? Not another street or city scene but a blank grid so we can sketch out our own 'ugly scenery on smudgy plastic'.
Come on Paizo would have really hurt that much to give us another useable scene, this is the kind of stuff we expect from WOTC.

I actually like the Flip Mats like this one that offer a "blank" back (a grid on a plain background in a color that matches the reverse). They are helpful because you can't possibly have a Flip Mat that matches every need. The back of this one is good for drawing a city with a different layout, or it can also serve to draw a dungeon. I find this one to be one of the more versatile ones in the line, precisely because it is "blank" on the back.

Similarly, I believe it was the Theatre that has a "blank" reverse that just looks like wooden floors. That one is good for any kind of indoor map in an urban area, so it can be the inside of an Inn, a Thieves' Guild, a warehouse. . .whatever you need.

One thing I wish they had mentioned about this Flip Mat is that Paizo also makes (made?) a companion Map Pack that you could use to show the *interior* of each of the buildings on here. For me that made this one immensely more useful than it would have been otherwise. I am a fan of the whole line, but this one remains a favorite.

Please keep in mind that the Flip-Mat Classics line reprints out-of-print Flip-Mats that were originally published a long time ago. Back then, one side of the map would often have only a simple pattern, which made some people happy (see the above post!) and some people unhappy. Eventually, we felt that we'd done enough of those, so all of the mats have had full cartography on both sides for quite some time now, and—outside of the reprint line—will continue to do so.

So are all of these exact reprints or have you improved them in any way? Ta.

Cool. Really thinking about getting this one.

The PDF is still available and ready for printing+laminating.

We didn't make any intentional changes apart from the packaging and the teeny product info text.

When I first started buying Flip Mats I agreed with you, but as my collection has grown I've come to appreciate having some Flip Mats with "clear" terrain on the back because when mapping extensive dungeons I need more mats than my Basic Terrain set will cover, but I don't particularly want to purchase additional copies of Basic Terrain. Plus, even for my hand drawn stuff, I'm sufficiently picky that I like the terrain type on the clear mat to at least sort of match what I'm drawing, so I hate to draw a dungeon on the grass or water mat.

That said, I am glad that Paizo has moved away from the clear sides because I can get my fill of them from reprints and old Flip Mats.

In defense of this particular clear side, though, with its street texture it might make a particularly good base layer for laying out Map Pack: Marketplace or Map Pack: Rooftops.

Liberty's Edge

One of the best maps they've ever made, and vital for running some older PFS scenarios. I'm so glad this is back in print!

As a new DM, I'm really excited for all these maps and tiles that save time in my sessions and add so many interesting details for encounter seeds. I just wish Paizo would reprint their GameMastery Map Pack: Shops to go along with this reprint.

Any Chance we will see the Map Pack: shops return either as basically a flip mat (easiet, since you could basically do one side as the city streets map, just with interiors, and then the others on the other side as a new map. Or harder since the dimensions are off, a Flip Tile urban expansion that will still work with the city streets mat?
