Did you have to modify the maps at all, or are they a common size? (I showed my wife the pictures you posted and she was immediately on board with setting this up in our new game room! SQUEE!)Cool - glad you guys like it. Wife thinks it looks like a large window ("into another world" I keep responding) and my 3yr old daughter keeps asking me where our house is on the map.
Yep - 23x34, might have even been 22 & 3/8 x 34. I bought them in target for $9.99 each. Its kinda painful to center the maps to minimize the amount of overlap/duplication. You'll know what I mean when you try it, but you will end up shifting each map into a corner of the frame and that will leave a gap (about 1/2 inch) on 2 sides of the frame. I put black electrical tape behind the mapin those cases so you don't notice the gap. Its pretty hard to get perfect.

The pdf shows four pages of the map with labels, but when extracted (with SomePDF or other program) there will be four identical unlabeled full size maps 6696x10080 pixels, including the top and bottom border. (i.e. you don't have to put the quadrants together.)
That was a mistake, and was unnecessarily bloating the file size. We've updated the "quadrants" version so that each file only includes the visible area, reducing the size of each file significantly, and we've added a new single-file version as an alternate download so that you don't need to do any assembly to have a full-size map with tags, and so you can still extract a full-size map without tags if you want.

Thanks! I could have used that updated version a couple of days ago. I spent the last 2 days coloring each text label according to its type (water, mountain, town, deserts, etc). I was able to get each map quadrant with it's labels through Acrobat.
Hopefully my Photoshop layers can easily be moved to the new version. I'll know in a day or 3. :)

Something is odd here. Comparing the original file to the new files in adobe reader at 800% zoom reveals the text in the original as much clearer in the original download. The text in the two new downloads isn't nearly as clear. Any ideas?
I don't have my other tools here (Photoshop, Acrobat) to try deeper forensics.

Looks like the art department mistakenly rendered the tags as part of the image in the new version (as opposed to keeping them as separate, selectable text objects). Thanks for pointing this out—we'll get it fixed.

Glad I looked at this thread first, I came to the board to DL the new update, so I will wait for the next notification now.

Excellent!! Let us know when it's done. I'll put my project on hold until then. :)

The PDF has been updated. The label on the map are once again text instead of an image.
Nice. This means that the map is now searchable with Acrobat's finder.
I'm also pleased to see Dabril added to the maps in both the poster map folio and the Inner Sea World Guide and intrigued by its nearest Galtan neighbor, Riverton, to the north, which made it into the poster map but not into the guide.
Any hints as to where we'll see Riverton appear?

There's not a ton on it, but what you can find is in Guide to the River Kingdoms p. 41. See the PathfinderWiki article on it here.

Ah, my bad for looking at the map and assuming Galt's borders went up to the lake. Having Riverton be in the River Kingdom's makes more sense.
Given that they're only thirty miles or so apart (if I'm reading the map key right) there must be some interesting smuggling going on between the two.

Just finished mounting this on my wall, opposite my giant World of Greyhawk map [ahh, Dragon magazine in print form, you were the BEST], and I gotta say that I'm absolutely stoked to start using it in all my future campaigns. Now all we need is a poster map of Golarion's solar system for the ceiling [or maybe I need to bust out the foam balls and poster paint and just go with an old-school diorama . . .]!
Much love to the crew that put this project together!

Yes the solar system map would be nice. Plus I would like to see a poster of Glorian as a whole. As known currently like in the new book.

So far so good. Framed maps look great, and the black electrical tape was an inspired idea! I intend to hang these bad boys tomorrow. Any tips regarding how you got them hung all nice and flush?

All credit to Xarls Taunzund for this one... he works at a print company and created this fantastic vinyl map for us using his PDF copy of The Big Map:
Here it is from the front...
...and from another angle, standing near the shelf o' gaming goodness...
...and a third angle, this time with the shelves visible. (Yes, we rawk the fugly carpet remnant in our gaming room.)
To give you an idea of the size, here's Xarls standing on a chair next to it.
Andrew Betts and his wife have one, too, though no place to hang it yet.
Stop drooling.
Thanks, Paizo, for your fantastic world and always-incredible cartography!

I was in on that map too. I have all the instructions for the company if anyone wants to get it printed. It costs about $50 (plus the cost of your PDF). You can give me an e-mail at andrew AT andrewd2 DOT com. Paizo if this is a problem, please remove this message.

Laughing out loud about that one got me some strange looks from my office mate (ok, I did loose some coffee in the event, but hey...).
Awesome work, Rivermurk, unfortunately I have to side with the people looking for an additional wall in my room. *sad face*

I have a question about the PDF - our group was thinking about trying to get this put onto a woven blanket (for the textured look) to hang on the wall where we play.
My question is - is there a written statement or blurb I can use to show my printer that I would have rights to reproduce this on a non-commercial basis?
I've had issues with getting photo's printed if they look too good because they don't want to break copyright - and I'm just trying to make sure I don't run into issues.

All printers have their own standards, I guess, but I've had success by pointing them to Paizo's FAQ. Specifically:
Can I print my PDF, or have it professionally printed?
You may print one copy of any Paizo PDF for personal use. Note that this only applies to products that list Paizo Publishing as the copyright holder—other publishers may have different policies; you'll need to contact them directly.

Ahhh see I didn't know that was there - it should cover it :)

HELP! My husband has the inner sea mapfolio thing, and I want to frame it for him as a gift. Would the whole thing fit in a 42x60" frame? Kind of like this.
I would rather have a big giant frame on our wall than a bunch of smaller poster frames together. I can't find an exact size of the maps all together. I can't find an exact size of the maps each individually, either. Thank you for any help!
Cintra Bristol |
I think that frame would be ever-so-slightly too small for the complete poster.
Each of the four panels measures about 21 and 3/4 inches wide by 33 inches tall. There's about an inch of overlap, so total width would end up being about 42.5 inches, and total height would end up being about 65 inches. The height might be addressed by folding either the title or legend bar (top of bottom), but that might not be preferred; the width would be even harder to address because any folding will rather obviously eliminate important bits at the left or right side.
As an alternative, perhaps you could get a piece of plexiglass large enough, then buy trim molding (the kind used at top or bottom of walls in a house) that has a nice look, and "frame" it by positioning the trim around it, mounted directly to the wall? I've seen some very nice examples of this done by a couple of friends for over-large artwork.

We have no plans to update this PDF with new locations—we invent new locations every month, after all, and keeping this immense map up to date with those locations would be a significant monthly drain on our work resources, unfortunately.
It's been 4 years. I think it's time we petition someone to have Mark Moreland update this map.
(Mark, I'm starting to read your Mindspin Mountains gazetteer; each time I see your name, I remember your work on the map. I had to put it down from the wall a year ago while renovating and never got to put it back. I'd rather do it with an updated version!)

There is a new poster map included with the Second Edition Lost Omens: World Guide that includes all the new nations and other setting changes.
accompanied by a giant two-sided poster map depicting the heart of the Pathfinder setting.
